This is the fifth Web10 in the tenth year of Web Structures.

The ten years which have seen us grow in size and in

stature to be one of the leading proponents of creative

structural engineering in the region and beyond.

With the advent of Web Structures entering its 10th year in

the industry and with offices in both Singapore and

Malaysia, the management considers it timely to not only

reflect upon the past success but looking beyond that, to

review and equip the company for the very real tasks that

lie ahead. It is time to revisit our vision and our operations.

Web Management Offsite Meeting

With this in mind, an offsite meeting was organized for the

weekend of October 6; 9 senior management staff got

together for an interactive session to redefine Web

Structures’ core values, culture and to sharpen the

vision/mission statement. In the course of that weekend

we deliberated on our commitment and re-assessed our

capability of adapting ourselves to meet the challenges of

an increasingly competitive rapidly and ever changing

global market place. It was recognized that Web Structures

had always done many things well; our current record of

success, our commitment and the quality of our people and

our output bear testament to that fact. So, it’s not the

intention to wipe off the whole slate and re-invent

ourselves, but rather to build upon what we already can do

in an even better way. These ingredients which created the

present success must be retained, while addressing the

new, specific challenges of expanding in terms of size and

reach, globally. Strategies, direction and well-thought out

synergy is critical, so that the end result is an immediately

recognizable Web Product, no matter where the project is

located. How do we work and interact as effectively in this

new environment?

After 10 years, a Web Structures identity has been created,

but which needs to be re-visited at this juncture; the

foremost question being “Where Do We All Aspire To Be?”

This weekend should set a platform for the management to

unify thoughts and form strategic direction of the Company

in the years to come. Mr Paul Pafett, a Business Associate

and also a close friend of Dr Rezai, was invited and very

generously agreed to join the management team in Bintan,

to assist in facilitating the process.

NEW ANALYSIS SOFTWARE: PLAXISBy Masoud, KL Office, December 2006

PLAXIS is a finite element program for plane strain and

axisymmetric modelling of soil and rock behaviour. Fully

automatic mesh generation, allowing for a virtually infinite

number of 6-node and 15-node elements. Elements exist to

model walls, plates, anchors, geotextiles and soil-structure

interaction. A special tunnel designer exists to create circular

and NATM-like tunnels including lining and interface. Ground

loss during tunneling can be simulated. Fully automatic load

stepping procedure. Staged construction enables realistic

simulation of the construction process. Soil models: Linear

elastic, Mohr-Coulomb, Soft-Soil model (Cam-Clay like),

Soft-Soil Creep model (Cam-Clay like with time-dependent

behaviour), Hardening Soil model (double hardening).

Plaxis 3D Foundation is a finite element package

intended for the three-dimensional deformation analysis of

foundation structures. A project geometry is modeled using

a top view approach. Soil layers are defined by means of

boreholes. Multiple boreholes can be placed in the

geometry to define a inclined ground surface. It

automatically interpolates layer and ground surface

positions in between the boreholes. Structures are defined

in horizontal work planes. Multiple work planes can be

defined to create complex foundations, multi-storey

basements and relevant parts of the upper structure. The

program allows for an automatic generation of unstructured

2D finite element meshes based on the top view. From this

2D mesh, a 3D mesh is automatically generated, taking

into account the soil stratigraphy and structure levels as

defined in the boreholes and work planes.

Models can contain both drained and undrained layers. Steady pore pressures may be

generated by input of phreatic lines or by groundwater flow analysis. Large deformations may be

analyzed by means of an Updated Mesh (Lagrangian) calculation. Factor of safety calculation

by means of phi-c-reduction. Fully graphical input and output in a Windows environment.

Quadratic 15-node wedge elements are available to model the deformations and stresses in

the soil. Foundations may involve structural objects like walls, floors and beams. A beam

element can be used to model slender one-dimensional objects with a significant flexural

rigidity. Plate elements can be used to model raft foundations, basements, walls and floors of

buildings, as well as other parts of structures. The behaviour of these elements is defined using

elastic stiffness properties or non-linear deformation curves. Interface elements are

automatically added to walls to allow for a proper modelling of soil-structure interaction.

