Dear RJR Community,
We announced last week that our 188 initial Legacy Campaign donations totaled an impressive $86,857! We also shared a few examples of items recently approved by our School Improvement Team (SIT) that will be funded by these donations. But, if you are new to RJR, did not hang on every word at Orientation or Open House, or haven’t studied every PTSA publication, you might wonder how Reynolds could possibly need the $130,000 that is our goal for the Legacy Campaign this year. So please indulge us with a little “Legacy 101”.
The Legacy Campaign is the primary source of funding for both the PTSA and Booster Club. Both organizations support programs and activities that benefit students, parents and the faculty. We jointly sponsor the homecoming tailgate. The PTSA supports Open House and Reynolds Revue; teacher appreciation, recognition and support; and grounds beautification and improvement. The PTSA also funds four scholarships for graduating seniors. But, 85% of our Legacy Campaign goal is budgeted in gifts to the school and Booster Club to fill needs not addressed by school system funding.
The Booster Club considers funding requests and athletic needs submitted by coaches and our athletic director. Legacy Campaign dollars help with uniform costs, practice field rental and maintenance, and our annual All-Sports Celebration. The Booster Club recently purchased a utility vehicle for the athletic trainer to haul safety and emergency equipment and supplies from field to field during practices and to ensure a timely response when there is an injury.
The PTSA gift to the school helps fund school-wide professional performances as part of our arts magnet program. It helps maintain and update media center materials. More than 50% of the PTSA gift to the school is earmarked for “instructional support”. This pool of money is managed by our School Improvement Team (SIT) comprised of teachers, administrators, support staff and parents. SIT approves purchases not funded by the school’s instructional supply budget that we might categorize as “the cost of doing business”. Legacy funds are
used to purchase science lab materials, novels, projector bulbs, math teaching tools, speakers, groceries for food labs, document cameras, art supplies and much more.
Volume 6, Issue 7 RJR PTSA NEWSLETTER Oct. 22-Oct. 28, 2012
SIT did not evaluate a few requests last year because the projects were so large and funds were limited. A few other valid requests were outside the general “instructional supply” definition. With continuing school budget constraints and no school bond on the November ballot, our PTSA gift to school this year includes another pool to be managed by SIT to address special projects or capital initiatives. Six projects have already been identified, discussed and prioritized by SIT. The top four are:
1. New PCs for Student Services and several other staff members. The current PCs have not been upgraded in nearly 10 years.
2. One class set of cameras (30) for digital photography. This is an extremely popular class, but lacks the basic tools needed to teach it well.
3. A covered area where students can wait to board buses in the afternoon.
4. A new projector for the auditorium providing quality projection capability for student performances, Class Day, Key Club Follies, assemblies and other events.
We raised the Legacy Campaign goal this year so that we can fund some or all of these projects.
Thank you to the 188 donors who have already contributed this year. We’d like to double or triple the total number of donors! We don’t expect you to give more than you can, but we do hope you will choose to give something. You can direct questions to [email protected]. These funds enhance your student’s high school experience and expand his/her possibilities for the future. Your gift makes a difference and every gift counts.

Hats off to our fabulous Legacy Campaign team! Last spring, Chairmen Marie and Guy Arcuri, with Assistant Chairman Liz Kelly, began updating our Legacy materials and planning this year’s campaign. The team worked tirelessly through the summer, setting campaign goals, talking to potential donor groups, and producing and distributing materials. Their efforts are in full swing now, and the campaign is off to a great start!
Lynn Gwyn collects and records donations, makes deposits, and passes PTSA membership information on to Gina Caudill for processing. Marie and Liz have been hand-delivering donor packets all over Winston-Salem. Their efforts are ongoing, but these volunteers deserve a big cheer for all they’ve already done to make this year’s Legacy Campaign so successful!
Karen Morris and Jon Boling conducted training sessions last week for our College Search volunteers. These folks will work one-on-one with juniors and some seniors, helping the students initiate searches for education options after high school by familiarizing them with available resources on campus and on-line. Laura Angle is responsible for scheduling students who sign up to take advantage of this valuable service. Thanks to Karen, Jon, Laura and the volunteers who attended that training.
The annual Matt Gfeller Memorial Doughnut Run is not technically a school, PTSA or Booster Club event, but this race certainly has a deep and personal connection with Reynolds High School. Thanks to all volunteers who planned and worked together to ensure another successful run last weekend. And thanks to all runners and participants, particularly those who took the doughnut-eating challenge, for taking part in this worthwhile event that generates tremendous good from such tragedy.
Remember, it’s never too late to get involved at RJR! Check out the “Volunteer Information” page in the PTSA section of the website, or contact [email protected] .

The R.J. Reynolds Youth and Government delegation is accepting registrations for the 2013 Y&G conference in Raleigh, NC. The conference will run from Thursday, February 14th through Sunday, February 17th. The delegation meetings are held after school on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. Email Mr. Wiley at [email protected] for forms and details.
Are you looking for a way to make an impact on R. J. Reynolds students? Consider the ESL Tutoring Program.
Reynolds tutors are currently assisting 31 students in our ESL program. There are still more students who would benefit from just 45 minutes a week of one-on-one tutoring time. To be an ESL tutor, you do not need to speak Spanish or Korean or Tagalog. You just need to speak English and have a little time to give.
Currently, our biggest need is for Math (primarily Algebra II and Geometry) and English tutors, but all willing participants can be placed with a student.
If you are interested in being an ESL tutor or simply want to learn more about the program, please contact Deborah Casstevens ([email protected]) or Kathy McLean ([email protected]).
Meet new people. Make new friends. It's actually a TON of FUN!

“The Importance of Being Earnest", our main stage production, will be performed on October 24th, 25th and 27th at 7:00 p.m. We moved our Friday performance so it would not conflict with the football team’s
Senior Night, so come on out and support our fabulously talented actors. We have multiple students playing all parts, with changes taking place on stage. This is a new theatrical device which we have called "Changing Lanes" and we cannot find anyone else who has done it, so we are breaking new ground!
