Welcome to the April edition of theWagensville News.

The good news for the month is thatour web site “vwclub.com.au” is beingbrought up to date thanks to club memberDavid Holinger who has gratefully assistedus with this endeavour. Thanks very muchDavid.

The VWCV “Have a Go Day” was heldon the 3rd of April at Werribee. The weath-er on the day was very changeable - fromrain, wind to sunshine, but for the elevenstarters on the day, a great day was had byall. I must thank Andrew and Donald Ermelfor allowing me to drive their “hot” cars. Ittook me a little time to get into the swingof motorkhanas again since my Mini CooperS days of my youth quite a few years ago. I remember those days well.

A special thanks must go to Jon Edsell,Michael Clark and Mark Zellner for theirexplanation and guidance on the day. Weall had a terrific time.

Even the wind couldn’t upset the barbe-cue that Cheryl Ermel and Ross andMercedes Woolley had prepared. It wasmoved into a 20-metre container to getaway from the wind, which allowed thefood to be cooked, and it was great. Thanksguys.

Motorkhanas are a great way to learnproper car control in an environment whichis safe, controlled, and with keen experi-enced club members who are very keen andwilling to help. Could I suggest that itshould be a mandatory part of all clubmembers’ learning experience in carhanding skills, which will provide an impor-tant part in making us all better drivers.

For all those who missed the day, please get involved at the next event, as

VWCVHave a Go Day

> Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5

The ‘Have a Go” Motorsport day was run onSunday April 3rd. The day started outlooking glum, with moderately high winds, and the occasional rain showers. Whenwe arrived at the ground it was wet, butonly just wet enough to make the loose soilon top of the ground very sticky.

We set up, took entries, and had thedrivers briefing; by that time the groundhad dried out and we were ready to go!

We started two tries at each event, witha total of four events. The times of everycompetitor, indicated that everyone therewould be at least mid field in our typicalGroup 5 motorkhana events; and one firsttimer, Carl Evans, would have been in thetop 3 for his class, at a Group 5 motorkhanaevent.

In the afternoon we had a Khanacross, again very competitive times were posted.Surprise of the day was that a Mark 1 Golf(with a few small modifica-tions!) was able to beat aPorsche Carrera 4 on theKhanacross track. The 3drivers in the Golf consis-tently were about 2 to 3seconds faster than the 2drivers of the Porsche; andthe 2 drivers in thePorsche also drove theGolf! See, as I havealways said, VWs are goodat this form of Motorsport.

We did not get as many first timers as Ihoped, but I am sure that Carl, Paul, Cheryland Ross enjoyed themselves, and I hopethey learnt something about motorsport andwill come along to future events to havesome fun and represent the VWCV. Thank

Adventure tothe Red Centre

The club is planning an epic three weekVolkswagen adventure that will commencearound fourteen months from now on 17 June2006 and conclude on 7 July 2006.

This will be a major event in theVolkswagen Club of Victoria’s calendar for2006 and comprises a 5,400 km four wheel VWodyssey (all on well made roads) fromMelbourne to Alice Springs in the NorthernTerritory and return. We will travel throughsuch interesting and famous places asAdelaide, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, CooberPedy, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, Yulara,Uluru, Woomera, Hawker and the FlindersRanges.

Accommodation throughout the threeweeks will be a mixture of on-site cabins, motel units and camping and there is amplescope for participants to vary the accommoda-tion mix according to personal taste. We planto cover as many of the famous main CentralAustralian tourist highlights as we can in thetime that is available. There will be the oppor-tunity over the three weeks to see many of thereal Australian outback/Red Centre icons andreally soak up the incredible and uniqueatmosphere that exists in this part of our greatcountry.

There are, of course, many significantchallenges that will be encountered bothorganising and participating in a trip of thismagnitude. These include travelling in convoy, sometimes for up to 10 hours a day, over 5,400kms, and the challenge of maintaining effec-tive communication and mutual support overextensive travelling distances and the remote-

ness and isolation of much of the country northof Port Augusta. Bearing this in mind we havedecided to restrict the number of cars on thetrip to a maximum of 12 to try to minimise ourexposure to major problems and difficulties. This will be a real “hands on” four wheel VWadventure where those participating will needto undertake extensive forward planning andpreparation of their cars, equipment andtravelling kit over the next fourteen months.

A very detailed 15 page trip brochure hasbeen prepared and this covers such diversematters as the proposed daily itinery, background information, travelling arrange-ments, car preparation, approximate costs andbooking arrangements. If you wanta copy of the brochure, that includesthe trip application form, please letme know and I can email one to you.Alternatively I can post a copy toyou if you do not have email facili-ties. Further information will beavailable at the April VWCV meetingat the RACV Club.

For the new millennium, Herbie hasadded digitised stunts to his already impres-sive regime, outwitting regular cars withmanoeuvres that defy belief. In one scene hedrives up and over another car to take thelead in the race, all with the help of computeranimation.

However, many of Herbie's tricks - suchas the blinking headlights and jumpingsuspension - are mechanical, built into the carand operated by remote control.

Meanwhile, the Hollywood gossip mill isin overdrive over the movie's female lead, played by singer-actor LindsayLohan.

According to reports, theactress has been slapped with alawsuit by two Los Angelesmotorists who claim they wereinjured in a traffic accident involv-ing Lohan. •

The forthcoming Disney film “Herbie: FullyLoaded” tells the now familiar story of aclassic Volkswagen Beetle that has a mindand feelings of its own, on its quest tobecome a star of the Nascar racing circuit, butwhich along the way falls in love with a newBeetle.

For car-maker Volkswagen, the film is aproduct-placement godsend.

"It's a great opportunity to do somethingspecial with the new product," says VWAustralia spokesman Matthew Wiesner.

The company's global publicity campaignto bask in the movie's release is currentlybeing discussed in Germany.

In the film, Herbie is rescued from ascrapyard before being resurrected into aracing star. Not surprisingly, the stripes andoff-white colour scheme remain, as does therace number 53.

Herbie then races, among other cars, aPontiac GTO, better known here as theHolden Monaro.

The race sequences were shot at theCalifornia Speedway in the US, during thepace-car laps of Nascar races, according toonline film database imdb.com.

The film, scheduled for release in the USand Canada on June 24, is the latest instal-ment of the Herbie series, which began withThe Love Bug in 1968.

According to imdb.com, the VW Beetlebeat competing marques, including Volvo andToyota, for the lead role in the original film.
