MANILA, July 31 (Mabuhay) — The Office of the Senate President told the Sandiganbayan on Thursday that it could not yet suspend Senator Juan Ponce Enrile over his pork barrel scam cases.

The letter, signed by Senate President Franklin Drilon’s chief of staff Atty. Renato Bantug Jr., said the body would still have to wait for the court’s decision on Enrile’s motion for reconsideration over his sus-pension. “This Office hereby manifests that it would take appropriate action on the suspension order upon the Honorable Court’s disposition of the motion for re-consideration..” the letter reads.

But in a letter sent by Enrile’s chief of staff Cherbett Maralit sent to Drilon’s of-

fice, and attached to the letter sent to San-diganbayan, Enrile’s camp said it would only file their motion for reconsideration on or before August 1, Friday.

The Senate said it could only suspend Enrile ”upon the lapse of the prescribed period to file the motion for reconsidera-tion and no such motion is filed,” Drilon’s letter read.

The court gave Enrile 90 days upon receipt of the resolution to file his appeal.

The anti-graft court has ordered Enrile’s suspension for 90 days, concurring with government prosecutors’ claims that the veteran lawmaker can use his position to influence witnesses and tamper with evidence. (MNS)

MANILA, Aug 1 (Mabuhay) – Over a month after she was diagnosed with lung cancer, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has filed a bill creating a patient-center quality of care initiative as well as pallia-tive care for patients with chronic disease.

Under her Senate Bill No. 2284, Santia-go seeks the establishment of a stakeholder strategic summit, quality of life education, awareness initiative, health care workforce training, an advisory committee, and pal-liative care-focused research.

“People living with a serious illness experience inadequately treated symptoms, fragmented care, poor communication with their doctors and enormous strains on their family caregivers,” Santiago explained in her bill.

Santiago said even in the United States, studies show that seriously ill patients are

supposedly not satisfied with the quality of their medical care despite soaring the country’s health expenditures due to “un-treated symptoms, unmet psychosocial and personal care needs, high caregiver burden, and low patient and family satisfaction.”

“In order to improve the quality of life of the patients and even their families, there should be public outreach and education on pain and symptom management of chronic diseases,” she said.

Santiago said palliative care is focused on the relief of the pain, stress, and other debilitating symptoms of serious illness, such as cancer; heart, renal, and liver fail-ure; lung disease; and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

“This bill seeks to address the symp-toms and needs of patients with chronic disease by providing the patients as well

MANILA, July 30 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III may not have mentioned the Freedom of Information Bill in his State of the Nation Address, but lawmakers, at the prodding of Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., expressed support Wednesday for its passage.

In his speech at the opening of Congress’ regular session on Monday, hours before the Sona, Belmonte pushed for the passage of an FOI law in the spirit of Section 7, Article 3 of the Constitution that recognizes the right of the people to information on matters of public concern.

“We must craft a viable FOI Law to promote greater transparency and strengthen accountability in government, without unduly restricting the latitude of options for government action in the delivery of services to the public and in responding expeditiously to the needs of our people,” he said.

Responding to Belmonte’s call, a number of congressmen expressed support for the FOI bill, which would mandate the disclosure of public records.

The Senate has passed its version of the FOI bill but it remains pending in the House of Representatives.

In a statement, Deputy Speaker Giorgidi Aggabao said that with the Speaker himself making a special pitch, there was now “a big chance” the FOI bill would pass this session.

“The only kink I see would be the busy schedule of Congress. The budget hearing plus the impeachment complaints would surely occupy a good part of our time,” said Aggabao, representative of Isabela.

Pampanga Rep. Oscar Rodriguez, chair of the committee on good government and public accountability, also welcomed the Speaker’s commitment to prioritize the FOI bill. “It is nice to hear the Speaker pitching for support for the FOI bill. If I remember it right, I was the first one to file the original bill in the Eighth Congress because of my experience with the military then,” he said.

Abakada Rep. Jonathan Dela Cruz, a member of the independent minority bloc, said it was high time the FOI bill was enacted into law.

“The FOI is one law which should have been passed a long time ago and should have been one of the priorities under this administration of ‘daang matuwid’ (straight path),” said Dela Cruz. Parañaque Rep. Gus Tambunting, author of one of the pend-ing FOI bills, lauded Belmonte for his declaration of support for the passage of the FOI law during the 16th Congress.

Why Senate can’t suspend Senator Enrile just yet

House members back passage of information law

Miriam wants greater access to palliative care for seriously ill patients

as their caregivers and families with greater access to palliative care,” the lady lawmaker said.

If passed into law, Santiago said the sec-retary of the Department of Health (DOH) should convene the strategic stakeholder summit one year after the effectivity of the law to analyze key health system barriers,

and identify strategic solutions.Aside from lung cancer, Santiago was

already suffering from chronic fatigue syn-drome that kept her away most of the time from major functions such as sessions and public hearings in the Senate. Santiago has said she was “very excited” upon learning about her health condition.

Some say the economic recession is leveling out, and there are signs of recovery on the horizon. However, like so many Americans today, you may feel otherwise. The past

5 reasons to consider Chapter 13 Bankruptcy

several years have been financially devas-tating to Americans. Millions have found themselves struggling to make their house payments and keep food on the table.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy provides finan-cial help for those who feel they have run out of options. Filing bankruptcy can give you the fresh start that so many Americans need today. Here are FIVE good reasons to consider filing for Chapter 13.

(1) Stop Foreclosures and Reposses-sions

Often by the time you decide to file for bankruptcy, your home could likely be in foreclosure. Wage garnishments and car repossessions are also a common among people seeking bankruptcy relief. When you file, all collection efforts, foreclo-sures, repossessions and garnishments are stopped. In a Chapter 7, you would receive this benefit of bankruptcy, but it would not last as long, perhaps only a few months. However, in a Chapter 13 these actions are stopped for the length of the bankruptcy, which can extend up to 5 years,

(2) Saving PropertyMost people are under a mistaken

impression that they will lose all of their property when they file. This belief often prevents people from filing and getting the help they need. This is actually not true. In bankruptcy, there are various exemptions available. If your assets come under one of these exemptions, you are allowed to keep it. The particular exemptions available to you will vary from state to state. But what if you have more assets than allowed by the exemptions? In a Chapter 7, you could lose some of your assets to the bankruptcy court. However, in a Chapter 13 if your assets exceed the amount of exemptions you have, you are given the opportunity to pay out the value of the asset in order to keep it. These payments would be divided over the length of the bankruptcy, three to five years.

(3) Time to Catch Up on Home and Car Loans

One big advantage to filing for Chapter 13 is you are allowed valuable time to catch up on payments that are in arrears. For example, if you are $10,000 behind your home loan, your mortgage lender may have already started foreclosure proceed-ings. Once you file bankruptcy, you will be able to make installment payments on the late mortgage payments. By the time the bankruptcy is over, assuming you have

remained current with your regular house payments, you will have also completely caught up with the back payments.

(4) Payments May be Cheaper in Chapter 13

There are some instances where it is more cost effective to file for Chapter 13. Let’s say that you owe $10,000. on a car that is worth $5,000. If you file for Chapter 7, you would continue paying on the loan amount of the car ($10,000). However, in a Chapter 13, under the appropriate cir-cumstances, you would only be required to pay for the value of the car ($5,000.). This not only saves you $5,000., but would also lower your car payment. How is this pos-sible? Because bankruptcy can discharge the unsecured portion of a secured debt, just as if it was credit card debt.

Or, let’s say you have a home loan and a second mortgage on your home. There is no value in the home over the pay off amount for the first mortgage, so there is no value securing the second. In Chapter 13, you are able to “strip off” the second mortgage completely.

(5) Your Income is Too HighSometimes the monthly income of the

bankruptcy filer is too high to qualify for a Chapter 7. Something called a “dispos-able income test comes into play here. If you were to file Chapter 7, a large portion of your debts would be wiped out, and you would be left with a lot more disposable income every month. If this amount of dis-posable income is too high, you would not be able to file for a Chapter 7. In a Chapter 13, this extra disposable income would be paid to the bankruptcy court, but only for the period of the bankruptcy.

Chapter 13 can have some distinct ad-vantages for individuals that need financial relief. You deserve to keep your home and have financial stability. It is important to note that laws vary state to state, so it is highly recommended that you contact an experienced bankruptcy lawyer for advice and guidance.

Dealing with financial problems is never easy. However, there are actions you can take to help you through the pro-cess and help put your financial problems behind you.

MANILA, Aug 1 (Mabuhay) – At least 160 added Bureau of Immigration personnel are being readied for deployment to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 to serve the passengers of five major airlines transferring their operations there.

The BI said this is part of its preparations to ensure smooth operations of the NAIA-3 with the expected increase in volume of passengers.

“We have augmented our existing manpower complement in NAIA-3 to properly meet the influx of passengers from the additional flights,” BI NAIA-3 Terminal head Mary Ann Velasco said.

In a news release, the BI said the added personnel will include immigration of-ficers, intelligence agents, security personnel and administrative staff.

Other transfer plans include additional equipment such as computers and pass-port readers.

“The deployment of 160 new immigration officers and coming in of new equip-ment in August is right in time for the transfer of the four other airlines in the coming weeks,” added BI Commissioner Siegfred Mison.

Mison likened his agency’s preparations to a “photo finish.”Airlines that transferred operations to NAIA-3 included Delta Air Lines, Royal

Dutch Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, and Cathay Pacific Airways.Mison said he expects the added immigration officers assigned to NAIA 3 to be

“highly trained and professional.”

Two million strong on July 27 during the 100th anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo at the world’s largest indoor Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan. Some of the faithful waited overnight in the pouring Manila rain to attend the centennial celebration of the Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ), in an event designed to show off the religion’s stunning success at home and abroad.

BOCAUE, July 27, 2014 (AFP) – As many as two million people gathered in the Philippine capital on Sunday to mark the 100th anniversary of a powerful home-grown church, showcasing the conserva-tive group’s discipline and influence.

Some of the faithful waited overnight in the pouring Manila rain to attend the cen-tennial celebration of the Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ), in an event designed to show off the religion’s stunning success at home and abroad.

Government officials monitoring the gathering estimated that 1.6 to two million people gathered for the INC centennial, packing out a massive new arena built to mark the occasion and the nearby 20,000-seat Philippine Stadium, as well as huge tents erected on the grounds for the event.

Eduardo Manalo, leader of the Iglesia, known as the INC, said in a special sermon broadcast live to the faithful that the swift completion of the new Philippine Arena was proof of the group’s divine support.

“The Philippine Arena was finished in two years and nine months when it should have taken five years. This is the work of God,” he said at the sprawling compound being developed by the church.

The occasion was also used as an attempt to set world records, with the 55,000-seat arena certified as the world’s biggest mixed-use theatre and the INC’s 4,745-member choir declared the world’s largest by an adjudicator from Guinness World Records.

Although the INC is a minority in the Philippines, where 80 percent of the 100 million people are Catholics, the Iglesia has considerable clout.

Media reports have estimated member-ship at around two to three million, with a rapid spread in scores of countries beyond the Philippines.

Outsize influenceThe Roman Catholic Church has for

centuries been the dominant religious force in the former Spanish colony.

The INC is at odds with the Church on many fundamental issues of doctrine, and numerous outsiders perceive it as a much more conservative brand of Christianity.

INC’s teachings are based on a rigid following of the Bible, and it insists only its members qualify for salvation.

Members are required to marry within the church and must give it a portion of their salaries as well.

More significantly, they are required to vote as a bloc for political candidates given the blessing of INC leaders. As a result, many politicians are quick to pay it their respects.

Ramon Casiple, head of the Manila-based Institute for Political and Electoral Reform, said Sunday’s massive gathering also served to project the INC’s influence on society at large.

“It cannot be denied that they are making use of the occasion to flex their muscles,” he told AFP.

“Their message is: we are here, you have to deal with us, particularly during the 2016 (national) elections,” he said.

Although Philippine President Benigno Aquino is not an INC member, he paid tribute to the group when he attended the opening of the Philippine Arena on July 21.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank the Iglesia ni Cristo for the sympathy you have shown your brothers. You have truly displayed sympathy, not just in words but also in deeds,” he said, citing the aid pro-vided to victims of the frequent natural disasters that hit the country.

“Thank you also for the support you have shown my administration in further-ing good governance,” he added.

INC’s 100th anniversary draws 2 million faithfuls

MANILA, July 31 (Mabuhay) – Former congressman Mark Cojuangco says had the government started running the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in 2010, the country could have prevented an impend-ing power crisis next year.

Cojuangco, a staunch nuclear power advocate, had a tour and lecture sponsored for some residents of Morong, Bataan about the BNPP.

Cojuangco says it will take 4 years to restart the BNPP.

In his lecture, Cojuangco showed resi-dents video and photo of his trip to various countries with nuclear facilities.

He addressed residents’ fears of a nuclear meltdown.

The BNPP was ready for operation since 1985. Government paid more than $2 billion including interest, and was fully paid in 2007.

Yet despite the enormous cost, consum-ers have not been able to benefit from the 620-megawatt plant.

Cojuangco appealed to President Aqui-no, his second cousin, to make the reopen-ing of Bataan nuclear plant his legacy in his remaining years in office. He noted this is not just for the Aquino administration but for future generation of Filipinos.

But Bataan vice governor Efren Pas-cual says the reopening of the nuclear power plant and even the plan to put up a coal fired power plant within the BNPP compound needs their approval as host province.

Pascual adds the provincial government has not made a decision on the reopening of the BNPP since it still wants to hear all sides of the arguments made by pro- and anti-nuclear power advocates. (MNS)

MANILA, July 31 (Mabuhay) – The Technical Education and Skills Develop-ment Authority (TESDA) debunked Thursday claims of irregularities in its use of funds from the disbursement acceleration program (DAP).

