The fog and winter weather have greatlyimpacted the school year. It is difficult forstudents to be at their best when the routinechanges constantly with 2-hour delays andcancellations. Already this school year, wehave missed 13 days and 13 additional de-lays due to weather. The first five calamitydays are forgiven, so as I write this article,we need to make up eight days. We havemade up one day on President’s Day andwill be in session on Thursday, April 2. Ourextended days for the remainder of theschool year will allow us to make up an ad-ditional five days. This still leaves us withone day to make up in May, so we will be insession on Thursday, May 21. Graduationwill remain on May 17, but seniors will haveto come to school on May 18 since they areonly allowed to be excused three days priorto the other students. Let’s hope for goodweather the rest of the year!

I hope you were able to attend the musicdepartment’s production of Little Women onMarch 20 or 21. The students’ hard workwas evident and the production was out-standing! I am amazed at the talent of ourstudents.

The annual Hoops for Heart day was held onMarch 25. The students used this opportuni-ty to participate in friendly competition for agood cause, raising money for the AmericanHeart Association. Thanks to all who partic-ipated and helped with the event.

We are in the fourth grading period withmany activities on the horizon. Our springsport athletes are beginning their seasons.Prom preparations are ongoing for the May2 event at Grant’s Reception Hall, which begins with walk-ins at approximately 6:30.The Arts will be showcased on April 11 withthe ARTS Festival, and Graduation will beon May 17. Mark your calendars with theseimportant dates.

As always, thanks for your support of ourschool district. By working together, we canhelp students achieve.

    Yours in Education,Pat Ross

YEARBOOK ORDERS The yearbook staff is accepting orders forthe 2014-2015 yearbook until May 22. Ele-mentary yearbooks are $10 and the middle/high school yearbooks are $35.00. Very fewextra yearbooks are ordered beyond the pre-orders. Last year we sold out of yearbooks,so the only way to guarantee a yearbook isto preorder. Checks should be made out tothe school. Additional order forms areavailable in the high school and elementaryoffices or on the school website.

ARTS FESTIVALAntwerp Schools invite you to enjoy theartistic talents of our students at our springARTS Festival on Saturday, April 11 from4:00-9:00. We will have bands, choirs, andmusical groups of various ages performinglive, onstage in the auditeria. Artwork will be on display, and sandwiches as well asother food items will be available.

The Antwerp Football Program is sellinglaundry detergent until April 13. ContactMr. Altimus at ext. 2111 to order.

MR. BUTE—HS/MS PRINCIPAL As April begins, our students have enteredthe fourth quarter of the 2014-2015 schoolyear. I want to emphasize the importance ofour students remaining focused on their aca-demic performance to finish the year strong. As the weather improves, our students can be distracted from completing their assign-ments so we must work collaboratively tokeep them focused.

I continue to encourage parents to monitortheir child’s grades on Progressbook. It will provide you with the opportunity to access

your child’s grades and monitor his/her pro-gress. If you have any questions about yourchild’s grades, your first step is to contactthe teacher. You can contact the teacher viaemail or by phone, but it is important youcontact them with your questions. An effec-tive line of communication between thehome and school will help to strengthenyour child’s educational experience.

I am pleased to announce that OGT (OhioGraduation Test) week is complete. Iwould like to thank the students and staff fortheir efforts during this stressful week. Thisweek is mentally exhausting for the sopho-mores and upperclassmen who need to passall five parts of the test to be eligible for

graduation. The Spring OGT results will beavailable mid-May, and we will distributethem when they arrive.

Staying on the topic of standardized tests, the EOY (End of Year) Assessments will beadministered to students in grades 4-8, 10and 11. We have created an assessmentcalendar that begins on April 27 and runsthrough May 8, 2015. It is extremely im- portant that your child(ren) be present dur-ing the testing dates. This will be a vitaltime for the students, so please make surethey are getting plenty of rest and eatingwell-balanced meals. (6th grade—Reading,Math & Social Studies, 7th grade—Reading& Math, and 8th grade—Reading, Math &

    Science, 9th—Algebra I & English I, 10thgrade—American History, and 11th grade— American Government.

Prom: Any junior or senior attending the prom must complete a permission form. This permission form can be picked up fromMrs. Coleman. The permission form must be completed before you can purchase a prom ticket. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Coleman.

MR. MANZ—ELEMENTARYFinally, warmer weather has returned andallowed our students to get outside and en- joy the fresh air. As a reminder, the elemen-tary dress code only permits the students towear shorts during the months of April andMay in the spring, at the parents’ discretion. Also, flip-flops, sandals, and other open-toed shoes are not to be worn in the elemen-tary. The weather can change drasticallythroughout the course of the day, so please plan clothing choices accordingly.

