God bless, Fr Bob
Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Holy Cross Parish
A few friends have said to me, “Why would you use up your annual leave by leading a parish pilgrimage?” Well, a number of reasons. For one, the Archdiocese determined two years ago that priests who led pilgrimages must do so from their annual leave. There was no other choice. Secondly, when you have experienced the Holy Land so much, there comes a deep longing to share it with others. Thirdly, when we have been blessed previously with connections in the Holy Land, it made sense that this was the opportune time. Fourthly (and blessedly without planning it this way), it came at the beginning of Lent when the many places of the Holy Land are mentioned in the Gospels. ‘Penitential’ means to come to a new realisation or conversion. In being penitential, we must move beyond the usual.
Certainly, a pilgrimage to the Holy Land moves us from the usual. The liturgical life of Lent moves us from the usual, as well as our actual Lenten practices. Lent is a pilgrimage. We are called to more commitment in our prayer life, fasting and almsgiving (acts of charity). When we come to mass during the Season of Lent, things are different. We ‘tone down’ our ‘Christian, triumphant tone.’ We accept, with Christ, that not everyone will like us or what we want to do and believe. No wonder we begin with ashes.
We don’t sing or say the Gloria. We say the ‘Confiteor’ where we symbolically strike our breasts as a sign of our despair that we long for life to be better.
This longing is expressed even as we prepare to hear the words of Christ in the Gospel where, we are not triumphant with ‘Alleluias’ but, acknowledge Christ’s reign, even in his weakest moments: “Glory and Praise to you O Christ.”
In our parish in this time of Lent, we also return to the Nicene Creed. This was once the required Creed of the mass and had been for many centuries. It was considered a more profound expression of the faith. It eventuated as the norm after some king decided to use it at his coronation and the Pope at the time, determined that it therefore become the creed of every mass. The Apostles’ Creed always existed in the Baptismal rites, the rosary and other prayer rituals and thankfully survived this period. It was due to the new Missal in 2011 that we restored the option for the Apostles’ Creed to be used in mass.
The Nicene Creed has unusual language, is more laborious and can also make us feel a little uneasy but, it is also a Lenten experience. It subjects us to an experience of penitence. It’s use in Lent is an opportunity to meet afresh the Apostles’ Creed – the creed of our Baptism - at the Easter celebration.

STEWARDSHIP AWARENESS
Second Sunday of Lent
“Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1
God calls all of us to leave behind our old ways and to follow Him, placing our complete trust in Him. Some of the old ways that we may have to struggle to leave behind might be materialism, selfishness, and greed. Yet God promises to show us a new land and a better way to live. Remember what St Theresa of Calcutta said, “God does not call us to be successful, God calls us to be faithful.”

Please donate to Project Compassion 2020 and help mothers like Phany continue to uplift their communities, and provide food for their families. Let’s Go Further, Together.
