For those of you who received a VW Bookfor Christmas, like me, the learning continuesand it seems that each book presents anotherslant on the wonderful history of theVolkswagen marque. What we read in booksis great, but we don't appreciate the knowl-edge of many of our Club members into thehistory of Volkswagen, especially those whohave been around the Club for many years. Iencourage you all to discuss any questionsyou may have with one of our Club membersat any of our general meetings or during oneof our events. I've been a member of our Clubfor approximately 6 years, butsome of these people have beenmembers for 30 to 50 years. Wemust continue to learn.

I'll see you all at the generalmeeting on Tuesday 18th Januaryat the RACV Club so please comealong.

U-Turn to GermanyZwickau

Dateline: Sunday 19th September Location: Zwickau Peter-Breuer Str As you may have heard, by accident westumbled across the recently opened AugustHorch museum. This world-class museumhas some of the best displays of Horch,DKW, Audi, VW and Trabant cars, andmemorabilia. Again we were in a rush andcould only spend an hour looking around themuseum.

From here it was decided to get somelunch at a local pub before our drive toNurnberg. Our intrepid bus driver Leonardthen proceeded to drive the bus right into

the centre of Zwickau to find our authenticlunch. What better place than opposite thefamous Dom St Marien.

The Domgarten/Bruabaus was a quaintbeer garden with plenty of space to accom-modate 28 hungry tourists and one Germanbus fahren (bus driver). We were all happyin the sunshine eating local cuisine anddrinking the local beer. After lunch, Joy Gdecided to explore the Dom and get somephotos of the lovely square.

It was a surprise when Joy bought backher newly discovered friend, an elderlytowns-woman.

> Mikhal Surie being chaffered by Andrew Ermelkof – August Horch Museum. Photo courtesy of Cheryl Ermel.

> Cheryl Ermel on the VWCV’s lunch at Zwickau

Page 17: Wagensville JAN 05

17

> Pictures were sourced from the internet, as I was too busy eating a very nice schnitzel and drinking beer to take photos.

I sat here...

Well the elderly lady made herselfwelcomed by squeezing in on the table andstarted nattered away to us in German. When we asked Joy where she met thewoman, her reply was “She just followedme!” The conversation was of course aboutwhere we were from and other bits andpieces. Bernd had now finished his mealtried to translate her broken English andGerman nattering to the rest of the group. What a mistake!

Her gaze had obviously moved to themen in the group. She must have thoughtall her Christmas’ had come at once as shesaw there were more men than women. Shequickly asked which males were single andavailable. Poor Andrew was asked toremove his cap so that she could admire hislong ponytail. Bernd who could speakGerman was also thought to be a suitablecatch. Each single guy in the group thenwas pointed out and she then proceeded tonatter away to them asking questions. Bythen Bernd stopped translating and we wereleft to our imagination as to questions beingasked and her intentions.

It was decided that it would not be agood idea to encourage her any further asshe was making herself far too comfortablefor our liking. She must have gotten themessage, as after some persuasion (andtime) she said auf Wiedersehen and

wandered off still talking (probably aboutthe lovely Aussie boys who got away).

Well it was an interesting experiencemeeting the locals in Zwickau. And in caseanyone is interested in Zwickau (or Joy’sfriend), I have added a couple of websiteswith all the details and the places to visit.

To really get the feeling of sittingopposite the Dom St Marien, go to thiswebsite. It is minus the umbrellas andseats, but it gives you a panoramic view ofwhat we experienced on the trip.

Coming in June 2005:

Herbie: Fully Loaded

Start your engines! Herbie, the most beloved car star of themall, is back and Lindsay Lohan's got him in Disney's all newrevved-up comedy adventure, "Herbie: Fully Loaded." Lohanstars as Maggie Peyton, the new owner of Number 53 - thefree-wheelin' Volkswagen bug with a mind of its own - whoputs the car through its paces on the road to becoming aNASCAR competitor. Herbie's got some new tricks under hishood as he takes audiences for an action-packed spin in thishigh-speed comedy. With an all-star cast along for a wild ride, this comedy puts Herbie to the test - on-road, off-road, on thetrack and into the record books.

THE sound of a 1960s Volkswagen Beetle's 1100 cc enginehard at work was never melodious. The attraction was that theraspy little bugger sounded better than your footsteps as othersdrove past.

But in a high-powered entrepreneurial spirit, two Americanshave captured the clatter, the wheeze and the glory on a newcompact disc called The Beetles. Greatest Sounds of the '60sand '70s.

The reverberations on the disc are the 1960 1100 cc, the 1973 1600 cc, and the 1978 1600 ccfuel-injected engines. There are 30 tracks and they have alluring titles such as Idle with engine revs;3rd gear at 35 mph; Downshift, 3-2; Turn off, handbrake; and Horn.

"You can't beat the sound of an old Volkswagen," says R. Charles Gilfix, who helped create the CD.

He argues that the attraction of the disc isn't so much about the sound as the memory. "Nobody hasbad memories of a Volkswagen, it always evokes fond memories of a place or a time," he says. Ifyou didn't own one, then you probably knew someone who did, he reasons.