Once again, I would remind those that pickstudents up after school to not park andleave your vehicle in the circle drive. Thiscreates a bottleneck, which causes cars todrive around other vehicles, making a dan-

gerous situation for our students. In addi-tion, if your child is walking to the parkinglot by themselves, you need to meet them atthe sidewalk so that they are not walkingamong the cars alone. Due to some closecalls, please follow the directives of thoseassigned to manage after-school pick-up.

We recently completed the first round ofstate testing for grades 3-5. I would like tothank our students and staff for a job welldone. It was apparent that the staff has donea good job in preparing the students forthese new types of assessments. The end ofthe year round of testing will be held theweeks of April 27-May 8 for grades 3-5.Please make every effort to have your stu-dents here during this time, so they can testduring the normal schedule and procedure. You can help your student prepare for thesetests at home by accessing practice testsfrom the Ohio Department of Educationwebsite.

The local Battle of the Books will be held atour school on April 21 at 1:00 p.m. Thewinning team will then compete at the coun-ty competition on April 30 at 12:30 p.m. atthe Youth Leadership Building at the Pauld-ing county fairground.

Dear Friends of the Paulding Exempted Vil-lage Schools,I am honored to serve as your Superintendentand look forward to continue working withthe students, parents, teachers, administra-tors, and the local and state officials to pro-vide opportunities for every student to excel

in this changing world. Paulding ExemptedVillage Schools are committed to providing atop-notch educational experience. We wel-come and encourage your participation, ques-tions, and comments so we can continuallyimprove our efforts and ultimately best servethe children of our district. A top priority ofmy administration is to provide the supportneeded to operate our schools. Our roadmapto the future is focused on four key areas:academic excellence, resource stability, com-munity awareness, and the overall studentexperience. It is difficult to believe there is just a coupleof months left in the 2014-2015 school year.Although the calendar indicates the year iswinding down, we are actually very busywith end of the year activities. Athleticevents, awards programs, concerts and stu-dent programs highlight the months of Apriland May. Please check the district calendar atwww.pauldingschools.org and support ourstudents with your attendance at these cele-

brations. Our last day of school this year is predicted to be June 2, 2015, pending anymore calamity days/ hours or more extendeddays, between now and the end of the year.We currently have missed 99.5 Instructionalhours which includes 11 full days cancelledand 14 two/three hour delays. We are cur-rently adding a half hour to each day in orderto make up some lost instructional time. Withall of the testing required in the State of Ohioincluding PARCC, OAA, and OGT for stu-dents, we feel it is important to get more in-structional time in with students now, insteadof adding the days/ hours at the end of theschool year. The missed days/hours have also

become an issue for graduating seniors. TheOhio Department of Education allows us toexcuse seniors from school three days earlyor 19.5 hours. If we continue our currentschedule of make-up days/hours, the seniorswould be required to return to school on May26, 2015 to May 29, 2015, which is fourschool days after graduation. We have care-fully weighed the pros against the cons ofadding time to the day and feel that extend-ing school days to make up instructionaldays/hours will be best for our students. Wewill also be using April 6 and 7 as make updays.May 4-8 is National Teacher AppreciationWeek with May 5 designated as NationalTeacher Day and May 6 is National School

Nurse Day. Please take time during this weekto thank a teacher who made a difference inyour life. We are proud of all our employeesincluding our bus drivers, cooks, aides, secre-taries and custodians, and believe they makea difference in the lives of children every dayas well.We have a major grant project that has beenin the works since 2010 with the Village ofPaulding called ‘Safe Routes to School’. The

project will work on providing sidewalks toand around the school on both the WaterStreet and the Emerald Road sides to thenorth and some to the south. Please be awarethe project will be going on from May toAugust of 2015 and may cause some delaysaround the area of Paulding Schools duringthat time.

This project will allow a safer route

for those students who walk to school. The Class of 2015 will celebrate Co

mmence-ment on May 24 at 2:30 as our 127 th graduat-ing class from Paulding High School. Theceremony will be in the high school gymna-sium. We congratulate our senior class ontheir many accomplishments in reaching thismilestone and wish them the best as theycontinue on a journey of lifelong learning. Also at this time we will be recognizing oursixth Academic Hall of Fame class. The in-ductees for this year are: Dr. Larry Tope(1973), Dr. Lonnie Tope, dec. (1970), Mr. HeathHawk (1993), and Major Jerrod Hawk (1994). Weare very proud of the academic and extracur-ricular achievements of our students, and themany outstanding staff members who workwith these students on a daily basis. As al-ways, I invite you to become an active part of

