PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Week 3 - 15 February 2013 Sunshine Avenue Campus Tweed Heads South NSW 2486 PO Box 996 Banora Point NSW 2486 07 5523 1143 Sunshine Awards Congratulations to our Sunshine Award recipients for this fortnight. These children have been nominated by teachers for their positive, helpful and kind actions. Ethan Hill Kindergarten Ruby Hannam Kindergarten Tomislav Todorovic Year 1 Shayla Henderson Year 3 Heidi Chaffey Year 4 Bailey Gadd Year 4 Pick Up Car Name Signs Several families new to our school community have their child’s name displayed on their car dashboard when utilising the Sunshine Ave pick up process in the afternoons. Teachers on duty have found this extremely helpful in assisting with a constant flow of traffic. If you collect your child driving through the pick up area it would be greatly appreciated if you could print your child’s name and class onto A4 size paper or card using a large font (approximately a size 120 pt). eg: Designated Disabled Parking I urge parents to respect the designated disabled parking area. Only cars who display the appropriate parking permit are to use this space. Birthday Party Invitations K-4 It has been common practice in the past for parents to send their child’s birthday party invitations along to school for the classroom teacher to distribute to invitees. I am sure you can appreciate how complex and busy a teacher’s day is, and in an attempt to help alleviate their already hectic workload, they will no longer continue with this practise. Parents are welcome to use the Buzz Book to locate contact details for other families. Hats If your child waits to be collected from school in the pick up area or for a bus in the afternoon they need to be wearing a hat. Please assist staff in reminding your child to do so. Year 4 Camp Year 4 staff and students are busily preparing for their camp at Midginbill Hill next week. This experience is a great opportunity for students to increase their independence and to develop their teamwork skills. Be sure to read the next Primary newsletter which will be filled with news of their adventures! Peripatetic Music TeachersWe would like to take this opportunity to introduce the peripatetic music teachers who are offering their services to the students of Lindisfarne Grammar in 2013.Ben SinghBen Singh was educated on the Gold Coast and took to the violin at the age of 5. During his schooling years he enjoyed playing in orchestras, performing chamber music, getting nervous about his annual examination and competing in competitions. At University he graduated with 3 degrees gaining his Masters degree in Baroque Performance, playing with the Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra and performing for more master classes than he can remember. He was offered a position in the Swiss Orchestra: Ensemble 415 but made the life decision to stay at home and do what he is most passionate about, working with young musicians. More recently he has established his own boutique string studio in Chevron Island on the Gold Coast as well as running a lovely little ensemble by the name of Les Petites Etoiles ( the small stars ).He and his wife delight in their 3 daughters all of whom are entrenched in their own busy lives, he has two cats and a crazy lorikeet named Sqwark.Contact detailsBen [email protected] RobersonHi. Kim ShephardKim is an experienced teacher, who works across a number of private schools in the Tweed/Gold Coast area. Kim first stepped on stage at age 5, and has continued her Speech and Drama training and performing through to adulthood. She has studied and taught students from a diverse range of backgrounds including those with communication disabilities and gifted students. Kim has also worked for amateur and professional theatre companies and co-directed educational videos. Kim is offering private or small group (2-3 students) tuition to students in Year 1 - Year 4 and group lessons (4-6 students) to students in Kindergarten and Preschool. Speech and Drama lessons are designed to be fun, whilst developing students’ confidence, communication, voice projection and performance skills. Lessons can assist children with their everyday communication as well as preparing them for poetry, public speaking and drama performances at school and at local eisteddfods. Older students may also choose to undertake Speech and Drama Examinations through AMEB or Trinity College, London. Information regarding fees and enrolment forms are available at the school office. If you are interested or would like more information please contact Kim on 0408 764 993 [email protected] HibbardI offer piano/recorder/theory tuition - all ages/stages to HSC level and tertiary entrance level. I encourage students to explore many styles of music, with popular/classical/improvisation/jazz/ethnic/folk/avant-garde/experimental.My basic course is Kodaly (Mother tongue method - listening) with a large emphasis on reading skills also - this sets a student up for any type of music.I encourage students to do exams/competitions/performances - all levels.I also run classes in pre-private study - Kodaly based introductory classes of one year that will prepare a child for any instrument or voice lessons.Only one place left on Monday morning (either private study or 3 students in a prep class).Students are expected to have 1 lesson each week - all lessons must be caught up if missed, for whatever reason.I encourage lessons of 3/4 hour, but 1/2 hour per week at least is mandatory for rapid development.Private study $70 per hour ($35 per 1/2 hour) payable by the term in advance. Class $20 per student per week if 2 or more in class, payable by the term in advance. I expect my students to be keen, enthusiastic and to practise every day.

Playgroup has started again at Lindisfarne each Thursday and Friday morning from 9am-10.30am. The children and their parents have fun getting to know other local families and playing with their child in a supported environment. There are a couple of spaces available on each morning. Please contact the Sunshine Avenue administration or email me at [email protected] if you would like to join.

It has been a great start to the Preschool year for 2013. All children have now settled into the routine and seem to be happy in their new spaces. We have been talking about our families and friends and how we feel at the end of each day.Just a few reminders regarding Preschool:

• Thank you to all the families who have sent in their Family collages. Please keep sending them in as they help your child feel settled when they can see your photo close by.

• Please make sure that all items that are sent to school have your child’s name on them, especially shoes and socks.

• If you have any concerns or issues you would like to discuss with your child’s teacher, please book and make a time for a chat.

• The Parent Roster will be up in all rooms next week so if you would like to stay and play or just help out, please put your name down on the roster.

• Please feel free to bring in any bits and pieces that could be used for collage in the preschool - eg. small, clean boxes, scrap paper, material scraps, etc.

To help Kindergarten students settle into school life they have been introduced to their kind and helpful Year 4 Buddies. Together, Kindergarten and Year 4 have been making new connections and friendships through a range of fun activities. So far the buddies have read together, played games, made beautiful artworks as well as catch up over lunch at our Friday picnics. Throughout the year Kindergarten and Year 4 will continue to work together, hopefully learning from one another along the way. This is a highly valued program that provides students with a broader support network and positive role models.

Literacy Information hourNext Wednesday at 5.30pm (DST) the Kindergar ten teachers are holding an information session for all K i n d e r g a r t e n p a r e n t s explaining the ‘how and why’ of Literacy teaching in the Kindergarten program. We urge all of our Kindergarten parents to attend as this will assist when helping children consolidate skills taught at school.