TESDA Secretary General Joel Villanueva said contrary to a report by the Com-mission on Audit that part of the controversial fund may have financed 61 “ghost scholars” in 2011, an internal investigation revealed only 38 were questionable due to double availments.

He also said TESDA has ordered schools that failed to implement the scholarship program to return the money allotted to them.

“We closed some of the programs in schools. In Quezon City about 8 or 12. One in Metro Manila. It was corrected and COA agreed with us. This is why they did not issue a notice of suspension or disallowance,” he said.

“[One school] said they had two shiftings. [Gusto kumita ng extra]. What we did is pinabalik natin. P40,000 binalik sa National Treasury.”

In the COA report, the agency noted that 61 scholars “attended multiple training courses which were held simultaneously.”

January 19. The trip will come six months after Francis’s first visit to Asia – an up-coming visit to South Korea scheduled for August 14 to 18 this year. Asia had been repeatedly been tipped as a destina-tion for possible papal trips as Francis’s predecessor Benedict XVI did not travel there during his eight-year pontificate. The continent is considered rich with potential for the Church. Catholics make up just 3.2 percent of the population in Asia, but the number of believers is growing steadily.

Francis will be travelling to Sri Lanka –

A few minutes after the first injection, and with a drip running, the patient’s heart started to pump under its own power and continued to do so after a few minutes..However, the fast beeping of the cardiac monitor suddenly slowed, and again the rush to find the pulse and the calls for “Epi” and “Compress” followed.

One more electric shock. One more round of resuscitation and then the patient’s heart rhythm stabilized., but there was no measurable blood pressure. She was within an inch of her life and we had to fight for fractions of that inch. One misstep and it would all be over. Even doing everything right, we could still lose on this day and in the days to come.

Suddenly, I caught the eye of the Criti-cal Care Fellow. I showed her my shaking hands. I will admit to choking occasionally in a resuscitation response and I have never frozen up nor had the shakes before, but I badly want this patient to live and come back whole.

So I ordered to “infuse more fluid!” But deliberated on it because the “right heart was too large and it’s cutting off the left side.”

At that very moment some questions kept creeping on me: “which medications can help to stabilize the pressure?” “What mode of breathing support to use?” What procedure can wait until ICU?”

Some questions were easier answered than others. But there were immediate concerns. Within half an hour, the patient’s heart reading holding, we bore a large IV access into a vein in her leg. and a smaller one into the artery beside it.

For the first time since her heart stopped, we were able to get a blood pres-sure reading direct from the artery 120/60.

To combat the potential brain damage from cardiac arrest, we sedated her heavily and started to cool her body with ice packs. A Kidney specialist was called in to plan for Dialysis. Then, we were able to move her to the ICU and performed the next wave

of procedures: a catheter to ease pressure directly inside the heart, another to allow Dialysis. Somewhere in these maze of machines, was a patient still at death’s door.

It was early morning when things have settled enough so I called the family for an update. The husband, her siblings, parents and in-laws all gathered in a conference room, where I explained what had hap-pened and what we were going to expect. I told them that “some things were pre-dictable but most things were not.” Their loved one was comatose after two cardiac arrests and remained in shock. Dialysis was being performed to control dangerous blood acid levels.

The bleeding risks from the Alteplase and other blood thinners would be greatest in the first twenty-four hours, as our brain-protective cooling therapy also increased the tendency to bleed. The heart would be expected to be stunned and weak for a couple of days but all invasive monitors were already in place, to allow in immedi-ate adjustments in therapy. At that moment in time, we had leveled the playing field, but the final outcome was still unknown. I also explained to them that “we can never promise outcomes, but we can promise an epic fight.”

The family meeting in a time of crisis is the most difficult part of our job. The chal-lenge is to paint a picture without confus-ing details, deal with emotions in the room and still get a sense of the overall stance of the family in coping with the patient’s critical illness.

As practicing doctors, we advise our medical students that the goal of critical care is “to protect the quality of life of a patient, not simply to save a life.”

After our meeting, I stayed a few more minutes at the patient’s bedside and read the monitors heart rate at a reasonable 95, Bp 140/80, saturation 97% and tempera-ture down to 33. This is the new baseline. I instructed all the nurses on duty, that if the patient wakes up whole, I will buy pizza for everyone in the ICU and ER departments, as a show of my confidence because our patient was pulseless for more than half an hour; had seven cardiac arrests which occurred over eighty minutes. Those eighty minutes were one of the longest in my life, but could also have been the last in our patient’s life.

Three days later, I fulfilled my promise by buying pizza for everyone because thankfully, our patient woke up and sur-vived.

Eighty minutes in saving the quality of a patient’s life (Conclusion)

I would like to share the following riveting Pulmonary Embolism story sent to my attention recently by Dr. Jep Palo , an Intensive Care Specialist, who works at the Medical City Hospital in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila.

“I remembered verifying the dose on my phone and check-ing on the ongoing resuscitation which had settled hundred-a- minute chest compressions, ten-a-minute respirations and adrenaline every four minutes.

Zagala said they have not monitored any recruitment nor any activities in connec-tion with the alleged destabilization moves against the Aquino administration.

“We remain professional and partisan free,” he added.

On Wednesday, a day after telling the media that retired generals were plotting

President Benigno Aquino III’s ouster, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said the Chief Executive had nothing to worry as the active officers weren’t going along with the plan.

“Mayroong retired military officials na nanghihikayat pero fortunately hindi ito kinagat ng mga active members kaya hindi po siya nagpo-progress into something serious,” Trillanes told reporters.

their jobs, del Rosario has said.Jose added that only a fraction had fled

since the government’s initial warning for Filipinos to leave Libya was issued two months ago.

“We’ve had that advisory (for Filipinos to leave Libya) for two months, but less than a thousand have come home. Can you just imagine the challenge we’re facing?” Jose said.

The Philippines previously launched a mass evacuation of its workers in Libya in 2011, when most of the 30,000 Filipinos there left during the violent chaos leading to the toppling of the late dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

Jose said about 4,500 returned to the Philippines in repatriation flights paid for

by the government at that time.Others were evacuated by their employ-

ers and international aid organizations. However, about 1,600 Filipinos, mostly

doctors and nurses, remained in Libya throughout the 2011 upheaval, according to government data.

Their numbers later increased after the Philippines lifted its travel ban for workers to go to Libya in March 2012.

That ban was re-imposed on May 30 this year, when the government also strongly advised all Filipinos already in the coun-try to leave, using their own resources, as security conditions deteriorated.

The mandatory evacuation announced last month puts the onus on bringing them home on the Philippine government.

funds allotted to the ghost projects of Na-poles NGOs from 2006 to 2010.

Atty. Joel Bodegon, Revilla’s lawyer, objected to the admission of the folders as evidence, since they were not cited dur-ing the pre-trial conference and covered alleged transactions outside the scope of the criminal information.

where some 7.0 percent of the population is Catholic – in a period of difficulty for the local church. He is expected to use his visit to encourage the church to push for reconciliation between Sinhalese and Tam-ils, bitter enemies since the 1983 to 2009 civil war whose animosity is threatening to tear the local Catholic community apart.

The Philippines trip will be held on a very different note: there are around 90 million Catholics in the country – 83 per-cent of the population – and the pontiff will hold masses with the faithful before likely visits to areas devastated by the Yolanda typhoon in 2013.

the tent cities and more than 8,000 families need to be relocated from the no-build zones. One of the most disastrous typhoons that visited the Philippines in recent time, Yolanda killed thousands and left millions homeless.

Local executives of Tacloban City wel-come Tacloban Recovery and Rehabilita-tion Plan (TRRP) in a city that used to earn P800 M a year and was down to P620 but urged “to please hurry” as the residents are becoming “frustrated day by day”.

For his part, Ta-cloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez whose own fam-ily had its share of misfortune from the November Super Howler, is rallying his townmated to accelerate the re-building effort and was in Southern California at the Jo-sephine Restaurant in Cerritos over the weekend upon the invitation of Taclo-ban CityAssocia-tion whose members have relatives in the Philippines similarly stricken. Accompa-nied by his wife Cristina, a former screen actress and now a politician herself, they were embraced and welcomed by their townmates at the event.

The reassuring presence of the Tacloban executive and his wife had local Tacloba-nons feel confident that something is being done to alleviate the conditions of their families and relatives back home.

* * *The nature of givingCalamities highlight the people’s pro-

pensity to be more generous to a point that their giving strikes to the bottom of the real significance of giving, that is, when giving really hurt. When Typhoon Yolanda devas-tated the Philippines in November last year, the very first respondents to help the people affected by the unusually strong typhoon from around the world were the better off. As if on cue, the wealthier benefactors had their resources shipped to the devastated areas even catching the recipient country by surprise if one looks on the logistics readiness of the rescue efforts.

As the damages became known, more help was flown, not only material forms but volunteer workers themselves who were unmindful of the inconveniences and hardship they would encounter.

What really drives people to help those in need? Who gives the most to charity?

Closer to home, that is, in California, one might be surprised that “people in the poorer areas often gave more to charity than their rich counterpart.

In Orange County composed of 34 cit-ies, “affluent residents of Ladera Ranch is the least generous zip code, based on adjusted gross income and amount given on returns, with the residents contributing 3.42 percent of their income”.

Buena Park, home to Knott’s Berry Farm, has the most generous zip code in Orange County when adjustments in gross income and amount given on tax returns are factored in. Aside from Buena Park, the most generous zip codes are in Santa

Ana and Anaheim. The least generous are in Trabuco Canyon, Irvine and Foothill Ranch.

In Los Angeles county, the most gen-erous zip codes are in the Compton area, Koreatown, and Westlake. The least gener-ous are in Playa Vista, Topanga, Calabasas, Glendale and Redondo Beach.

In the Riverside County, the most gen-erous zip codes are in Thermal, Cabazon, Hemet, Mecca and Desert Hot Springs. The least generous zip codes are in Mountain

Center, Temecula, Winchester, Corona and Quail Valley.

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez rallies townmates to rebuild provinceAfter the massive devastation of Typhoon Yolanda in five

most affected provinces, President Benigno Simeon Aquino reported in his State of the Nation Address the readiness of the blue print for the rehabilitation and recovery plans for Cebu, Iloilo, Eastern Samar, Leyte and Tacloban City. Some P28 billion has been earmarked for the project.

More than eight months after Super Typhoon Yolanda hit land, over 2,000 families still live in

Vacation Bible School to Mexico: Close to a hundred children from three churches attended the annual Vacation Bible School spearheaded by the Education Ministry of the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship of Orange County, a Filipino-American church. The project will be brought to an ethnic hill tribe in Mexico by the teaching group of Sis. Gigi Martinez and Orange M. Andres and their crew this August.

Tacloban City Mayor in Cerritos: Mayor Alfred Romualdez of Tacloban City and his wife Cristina visited Cerritos upon the invitation of Tacloban City Association of California and gave an update of the rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts in province brought about by Typhoon Yolanda more than eight months ago.

Susan Oca did it again!

After her suc-cessful stint host-ing a dance event for seniors last month, where she, together with some friends, bestowed awards to some seniors in differ-ent categories , Susan this time connected her se-niors to businesses that primarily have them as the target market.

M s . P e a c h y Formacion, Wells Fargo Bank Busi-ness Specialist and Ms. Linda Nery, FACLA treasurer and member of the Board of Directors, acted as the night’s emcees, skillfully coordinating the event’s sequence very well.

Fr. Erick Veloso delivered the in-vocation, setting the proper tone for the night’s affairs.

Businesses present took turns to present their products and services.

Here is Susan’s story:Susan came to America in search of the

American Dream. She left behind fam-ily, earthly possessions, fond memories. Armed with her God-given talents and a deep faith in the future, she braved the uncertainties of the New World. She went from one state to another, hopped from one job to another, in search of that elusive American Dream.

Until one day a few months back, responding to a friend’s call for help in hosting a similar event, she realized that using her feminine magic of creativity and resourcefulness, she can address seniors’ needs and make them happy. That day, she stopped searching; instead, she started creating the new American Dream.

Susan Oca (left) hosted the dance event for seniors last month, where she Peachy Formacion, Wells Fargo Bank Business Specialist (top right photo) and Linda Nery, FACLA treasurer and member of the Board of Directors, served as hosts.

This new American Dream discards the old notion that success should be measured by the accumulation of money alone; in-stead, she added the subjective dimension of personal happiness in the equation.

She believes that despite their finan-cial challenges, people can be happy. She believes that by adding more episodes of happiness in people’s lives, they will come to regard their lives as a success, and not a big disappointment because they lacked money. Under this new light, she believes that the best years in most people’s lives are not buried in the sands of the past, but are well sketched in the bright horizons of the future.

Among her sponsors are: Wells Fargo Bank, Tower Pharmacy, RJ Airwash, 24/7 HELPAlert, Starbright Homehealth, Dr. Veronico Agatep.

The event ended with the teary-eyed Susan humbly accepting the warm adula-tion of an adoring and grateful audience.

New York, NY – I was really just ex-pecting to reach her voice mail. My plan was to leave a voice message. But I hadn’t even had a chance to gather my thoughts when she picked after just two rings. And

instead of a generic “hello,” she greeted with me with a definite “Jannelle! Nice to hear from you!”

Of course I was delighted! The voice on the other line was Loida Nicolas-Lewis

wedding coordinator. She was also the one who suggested that I gave her best friend, Tita Loida, a ring, while in the city. “I’m very happy for you,” Tita Loida said. We chatted for a bit and I asked her if she had time because I wanted to consult something with her. Ten minutes was what I had in mind, when I asked. But five hours later, I found myself being ushered to the back corner table at a recognizable restaurant in New York.

