The second semester of the 2015-2016school year is in full swing and with manycold and snowy days before us, I would liketo remind parents to have students dresswarmly when waiting for the bus or in prep-aration for the trip to school. Student driv-ers should be reminded that road conditionschange throughout the day and cautionshould always be used when driving in thewinter. The decision to delay or cancelschool is always difficult, but the determin-ing factor will always be the safety of ourstudents. Appreciation goes out to our bus
drivers for their difficult job of safely trans- porting our students to and from school eachday. A reminder that delays and closingsare sent out by Instant Alert and also on var-ious television and radio stations.
A great way to beat the winter blahs is toattend a school event. There are still multi- ple athletic events during the latter part ofJanuary and throughout the month of Febru-ary. In addition, our High School Band andChoir Solo and Ensemble Contest is sched-uled for Saturday, February 6 at St. Mary’sHigh School. I invite you to attend and en- joy the musical talents of our students.
The annual organizational meeting for the
Antwerp Local School Board of Educationwas held on Thursday, January 7. DennisRecker was elected President and RobertHerber was elected Vice President. Return-ing for service on the board this year areAnita Bok and Kipp Taylor. Joining the board this year is Sara Schuette. Sara waselected to the board this past November re- placing outgoing board member Mark Ryan.Monthly meetings in 2016 will take placethe third Thursday of each month. The nextregular meeting is Thursday, February 18 at6:00 p.m. in the Board of Education confer-ence room.
If you have children in our district, please plan to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences
during the evening of February 18 or Febru-ary 23. Communication between home andschool is an important factor in assuringsuccess for all students and enhancing theacademic excellence of the Antwerp LocalSchools district.

The first two grading periods are worth 40% each while the se-mester exam is worth 20% of the finalgrade. Winter athletic eligibility is deter-mined by grades earned during the second grading period, not the semester average.
Assessments— As we move into February,we continue preparation for Ohio’s State
Assessments. Each assessment will be ap- proximately three hours in length (180minutes) and will be divided into two 90minute sessions. We are required to com- plete all the assessments in the 15 consecu-tive day period. We will begin our assess-ment sessions on Monday, April 11, 2016. Istrongly encourage families to avoid plan-ning any trips or vacations during this time.

More Accurate Diagnoses, LessInvasive Treatment for Pelvic Pain
• A teenager with cramps so intense she could not go to school• A 30-year-old whose pelvic pain led to severe emotional distress• An elderly woman who found the simple act of sitting to be unbearable For more than 25 years Dr. Maurice Chung has treated these womenand others for a range of problems, including menstrual pain, sexual pain, bladder control, and organ prolapse. He is quietly passionate about dealing
with pain in the least invasive way possible.
Avoid Unnecessary Surgery “Pelvic pain is often misdiagnosed as endometriosis,” Dr. Chungexplains. “In fact, endometriosis – an abnormality of the uterus –accounts for only about 20% of all cases.”Looking at the symptom too narrowly can lead to the wrong
treatment. For example, if a single organ such as the uterus is believedto be the culprit, unnecessary surgery can result. But when other issuesare involved – such as nerve or muscle damage – even a treatmentas drastic as hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) won’t beeffective. Dr. Chung is committed to helping women avoid unnecessarysurgery. “When a woman comes to me with severe pain, I start withthe least invasive treatment approach. The vast majority of pelvic paincases do not require major surgery,” he says.
New Center for Treating Pelvic Pain Dr. Chung oversees the Van Wert County Hospital Women’s Centerof Excellence for Pelvic Pain, Organ Prolapse and Bladder Control, acomprehensive treatment facility opened in 2015. Visitors to the Centerinclude women at every stage of life, from teenagers to the elderly. A graduate of Northeastern University College of Pharmacy and TuftsUniversity Medical School, Dr. Chung is board-certied in both OB-GYNand uro-gynecology and has been a certied laparoscopic surgeon since1995.
Pain is not normal Women may think that symptomssuch as severe menstrual cramps orpressure on the bladder caused byaging are unavoidable. Or they maybe embarrassed to discuss issueslike painful intercourse and urinaryincontinence. Sometimes, afterunsuccessful attempts to treat pelvicpain, women are made to feel theproblem is all in their head.
“Women have a tendency to carefor family and loved ones rst andmay neglect or downplay their owndiscomfort,” Dr. Chung says. “Butpain is not normal. We take allsymptoms seriously, and we wantour patients to know they are notalone. With proper diagnosis andtreatment, there is a good possibilitywe can eliminate or signicantlyreduce pain without drasticmeasures.”