Imagine the possibilities. Sitting in a 7-Series at a traffic light, disc on, the super-duper stereo crankedup and BMW's finest luxury car sounding like a 1960 VW engine being revved. Sounds like fun, buthow does one hum along to a tune like Downshift, 3-2?

The disc costs $US12.99 ($A16.60) and is available at beetlesounds.com

> Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5

The Group 5 Motorkhana series continues toprovide entry-level motorsport in 2005, withan emphasis on fun and learning.

What is a Motorkhana?A motorkhana is a low speed test of carcontrol, challenging the driver’s ability toaccelerate, brake and position a vehicleaccurately. Motorkhana events are made upof a number of individual tests, where onecar at a time negotiates a course that ismarked out by flags, in the aim of complet-ing the fastest correct time. Events can beconducted on sealed (concrete or bitumen)or unsealed surfaces (gravel, dirt, sand, etc)and test layouts can vary greatly fromsimple slaloms to complicated tests requir-ing reversing or the determination of thebest possible route.

Motorkhanas allow persons of all ages todevelop and improve their car manoeuvringskills, with opportunity for practice withundersteer and ample opposite-lockoversteer. As such teenagers under the ageof 16 are able to learn key Car Control skillsprior to being let loose on the roads, leavingthem with the ability to learn more aboutroad craft.

What is required?Competitors can compete in almost any car, provided that it is in a safe and presentablecondition. Some competitors elect to buildpurpose built vehicles, known asMotorkhana Specials, which are generallyvery light weight and a have short wheel-base, these compete in separate classes toRoad Cars. All drivers are required to wearsuitable seat belts and suitable clothing andshoes. The only other requirements are aLevel 2 Non Speed CAMS licence, $44 or $22

for those aged 12 to 18 (Juniors). Entry Feesfor Group 5 Motorkhanas are $15 or $10 forJuniors.

The 2005 SeriesThe Group 5 Committee has decided on achange to the class structure for 2005, inorder to allow for a more even competition. In essence the changes are to separate carswith Engines Over Driven Wheels (EODW),from those with Engines Away from DrivenWheels (EADW). This had previously beendone for small cars, due to the abundance ofFront Wheel Drive cars in that category. With the increasing numbers of larger FrontWheel and Four Wheel Drive vehicles theinequalities that were seen in the smallerclasses were regularly showing up in thelarger car classes over the past few years.

The classes are outlined below:Class A: Up to 4250mm EODW Class B: Up to 4250mm EADW Class C: Over 4250mm EODW Class D: Over 4250mm EADW Class E: All Specials/

Unregisterable cars

There has been a minor adjustment tothe length of the vehicles to accommodaterunning five classes, instead of splitting bothClasses C&D into two they have beencombined and split with some of the smallercars in Class C being placed into therelevant smaller car class. Series trophieswill be awarded for the highest point scorerin each class (best 8 results count towardthe pointscore). Points will only be awardedto members of the Group 5 Clubs, howeverevents are generally open to all CAMS affili-ated club members. Trophies will be award-ed to the fastest competitor in each class at

Page 23: Wagensville JAN 05

each event. A 6th trophy is to be awardedin 2005, being for the best Junior of theSeries. Juniors will continue to compete inthe vehicle class (as above) and will bescored in those classes as well as againsteach other on a handicap system. Handicapfactors (outlined below) will be multiplied bythe total time (including penalties) for theevent.

HandicapsClass A: 0.94 Class B: 0.90 Class C: 0.92 Class D: 0.86 Class E: 1

Other venues are beingsought, especially on the Inner, Eastern andSouth Eastern areas of Melbourne.Supplementary Regulations and Entry Formsfor each event will be available from thepromoting club prior to the event, or at thevenue on the day of the event.

2005 Group 5 Speed Event SeriesA new year brings a new Group 5 SpeedEvent series and the 2005 series sees aslight change in the mix of events.2005 sees the return of a SuperSprint atSandown with the John Mott event, run byNissan Car Club, being added to the series. This event is added to four 95 dBaSuperSprints at Phillip Island throughout theyear, three hillclimbs at Morwell and twoAutoCross Events at Geelong MotorsportsComplex at Avalon. Those memorable Beetle experiences:

• Favourite VW sound: the chuff-chuff noise they used to make with burnt-out valves.

• Favourite VW fire: when a heavy passenger in the back causes the seat springs to short out the battery.

• Favourite VW push start: when the six-volt battery goes flat - usually on a rainy night.

• Favourite VW cattle incident: usually on a country road involving a very surprised driver and a cow/sheep/kangaroo, because of the six-volt headlights having an effective range of less than two metres on high beam.

• Favourite VW run out of petrol: no fuel gauge.

• Favourite VW burst ear drum: when somebody slammed a door.

• Favourite VW turn indicators: using hand signals when the flip-out indicators no longer worked.

The club requires all CHvehicles to undertake a safetycheck every two years. Safetychecks are similar to roadwor-thy checks. A roadworthycertificate can be accepted inlieu of a safety check. Theappointed club technicalofficers conduct safety checksat Tech Days and by appoint-ment.

A safety check ensures thatthe CH plate vehicle is safe todrive on club gazetted eventsand approved limited usage. Italso encourages the mainte-nance, restoration and preser-vation of all types of VWs.