our school district and to get involved in the

lives of our young people by attending asmany of the student activities as your sched-ule allows. Please feel free to visit me at my office in thePaulding Administration office, call me at419-399-4656, ext 1510, or e-mail me [email protected] at your con-venience if you have any questions about ourschool district or anything in this communitynewsletter.Sincerely,William D. Wow! Spring is here. Only one grading periodremains for the Wayne Trace Class of 2015. Ithas been a great pleasure for me ge ng to knowmany of this year’s seniors, as they have made avery posi ve impression on me these past fourschool years. I believe I speak for many membersof our faculty and sta when I say that we will

miss several members of the Class of 2015.Speaking of spring, we are now entering what

is sta s cally the most dangerous me of yearfor high school juniors and seniors – spring break, prom, and gradua on. Please, let’s all emphasizeto our impressionable seventeen and eighteen-year- olds the importance of making wise deci-sions during this me of the school year. Despitewhat many juniors and seniors may believe, theparents are s ll calling the shots on most issuesinvolving students. It’s everyone’s responsibilityto step up, take charge, and lead our youngpeople down the right path and away fromdestruc ve decisions. Thank you for all you do inthis area of your child’s life.

Spring also brings upon us the next round ofthe tes ng season. Right or wrong, the OhioDepartment of Educa on grades much of ouracademic success on how well our studentsperform on the annual state mandated tests.

Because so much emphasis is placed on thesetests at the state level, we feel it necessary to putequal emphasis on these tests with our sta andstudents. That’s why it’s vital that we all worktogether during this ever- important me of theyear. Good a endance, good a enon, and agood a tude all go a long way in determiningsuccess at school. In addi on, the state of Ohiocon nues to raise the bar on academic achieve-ment, so we must also answer the call of dutyand expect more from our students. A failure todo so is a failure to ful ll our professional du es.As I’ve stated many mes, we must all worktogether, as success at school is a team e ortbetween home and school. Everyone plays avital part in the educa on of our students.

Turning our a en on to calamity days andmake up days, our district has now missed 97.5hours of me this year due to weather -relatedissues. We have already made up two days of

school by going to school on Presidents’ Day andby extending the school day for eight days. Thiscurrently leaves us with ve school days to makeup. At the me of this wri ng, the plan is for allve days to be made up at the end of the school

year, meaning school will be in session on May29 and June 1 -4 . With gradua on scheduled forMay 24, we may have the unpopular task of re-quiring our seniors to report to school followingthe gradua on ceremony in order to completetheir requirements for a high school diploma. Ifthe plan changes between now and the end ofthe year, we will communicate these changesthrough a variety of means: A message throughour Honeywell Instant Alert system, press releas-es in local newspapers, and no ces from schoolbuildings just to name a few. As always, we willdo our very best to keep you as well informed aswe possibly can concerning changes to the schoolcalendar.

Time is running out to nominate a former stamember to be considered for the 2015 WayneTrace Sta Hall of Fame, as our HOF commi eehopes to announce this year’s inductees at theMay BOE mee ng. Like in past years, we will hosta formal ceremony prior to a varsity footballgame to induct our new members. As always, wewould like to thank everyone who has nominateda former employee for this pres gious award, asthis honor would not be possible without mem-bers of our community playing such a key role inthe process.

Congratula ons to the cast and crew of thisyear’s musical. Directed by Mr. Joel Dunham,Miss Vranesevic, and Mrs. Kate Wenninger,Beauty and the Beast a racted very large crowdsfor each performance. Your con nued supportof our performing arts department is cri cal tothe overall development of our students andgreatly appreciated by everyone involved in thisdepartment.

Congratula ons also go out to our girls’ basket-ball team for capturing a sec onal championshipand to wrestlers George Clemens and TylerShowalter for qualifying for the state tourna-ment, both for the second year in a row.

Finally, we hope that all of our students had anenjoyable spring break and feel refreshed andready to go for the remainder of the 2014-2015school year.

As always, if you have ques ons or concernsabout your child’s educa onal experience atWayne Trace, feel free to contact your buildingprincipal or superintendent.

As April arrives we are hoping for warmerweather and an end to the many school delaysand cancela ons. The students are an cipa ngthe days in which they will be able to be outsidefor recess instead of being inside.

State assessment round one is complete. Thestudents worked very hard on these assess-ments. A large percentage of students enjoyedtaking the assessment on their computer. This isa major change from past years, but overall itwas a very good change. Beginning on Tuesday,April 28, we will take what the state calls the Endof Year (EOY) assessments. Once the studentshave completed the EOY assessment the scoresfrom this data will be combined with the scoresfrom round one. How the scores from bothround one and round two will be combined wedon’t know at this me. So, we will wait for thenal results.

This is the nal year for the OAA. This year

only the third grade take the OAA is the thirdgrade. The OAA reading assessment will be givento all third grade students on Tuesday, April 28.This is the same me in which grades 4 – 6 will betaking the PARCC English and Language EOYassessment.
