Hello club members. This year’s activitieshave commenced with the RACV Rally onSunday the 23rd of January. It was the firsttime I have attended this rally and it won’tbe the last. The day was really fantastic.Cars of all different marques attended and itwas great that a stock standard 1960 1200ccBeetle wasn’t the slowest car, and was ableto pass many of the other vehicles. Latemodel Ferrari’s, however, presented a fewproblems.

Once assembled into the area allocatedfor the vehicles to be judged, it was differ-ent to see a 1952 MG TC on one side and a1929 Rolls Royce on the other side of myVW. There was much interest in the VWson the day. Other club members whoattended also enjoyed the day. There wereapproximately 20 other VWs at the event.

The next event on the calender is the“Picnic at Hanging Rock” on the 13thofFebruary. Please remember to come alongas we wish to make this a BIG club eventand to have a great show of Volkswagens.

There are many people around that areinterested in Volkswagens. I was sittingout the front of my house one Saturday justafter Christmas having a few quiet beerswith some of my neighbours, when a chapcame over to talk to us. It seems that hehad owned a few VW’s in the past and hada roof rack to fit a Beetle. He asked me if Iwanted it - of course I said yes. Now I’mthe proud owner of a new roof rack.

A couple of weeks later when Jill and Iwere holidaying in Tasmania, our neigh-bour’s daughter was married. The twowedding cars they chose were an oldDamiler and a Mark Five Jaguar. It sohappened the driver of the Jaguar was anex-VW nut. When he saw my VWs in the

Cape Yorkin a Beetle

The story began a year ago when a forgot-ten, unloved, empty shell of a Volkswagenwas bought by Peter to be restored. Littledid the car know that it was being rebuiltinto a vehicle which eventually would showmany 4X4 Cars what it is made of!!

The plan was for Peter to take me toCape York in the Beetle. He closed hisbusiness for the month of June, and set offfrom Don Valley in Vic. towards Cairns. Ihad only 18 days holiday, so I flew to Cairnsto meet up with him. The fun could start! After having a good look at Cairns, a boatride along the river and the following day atrain ride up to Kuranda, we set off toDaintree to stay the night at the campingground.

My first experience (after many yearstravelling in a VW Campervan with all themodern conveniences)at pitching a littletent, sitting on little stools - with matchingtable (1 foot high) and cooking on a oneburner gas stove. In other words, making

do with as little as possible since there isnot much room in the Beetle.

Our trip took us across Daintree river onthe ferry onto a dirt road towards CapeTribulation. The rainforest never ceased toamaze us. What a beautiful sight to see. Ata stopover we met our first group of touristsand their guide. He was not convinced thatthe Beetle could make it towards and acrossthe Bloomfield River but nothing could stopus. It was a rough, steep road - but wemanaged.

The Bloomfield River was another story -it did not look promising! ! We wadedthrough, the river was terribly wide andthose boulders right in the middle! Some ofthem we shifted, but there was one greatbig one in the middle, I had to stand on it todirect the car around it, that meant intodeep water! Boy, did this crossing by theBeetle attract a lot of attention! So manymovies rolling cameras and pictures shot!Cape York here we come. If we can getacross the Bloomfield , we can goanywhere! Cooktown was our next stop. This is were Captain Cook beached his shipfor repairs. So much history! It is a fascinat-ing town.

The following day we continued towardsLaura Homestead which was a great drivethrough the National Park and decided tostay at the Laura Hotel's camping ground. The rest of the afternoon was spent lookingat aboriginal paintings and watching aperformance by the local school in front ofthe hotel. Ninety percent of the kids areAboriginals. Peter talked me into sleepingout under the stars - I seemed to watchthem all night, but must have sleptsometime. We were first on the road nextmorning - lovely to drive all this distance

> Erika Behrendt on her trip to the top of Australia in a Beetle...

17

and no one around, as if you are the onlypeople in the world.

Hann River was the next stop for petrol. We were too early. The camping groundwas full with campers, they only just wokeup. Lots of them came to talk to us (funnyhow many of the travellers had owned aBeetle long time ago!), wondering if wewere actually taking the VW all the way upnorth - warning us - taking pictures!!Overwhelmed and with a tankfuls of petrolwe travelled on. The change from rocky- tosandy roads with ditches and deep ruts attimes made for an interesting trip. We wentfor a skinnydip in the Archer River on theway and went on and on, it seemed neverending.

Our next target was the Wenloch River -everyone has to use the crossing - it can bevery deep and sandy. We reached the rivermid afternoon. Quite a few campers hadtheir tents pitched on the other side - that'swhere we intend to stay for the night. Asalways I waded through the river and gavePeter the okay to go ahead. All I could dowas cross my fingers! Too many peoplewere watching! Come on little Beetle, youcan make it!! And it did! If the car hadfeelings, the applause it got must havemade it so proud. We had a lovely eveningwith all the fellow campers around the fire.