So not only did she pick up my call and spoke to me for a few minutes on the phone; she also had time to meet me for dinner! Was thanking Tita Rocio. I knew it was going to be great. In my 20-year print and broadcast journalism career, I always say that one of my best interviews if not the best, was with Tita Loida. Not only is she candid and sincere; she’s also very humble, inspiring and full of wisdom.

Sharing with you some of the things I’ve learned from her:

“Everything will be alright in the end; if it’s not alright , it’s not the end.” – This

too? Although I had an inkling it had everything to do with Tita Rocio Nuyda, a very good friend who helped me as my

quote is being attributed to Brazilian writer Fernando Sabino, author Paolo Coelho, singer/songwriter John Lennon, and many others. But I first heard this from Tita Loida when I interviewed her for the first time. We were talking about how she overcame challenges when she first came on board as Chair and CEO of TLC Beatrice Inter-national when her husband who started and grew the company, passed away. In many ways, this quote is something we could keep in our pockets, offering hope and encouragement for challenging times.

“Never allow yourself to be used. You may take some in, in the beginning; but know when to say enough.” - She said to me over dinner, as I consulted her about a recent decision I made. I must be honest, it felt good to be validated by a woman of her caliber. And this quote is something to keep in mind, when entering and maintain-ing any relationship – personal or business.

“You can be married, have kids and have a career... just make sure you can af-ford a good nanny or sitter.” – We talked about how women feel that they have to take a step back from what they have built professionally, in order to build something personally. But this practical advice actu-ally makes sense.

“Never believe in your own press re-lease.” – She told me once, after explaining that she’s had her share of failures and bad business decisions. It could be the fastest route to failure... when you rest on your laurels, thinking you’re great because of what your own press release states.

“Be a teflon.” – Tita Loida shared this piece of advice with me when we started talking about difficult people. “There will always be people who are mean. But mostly, it’s because they are ignorant,” she said; and as a devout Catholic, she added: “Pray for the mantel of protection over you and your family. And then be a teflon... whatever they hurl at you bounces back at them.” Word.

“The only way to deal with evil is kind-ness. Guard your heart that it doesn’t build resentment; but cultivate compassion.” – It is not always easy to do. But this great and accomplished woman talking to me is the epitome of humility and compassion. And she’s basing this nugget of wisdom from the Bible; who are we to question?

“If at first you don’t succeed, find an-other priest.” – This after laughs about our experiences with the Catholic church. Teachings are in place; but sometimes, dif-ferent priests have different interpretations of the doctrines.

“As your children get older, you have to change the way you speak to them.” - She said about parenting. She proceeded to talk to me about her pride and joy, daughters Leslie and Christina and their respective families.

As we were being served our desserts, at the end of a great dinner with delicious food and even more sumptuous conversa-tion, I reminded her of one other thing that I will never forget from our first interview... “Remember what you told me about one love?”

“Nag-iisang gloria” – She corrected me, with a hearty laugh and a sparkle in her eyes. Immediately I knew I was able to reel her back. As we started the evening talking about my wedding and my husband; we ended it with her graciously sharing stories about her marriage to Reginald Lewis, her one love.

– social civic leader, author, motivational speaker, lawyer, in-dustrialist and philanthropist, and arguably the most esteemed and most successful Filipina in the United States. I was honored that she picked up my call and humbled that she had my number stored on her cell phone.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, July 25, 2014 – It was a reality check statement that caused a respectful hush to fall over the crowd of public officials, media, community leaders and volunteers that gathered at the Community Kick-Off for Pistahan Parade & Festival of the Fili-pino American Arts Exposition (FAAE), held recently at the Mayor’s Confer-ence Room of San Francisco City Hall: “A key current population fact that impacts us today is out of the estimated 3.5 million Filipinos in the U.S., 49 percent or nearly half is comprised of second generation Filipinos.”

ABS-CBN North America Managing Director Olivia De Jesus, after citing figures from the 2010 U.S. Census and pertinent research surveys on this grow-ing segment of Filipinos who are born or raised in the U.S., posed these questions for reflection:

“How do we reach out to the next generation of Filipinos in a way that is meaningful and impactful to them? “Who do we partner with that share common objectives of serving the Filipinos, have the credibility and expertise to engage with this generation and represent its interests? “Where can we launch an outreach initia-tive that captures the vision and mission of TFC and honors the legacy of Pistahan in San Francisco?”

Applause greeted these questions from De Jesus, recently chosen by FAAE as the Hermana Mayor, an equivalent of Grand Marshal, of the 2014 Pistahan Parade & Festival at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, scheduled for August 9-10, 2014.

She was presenting the case for her Pistahan Legacy Project, a requirement by FAAE from those who have held the position of Pistahan’s Hermano and Hermana Mayor. For years, ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Chan-nel (TFC), the world’s largest 24-hour Filipino multiplatform news and entertain-ment network, has been a solid partner

of Pistahan, billed as the largest annual two-day celebration of Filipino culture and pride in the U.S. As De Jesus mentioned in her presentation,

TFC has observed the growing pres-ence and influence of the younger Fili-pino American leadership and volunteer network of the event, even if mostly first generation Filipinos still attend it. “This ‘next gen’ has been driving a major Filipino cultural event in a big city like San Francisco year in and year out,” said De Jesus.

“We need to contribute a platform to continue encouraging and expanding such involvement, allowing them to nur-ture their talent and express their ideas in serving the Filipino.” Assembling the Legacy Team: Finding the Perfect Partners Perhaps it’s the universe creating syn-chronistic meets among the like-minded that TFC has found a fitting partner for its outreach to the ‘next gen’ in a youth-ful team of social innovation junkies calledNextDayBetter. Its New York-based Filipino American CEO and Chief Builder and Fulbright Scholar Ryan Letada, whose life goal is “to squeeze social good out of awesome ideas”, explained in a nutshell: “NextDayBetter is a culture platform that builds and activates diaspora communi-ties literally to make the ‘next day better’.” NextDayBetter’s Head of Partnerships John Paul “JP” Capulong, a Filipino Amer-ican and Bay Area native, represented his team at the Pistahan Community Kick-Off and shared: “Our team has been travelling to key cities in the world to create hubs for innovation, bring thinkers and change makers together to share their stories, ignite meaningful conversations and pur-poseful actions to create a better future.” A better future is made up of better lives for people.

This is the vision of ABS-CBN Foun-dation International (AFI), the U.S.-based non-profit, non-governmental philanthropy arm of ABS-CBN dedicated to improving

the lives of disadvantaged Filipino families in the Philippines and around the world. Managing Director Jo Ann Kyle empha-sized its mission: “While the Foundation has almost become synonymous to its popular programs, Bantay Bata (Child Watch) and Sagip Kapamilya (literally Family Rescue) which has raised millions of dollars to assist calamity victims in the Philippines, we commit to improve the quality of life of every Filipino genera-tion and make a significant impact in the strategic areas of child care, environment, education, disaster management and com-munity development. We do this by lever-aging the power of media and partnering with concerned sectors of society.”

No less than FAAE President and San Francisco Entertainment Commissioner Al Perez, who is a self-described 1.5 genera-tion Filipino, personally relayed his grati-

tude to the Foundation for the Pasig River rehabilitation work it did in his hometown, Sampaloc, Manila.

The 2014 Pistahan Legacy Project: TFC Speaker Salon Powered by NextDayBetter With AFI and NextDayBetter, De Je-sus knew that the proverbial stars have aligned for her Pistahan Legacy Project. “Through AFI and its many advocacy programs, we give the Filipino youth in the U.S. the opportunity to build ideas and to work on concrete solutions for causes closest to their hearts,” she said. “Through the expertise of NextDayBetter, we create a credible platform for ‘next gen’ thinkers and change makers to connect, engage and exchange ideas and inspire action. For the venue, we will get inspiration from the imaginative San Francisco landmark, Chil-dren’s Creativity Museum, at the Pistah-an grounds in Yerba Buena Gardens.”

away our sins and allows us to be reborn and enter heaven.

Recently I had two clients who died after their Chapter 7 bankruptcy was filed. In the first case, the debtor was a young man of 40. He was a perfectly healthy man who worked out every day, happily married for 5 years, owned a house with $120,000 of equity, and ran a small business. He had some credit card debt, not much. He decided to go on a vacation with his wife to an island paradise in the Caribbean. It was to be a two-week vacation, relaxing and having fun in the sun with their 4-year old son. On the third day on the island, he starts to get flu like symptoms which gets worse and worse. He is brought to the hospital which diagnoses his symptoms as just an ordinary case of influenza. On the 2nd day in the hospital, the diagnosis is changed to pneumonia. He has hard time breathing. Wife decides to fly him back to San Diego. The hospital bill plus the cost of flying back to San Diego costs $30,000. They have no medical insurance. For the first week of medical treatment in San Diego, the cost is $300,000. Wife signs a guarantee for the medical bill. Wife sees me because she says there is no way that they can pay that bill. Does it make sense to file for Chapter 7 relief at this point? Sure it does.

If they file for bankruptcy at that point in time, all their unsecured debt, includ-ing the $300,000 incurred in San Diego and the $30,000 incurred on the island will be discharged. At the same time, the bankruptcy will protect the $120,000 of equity in their house. So, with a Chapter 7 discharge, they can keep their house and other assets, including the small business that they run, while getting rid of $330,000 of medical bills. A week after we file the bankruptcy, husband slips into a coma and dies. I know young people in their forties do not think of dying, but the fact is death

does come like a thief in the night and does not discriminate between old or young. One day you’re perfectly healthy with no worries, the next day, your face to face with Jesus, your creator, Lord and Sovereign.

Death does not end the bankruptcy proceeding as long as the case is filed before the date of death. Wife will appear at the 341a meeting of creditors and be examined by the trustee to testify as to their financial matters. A death certificate must be presented to the trustee who will still ad-minister the bankruptcy estate despite the death of debtor. We inform the trustee that new hospital bills amounting to another $80,000 have come in and schedule F will be amended accordingly. There is a big ad-vantage to the wife who is left behind. She is able to keep the house, all their assets and their business but she does not have to pay the hospital bills which have now reached $400,000. Her personal guaranty to answer for all the medical bills of her husband will be discharged. Husband’s credit card debt of $40,000 will also be discharged. Without the pre-death bankruptcy, creditors and the hospital will sue the husband’s estate in probate court for $400,000.

We will discuss the 2nd case next week. “And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” – Genesis 3:13.

Deathbed BankruptcyI don’t really want to talk about death but everyone dies

whether we like it or not. Blame Adam for that. If Adam did not eat of the forbidden fruit in Paradise, then we would still have the superior body that never gets sick and never dies. But we are forever indebted to Jesus, the son of the one true God, the God of Moses and Israel, my God, for becoming man and dying on the cross so that we can have eternal life with them in Paradise once more. It is the blood of Jesus that washes

The US economy rebounded vigorously in the second quarter, growing at a peppy 4.0 percent pace that erased the impact of the sharp winter contraction, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.

But the Federal Reserve remained cau-tious, sticking to its dovish stance after a two-day monetary policy meeting, still seeing some latent weakness that requires keeping interest rates low for the foreseeable future.

The initial estimate of second-quarter growth was far better than expected and showed solid recovery in private invest-ment and consumer spending, especially on durable goods like cars and appliances.

In addition, government spending, which dragged on gross domestic product for the last six quarters, added to the expansion. That suggested that the severe weather and a modest slump in confidence between De-cember and March were indeed behind the winter slowdown, as economists have said. But the fresh data, which included upward revisions for the past year, also showed the economy generally has more momentum than earlier thought.

The Commerce Department said the January-March contraction was only 2.1 percent, compared to the more severe 2.9 drop percent previously reported, and it upped its estimate of growth in 2013 to 2.2

percent from 1.9 percent, due to a much stronger second half.

“This is not just a case of better weather. There is evidence to indicate that there has also been an underlying improvement in the economy, and that robust growth will be sustained into the third quarter,” said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit.

Fed still sees weaknessThe fresh data supported the rise in calls

for the Fed to move more quickly to address allegedly overheated asset markets, the growth in risky investment, and a pickup in inflation.

So-called “hawks” worried about infla-tion say the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee needs to accelerate its plans to raise the benchmark federal funds rate up from near-zero only in the second half of next year.

Indeed, one FOMC member dissented from Wednesday’s policy decision, saying its open-ended commitment to the ultra-low rate “does not reflect the considerable economic progress that has been made,” including the sharp fall in joblessness and the pickup in prices.

The committee as expected said the economy was strong enough to further reduce its monthly bond purchases by $10 billion to $25 billion a month. The program, which was at $85 billion last December, is slated to wind up in October.

With Summer ending soon and The

Real Estate Market slowing down fast, we might feel the effects of the market easing. In a typical Real Estate Transaction there would be at least 25-35 people benefitting from this transaction. From your agents all the way to your pool person, gardeners, constructions people, your mom and pop liquor stores.

There is a tremendous domino effect to every deal that closes in Real Estate. With fewer homes selling and fewer buyers will-ing to go up in prices this might hinder a good Christmas for a lot of people.

I also heard from the grapevine (not confirmed) that the lenders are going to change the guidelines on homeowners who had just Short Sales their properties, the newest guideline was that they could buy as early as one year to two years with condi-tions, now they are planning to move that back to four years. Will keep you posted.

This is a great time to do some research and set goals on how to purchase a home in the future for first time buyers. Thank you for your very interesting topic request or inquiries.