Circular and square piles can be defined using a pile designer. Massive piles are composed of

volume elements whereas hollow piles are composed of wall elements. Pile-soil interaction can

be modelled using interfaces around the pile. Various types of loads (point loads, line loads,

distributed loads) can be applied in the model.

The workshop commenced with Jessie Tan tracing the beginnings of We Structures, covering

its physical growth over the last 10 years and more importantly, presenting the correlation

between the growth in project portfolio, with the in- tandem growth of architects with whom

Web Structures first started working relationships. As the stature of these architects increased

internationally, so did Web Structures’s diversity and size of portfolio.

This was followed on by Dr Rezai who gave a presentation on the 7 levels of leadership, the

cultural entropy and the time management matrix.

WEB MANAGEMENT OFFSITE MEETING

The management team was then sub-divided into 5 groups, each group assigned with

developing each of these core values, starting with a write-up on how this is proposed to be

introduced, inculcated and infused into every person in Web Structures.

Dr Rezai and Mr Anthony Ang will undertake the role of defining the vision and sharpening

the vision statement.

Web’s hard earned legacy after ten years is - a reservoir of talent empowered by shared

values and a deep commitment towards providing unique and effective engineering options

through design excellence. The enrichment and development of this same legacy sets the

goal for WHAT we want to achieve in the future, and more importantly, HOW we go about

achieving such goals.

Via a very interesting and interactive

“select and discard” exercise

organized by Paul, the management

group identified the following core

values for Web Structures:-

We will make the necessary changes of adaptation to much

more complex and challenging working environments. But we

will hold steadfast to our integral beliefs; that we are committed

to valuing the talent and potential of each individual, that we

harness the strength and blessings of diversity through shared

core values, that we continue learning and enriching our work

force from different communities and cultures.

The way in which Web Structures manages its future

operations must lead our fellow colleagues towards a standard

of business excellence will help put us in a superior position in

the market place; and as we continue to grow and succeed, so

too should our partners, our clients, our consultants, around the

world.

For the sunseekers, there will be time to explore the beautiful sandy beaches,

sheltered coves, clear waters and the waterfalls, snorkeling, scuba diving and if

time permits, visit the nearby islands. Of course for the shopaholics you will not be

left out - Phuket is your paradise! The island has a great variety of shopping, from

bustling open-air village food markets, noisy night markets, street stalls and local

shops to western style department stores and upmarket specialist shops. With

traditional handicrafts, beautifully designed clothing, jewellery, ceramics, antiques,

housewares and much more. Will leave the rest to be explored during the trip!

Come March ’07 – we will immersed ourselves with the Phuket’s hospitality and

experience Thailand’s exotic culture!

Plans are underway as the Web Structures staff prepare to gear up for another

long awaited office trip to Phuket - a tropical island south of Thailand. The venue

was chosen as it always seemed to have perfect sunsets, interesting food and easy

living – features with which Phuket has been richly rewarded. The date has been

set for the 23rd weekend of March. The weekend will be packed with activities

which will include a site visit to one of our project – Laemsingh Villa and a short

classroom learning session with our very dear friend, Professor Paul Regan.

Our recent projects present new challenges and opportunities to us. The projects are fairly high-profile and

sizable. As such we have had to compete with international firms which have traditionally not been in the

region. Examples of these are Messrs Thorten and Tomassetti out of Seattle-USA for the project Jalan

Pinang, and Messrs Arup out of New York for the IMC towers, both in KL. We anticipate this trend to

persist, and look forward to future successes to mirror our current project utilization.

This is the fifth Web10 in the tenth year of Web Structures.

The ten years which have seen us grow in size and in

stature to be one of the leading proponents of creative

With the advent of Web Structures entering its 10th year in
