Genesis 18:20-32
Negotiating goes back generations in our family. I watched my grocery-store-owner
grandfather bargain with his customers. I learned even more when I heard my mom in
the warehouses of Glen Elk where she talked every sales clerk down to minimum
prices. Just before I wrote this, I finished haggling with an eBay seller who finally took
my lowest offer. But none of us can hold a candle to Son #1.
My decorating dream was to get real wood blinds for six windows in the house,
saving nickels and dimes for years to make that happen. Son #2 installed them
downstairs, and I stepped back to admire my choice and his work. Wait...what? They
looked dark. I checked the packing slip, and the company had sent the wrong color.
Customer service was apologetic and sent the right color, and Son #2 had five of the six
windows done in no time. The last window was a different story. I had ordered the
wrong size, off by about an inch.
Customer service wasn’t so helpful this time. I could get the new blind at full price
because of my measurement mistake. My savings was depleted, as was my spirit.
That’s when I called for reinforcements, waking Son #1. He rubbed his eyes and said,
“Give me five minutes, and I’ll end this bull (insert four-letter word here).”
He had worked in a telephone center and was knowledgeable about working
towards “Yes” and dismissing “No.” He developed a probability spreadsheet, practiced a
few scenarios in his head, and dialed customer service. His first words were, “Let me
talk to someone who cares about the reputation of your company.”
Based on their past record, he told them, the company had a 66-percent “fail” rate
when it came to filling our orders, correctly—their error. “My mom has spent nearly a
thousand dollars with your company, and you’re going to punish her for a one-inch
mistake? She has an 18-percent error rate. Who’s making more mistakes? You have
caused her a lot of stress by getting the first order wrong and making her wait for the
new blinds. Doesn’t that count for something?” He was relentless and amazing. By the
time he was through, not only did I get a new blind in the right size and color at no cost,
I got to keep the wrong ones.
Negotiation is an art form, and Abraham set the benchmark when he bargained with
God to save innocent lives in Sodom and Gomorrah. God wanted to destroy the cities
because of their grave sin. Abraham shifted into first: “What if I found 50 innocent
people with the guilty? Would you spare the cities?”
When God agrees, Abraham shifts into second: “Okay, how about 40? I know I’m
just a silly human, but you are a merciful judge.” God takes the 40. Third gear: “Will you
take 30?” God takes 30. Fourth gear: “20?” God’s okay with 20. Then, Abraham hits
high gear: “Don’t get mad, but what if there are only ten?” The merciful judge agrees to
ten. Well, you know the rest of the story. Both cities are wiped out, but not because
Abraham didn’t give it his best shot.
Here’s what this story tells me: 1) Abraham was bold. Very bold. He’s trying to strike
a deal with the Almighty God. 2) Abraham is an expert intercessor. God hears the
prayers of a righteous man. 3) Abraham is on good terms with God. He got that way by
keeping a steady conversation with his heavenly Father.
When we hear the Gospel, Jesus teaches us to pray: call God “Our Father,” praise
him, ask for our needs, forgive us as we forgive others, and keep us from evil. Another
simple and perfect formula.
Now, let’s add to that the lessons we learn from Abraham: be bold! Intercede for
others! Stay in constant contact with God.
Worked for him. Why not us?

THE CHURCH DOORS ARE GETTING A WELL DESERVED “SPA” DAY.
Two of the church doors are getting some much needed TLC at a local wood shop. When they are feeling completely
refreshed, renewed and ready to take on the world again, two more will go on a short vacation. This will continue until all
the church doors are good as new. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for funding this project.

What to do when distractions interrupt your prayers For the past year or so I have been trying to pray on a regular basis, but I am constantly distracted. My mind wanders so easily. Do you have any suggestions?
Distractions in prayer are an inescapable part of the human condition and the result of our imagination. Even great saints experienced distractions in prayer. Some of their suggestions may help. When St. Thérèse of Lisieux struggled with prayer, she would recite an Our Father or Hail Mary or read from the Gospels. Praying an act of faith or returning to God’s presence and love can turn our focus away from other concerns, but even then, distractions may still arise. When we become aware of them, we should calmly renew our focus and continue our prayer. Saint Teresa of Ávila wrote in The Interior Castle, “We should not be distressed by reason of our thoughts, nor allow ourselves to be worried by them....[Thoughts are] inevitable. Do not let them disturb or grieve you.” No matter how often distractions return or how long they last, they are not sinful; rather, they are opportunities to show God that we are sincere about praying.
Saint Alphonsus, another great teacher of prayer, reminds us that prayer is necessary, beneficial, and always possible. Hang in there, he says, because the devil would like nothing

HELLO
Have you ever gone to an event and you don’t know anyone?
Of course you have! Everyone has at one time or another.
How did you feel? While some people are absolutely fine in
these situations, the majority of people are not. The same is
true when going to a church other than your own. We are
family at St. Pat’s. So if you see someone new in church or a
face you don’t recognize, say hello, introduce yourself, and
welcome them to St. Pat’s. Make their visit a pleasant one
and one they will remember and share with others.