Walgreens, the drug retail chain, was reportedly sued by its California employees for, among other things, failure to provide employees the required meal and rest breaks and for fail-ing to pay employees for time spent at work undergoing secu-

rity searches. The parties recently agreed to settle the case for about $23 million, which will benefit about 40,000 Walgreens employees in California.

Of interest here is the employees’ claims of unpaid time for being subjected to secu-rity searches. This type of claim seems to be more and more in the news lately. Post-shift security checks are nothing new. Re-tail companies, concerned with employee theft of their merchandise, set up detailed security measures to minimize their losses. However, the procedure may result in wage losses to employees who spend significant time going through security checkpoints.

Under California law, employees should be paid for all hours worked. “Hours worked” is that time when an employee is subject to the control of an employer. When employees perform preparatory and concluding activities at work, it can be argued that they are under the control of the employer.

However, an employees’ preparatory or concluding activity must be paid only if it is “integral and indispensable” to the em-ployee’s principal activities, or is required by law or company rules. This means an activity must be (1) “necessary to the prin-cipal work performed” and (2) “done for the benefit of the employer.”

Some months back, we reported on a case regarding warehouse employees at Integrity Staffing Solutions, Inc., a sub-contractor to Amazon.com. The employ-ees sued their employer in a class action, alleging that they spent an average of 25 minutes per day of unpaid time going through required security screenings at the end of their shifts.

The Appellate Court decided that since

the required security screenings were in-tended to prevent theft, it is thus an integral and indispensable part of the employer’s business.

Therefore, the employees may state a claim for back wages. The employer ap-pealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which agreed to review the case.

The high court must decide, once and for all, whether warehouse employees must be paid for time spent undergoing security screenings to detect stolen merchandise.

In an interesting twist, the U.S. Depart-ment of Labor (DOL) has filed a brief in support of the employer’s position. Aside from wanting to clarify how the law should be enforced, the DOL said the government is interested in the case’s outcome because it also has many employees who are re-quired to undergo security checks at work.

Of course, a change in federal law may or may not affect California’s own laws. However, since California’s enforcement policy on preparatory and concluding activities is similar to the federal position, the high court ruling in this case is hotly anticipated.

small business owners over the last 16 years. If your business is family-owned, there’s a good chance that your business problems are also affecting your marriage and your home life because of the stress that you are experiencing. Your business could be your family’s only or main source of income so if the business is not doing well, the whole family suffers with it. You may try to separate one from the other, but you can’t.

Right now you may be consumed with stress and fear about what is going to hap-pen. If you’re like small business owners, perhaps you’ve even used your own credit to fund your business. If you are a corpo-ration or an LLC, most creditors will ask for a personal guarantee on the business debts so if the business doesn’t pay, then you are personally liable for the financial obligations of the business. Should you, the business or both file bankruptcy? It depends on how liabilities are allocated.

A lot of people seem to think that once they file a personal bankruptcy, they will automatically lose the business. I’ve heard this many times from a lot of business owners who have sat across my desk to seek legal counseling. However, this is not necessarily true. As a matter of fact, most people who file bankruptcy keep their business and if they are able to get rid of their personal debts, they end up in a much better financial position because it often helps the cash flow situation. Every business is different so I cannot generalize any statement I make here. But a knowledgeable bankruptcy attorney will be able to help you understand your options in dealing with both the business and personal obligations. The important thing is that you should not come to your own conclusions without seeking legal counsel and this step alone could be what saves your business and your family from a financial disaster.

If your business is on its way to failing because the expenses exceed the income you are generating, you may be on a fast track to failure if you don’t take action right away. The real tragedy I have seen over the years is that so many failed busi-nesses actually could have been saved had the owners taken action soon enough to look at all the options available before throwing in the towel. Please don’t let this happen to you.

Whether you own a business or not, if you are struggling financially and you are running on very limited resources, I would

like to help you understand all your options to help you turn your situation around. For a free personal consultation, you can schedule an appointment by calling TOLL FREE 1-866-477-7772. We have offices in Pasadena, Cerritos and Valencia.

MANILA, July 29 (Mabuhay) – Amid the move of government prosecutors for the detained senators to be transferred to a regular jail, two senators filed on Monday a resolution for Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. to remain detained at the Camp Crame compound while the pork barrel scam hear-ings are ongoing.

In Senate Resolution 798, Senators Vi-cente Sotto III and Gregorio Honasan said the three lawmakers should “have access to facilities and the space to continue to function as duty elected representatives of the people.”

They said the three senators are pre-sumed innocent until final conviction by the proper court citing Section 14, Article III of the 1987 Constitution which states that “in all criminal prosecutions, the ac-cused shall be presumed innocent until the contrary is proved.”

The three senators are facing plunder and graft charges in connection with the alleged misuse of their Priority Develop-ment Assistance Fund (PDAF) allocations.

Enrile is staying at the PNP General Hospital while Estrada and Revilla are detained at the PNP Custodial Center, both located at Camp Crame. Also detained there is Revilla’s staff, Richard Cambe.

On the other hand, two of their co-accused, alleged pork scam brains Janet Lim-Napoles and lawyer Gigi Reyes, are both detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.

Prosecutors earlier asked the court to transfer the detention of Estrada, Revilla, and Cambe to Camp Bagong Diwa which is under the Bureau of Jail Management

and Penology. They said the four-room bungalow

in Camp Crame where accused Revilla, Estrada and Cambe are being held “was originally built as barracks for officials of the Custodial Service Unit of the PNP. Hence, it is not a detention facility.”

They added that the continued deten-tion of accused at their present locations affords them special treatment as they are subjected to different rules and procedure not afforded to all other detention prison-ers under BJMP control citing Estrada’s wedding anniversary party which resulted to the relief of the facility’s warden, Supt. Mario Manala.

The Sandiganbayan, in separate resolu-tions, earlier ordered the 90-day suspension of Enrile and Estrada but the Senate has yet to implement it as the matter is still under appeal.

The camps of Enrile and Estrada have earlier signified intentions of appealing the suspension orders against them.

Once suspended, they will not be al-lowed to perform their function as senators such as filing bills or signing documents.

The anti-graft court, meanwhile, has yet to issue any suspension order against Revilla. (MNS)

Sotto, Honasan call for continued detention of Enrile, Jinggoy, Revilla in Crame

MANILA, July 29 (Mabuhay) – Despite initially opposing her transfer, alleged pork barrel fund scam brains Janet Lim-Napoles seemed to have changed her mind and now has no problems with staying in another de-tention facility inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig. This was according to her lawyer Bruce Rivera, who, after inspecting and being briefed about the security measures inside Camp Bagong Diwa, said they are now convinced that Napoles’ transfer from Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna was for the better.

It was a Makati court, trying her on charges of serious illegal detention, that originally ordered Napoles’ detention in Laguna. But the Sandiganbayan, which is hearing separate cases of plunder and graft against Napoles, ordered her transfer to Taguig. Citing security reasons, Napoles’ camp initially opposed the transfer. But after the Makati court did not object to the transfer, Napoles was finally brought to Camp Bagong Diwa Monday night.

“Initially, ang issue namin is security ... kasi di pa naman namin nakikita ang security set-up [that time],” Rivera said.

“But now [after] looking at the security [aspect], wala naman kaming nakitang problema,” he said. Rivera accompanied Napoles from Laguna to Taguig.

Inspector Aris Villaester, spokesman of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-National Capital Region, as-sured Napoles of her security while in their custody and added that she will have to first stay at a small “isolation room” inside Camp Bagong Diwa for about a week.

MANILA, July 29 (Mabuhay) – Presi-dent Benigno S. Aquino III on Tuesday called on the Muslim community to help sustain the gains of positive reforms under his administration as the country joins them in celebrating Eid’l Fitr, the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

In his message on the occasion of Eid’l Fitr, President Aquino said the recent sign-ing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro proved that the Filipinos and the Muslim community remained “one nation bounded by a common dream” even amid conflict.

“...A new era of peace that will re-bound to the upliftment of the lives of our kababayans. Let us sustain the gains of positive reform and be steadfast stewards of unity and development in our society,”

he said. The Chief Executive noted that Islam

has taught many of Muslim brothers and sisters the values and principles that can lead to solidarity, honor and harmony.

“May this (celebration) be also a reaf-firmation of your faith as you prepare yourselves for the challenges that may arise in our rapidly shifting milieu; may you always be enlightened by the teachings of Islam that hold true to the collective con-science of the Filipino people,” he added.

For her part, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Secretary Teresita Quintos Deles said the country welcomed Rama-dhan with much progress and high hopes of the Filipino people in the Mindanao peace process.

Bangsamoro (CAB), signed on March 27, received acclaim from various stakehold-ers in the country and also abroad as it concludes 17 years of peace negotiations and the decades-old armed conflict,” she said in a statement.

As the country begins the implementa-

tion of the CAB, Deles said that President Aquino has vowed to push ‘with convic-tion’ the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law. She said many lawmakers will also take on a historic step of deliberating a landmark legislation for peace in Mind-anao. (MNS)

Aquino urges Muslim brothers to support gains of positive reform

MANILA, July 29 (Mabuhay) – Vice President Jejomar Binay supported Presi-dent Benigno Aquino’s call that reforms introduced during his term will continue beyond 2016.

In his State of the Nation Address on Monday afternoon, Aquino expressly stated that his successor should continue key policies he introduced beginning 2010.

For the Vice-President, he said the people would want a government that is transparent and responsive to their needs.

“Congressional approval of the Free-dom of Information (FOI) advances the reform agenda, as it further institutional-izes the principles of accountability and transparency in government. These are core reform principles that I fully support,” Binay said.

He added that the people need leaders who advance the people’s interests, place the nation above self, ready for the job, and ensure that economic growth benefits all.

The vice president released the state-ment amid criticisms he was disappointed

with Aquino’s speech. A news report said he hardly clapped during the address.

“President Aquino spoke from the heart yesterday and I commend him for his can-didness and sincerity,” Binay said.

He said the Housing and Urban Devel-opment Coordinating Council (HUDCC), where he is chairman, has contributed in pushing forward the administration’s social agenda.

“As part of the Cabinet’s human devel-opment and social protection cluster, the housing sector supports the President’s program to deliver beneficial services to the most needy among our people. Indeed, this is one of the bright spots in our nation’s onward march toward inclusive growth and sustainable economic development,” Binay said. (MNS)

OPINIONMANILA, July 28 (Mabuhay) – President Aquino, in an

emotional State of the Nation Address on Monday, chal-lenged Filipinos to begin looking beyond his administration and decide who will continue - or stop - his reform and “transformation” agenda in 2016.

Choking up towards the end of a 1.5-hour speech, the President said those currently criticizing the government and programs - particularly the controversial Disburse-ment Acceleration Program (DAP) - are anti-reform and anti-people.

He then invoked the spirit and legacies of his father and mother - the martyred oppositionist Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., and former president Cory Aquino - in urging Filipinos to choose a successor with “not even an iota of doubt” (walang katiting na duda) in terms of commitment to his “Daang Matuwid” reform mantra.

After listing achievements made possible by continuing reforms of his administration in the past four years, Mr. Aquino capped his speech with a challenge to the people to make sure they continue to reap the fruits of these by picking the right leader to succeed him.

He began this drift with an emotional reminder of the legacy of his parents, the martyred senator Ninoy whose 1983 assassination hurtled the anti-dictatorship protests into the 1986 people power revolt; and Corazon Cojuang-co-Aquino, who became the first president of that restored democracy.

“Pag tinalikuran ko ang ating sinimulan, parang tina-likuran ko na rin ang aking ama’t ina [If I turn my back on what we’ve begun, it’s as if I’ve turned my back on my father and mother],” he said, his voice cracking.

He said he would only suggest one yardstick for choos-ing the next leader of the land in 2016: “Sino ang wala ni katiting na dudang magpapatuloy sa repormang ating nasimulan [Who’s the one who without an iota doubt will pursue the reforms we’ve begun]?”

Transformation, he added, can be made permanent, by God’s grace, if people are united.

When that happens, he said, reminding people again of his parents, he paraphrased Ninoy: “we can prove again the Filipino is worth is dying for,” which was greeted by applause.

MANILA, July 30 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III can rely on the support of the Nacionalista Party with regards to the impeachment complaints filed against him at the House of Repre-sentatives, Senator Cynthia Villar said Wednesday.

Villar said that even though the NP as a whole has yet to discuss and make an official stand on the impeachment complaints, she believes the party will not sever its ties with the ruling Liberal Party led by the Aquino.

“He (can) rely on us and unless magbago yung NP, I don’t think (the) Nacionalista will support (the impeachment complaints). Wala pa silang pinag-uussapan pero we are part of the coalition. As a whole, hindi naman kami magbe-break ng coalition,” she said.

Villar is the wife of NP president and former Senate President Manny Villar, who lost to Aquino during the 2010 presidential elections.

She, however, said their members are still free to air their opinions and make a stand.

The NP has 25 members in the House of Rep-resentatives where three impeachment complaints against the President have been filed. The House of Representatives is dominated by Aquino allies.

“Of course, every person ...kahit you belong to a party and may personal decision ka, inaallow namin sila to make their own personal decision.

But, as a whole, tingin ko naman, they will support the President pero syempre, kung may members kami who feel strongly about certain issues, we al-low them to exercise their own prerogative sa mga ganun,” Mrs. Villar said.

In case the impeachment complaint reaches the Senate, Sen. Villar will serve as one of the judges of the Senate impeachment court.

Aside from Sen. Villar, other NP members in the Senate are the Cayetano siblings (Alan Peter and Pia), Antonio Trillanes IV and Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.

