*** RANDOM ~:AILS ***

A month or so ago the Peds confiscated over 400 baby Mata Mata Turtles at the LA ai 1"port because of a vi olation of the Lacey Ac t.. '11he baby turtles were tn boxes laheled cochlids (fish), thus making them without proper turtle import permits .. The LA LiOO housed the lVlatas unt.il sui table homes were found. They were given away in lots of 25 to zoos who could care for them .. ***The 01' Lizard Lounge of (;olden Gulch is running an "in store" weekly special w~th a new special every week. A discount of up to 30~~ .. Bruce dnd Connie Delles are also offering a bonus card .. ***MHS will be on Grand again for the fourth yea.r .. GrandCld Days is June 2 and set up starts at 11 :30 AM .. The street fair ends at 5:00 PM' .. We will be at 1087 Grand .. Come and visit!***June special, all Frogtown Greetings in stock Tshirts are $6.00 each .. Give me a call .. ***Watch for turtles crossing the road .. These are females looking for nesting sites. Maybe you can help them across .. Injured turtles can be saved with 0uper Glue. Eggs have hatched after being removed from a DeC .. R .. turtle! Depends on how flat they are .. Cuch!***If any member has a success story on a herp please give a board member a call and we will use the story in Herp Hints at,a meeting .. ***Coming up in San Diego our board members would Like to get together with other board members to talk "shop" .. Contact me if interested .. ***Minnesota is having one hot May and the birds and bees started early .. ***"Rands On" at Como 200 went well with a lot of vollmteers showing up .. It was good to work with members of MRS I usually do not have much contact with! ***Como Zoo, being a city zoo, attracts a lot of people, but many of them have no respect for it or the animals .. Security is zero and people bring their garbage to feed the animals (wolves, etc.). Not a very good idea! fty that at MZG and you might become the food!***It is sad when something dies in your collection. !fly Malayan frogs died and so did the female Pine Snake that retained the two eggs. ***1 would hate to take inventory of my freezer. The dead critters have taken over the food space .. I forgot what a freezer is for .. I~ first dead snake is in there somewhere.***Sarina Brewer did the white pages cover, Del Jones did the listings .. Thanks for a job well done.***I·m sure no one will guess who did the drawings inside .. ***Fact: August is the only month in Minnesota it has never snowed .. Watch for a blizzard when Richard Paull comes up from Florida.***USA '1ioday says 400,000 families keep reptiles as pets and 400,000 families keep gerbi1.s as pets. What a great dinner party that would be if the families got together.***Don't forget to buy your raffle tickets for the Peter Pritchard patrons edition Bf Turtles of Venezuela .. Get your mom, brother or sister to buy one. The book would make a great Christmas prize for you!***Gctober 5 is the MRS Seminar and banquet and we need volunteers. Cookie bakers for sure! If anyone has extra room we could use some housing for out of towners. Give Ann Forwoll a call if you have room.***MZG update: Big I'1outh the male Beluga Whale is off the critical list 5-10-85. I sure hope he pulls through and lives .. J~G may get a pair of Giant Pandas from China this late summer.***MHS's first banquet is being held at the zoo. You will he admitted to the zoo nlc with your banquet admission and get to dine with the pandas .. ***stress can be a major factor in your herps health .. stress taxes us all including your reptiles. Newly collected herps need security. A hide box is a must .. Another idea to help a new animal, especially a high strung one, is to cover the glass with a newspaper or brown paper bagse Cut a 2 inch square window for observation .. Keeping a newly captured animal out of high traffic rooms will also help. TCR uses the paper trick to help calm down high strung herps and saves them from self inflicted injuries .. Another factor in stress is over handling new herps or gravid herps. stress also can be caused by more than one male in a cage during breeding season or with highly territorial reptiles. You can read more about stress in the book "The Bacterial Diseases of Reptiles!! by Dr. Richard A .. Ross, available at TCR or the MRS Library.***Notice,

2

the drawing for the book "Turtles of Venezuela" quet at MZG. Peter Pritchard himself will draw the is, thanks MHS Board members for your support and seminar/banquet.***May all your tails be happy!

AMHIIBIANS AND R~PTIL8S NATIVE TO MINN~SOTA by Barney Oldfield

Blue-spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale

Description: The adult blue-spotted salamander has a black, blue-black or grayish-black dorsal surface and a somewhat lighter ventral surface. The sides are speckled with small bluish spots. These small bluish specks are also present to a lesser degree on the back and belly. These sala.manders have 12 costa.l grooves, and they reach a total length of 3 - 5 inches (7 - 13cm.). Newly tr8Dsformed larvae have yellow specks ins~ead of the blue, but otherwize resemble the adults. The yellow coloration turns to the expectec: blue wi thin two weeks after leaving the pond. Four toes are found on the front feet and five on the rear.

IJabitat: Blue-spotted salamanders inhabit the forest floor of moist woodlands and boreal forests.. Small woodland ponds that retain water until late summer are used for breeding.. ~vidently a relatively dense forest canopy is necessary for the survival of this species.

~abitR: Little is known about the life-style of this salamander. The aaults may be found ~n the summer above ground under some type of cover such as bark, logs and moss. Apparently most activity occurs at night. They are known to hibernate under rocks and logs at the edges of woodland ponds.

iood: ~lue-spots are known to consume a large variety of inverteDrates" rrh8s8 include beetles, snails, earthvvorms, sowbugs and s~iders.. ThE~ aquatic larval stage eats small water crustaceans.

Breedin,r:t: ;:3pring courtship activi ty has been observed as early as .April 15th in '!i:3consin according to Vogt (1981 ).. J\ rather elaborate courting activity takes place with the male clasping the female from above while rubbing his nose over the front part of her body. There are IJeriods of thrashing about in the water that are followed by the pa.ir laying quietly on the pond bottom. After these courtship encounters cease, the male climbs off the female and deposits one to three spermatophores" The female then picks these up with her cloacal lips, and fertilization occurs internally" At the bottom of the pond eggs are laid singly or in small clusters of six to ten" The eggs are attached to vegetation.. 1'he larvae transform into subadults during the month of August ..

~tate status: None ..

Hote: Blue-spotted salamanders will arch 1heir tail and Viave it slowly back and forth when approached by a predator. A sticl\:y substance is excreted from glands at the base of the waving tail which is apparently foul tasting,,~

Herp Hints

.Bran I,'risch shm.Jed his 2 Senegal Chameleons and described his hw:;bandry techniques with them" 'They are kept in a 10 ga110n aquarium with a grass mat on the bottom .. He originally had 4 but 2 died The tank has a maze of branches and is heated by a red heat lamp over it They receive black light every other day. He drips water every other day also They are fed dusted crickets in a mason jar .. 'Ilhe chameleons feed from the jar and the crickets can't escape.. So far this seems to be working well for him. ]\lore later@ Janie vaughan asked a1Iout an Eastern Kingsnake (1 g. getulus) that hasn't shed for some time even though it has been in shed several times It was that she soak it in a wet sack and try to manually shed it out D .. K .. Compton asked ab:Gut a couple of Eastern Box Turtle

6

eggs that his female had laid@ It was felt they could be candled at one week to see if they were fertile. They should be marked on the top so that they wouldn't accidentally be turned. This could kill the embryo@ Another figure for candling was 10 to 14 days.
