We have a number of fantastic community events happening soon. But before I talk about them, I would like to congratulate the Preschool staff and parents for their highly successful Preschool Lawn sale last Saturday. A lot of work went into preparation and this year Mrs Carter produced even more plants than last year! It’s a credit to Mrs Grant, the Preschool team and parents for the positive atmosphere and their fantastic fundraising efforts. Today the Northern Cluster Principal’s group met to plan the teams strategic direction and associated professional learning for staff in the Northern Suburbs over the next eighteen months. It was great to have the team meet in our new conference room yesterday. All the Principals were very complementary about our office upgrade. Thursday will be great with the Musica Viva annual performance commencing at 9 am. Students are familiar with many of the songs thanks to our Music Teacher, Mrs Kath Whitson. Parents are most welcome to join us. Next week is an especially busy week. Our newly formed choir lead by Ms Emily Kuhn will perform at the Lyons Official Opening Celebration on Tuesday 10 June. Entertainment starts at 5.30 pm at the Lyons Garamanak Park. Our choir is the first to perform. Later on in the evening Jessica Mauboy performs. The next night, Wednesday 11 June, is Disco night at Wanguri School! Times are found within the newsletter. On Thursday 12 June Sports Day activities commence with the field events for Years 3/4 Gawa, 4/5 Dorman, 5/6 Gilligan and 5/6 Kuhn. More details of the field events and sports day will be in next weeks newsletter. Kind regards Jenny Robinson Wanguri Primary School Newsletter Personal Best

In last week’s newsletter I discussed teaching Habits of Mind and how it

explicitly supports students’ identify productive mental habits that, along with

attitudes and perceptions, form the backdrop of the learning process.

The dispositions identified are called habits because it is important to increase

the frequency with which students display them, just as it is important to

encourage students to develop good study and/or listening habits.

The habits of mind fall into three general categories: critical thinking, creative

thinking, and self regulated thinking.

If you have mental habits that exemplify critical thinking, you tend to

 Be accurate and seek accuracy

 Be clear and seek clarity

 Maintain an open mind

 Restrain impulsivity

Take a position when the situation warrants it

Respond appropriately to others’ feelings and level of knowledge

If you have mental habits that exemplify creative thinking, you tend to

 Persevere

Push the limits of your knowledge and abilities

Generate, trust, and maintain your own standard of evaluation

Generate new ways of viewing a situation that are outside the boundaries of

standard conversations

If you have mental habits that exemplify self-regulated thinking, you tend

to

 Monitor your own thinking

 Plan appropriately

 Identify and use necessary resources

 Respond appropriately to feedback

Evaluate the effectiveness of your actions

There are many approaches that can help students develop and use productive

habits of mind in the classroom. I am hoping that by providing some

information that this may assist quality conversations about how your child

may be effective and successful across all aspects of their lives.