The President is currently facing three impeach-ment complaints – two over the Disbursement Acceleration Program and one over the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the US.

Sen. Villar, a businesswoman prior to her stint in politics, believes the DAP is a good strategy to boost the economy.

“I’m a Business Administration major so I can understand the economic explanation that if you want to raise GNP (Gross National Product), then you have to encourage public spending so siguro yun ang reason for DAP, to encourage economic activities through increase in public spending. Of course, yung legality is a different matter, I’m not a lawyer so I don’t comment on the legality,” she said. (MNS)

MANILA, July 30 (Mabuhay) – Former miltary rebels turned lawmakers belonging to the Magdalo party-list on Wednesday threw their support be-hind President Benigno Aquino III who is facing three impeachment complaints before the House of Representatives.

“By and large, despite some gaps, we still be-lieve in the President,” Magdalo party-list Rep. Francisco Ashley Acedillo, a former Air Force officer, said at a press briefing.

For his part, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Ale-jano, a former Marine officer, said he believes the

President is doing his best in leading the country despite the various controversies his administra-tion has been facing in recent months.

Acedillo and Alejano were among military officers charged and detained during the Arroyo administration for going against the government.

Aquino is facing three impeachment com-plaints – two over the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program and the other, over the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement the government recently signed with United States. (MNS)

CASERTA, July 28, 2014 (AFP) - Pope Francis has asked forgiveness from Protestant Pentecostal-ists persecuted by Catholics under Italian fascism in the 1930s, religious news agency i.media said Monday.

“Among those who persecuted and denounced the Pentecostalists – almost as if they were crazy people who tarnished the race – there were also Catholics,” Francis said during a meeting with 350 Protestant evangelicals in Caserta in southern Italy.

“I am the shepherd of Catholics, and I ask forgiveness for those Catholic brothers and sisters who did not understand and were tempted by the devil,” he said.

Italian fascists persecuted Pentecostalists and other Protestants under laws that were not revoked until the 1950s, and the Catholic Church is widely held to have supported their harassment.

A 1935 bill outlawed the Pentecostalist “cult” in Italy, saying it was “harmful to the physical and psychic integrity of the race”.

Aquino: Start thinking about 2016

MANILA, Aug 1 (Mabuhay) – Like President Benigno Aquino III, four other top government officials suffered drops in their approval and trust ratings after the Supreme Court ruling on the Dis-bursement Acceleration Program (DAP), pollster Pulse Asia reported Friday.

The SC’s adverse ruling on the DAP failed to improve Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno’s ap-proval ratings, which slid from 40 percent last March to 35 percent in June.

Sereno’s trust ratings were also virtually un-changed from 36 percent last March to 32 percent in June.

Vice President Jejomar Binay, whose opposition coalition has been criticizing the use of the DAP, also saw a decline in both his trust and approval ratings.

Binay’s approval ratings dipped from 87 percent

in March to 81 percent in June. His trust ratings also decreased from 86 percent in March to 79 percent during the survey period.

The Pulse Asia survey was conducted on 1,200 Filipino adults from June 24 to July 2 this year, cov-ering the period the SC declared the DAP as partially unconstitutional. The pollster earlier reported a significant decline in President Aquino’s approval and trust ratings after the DAP ruling.

Malacañang has appealed the SC decision on the controversial spending mechanism, maintaining that it was undertaken in good faith.

The survey also covered the period of Senators Ramon Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada’s arrests on plunder charges for the alleged pork barrel scam. These arrests, however, failed to give a positive effect on Congress leaders’ ratings.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Filipino Community today lauded a California-based company for its decision to delete a scene in its customer service training video that negatively portrayed Filipino healthcare workers.

CRM Learning of Carlsbad, California, said it will also withdraw the training video from the market after the Philippine Em-bassy, the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) and the Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) told the company the customer service training video violated cultural sensitivities.

“We welcome the expeditious and com-prehensive action taken by CRM Learning in addressing the concerns expressed by members of the Filipino Community in con-nection with their customer service video,”

said Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr.The CRM Learning video, entitled

“It’s a Dog’s World,” showed two Filipina healthcare employees gossiping in Tagalog in front of an American patient. A Filipina nurse who took offense after seeing the video during a hospital training workshop reported it to Filipino Community lead-er Victoria Navarro who in turn brought it to the attention of Ambassador Cuisia.

“While we understand that it was intended as a parody, we felt that it was unfair to single out and depict Filipinos as insensitive and disrespectful employees who do not care at all about good customer service,” said Navarro, Co-Director of the Philippine Humanitarian Coalition and the immediate past president of PNAA, who ac-tively engaged CRM Learning on this issue.

MANILA, Aug 1 (Mabuhay) – Neophyte Senator Grace Poe has asked the Sen-ate to conduct a study on youth joblessness in the country, citing the government’s record of 1.4 million unemployed last April.

Poe filed Senate Resolution 771 directing the committees on youth and on labor to do the study “with the objectives of strengthening policies and introducing dynamic measures aimed at generating opportunities for young people and the unemployed.”

The resolution said based on the Philippines Statistical Authority’s (PSA) Labor Force Survey for April 2014, the number of unemployed Filipino youth reached 1.456 million.

“The same PSA study states that jobless youth account for half of the country’s total unemployed and for 16 percent of the total youth workforce,” it said.

“The youth unemployment rate of 15.4 percent is more than twice the reported national unemployment rate of 7 percent.”

MANILA, Aug 1 (Mabuhay) – Filipi-nos in Libya need not wait for their exit visas to leave the country, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Friday as the gov-ernment works double time to extricate the estimated 13,000 Filipinos out of the African nation currently in the midst of a bloody civil war.

In a statement, Baldoz said the Libyan Ministry of Labor has allowed Filipino workers there to leave even without exit visas from their employers.

“Labor Attaché to Tripoli Nasser Mus-tafa has reported to Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Administrator Hans Cacdac that exit visa is no longer a problem for our OFWs,” she said.

Baldoz added this means Filipino workers “who wish to avail of the manda-tory repatriation need not beg with their

employers to allow them to leave Libya.”The order was signed by an undersec-

retary of the Libyan Ministry of Labor and Retraining, allowing Filipinos in Libya to exit through the Republic of Tunisia, the nearest country to Libya.

The Philippines’ top diplomat, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Romulo, flew to Tunisia on Thursday night to personally oversee the country’s repatriation efforts.

Del Rosario’s deployment by President Benigno Aquino III highlights the worsen-ing bloodshed on Libya.

Manila has enforced mandatory evacu-ation of all its workers after putting Libya under crisis alert level 4 last month. Level 4 is the highest security warning given by the Philippines to countries that pose secu-rity risks to Filipino travelers and migrant workers due to armed conflict or disaster.

MHC Executive Director Arnedo Val-era said the video not only offended Filipinos but also went against existing guidelines on the “English Only Rule” in the workplace that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission struck down as language discrimination and violative of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“This advocacy and ensuing collabora-tive effort, respectful and direct communi-cation exchange make this process a good model to follow promoting respect and

celebration of diversity, the hallmark of America,” said Valera who is also PNAA Foundation legal counsel.

In his letter to Ambassador Cuisia, Na-varro and Valera, CRM Learning President Peter J. Jordan said his company is com-mitted to the principles of diversity and did not intend to create a scenario that is disre-spectful or stereotyped Filipino employees. He said health care training professionals reviewed and critique the training videos before it was released.

(a) states the requirement for a valid transmutation to occur which provides: “A transmutation of real or personal prop-erty is not valid unless made in writing by an express declaration that is made, joined in, consented to, or accepted by the spouse whose interest in the property is

adversely affected.” Our Supreme Court has interpreted “an express declaration” as language expressly stating that a change in the characterization or ownership of the property is being made. Estate of Mac-Donald, supra, 51 Cal.3d 262, 272, 272 Cal.Rptr. 153, 794 P.2d 911. “[A] writing

signed by the adversely affected spouse is not an ‘express declaration’ for the pur-poses of [Civil Code] section 5110.730(a) [now Family Code § 852, subd. (a)] unless it contains language which expressly states that the characterization or ownership of the property is being changed.” ( Ibid.)

An “express declaration” does not require use of the terms “transmutation,” “community property,” “separate prop-erty,” or a particular locution. Estate of MacDonald, supra, 51 Cal.3d 262, 273, 272 Cal.Rptr. 153, 794 P.2d 911. For example, the language “I give to the account holder any interest I have in the funds deposited in this account,” is sufficient to establish transmutation. ( Ibid.) The express declara-tion must unambiguously indicate a change in character or ownership of property. In re Marriage of Koester (1999) 73 Cal.App.4th 1032, 1037, fn. 5, 87 Cal.Rptr.2d 76.) A party does not “slip into a transmutation by accident.” ( Ibid.)

Does one spouse’s separate property be-come transmuted into community property by virtue of being funded into the revocable trust established during the marriage?

One has to examine the trust document itself. A general provision in the parties’ trust agreement establishing a revocable trust for estate planning purposes and stating that property transferred to the trust is community property, unless either spouse as transferor identifies it as separate property, is not itself effective to trans-mute separate property transferred to the trust to community property. Marriage of Starkman (2005) 129 CA4th 659, 661, 28 CR3d 639, 640 .

In addition Family Code § 852(a) writ-ing requirement in Starkman is not by a General Assignment (conveying all of the parties’ assets to the trust) or stock broker-age transfer forms transferring husband’s securities into the trust (but not describing them as separate or community).

However, a trust transfer agreement, even if executed only for estate planning purposes, effects a present transmutation when it includes language expressly stat-ing the characterization or ownership of the subject property is being changed. Marriage of Holtemann (2008) 166 CA4th 1166, 1172–1173, 83 CR3d 385, 390–391.

In Hotermann, the trust transfer agreement unambiguously stated assets listed in incor-porated exhibit are “hereby transmuted” from husbands separate property to com-munity property. Another example is in Marriage of Lund (2009) 174 CA4th 40, 51–54, 94 CR3d 84, 94–96 where the trust transfer documents unambiguously stated all of husband’s property was “hereby con-verted” to spouses’ community property and each had a “present, existing and equal interest therein”

The management and control of com-munity property held in a revocable trust is subject to Family Code § 761 and Family Code § 1100(a). The trustee may “convey and otherwise manage and control” the trust property without either spouse’s join-der or consent unless the trust instrument expressly provides otherwise. In addition, except where the trust instrument expressly provides otherwise, either spouse acting alone may exercise the power of revoca-tion. However, any power to modify rights and interests in the trust property during marriage may only be exercised with both spouses’ joinder or consent. Family Code § 761(a),(b) & (c)Marriage of Lund (2009) 174 CA4th 40, 54, 94 CR3d 84, 96.

For divorcing couples that have a re-vocable trust during their marriage, it is important to analyze the wording of the trust document to determine the proper characterization of the trust assets to be divided in the divorce case. It is therefore best to obtain the representation of an ex-perienced divorce lawyer.

Does the creation of a revocable living trust, during the marriage, transmute separate property to community property?

Divorcing couples may have established revocable living trust for estate planning pusposes during their marriage which was funded primarily with assets acquired by one spouse prior to the marriage. The issue is what is the characterization of those property when the couple gets the divorce.

Transmutation is the chang-ing of the characterization of a property from community to separate or vice versa. Family Code Section 852, subdivision

TRIPOLI, July 30, 2014 (AFP) – Un-known gunmen kidnapped and raped a Filipina nurse Wednesday in the Libyan capital, medics and security officials said.

The woman was seized early in the morning as she was on her way to work, said the health ministry spokesman, and was released several hours later after suf-fering an unspecified “aggression”.

But a source within the security services said she had been raped by her captors.

The ministry said the incident could push the Philippines to speed up the evacu-ation of its citizens, 3,000 of whom work in Libya as doctors and nurses, as the country sinks further into chaos.

The spokesman said that following

Wednesday’s incident, Filipino medical personnel had left hospitals in Tripoli to await evacuation.

On July 20, as the lawless North Af-rican country sank further into violence, the Philippines urged its estimated 13,000 citizens in Libya to leave and alerted them to prepare for a mass evacuation.

Several countries, including Portugal, the Netherlands, Canada and Bulgaria, evacuated citizens or closed their embas-sies in Tripoli earlier this week.

And France said Wednesday it had tem-porarily closed its embassy, and a French diplomat said 40 French nationals, includ-ing the ambassador, had been evacuated by sea along with seven Britons.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Susan Collins (R-ME) today introduced the Military SAFE Standards Act, legislation to help survivors of military sexual assault get the justice they deserve by requiring the Department of Defense to standardize eligibility, assignment, training and certification requirements for sexual assault forensic examiners across all services.

“Ensuring that survivors of military sexual assault have access to trained fo-rensic examiners is critical to bringing the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice,” Senator Boxer said.

“This bipartisan bill will expand access to these medical experts and improve training so that forensic examiners from every branch of the military meet the high-est standards.”

The Covered CA way is available to seniors who have legal presence for less than five (5) years and whose income is more than 138% of the Federal poverty level but still qualified for government subsidy towards their insurance premium.

The Off Exchange way is available to seniors who have been here for less than five (5) years and have Social Security or TIN number. This is the counterpart of Covered CA for seniors who are not quali-fied for government subsidy, or do not want government subsidy.

Medi-Cal, Mediaid in California, is health insurance program for people in-cluding seniors with very limited resourc-es. There are different kinds of Medi-Cal,

each offering different benefits. Recently, Medi-Cal is moving into Managed Care plans, whereas beneficiaries can only see providers within a limited network.

Lastly, Medicare is the most common way seniors get their health insurance. It is available to seniors who have legal pres-ence here for five (5) years or more. The 2 main parts of Medicare are Part A for inpatient services and Part B for medical services. Having only these 2 main parts are incomplete.

