metal to that of Filipinos.“What most people do not know is that

gold is the most malleable of all metals. It easily bends to external forces without breaking or cracking. It changes form yet it is able to retain its natural properties. Viewed this way, gold can symbolize the essence of being Filipino. As individuals and as a nation, Filipinos are recognized for their resilience, for the ability to adapt and assimilate while preserving what is true about themselves,” said Minister Chuasoto.

During the lecture, Dr. Capistrano-Bak-er shared the history of Butuan in southern Philippines, a polity which rose to com-mercial prominence in the 10th century and declined in the 13th century. Butuan was home to various gold objects, primarily elite regalia believed to be part of a ruling family’s collective heirloom wealth.

Members of the audience marveled at the beautiful and intricate designs of the gold pieces, most of which were smaller

than a palm of a hand. According to Dr. Capistrano-Baker, the technically astound-ing works are indicative of excellent skills and craftsmanship present long before the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippines.

Dr. Capistrano-Baker’s talk was fol-lowed by questions from audience mem-bers eager to learn more about the gold items and their history.

The lecture was organized by the US-Philippines Society with the support of the Embassy.

Mr. Hank Hendrickson, Executive Di-rector of the US-Philippines Society said, “The program on pre-Hispanic Philippine gold showcased intricate designs, revealed complex social structures, and expansive trade ties throughout the Philippines from the 10th to 13th centuries, an era that has been largely lost in history until now. The US-Philippines Society is delighted to assist bringing more information on that period to American audiences and encour-ages people to visit the exhibit at the Asia Society Museum in New York.”

MANILA, Oct 15 (Mabuhay) – Thanks, but no thanks. That was how Senator Sergio Osmeña III reacted on Thursday when asked about

his possible inclusion in the senatorial ticket of Senators Grace Poe and Francis “Chiz” Escudero. Osmeña said no offer has been made yet for him to join Poe’s slate but said he would say no if he receives such offer.

when asked if he was open to run under Poe’s ticket.Even before Poe declared her presidential bid, Osmeña had already warned her

against teaming up with Escudero.Osmeña also gave a categorical “no” answer when asked if he was open to the

idea of running under the ticket of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who also declared her presidential bid in 2016.

“Duterte, yes. Miriam, no,” he said. Duterte is Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Dute-rte, who already announced that he would not join the presidential derby.

Asked again if he thinks Santiago was serious in seeking the presidency next year, Osmeña said: “As serious as someone sick in the body and sick in the head can be.”(MNS)

Client No. 1

can be garnished? If creditors can get your social security in-come when you retire, how can you have peace of mind when you retire? To be sure, not every kind of creditor can garnish your social security, because social security income is generally exempt from garnishment. So who can garnish your social security? The bad guy who doesn’t care if you live or die has been, is, and will always be the IRS. The IRS can garnish your social security for unpaid taxes. The IRS is the shark that will eat you alive. But the shark does have a heart and is capable of a little mercy. The IRS usually will not garnish more than 15% of your social security income! Still, receiving 15% less of social security can make or break your monthly retirement budget, especially if, all you rely on at retirement is social security and nothing else.

Client is 63 years old with a previous Chapter 7 discharge in 2008 when he wiped out $30K of credit cards. He took early retirement at 62 because he said that he was getting depressed with life. He has been receiving social security of $1,315. Recently, he received something that made him more depressed, a letter from the IRS saying that they were going to garnish a portion of his social security for unpaid

income taxes for 2009 of $10,000. It ap-pears that client liquidated all of his 401K of $85K in 2009 because his son needed a heart bypass surgery and had no medical insurance. Son lived in client’s country of origin where the cost of heart bypass

but nevertheless reached $60K.Here’s how the IRS problem arose. He

did not declare the liquidation of the 401K in his tax returns because he knew that if he disclosed it, his income would increase by $85K, resulting in higher income tax liabil-ity which he had no ability to pay. The non-disclosure gave him temporary relief but as Benjamin Franklin said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” So, eventually the IRS assessed her additional taxes. What he did not expect that the IRS would also assess her an “accuracy penalty” of 25% because she knew that she liquidated her 401K but did not disclose it. An “accuracy penalty” also makes that tax non-dischargeable be-cause it shows conduct or intent to evade taxes. Client cannot discharge this tax even in a Chapter 7.

-

nishment and pay the IRS without interest and penalty at $170 a month for 60 months. This is still a better deal than an installment payment plan or continued garnishment, both of which have interest and penalty.Client No. 2

Client is 45 years old. Husband aban-doned her 5 years ago and left her with $40K of credit card debt. Husband worked as hotel manager for a big hotel in Los Angeles. A woman lawyer represented the owner of the hotel. The lawyer conducted audits of the hotel operations. The lawyer would fly in from abroad and spend a long time with client’s husband discussing hotel business. They had meetings late at night. Apparently, the lady lawyer found client’s husband attractive. Being the hotel manager, he had access to the hotel rooms. One drink led to another, and soon enough, they were in the hotel room purportedly inspecting if the sheets were clean enough. You know the rest of the story.

