FROM FATHER JACK, PASTOR In some ways, March 13, 2020 seems like a very long time ago; in other ways it seems like it was yesterday. Friday, March 13, 2020 is the day that we

were told by the Cardinal to close the doors of our Churches to help fight the spread of the Corona Virus. At the time it was thought to be for just a

short period of time. We were told that it might just be 15 days, just enough time to take some of the pressure off of our hospitals. All that we need-

ed to do was to “bend the curve”. This is now the first weekend of October; it has been 19 months since that long ago March day. Our Churches are

open, but we are still dealing with the effects of this ongoing pandemic. People are slowly returning to our pews, and, for the first time since this all

began, children are returning to in person classes for religious education. We are more open than we were even a year ago, but we still have a ways

to go.

With the return of Religious Education classes, I thought that this might be a good time to give you an update of where we are as a Collaborative.

There are still some things that we are doing in response to the pandemic, and there are some things that we are asking our parishioners to do. As a

Collaborative we have set aside a section in each Church for those who have chosen to wear a mask and wish to be seated only with other masked

parishioners. We have also asked all of our Eucharistic Ministers to wear a mask while distributing the Blessed Sacrament. Per order of the Archdio-

cese we have ceased offering the consecrated wine to parishioners. All ministers of Communion are also required to sanitize their hands prior to dis-

tributing Communion. We have asked our parishioners to consider wearing a mask if they have not been vaccinated or if they do not have natural

immunity. We also ask those who are not feeling well to please stay home. We are continuing to show the Mass on our website and on PAC-TV on

Sunday afternoons. Hand sanitizer can be found throughout each church and we ask people to use it liberally.

One of my heroes is Saint Pope John Paul II. I was in High School when he became Pope, and, as a young priest, I had the privilege of meeting him

during my one visit to Rome. During his 26 year pontificate, one of Saint John Paul II’s most used phrases was, “Do not be afraid”. This phrase, to my

mind, became the theme of his papacy. I think of this great man, and I think of this great message, because I feel that we live in a time of great fear.

That fear has always been present, but the last 19 months have seemed to only intensify it. As people of faith it is time for us to remember these

words. It is time for us to not be afraid. There are some practical things that we can, and should, do to protect ourselves and one another. We are

doing those things. However, we need, I believe, to strive to get back to being a people of faith. I truly believe that we need to get back to living our

lives without a sense of fear.

During this pandemic, Saint Mary and Saint Joseph have been safe places to come in worship. As I write this I am unaware that there is even one case

of a person contracting the virus on our property. We will continue to do those common sense things that keep us safe; In the meantime, keep com-

ing, come back if you haven’t yet ventured out, and above all, do not be afraid.

God bless,

Fr. Jack Graham

Monday, October 18 at 6:30 PM Sacred Heart Church, 340 Center St., Middleboro, MA

October 3, 2021 — Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading Genesis 2:18-24

The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be

alone. I will make a suitable partner for him."

So the LORD God formed out of the ground

various wild animals and various birds of the air,

and he brought them to the man to see what he would

call them; whatever the man called each of them would

be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle,

all the birds of the air, and all wild animals;

but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,

and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and

closed up its place with flesh.

The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib

that he had taken from the man.

When he brought her to the man, the man said:

"This one, at last, is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

this one shall be called 'woman, '

for out of 'her man’ this one has been taken."

That is why a man leaves his father and mother

and clings to his wife,

and the two of them become one flesh.

Responsorial Psalm 128:1-2,3,4-5,6

R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Blessed are you who fear the LORD,

who walk in his ways!

For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;

blessed shall you be, and favored.

R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine

in the recesses of your home;

your children like olive plants

around your table.

R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Behold, thus is the man blessed

who fears the LORD.

The LORD bless you from Zion:

may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem

all the days of your life.

R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

May you see your children's children.

Peace be upon Israel!

R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Second Reading Hebrews 2:9-11

Brothers and sisters:

He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, "

that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all

things exist, in bringing many children to glory,

should make the leader to their salvation perfect through

suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being con-

secrated all have one origin.

Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

Gospel Mark 10:2-16

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,

"Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?"

They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did

Moses command you?"

They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of

divorce and dismiss her."

But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts

he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of

creation, God made them male and female.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother

and be joined to his wife,

and the two shall become one flesh.

So they are no longer two but one flesh.

Therefore what God has joined together,

no human being must separate."

In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.

He said to them,

"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another

commits adultery against her;

and if she divorces her husband and marries another,

she commits adultery."

And people were bringing children to him that he might

touch them,

but the disciples rebuked them.

When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,

"Let the children come to me;

do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to

such as these.

Amen, I say to you,

whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child

will not enter it."

Then he embraced them and blessed them,

placing his hands on them.

EVANGELIZATION

The Gospel acclamation in our liturgy sums up the day’s scriptures and give us a clear path as to how we are to live our lives. “If we love one another, God re-

mains in us and his love is brought to perfection in us.” Loving one another is not always easy and some-times requires work! Nevertheless, whether married

or single, young or old, each one of us must take these words to heart. “Practice makes perfect” - so this

week, pray for the grace to live by these words, loving one another as Christ loves you, with mercy, gentle-

ness and patience.