Information released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Ser-vices shows that more than 8.2 million seniors and people with disabilities with Medicare continue to enjoy prescription drug savings as a result of the Affordable Care Act, saving $11.5 billion since 2010.

This news comes on the heels of continued historic low levels of growth in Medicare spending. According to the recent Medicare Trustees report, the life of the Trust Fund has been extended to 2030, up from its projection of 2017 in 2009, and Part B premiums are expected to stay the same rather than increase for the sec-ond year in a row. Additionally, a new HHS report found that per capita, Medicare spending growth has averaged 2 percent over 2009 – 2012, and nearly 0 percent in 2013, one-third of the growth rate over the 2000-2008 period.

“Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, seniors and people with disabilities are sav-ing on needed medications,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. “By making prescription drugs more affordable, we are improving and promoting the best care for people with Medicare.”

The Affordable Care Act makes Medicare prescription drug coverage more af-fordable by gradually closing the gap in coverage where beneficiaries had to pay the full cost of their prescriptions out of pocket, before catastrophic coverage took effect. This gap is known as the donut hole.

Since the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, out-of-pocket savings on medica-tions for people with Medicare prescription drug coverage continues to grow. More than 8.2 million seniors and people with disabilities with Medicare have saved over $11.5 billion on prescription drugs since 2010 as a result of discounts in the donut hole and rebates in 2010, for an average of $1,407. These figures are higher than last year at this time when over 6.6 million seniors and people with disabilities with Medicare had saved over $7 billion on prescription drugs averaging $1,061 per beneficiary in donut hole discounts.

HEALTH & BEAUTYBy Rob Lever

WASHINGTON, July 27, 2014 (AFP) – Your smartphone is not only your best friend, it’s also become your personal trainer, coach, medical lab and maybe even your doctor.

“Digital health” has become a key focus for the technology industry, from modest startups’ focus on apps to the biggest com-panies in the sector seeking to find ways to

address key issues of health and wellness.Apps that measure heart rate, blood

pressure, glucose and other bodily func-tions are multiplying, while Google, Apple and Samsung have launched platforms that make it easier to integrate medical and health services.

“We’ve gotten to a point where with sensors either in the phone or wearables gather information that we couldn’t do in

Mobile tech reshaping the health sectorthe past without going to a medical center,” says Gerry Purdy, analyst at Compass Intelligence.

“You can do the heart rate, mobile EKGs (electrocardiograms). Costs are coming down, and these sensors are be-coming more socially acceptable.”

The consultancy Rock Health estimates 143 digital health companies raised $2.3 billion in the first six months of 2014, already topping last year’s amount.

An analysis by the global consultancy Deloitte suggests that smart glasses, fitness bands and watches, should sell about 10 million units in 2014, generating over $3 billion and that the number of devices will hit 170 million by 2017.

“Many health- and fitness-related tech-nologies have multiple applications and encourage wearers to be more engaged in their own fitness, help modify behavior by reminding wearers to exercise or take medication,” Deloitte’s Karen Taylor says in a July report.

Patients take controlThe California startup MD Revolu-

tion has created a system adapted from a concierge medicine practice, which allows participants to track a variety of health in-dicators using mobile or wearable devices.

The company uses fitness and other tracking devices to address “imminently preventable conditions such as diabetes or hypertension,” says spokeswoman Lisa

Peterson.“We are creating a new specialty in

digital health in which people can interact with nutritionists, exercise physiologists to receive a plan and coaching, to prevent or reverse chronic diseases,” she told AFP.

Peterson said the company using exist-ing commercial devices from makers such as Fitbit or Jawbone and plans to launch its own app for its users.

She noted that the launching of health platforms by Google and Apple “will make it easier for us to integrate more devices and apps.”

Recent studies suggest that people who use connected devices to monitor health and fitness often do a better job of manag-ing and preventing health problems.

A study led by the Center for Connected Health found that people who use mobile devices did a better job of lowering danger-ous blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

A separate study published in the July 2014 issue of Health Affairs found that data collected by devices is not only useful for patients but can help doctors find better treatments.

“When linked to the rest of the available electronic data, patient-generated health data completes the big data picture of real people’s needs, life beyond the health care system,” said Amy Abernethy, a Duke Uni-versity professor of medicine lead author of the study.

Even after having her own teleserye, Julia Barretto humbly said she is still striv-ing to build a name for herself in showbiz.

“I’m still in the process of still trying to make a name for myself. Siyempre I just don’t want to be Julia Barretto, the daughter of or the niece of. I want to be known as Julia Barretto as the actress, or be known for my craft or whatever I’m doing,” she said.

Julia, who is the daughter of Marjorie

and the niece of showbiz personalities Claudine and Gretchen, said she does not want to forever live in the shadows of her aunts and mom.

Asked how she plans to improve herself, Julia said: “Experience is the best teacher out there. I feel like everything that I go through every day will make me improve sa craft ko, sa pagkatao ko. It depends on you if you will choose to learn something out of every experience.”

Does Julia also get bothered whenever she gets compared to her aunts in terms of her physical looks?

“I’m always asked if may pressure to be beautiful and to look good all the time because I’ve got titas who are very beauti-ful, I must say. Pero I was never the type to be very pressured or to be very conscious na I have to be beautiful because they are beautiful,” she said.

“It definitely inspired me in a way na they are so beautiful, I want to be like them when I grow up. I want to be pretty too and be fabulous too like them,” she added.

Julia said hailing from a showbiz clan is something she values but stressed that she does not intend to stop establishing her own name.

Meanwhile, after her fantasy series “Mi-rabella,” Julia shared that she will again be working on another project although she cannot divulge its details yet.

“Definitely there’s something up next. Pero as of now, wala pa muna akong masa-sabi pero there’s something to look forward to,” she said. (MNS)

Mylene said she is in good terms with the father of her kids, adding that they often communicate to each other to discuss mat-ters regarding their children.

The 29-year-old actress said that they needed to maintain a good relationship since that would benefit their two children Tomas and Lucas.

“My anak kami, kailangan naming magkaibigan, kailangan namin mag agree and mag disagree on certain things because we are trying to raise children,” she said.

Mylene started her career in the coun-try’s leading network ABS-CBN as a member of Star Magic in 1996. She also appears in several series and the most recent is the hit but now defunct fantasy series “Mira Bella”.

Jason Webb began his basketball career in 1997 playing for Sta. Lucia. He is now the head coach of San Mig Super Coffee Mixers, who won the 2014 Governors’ cup.

Faulty pool lighting and bad wiring are the greatest electrical threats to safety, but can easily be eliminated by regular inspec-tion, maintenance and adherence to local and national codes. Don’t swim with shocksIt’s a nice play on words in a Consumer Product Safety Commission fact sheet, but there’s nothing nice about the hidden dangers it warns of in and around swim-ming pools with the summer in full swing. The spring electrocution of a 7-year-old boy in his family’s Miami swimming pool is a tragic worst-case example, but another non-fatal Miami accident where three children were badly shocked is in-structive as well.

Faulty pool lighting and bad wiring, respectively, are suspected in both acci-dents. In fact, underwater lights and their wiring are the greatest potential electrical hazards inside a pool since it can’t be said enough that water and electricity don’t mix. A pane of glass and a rubber seal are often swimmers’ only protection from electrical wiring.

Any water inside the underwater light fixture – the presence of mold or rust, buzzing noises or flickering lights is a tip-off – is very dangerous, but so is a power system that is not well-grounded and aging or corroded wires. These risks are only heightened if lighting and circuits aren’t protected by Ground Fault Circuit Inter-rupters (GFCIs). And older pools may not only have degraded lighting fixtures, but also may not have GFCIs on underwater lighting circuits. If these issues exist, they should be updated immediately.

“People should have a qualified elec-trician inspect their underwater lights to make sure that junction boxes and wir-ing connections are properly and safely installed,” said Don Neal, director of Cor-porate Environmental, Health and Safety at Southern California Edison (SCE), which also offers a pool-pump rebate program to assist customers. “In addition to fixing any problems, that electrician should upgrade your pool, as well as your hot tub or spa, in accordance with local codes and the Na-tional Electrical Code.”

GFCIs should also be used on pumps and electrical equipment, such as heaters, used with pools, spas and hot tubs and on all outlets within 20 feet of the water’s edge to protect people from shocks.

These are all very important steps be-cause there have been 60 electrocutions and nearly 50 serious electrical shocks in and around swimming pools in the U.S. since 1990, according to the safety commission. The commission said some

of the deaths and shocks occurred during attempted rescues of shock victims because the rescuers were unaware of the electrical hazards.

Another safe move is to have an electri-cian downgrade pool lighting from a po-tentially deadly 120 volts to 12 volts. The 120-volt lighting systems are particularly prevalent in older pools and GFCIs are recommended on any lighting system 15 volts or greater.

“The lower voltage is simply less dan-gerous,” said Neal “In case of a broken glass or leakage into an underwater light, you should avoid having 120 volts intro-duced into your water. Landscape lighting should also be powered by a low-voltage system to prevent shocks on a rain-soaked lawn.”

A well-ground power system is also very important since it adds critical pro-tection by guaranteeing that if something goes wrong, the power flows to the ground and not to those in the pool. “Pool owners should also make sure that electrical wires and junction boxes are a minimum of five feet away from water, as also required by the National Electrical Code,” said Neal.

As for other hazards outside the water, a permanent or storable pool should never be built or set up underneath power lines (if this exists, there are clearance requirements, but pool owners should consult their local inspection agency). Long-handled cleaning tools also should be used away from power lines and electrical cords should be kept at least five feet away from the pool.

Neal offers an additional warning on the electrical cords, suggesting that, “When possible, people should use battery-oper-ated appliances and not cord-connected ones in and around a pool, spa or hot tub.”

Meanwhile, pool owners should always have an emergency plan within view of pool users and power switches should be labeled for pool, hot tub and spa equip-ment and lighting so they can be turned off quickly during an electrical emergency. In addition, a fiberglass Shepherd’s crook should be used to remove any victims from the water, CPR should be administered and 911 should be called.

As for rescuers not taking these precau-tions, they risk serious injury if they touch a conductive fixture or enter the water before the current is stopped.

“Pool electrical accidents are easily prevented,” said Neal. “But pool owners must follow state-mandated codes, conduct proper inspection and maintenance and use qualified electricians to achieve that prevention.”

By Martin AbbugaoSINGAPORE, July 30, 2014 (AFP)

– Faced with snaking queues at immigra-tion, overflowing baggage carousels and expensive flight delays, Asian nations are rushing to build hundreds of new airports to cope with surging demand for air travel in the region.

From China and India to the Philippines and Indonesia, the fast-growing middle classes are looking to spend their cash by spreading their wings, leading to a boom in the Asia-Pacific region’s tourism sector.

Airlines have responded by setting up several new budget carriers and flying new routes – but many airports are unable to

cope, forcing governments to either expand or simply build new airports.

“Through the next 10 years, we see more than 350 new airports in the Asia-Pacific and the investment cost will be well over $100 billion,” said Chris De Lavigne, a global vice president at business consultancy Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific.

“China is building over 100 airports, India is building over 60 airports and In-donesia will also have to follow suit with investments in its infrastructure,” said De Lavigne, who closely tracks Asia’s avia-tion industry.

Upgrades of existing airports could cost an additional $25 billion, he told AFP by

telephone from his office in Jakarta.International tourist arrivals in Asia-

Pacific grew an annual 6.0 percent to 248 million last year, the strongest of any region worldwide, according to the UN World Tourism Organization.

To cope with this, construction is being ramped up.

The Canada-based Airports Council International (ACI) said in a report that Indonesia plans to build 62 new airports in the next five years, in addition to its existing 237.

Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta is improving capacity after handling 60 million passen-gers last year, nearly three times what it was designed for, ACI said.

And Kuala Lumpur aims to double ca-pacity to 100 million a year by 2020, while Hong Kong wants to handle 97 million an-nually by 2030, up from 60 million in 2013.

In Beijing – which already has a hub servicing 80 million people – a second, $11 billion airport is being built to open in 2018 and handle 40 million passengers, Sydney-based consultancy Centre for Aviation said.

There are also plans for a full replace-ment of Manila’s Ninoy Aquino Interna-tional Airport, one of Asia’s most notorious for overcrowding and backward facilities.

Its Terminal 1, which is undergoing a major makeover, was built in 1981 to handle six million passengers a year.

Together with two extension terminals, the airport handled around 30 million pas-sengers in 2013.

‘Bursting at the seams’ -Even Singapore’s Changi – regarded

by many as one of the world’s best – is expanding, with a $1.0 billion Terminal 4 opening in 2017 that will raise capacity to 82 million passengers from the current 54 million. Plans are already being made for a Terminal 5.

Shukor Yusof, an analyst with Malay-sia-based Endau Analytics, said airport infrastructure in many countries has lagged well behind travel growth.

“Many governments have paid scant attention to developing new terminals and new tarmacs, that’s why you find that many

of the airports are bursting at the seams,” he told AFP.

The focus is not just on capitals. The need for more space means much of the new construction is taking place in second-ary cities, with some facilities potentially becoming hubs.

De Lavigne cited the Kualanamu In-ternational Airport in Indonesia’s Medan, which opened last July and could become a hub for flights to Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, India and China.

It was designed to handle eight million passengers a year but is already at capac-ity, he said.

“By 2025, they’re forecasting 24 million passengers out of Medan, or a three-fold increase in just over 10 years,” De Lavigne said, adding that Indonesia’s aviation sector alone is growing 14-15 percent a year.