Suspecting something was going on, client asked husband if he was having an affair with the lady lawyer that her husband had introduced to her in a business party. Husband replied, “ No way, she is so ugly! I wouldn’t touch her with a ten foot pole!” Eventually, husband decided to divorce client to marry the ugly lawyer who got husband promoted to regional manager for the hotel chain. Husband promised

to pay off the community property credit card debt of $40K. He made minimum payments for 3 months then stopped alto-gether. Client paid the minimum of $1,200 monthly to keep them current for 5 years. After paying $72K in 5 years, she found out that the principal owed was still $40K! She defaulted on the cards. Now she faces collection lawsuits for half of the cards.

relief. She should have done it 5 years ago and she would have saved herself $72K and would have very good credit again by now close to 700.

Article 143 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC) by allegedly ordering the city hall’s personnel to padlock the session hall in time for the maiden assembly of the city council or Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) in August 2010.

Article 143 of the RPC penalizes persons who, “by force or fraud, prevent or tend to prevent the meetings of local legislative bodies.”

The Ombudsman noted that because of Cayetano and Montales’ act, the SP was forced to hold its maiden assembly and its next 14 sessions in the city hall’s staircase as the smaller city auditorium cannot accommodate the number of SP members.

Morales junked respondents’ explanation that the move was part of the city’s reengineering and reorganizational plan, noting that the respondents failed to present any project plan nor a semblance of a project study “that would validate the necessity

ENTERTAINMENTIf only to disprove rumors that he is no

longer with Journey, singer Arnel Pineda is bent on bringing the band to the Philip-pines anew for a concert.

The last time the American band per-formed on local shores was in 2009.

“I just want everybody to know that I’m alive and kicking with the band…na hindi ako natanggal sa banda,” Pineda said.

He’s been with Journey for eight years now and has never stopped touring with them, he added.

In fact, they are planning to hold a world tour in the next two years. Well, un-less “mag-disband” though Arnel quickly added there are “no plans” for them to part ways anytime soon, if at all.

Still, the 48-year-old Pineda admitted he’s always been prepared for whatever the future holds, with or without the band. Even at this point, he’s already happy with the times he’s spent fronting for Journey.

“Actually, para sa akin, maka-one year lang ako sa kanila – malibot ko lang ang buong Amerika touring with them – ay okay na sa akin… kahit nga isa or dala-

wang shows na nakasama ko sila (okay na ’ko dun eh),” he recalled telling himself when he got the job.

At 500 shows with Journey and count-

ing, Arnel has exceeded the quota hand-somely.

“I’m still here. They still keep me and it’s such a blessing.”

Due to holding so many shows, Pineda revealed almost telling his wife, “Parang ayoko na ata ito, sobra na yata.” But he carried on.

Like many renowned musical acts on tour, Pineda hardly sees much of the countries they visit.

“Minsan nakakapunta ka sa maga-gandang lugar pero ang nakikita mo lang (’yung lugar ’pag) galing sa airport, na parang ‘Ay, ito pala ’yung Paris!’ Tapos wala na, parang nadaanan mo lang. Tapos ’pag gising mo, the next day mag-show ka, tapos alis ka na papunta sa next country, ganu’n,” he said.

Not that he is complaining. Arnel stressed he’s always been thankful and proud to be part of Journey.

“This is something na hindi mo tine-take for granted kasi napakalaking blessing nito sa pamilya ko,” Pineda said. “And many Filipinos are proud kung ano ’yung nagawa ko with the band.”

Journey is known for the songs “Open Arms,” “Faithfully,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’,” among others. (MNS)

“With all the blessings (I’ve been re-ceiving), I think it’s time to give glory to God, to do something that would glorify him,” she said.

Actually, Kuh has been doing concerts like this one here and abroad for some time now. “Pero on my 35th, mas maganda ’yan kasi sa isang simbahan gaganapin. It is

Kuh marks 35+ in local music scene much more appropriate to do an inspira-tional show this way and really give back glory to God,” she said.

The concert will celebrate Kuh’s life through music, “I’m going to tell my sto-ry – what happened to my life – through songs.” This means there will be lots of pop songs, too. After all, Kuh has a treasure-trove of OPM classics including “Till I Met You,” “One More Try,” “So It’s You,” “I Think I’m In Love,” and her sem-inal hit, “Dito Ba?” She will perform all in the show in original musical arrangement.

“May mga gospel songs (akong gagaw-in), kasi ang daming super gandang gospel songs. But, I also want to do my hits kasi it could also tell things about my life,” she explained.

Kuh praises God for giving her chances to mingle with and entertain fans.

“I can only say it’s really the hand of God that has sustained me all this time. It’s not my own doing, it’s really God’s blessing. It’s like He is using me as an instrument to give glory to His name and I could only be thankful (for that).”

inside the combustion chamber, while the coolant passages have been redesigned to optimize internal engine temperature. The friction created by the piston skirts, rotating parts and the oil pump has been reduced, while the use of low-viscosity oil reduces friction between sliding engine components.

Fuel efficiency is also boosted by improvements to heating performance. An active grille shutter has been added to open and close the grille as necessary in response to outside temperatures. The exhaust heat recirculation system has also been improved and made more compact. This recycles exhaust heat from the engine into the coolant to be reused in the heaters and to warm the engine.