Even less developed tourist destinations are pressing ahead with building.

Myanmar—returning to the global fold after decades of junta-led isolation—is looking to upgrade 39 airports as tourist and domestic air passenger figures are seen surging to 30 million in 2030 from 4.2 million in 2013, the ACI said.

The government is also building a new $1.5 billion Hanthawaddy International Airport to serve as Yangon’s second air-port, it added.

Bangladesh is constructing a new air-port costing up to $7.2 billion about 60 ki-lometers (37 miles) from Dhaka, ACI said.

Funding from governments and the pri-vate sector does not appear to be a problem.

“There’s a lot of liquidity out there. There’s a lot of money in project financ-ing,” Shukor said.

Airports are now even targeting non-travelers, with the current trend for “aeroparks and aerotropolises” integrating lifestyle amenities, attracting diners and shoppers who won’t even board flights.

“You get people who don’t fly to come into the airports for food, shopping and other lifestyle activities. That trend which started in the West is increasingly finding its way into Asia,” De Lavigne said.

Asia tourist boom fuels airport binge

Cebu Pacific and Tigerair, the two larg-est low-cost carriers in the Philippines and Singapore respectively, have made further progress on their interline agreement with the first interline flights available on Cebu Pacific’s website from 23 July 2014. Tig-erair flights will be available on Cebu Pa-cific’s website from September 2014. With the interline agreement facilitating both domestic and international collaboration between both airlines, Cebu Pacific and Ti-gerair have created the biggest network of flights from the Philippines to the region.

The interline agreement is part of a wide-ranging strategic alliance entered into between the two carriers earlier this year and will enable both airlines to lever-age their respective strengths to enhance their network coverage and jointly market interline routes. Travelers can enjoy seam-less connections between the two airlines, with easy one-stop ticketing for connecting flights and baggage check-in. The ability to cross-book flights on a single itinerary will pave the way for greater connectivity between the two carriers, allowing cus-tomers to connect seamlessly within Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

Specifically, Tigerair’s customers will be able to fly from South East Asia to 34 Philippine cities, Korea and Japan on

Cebu Pacific’s network, and Cebu Pa-cific’s customers in the Philippines will be able to add Tigerair’s destination calls in Australia (via Perth), India and China to their flight itineraries. Customers on such extended itineraries will be able to connect through Singapore Changi Airport and Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines.

Chief Operating Officer of Tigerair, Mr. Ho Yuen Sang said, “The interline arrangement harnesses the strengths and networks of Tigerair and Cebu Pacific. We look forward to offering greater con-venience to customers with the increased flight frequencies, enlarged network and more seamless options for both business and leisure travel.”

President and CEO of Cebu Pacific Air, Mr. Lance Gokongwei said, “Together with Tigerair, we are proud to offer the largest, most extensive low cost network to and from the Philippines. Tigerair’s network reinforces Cebu Pacific’s strong presence in Asia, and expands our network with new destinations in Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malay-sia, Myanmar, Maldives and Thailand. We look forward to offering our trademark low fares and fun flights to both Cebu Pacific and Tigerair customers.”

WASHINGTON, July 29, 2014 (AFP) – Just 108 of the thousands of unaccom-panied minors illegally crossing the US border have been granted asylum in 2014, in a process that often takes more than a year, Congress heard Tuesday.

Many more children who entered the country are likely to be provided asylum status later this year, and experts say there are several other avenues through which minors can seek to stay in the country.

But the process, especially for asy-lum-seekers, is cumbersome and slow, contributing to what President Barack Obama labelled a humanitarian crisis on the southwest border.

Since October more than 57,000 unaccompanied minors have been ap-prehended crossing the border, and about three-quarters of them are from El Salva-dor, Guatemala and Honduras, Central American countries where youths are fleeing poverty and gang violence.

More than 1,500 child migrants who arrived in the United States without pa-pers or parents applied for asylum in fis-cal year 2014, according to US Customs and Immigration Services director Leon Rodriguez.

But with immigrants usually making their formal asylum requests more than 10 months after first being apprehended, most of those applicants arrived the pre-vious year.

“Of the 167 unaccompanied children asylum cases adjudicated on the merits in FY14 through the third quarter, 108 have been granted asylum status,” Rodriguez told a House panel.

But in a sign of how the process is

mired in legal hurdles and delays, only two of those minors granted asylum were apprehended this year, he said.

“For those who do apply, the delays in the process are very significant,” Anwen Hughes, a senior counsel at Human Rights First told AFP.

“It is taking over a year for asylum ap-plicants to get an initial hearing before the immigration court in some jurisdictions.”

Hughes also said that nearly half the child migrants are not represented by a lawyer when they appear in immigration court for the first time.

Obama is seeking $3.7 billion in emergency funding aimed at boosting the number of immigration judges, improving care for detained minors and deterring illegal immigration.

Congress is likely to trim his request dramatically.

Senate Democrats have introduced a $2.7 billion package, but House Repub-licans on Tuesday unveiled funding pared down to just $659 million.

The House plan would tweak a 2008 law targeting child trafficking that ex-panded legal rights for Central American child migrants, essentially revoking some of those rights to allow for speedier de-portations.

The Senate bill would not change the 2008 law, which many Republicans blame for fueling the immigration wave.

House Speaker John Boehner said he hopes to pass legislation this week, before lawmakers leave town on a five-week recess, but that would require significant compromise between the two chambers before Friday.

MEXICO CITY, July 28, 2014 (AFP) – Mexico’s foreign minister and the visiting governor of California questioned Monday plans by Texas to deploy troops to stem the flow of immigrant children, saying they need humanitarian aid instead.

As this developed, in a last-ditch effort to schedule a vote dealing with a influx of undocumented Central American chil-dren, the US House of Representatives postponed its summer recess Thursday (July 31).

The move came after the Republican-controlled chamber scrapped a vote earlier in the day on a bill to provide $659 million in emergency aid for the humanitarian crisis at the border.

“We’ll stay until we vote,” said Repub-lican Congressman Darrell Issa.

US officials have said that almost 57,000 unaccompanied children have arrived this year from Central America, fleeing poverty and violence at home, and hoping in many instances to reunite with relatives already in the United States.

The huge exodus, mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, has overwhelmed US authorities lacking the financial and legal means to curb the il-legal influx.

The five-week recess that would have begun on Thursday night was pushed back to accommodate a Friday morning meeting

to try to reschedule the vote.Separately in the Senate late Thursday,

Republicans blocked a Democratic border plan in a procedural vote.

US border officials have warned that they will run out of money to deal with the humanitarian crisis without a fresh infusion of funds to house and care for the young migrants, and to pay for the immigration hearings to resolve their status.

The amount of funding in the House bill is just a fraction of the $3.7 billion requested by President Barack Obama to increase border security and hire additional immigration court judges.

California Governor Jerry Brown, on a visit focused on boosting trade with Cali-fornia’s southern neighbor, said the Texas plan must be a short-term measure and that he hopes “wiser minds will prevail over the next several months.”

The Democratic politician was referring to a plan announced last week by Texas Governor Rick Perry, a Republican seen as a potential 2016 presidential election candidate, to send 1,000 National Guard reservists to the enormous and porous border US-Mexico border.

More than 57,000 children, mostly from Central America, have entered the United States illegally and without adult supervi-sion since October, many fleeing unrelent-ing gang violence in their home countries.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 29, 2014 (AFP) – Startup Eaze on Tuesday released a smartphone application promising prompt, professional delivery of medical marijuana the doors of patients in San Francisco.

Eaze said that drivers referred to as “caregivers” will get medicinal doses to their intended recipients in an average of 10 minutes in most cases.

Eaze checks the medical eligibility of those who register at eazeup.com for the “on-demand healthcare delivery service” where users place orders using smart-phones or tablet computers.

Once an order is placed, Eaze dis-patches a caregiver to hand deliver the marijuana from a selected dispensary. Those waiting for their cannabis can track progress of the driver in real time using mobile devices, according to Eaze.

Eaze has automated the typically “slow, cumbersome, and unpredictable” process of checking dispensaries and confirming eligibility, according to startup founder and chief executive Keith McCarty.

Delivery is free for patients, with money to pay drivers reportedly coming

from revenue that Eaze takes in from dis-pensaries for generating business.

Prior to Eaze, McCarty was part of so-cial networking technology firm Yammer which Microsoft bought two years ago in a deal valued at $1.2 billion. He backed Eaze with some of his Yammer windfall.

Eaze said that it is eager to expand to Southern California as well as the US stats of Colorado and Washington. A long-term vision includes operating everywhere in the country where medical marijuana is legal.

Medical marijuana delivery is already available in California and other US states, with an extensive list of dispensaries and services online at weedmaps.com.

Eaze hoped to put itself on a higher plain by being fast, reliable and profes-sional.

“Although the healing effects of mari-juana have been researched and docu-mented, the medicine is still subject to much controversy,” McCarty said.

“At Eaze, we developed technology to make it easier and quicker for patients to receive their medicine through profes-sional delivery experiences.”

By Alistair WatsonGLASGOW, July 31, 2014 (AFP) – The

International Boxing Association says it will carry out a detailed study of the im-pact of scrapping headguards for amateur contests following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games.

It follows a call from Australian boxer Daniel Lewis for the immediate return of the safety gear after a failed medical check ruled him out of his welterweight quarter-final on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old suffered a badly cut eye in his win against Nigeria’s Kehinde Ademuyiwa on Monday.

The wound failed to sufficiently heal in time for him to meet Mandeep Jangra of India, who was given a walkover into the semi-finals.

A growing number of cut head injuries have resulted from male boxers stepping into the ring without head protection after AIBA changed their rules last year.

AIBA vice-president Dr Abdellah Bes-salem from Algeria said his organisation was aware of the concerns and would ad-dress them after the Games.

“We are looking at the number of cuts and after our study we will prepare our report,” the Commonwealth Games tourna-ment supervisor said.

“But we have to remember that without headguards the number of concussion in-juries suffered by boxers has gone down.”

Following his withdrawal on Wednes-day morning Lewis immediately took to social media to vent his frustration at having his medal hopes brought to an abrupt halt.

He wrote: “For all these people debat-ing about headgear for amateurs, bring the headgear back 100 per cent.

“My journey is over. Got up at 6am this morning to lose weight. I made it and was ready to go to war only to be told by the doctor my journey is over. They won’t let me fight with the cut.

“I had two fights, two comfortable wins with one TKO and a stupid elbow ruins it all.

“My mum and dad paid to fly to the other side of the world to watch me win gold.

“The past 10 weeks I’ve been away from everyone putting in the hard work, all for an elbow to ruin my dream.”

This is the second injury setback to have ended Lewis’ hopes of boxing glory. Two years ago he broke his jaw in the Australian boxing team trials for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Australia media manager Ian Hanson said: “Daniel is bitterly disappointed. He came here to win a gold medal and, on top of his ill-fated Olympic preparations, this is a further blow to him. But he is a strong character and we are sure he’ll be back to fight another day.”

CGames: Boxing chiefs to probe headguard scrapping

By Veronique DupontLOS ANGELES, July 29, 2014 (AFP) -

A US judge on Monday gave the go-ahead for the $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft chief execu-tive Steve Ballmer, ruling that embattled owner Donald Sterling could not block the move.

The ruling by California Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas came after a three-week trial pitting the 80-year-old Sterling – barred from the National Basketball As-sociation for life for making racist remarks – against his estranged wife Shelly, who made the deal with Ballmer.

Levanas said the sale could go forward immediately, even if Donald Sterling – who had challenged his wife’s authority to sell the NBA franchise – appeals. He had 15 days to file an objection to the ruling.

Shelly Sterling negotiated the sale on behalf of the family trust, after Donald Sterling’s position as co-trustee was termi-nated when two medical experts declared the billionaire real estate mogul mentally incompetent to handle trust affairs.

“This is a good thing for the city, for the league and for my family,” she told reporters, adding she thought her husband would eventually be “happy” with the sale.

Levanas rejected claims by Donald Sterling that his wife’s efforts to have him declared incompetent were based on fraud, saying the court “did not find any compelling evidence” of any wrongdoing and that Shelly Sterling’s testimony had been convincing.

Donald Sterling’s attorney Max Blecher said after the ruling was read that he was “deeply disappointed.”

In April, recordings of Sterling making racist comments to a girlfriend led NBA commissioner Adam Silver to ban him for life from the sport and launch proceedings to strip him of the team.

Neurologist Meril Platzer told the court earlier this month that Donald Sterling was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and likely had been for at least three years.

Sterling had argued that his decision in

June to dissolve the family trust – which came after he initially agreed to the team’s sale – kept his wife from making any move to sell the Clippers. Levanas rejected that claim.

Sale deadline approaching -An August 15 deadline to complete the

sale to Ballmer is fast approaching. In a statement, NBA executive vice

president of communications Mike Bass welcomed the ruling.

“We are pleased that the court has af-firmed Shelly Sterling’s right to sell the Los Angeles Clippers to Steve Ballmer. We look forward to the transaction closing as soon as possible,” Bass said.

The sale would bring an end to an ugly chapter in NBA history – one that included player and fan protests. Sponsors abandoned the team, and the controversy clouded the Clippers’ run to the second round of the NBA playoffs.

The $2 billion price tag, for a team that has never won a championship, would set an NBA record – well above the record $550 million paid for the Milwaukee Bucks in April.

It also would mark a massive financial return for Sterling on a club he purchased in 1981 for just $12 million.

Monday’s ruling may, however, be com-plicated by a separate suit filed by Donald Sterling against his wife, the NBA and Silver, claiming they defrauded him when they moved to sell the Clippers to Ballmer.

He is seeking an injunction to halt the sale of the team, as well as unspecified damages.

Pierce O’Donnell, the lead attorney for Shelly Sterling, said in his closing argu-ments earlier Monday that Shelly Sterling “cared about her husband” and was a “decent woman.”

Blecher, however, denounced a “scheme” against his client, and said there was no proof that Sterling was no longer capable of making business decisions.

“It was clear in the process of his tes-timony that he was alert,” he said, adding that Shelly Sterling had “unclean hands.”

SAN ANTONIO, July 29, 2014 (AFP) – The Oakland Raiders, whose stadium lease expires next year, are reportedly looking at San Antonio as a possible new home should the National Football League team decide to relocate.

The San Antonio Express-News, cit-ing unnamed sources, said Raiders owner Mark Davis and two others with the team met with key people in the Texas city, including former mayor Julian Castro and city manager Sheryl Sculley.

The Raiders would play in the Alamo-dome, which opened in 1993 and seats 65,000 for American football.

Also reportedly in the talks was former US Secretary of Housing and Urban De-velopment Henry Cisneros, who was San Antonio’s mayor from 1981-1989 and led the push to construct the Alamodome.

Davis said he would ask the city to build a new stadium once the Raiders prove themselves.

The Raiders have not had a winning season since 2002, which ended with Oakland losing the 2003 Super Bowl to Tampa Bay. Any relocation would have

to be approved by 75 percent of the NFL’s 32 club owners.

The Raiders are the only NFL team that shares a home stadium with a Major League Baseball club. The Oakland A’s, who were also looking at potential new stadium sites in the area, signed a 10-year lease to remain in the stadium earlier this month.

A move to Texas would not be the first for the franchise, which played in Oak-land from 1960 to 1981, relocated to Los Angeles from 1982 to 1994 and then went back to Oakland for the 1995 campaign.

San Antonio has been in consideration as the home of an NFL club before, most notably in 2005 when New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson spoke with city of-ficials about hosting the team after the Superdome, their home stadium, was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The Saints played three games in the Alamo dome but returned to Louisiana the next year.

The Raiders have won three Super Bowl titles, claiming the crown in 1976, 1980 and 1983.

JOHANNESBURG, August 1, 2014 (AFP) – South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has sold his Pretoria home where he killed his girlfriend last year for less than he hoped, to help pay legal fees for his ongoing murder trial, the real estate agent said on Friday.

The athlete had hoped to raise at least five million rand ($470,000, 350,000 euros) when he put the small villa in a gated community on the market in March, said estate agent Ansie Louw, who is the wife of Pistorius’s coach.

The buyer ended up paying 4.5 million rand ($420,000, 310,000 euros) – sig-nificantly less than the price paid for similar properties in the same neighbourhood.

“This is a fact, but I am not going to comment any further,” Louw told AFP.Pistorius shot and killed his 29-year-old girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the house

on February 14, 2013, claiming he mistook her for an intruder. His trial on charges of premeditated murder began in March this year and is expected to wrap up next week with closing arguments. Pistorius has not lived in the villa since the killing.

The buyer of the house, Louwtjie Louwrens, told The Times newspaper that he bought the property because “it is in a safe area”.

(LONDON-AFP) – Driverless cars will be allowed on British roads from January 2015 as part of a pilot initiative in three cities, the government announced Wednesday.

Cities nationwide are being invited to bid to host one of a series of trials that will last between 18 and 36 months, and to receive a share of the £10 million ($17 million, 12.5 million euros) of government funding for the scheme.

Driverless vehicles, guided by a system of sensors and cameras, have already been tested in several countries, including the United States and Japan, with Sweden set to follow. wBusiness Secretary Vince Cable, outlining the plans, said British scientists and engineers were “pio-neers” in the development of driverless vehicles.

“Today’s announcement will see driverless cars take

to our streets in less than six months, putting us at the forefront of this transformational technology and open-ing up new opportunities for our economy and society,” he said at the headquarters of motor industry research organization MIRA in Nuneaton, central England.

However motoring organizations warned that road users were skeptical of the technology.

The Automobile Association said a recent survey of more than 23,000 of its members showed that 43 percent did not agree that the law should be changed to allow trials of the technology.

AA president Edmund King said drivers were “still resistant to change” and that many people “enjoy driving too much to ever want the vehicle to take over from them”.

Cypress, Calif., July 30 – Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) announces its affordably-priced and fun-to-drive 2014 Lancer compact sports sedan (ex-cludes Ralliart and Evolution models) has been named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

In its latest evaluation, the IIHS subjected a total of twelve “small cars” to their small overlap front crash test that has 25 percent of the vehicle’s frontal area on the driver”s side impact a barrier at 40 mph. Introduced in 2012, the small overlap front crash test “replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole,” according to the IIHS. Half of the vehicles evaluated achieved non-passing grades of “marginal” or “poor”; the IIHS requires that a vehicle earn a grade of “good” or “acceptable” to pass the test.

According to the IIHS, their small overlap front crash test is “more difficult than either the head-on crashes conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration (NHTSA) or the longstanding IIHS moderate overlap test.”

“It is great to see our very popular Mitsubishi Lancer once again named as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,” said Don Swearingen, Execu-tive Vice President of MMNA. “Lancer is a versatile com-pact sports sedan that has an exceptional degree of safety, excellent fuel economy, sporty performance and plentiful standard features all at price to fit almost any budget.”

The “Top Safety Pick” designation by the Insurance

Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – a U.S.-based non-profit agency that performs research and crash test evaluations of production vehicle models marketed in America – is also applicable to the new 2015 model year Mitsubishi Lancer making its way to Mitsubishi Motors dealerships across the country this summer.

The new 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer includes a host of welcome new standard and available features and tech-nologies for the new model year including heated side view mirrors with turn indicators (standard on all models); an advanced next-generation continuously-variable trans-mission (CVT) that mimics the operation of a precision 7-speed transmission (standard on SE AWC model and available on other versions); and expanded new stan-dard features including redesigned 16-in. two-tone alloy wheels, FUSE Hands-Free Link System® with USB port, high contrast meters with color multi-information display, chrome interior door handles, soft-touch upper door trim, 6 speaker audio system, fog lights, and Sport front fascia

with color-keyed center bumper (SE AWC model). New available content packages for the 2015 Lancer include a feature-rich Value Package (ES model) and Sun and Sound Package (GT model).

If you want to know why the Mitsubishi is up in its sales and why the Outlander is America’s top Mitsubishi vehicle for the past several months or why Evolution is the choice of many who are looking for speed, call Richard Samaco or John Rodis, the dealership’s Filipino salespersons at Glendale Mitsubishi at (888) 465-7218.

LOS ANGELES (July 23, 2014) – There are many attractive reasons for Angelenos to own the all-electric Nissan LEAF: single-occupant access to high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes; an available Califor-nia state tax rebate of $2,500; much lower operating costs than a gas-powered car and now, free public charging.

Nissan has announced that it is adding Los Angeles to its “No Charge to Charge” promotion, a program that will offer two years of no-cost public charging at hun-dreds of stations with the purchase or lease of a new Nissan LEAF in the Los Angeles area. This includes no-cost access to fast chargers that can charge a LEAF battery pack from zero to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes.

“Los Angeles has long been one of the world’s top markets for electric car sales,” said Brendan Jones, director, Nissan Electric Vehicle Sales and Infrastructure. “Adding free access to public fast charging in the LA market gives us a competitive edge over other vehicles, regardless of their fuel source.”

Nissan offers free charging for new leaf buyers in Los Angeles

“No Charge to Charge” takes advantage of the new EZ-ChargeSM card, a first-of-its-kind card that offers Nissan LEAF owners access to five leading EV charging networks with a single card. New owners will receive an EZ-Charge card that will provide access to chargers with Charge-Point, Blink, CarCharging, AeroVironment and NRG eVgo. (Note: not all chargers available with the EZ-Charge card are part of “No Charge to Charge.”)

Nissan now offers “No Charge to

Charge” in 11 of the top markets for Nis-san LEAF sales, including San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, Nashville, Phoenix, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston and Washington, D.C. In the next year, Nissan plans to offer the “No Charge to Charge” program and EZ-Charge card at LEAF dealers in at least 14 additional U.S. markets.

“No Charge to Charge” will launch at Nissan LEAF dealers in the Los Angeles market on August 15, 2014. LEAF owners

who purchased or leased their vehicle on or after July 1, 2014, in the Los Angeles market will receive entry into the “No Charge to Charge” program retroactively.

For more information on the “No Charge to Charge” promotion and EZ-Charge, visit www.EZ-Charge.com/FAQ.

About Nissan LEAFWith about 125,000 global sales since

launch, Nissan LEAF is the world’s top-selling electric vehicle. LEAF seats up to five passengers and boasts an estimated driving range on a fully-charged battery of 84 miles and MPGe ratings of 126 city, 101 highway and 114 combined. The ef-fective price of a Nissan LEAF starts at about $20,000 after the available $7,500 federal tax credit and $2,500 California state rebate, which is competitive with similar gas-powered cars while providing the benefits of lower running costs and less scheduled maintenance.

LEAF is powered by an advanced lithium-ion battery and an 80kW motor that provides a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience.

“No Charge to Charge” will launch at Nissan LEAF dealers in Los Angeles on August 15, 2014. LEAF owners who purchased or leased their vehicle on or after July 1, 2014 will receive entry into the “No Charge to Charge” program retroactively.

Redesigned 2015 Toyota Yaris: Sharper styling, more comfort and value priced

TORRANCE, Calif., July 23, 2014 – A bold new look with a distinct European flavor. A new, quieter interior crafted from improved materials. And a new attitude. The redesigned 2015 Toyota Yaris checks all of the boxes for small-car shoppers. And then it adds and checks two more boxes for fun and value. In 3-door or 5-door liftback models, the 2015 Yaris makes every day driving less every day.

The 2015 Yaris, like the previous-generations, comes in 3-door and 5-door liftback configurations, but the style is all-new. The new Yaris combines an energetic shape with a more comfortable cabin. The 2015 Yaris receives an aggressive new look with a horizontal chrome grill treatment that appears to continue right in to the headlamp. A larger, bolder grille opening gives this fun-to-drive car just the right touch of “attitude” in its look.

Newness permeates the Yaris cabin. Sitting in premium seats, the Yaris driver faces a sporty new dashboard design and touches new, softer materials throughout.

Retuned suspension, a more rigid body structure, additional sound insulation and attention to aerodynamic details all help to give the 2015 Yaris a smooth, dynamic and quieter ride.

With safety always at the forefront, the Yaris continues to come equipped with nine standard SRS airbags, including cur-tain shield airbags and front seat cushion airbags.

Altogether, that’s a lot of new packed into an easy-driving small car with big fuel economy numbers and the brand’s penchant for high QDR (Quality, Depend-ability and Reliability).

The Value of FunFun, functionality and value come

together in the 2015 Yaris. The smooth-revving 1.5-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder DOHC engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) produces 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. The broad torque curve makes those numbers seem even bigger when you’re driving the Yaris, which offers snappy response with either transmission.

A smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission, made smoother by an im-proved hydraulic clutch, is standard. An available four-speed electronically con-trolled automatic transmission features a compact, lightweight design and low friction for high fuel efficiency.

So for a closer look at the all-new Toy-ota vehicles and their certified pre-owned, come and visit our friendly salespeople at Wondries Toyota in Alhambra where the Yaris and all other2012 Toyota vehicles of various models are now available and on sale right now.

And with Paul Luong and Quang Huynh assisting you, you can also take advan-tage of the great deals now happening at Wondries Toyota, not to mention the extra customer service Paul and Quang always provide to their Filipino customers.

For more information, please contact Paul at paull@ wondriestoyota.com or call him at 626.414.2525 or Quang at or qhuynh88@gmail or by phone at 626.524.0579. 2014 Kia Optima finishes second in Midsize Car segment; Kia’s combination of style, technology and value continues to win with customers

IRVINE, Calif., July 29, 2014 – Coming off its best-ever first-half sales performance in company his-tory, the fun and funky 2014 Soul has received the J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) award for the third straight year in the Com-pact Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment. All new for the 2014 model year, the Soul sold an individual nameplate record 74,999 units in the first half of 2014.

“Since launching in 2009, the Soul has earned a de-voted following thanks to its unique blend of attitude, style, technology and value,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Kia Motors America (KMA). “Now in its second iteration, the iconic Soul remains true to its roots while adding refinement both inside and out. Taking top honors in its

segment for the third year in a row in the J.D. Power APEAL study is further verification that the Soul just keeps getting better.”

The J.D. Power APEAL study measures new-vehicle owners’ overall satisfaction with their vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership. The results are divided into 10 categories and weighted accordingly: exterior, inte-rior, storage, audio, seats, heating and ventilation, driv-ing dynamics, powertrain, visibility, and fuel economy.

About the 2014 SoulInstantly recognizable yet thoroughly fresh, the 2014

Soul rides on a new chassis that is stiffer, longer and wider than its predecessor. The Soul’s new dimen-sions allow for more passenger and cargo room while NVH levels have been reduced dramatically. Increased torque and significant suspension upgrades make the 2014 Soul a nimble and agile companion in congested urban environments, and inside there is a long list of

standard comfort and convenience features includ-ing Bluetooth® wireless technology1 and steering wheel-mounted controls2.

But while Kia maybe the fastest selling vehicle brand in the U.S. – Car Pros Kia of Carson is selling more than 600 cars a month – Carson of Kia General Manager Juan Alarcon attributes hard work, a friendly staff and the excellent service that Car Pros Kia of Carson pro-vides as the reasons for the dealership’s rise to become a member of the nation’s elites.