Next day more sandy , and rough roads -

what fun! The Elliot Falls and the nearbyFruitbat Falls are a sight to see - what alovely spot - no wonder most travellers liketo stay a night and enjoy them. We had agood swim and look around but decided togo on, time was short!!

On the way to the Jardine River wepassed two 4X4's, little did they know wehad our CB radio on and listened as onewarned the other that a little Volkswagenwill pass them any minute, and the otherone answered: "How embarrassing". Boy,this is fun! The local Aboriginals run theferry on the Jardine River and charge you afortune. Since the river was low, lots of the4X4's drove along the old telegraph roadand through the river - saving them $20.00each. We took the easy way out, we didn'tfancy seeing the Beetle float away!!

As much as we enjoyed the road up to theJardine, on the other side the roads are notmaintained and the corrugations wereunbelievable. When we finally reachedPunsan Bay, after looking around Bamaga (notvery impressive)we relaxed. The welcome atthis camping ground was incredible, as wewere the first two wheel drive vehicle thatseason. The first evening was spent aroundthe table in the open air restaurant. We metEileen and Kevin, who later on would crossour paths again. They are from Tasmania andtravel often across Aussieland.

Page 18: Wagensville FEB 05

18

The first day saw us boarding a littleboat to take us to Thursday Island. Wenever realised how many islands arescattered all over the Torres Strait up nearCape York. We passed quite a few beforewe reached Thursday Island. The people onthe Island look more like the Fijian race. It isa small Island, lots of hotels and very hot. After a tour on Nelson's Bus around theisland, we ended up in a hotel for a bite toeat and a few drinks. The return trip and apretty rough sea made us all look a littlepale.

The next day we were off to the north-ernmost tip of the continent. All very excit-ing - through some deep sand, ditches fullof water - beautiful rainforest and finallyafter walking over some rocks we made it tothe Top. Very exciting! All the other visitorscame by 4X4s of course.

We are on our way back - over the corru-gations towards the Jardine, but once onthe other side we started enjoying drivingagain. The car is going terrific. This kind ofdriving took us back ten years when wecompeted in Desert Rallies. Great fun! Thetraffic was light until we approached a righthand corner, this Toyota came flying aroundit - on our side of the road, but not for long.He saw us and either he got such a shockwhen he saw the Beetle or he was justinexperienced, but he just slammed on thebrakes. What a moment of wonder whenyou watch a big car with a big bullbar cometowards you, and you have nowhere to go!Goodbye! His car came to a halt just half ameter in front of us. Bulldust everywhere!!When he backed up to pass us he lookedmighty relieved. We felt a little dazed for awhile there.

Our destination that day was ShelbourneBay and to stay overnight at the campingarea at the Nixon Homestead. Peter had metIrene and Dal a few years before on hismotorbike trip and wanted me to see howthey live. We got there just before Sundownand would you believe it, our friends Kevinand Eileen had the same idea . It was niceto see them there. The Nixons, Irene and

Dal, claimed that they recognised Peterstraight off, and greeted us like old friends.

Irene and Dal live in a kind of shack withone side all open - no windows. They are anenterprising couple, she bakes the mostbeautiful bread and uses the fruit treesaround the place to make lovely jam. Nowonder we lived for the next week on breadand jam - yum!! The living area was incredi-bly clean and quite cosy - very impressive. It was a delight to get to know these twopeople living alone in the wilderness forover thirty years. Sadly, they are livingunder threat of eviction, as their farm isunder an aboriginal land rights claim.

Kevin offered to take us the next day tothe white sand dunes of Shelbourne Bay -60km one way through untouched, lovelybush land, across little waterways and thenthe white, sandy mountains. It looked likesnow. We had a lovely, full day and afterstaying another night at the Nixons we setoff early in the direction of Hann River, leaving the main road to make our waytowards the Gulf of Carpentaria. It was adelight to drive along this hardly used road.

We found the main road was gettingbusier and rougher - too many 4X4`s. Whocan blame them, it is a lovely country and tobe honest, this particular part of Australiashould be travelled by Four Wheel Drive! Alittle road through interesting mountainareas, lots of farms and little traffic took usto the mining town of Chillagoe (Marble andCoal)where we stayed the night. Our nexttarget were the Lava Tubes we heard somuch about.

Mt.Surprise is on the No.1 Highwaybetween Cairns and Normanton and theLava Tubes are just near there. They nowbelong to the National Parks and are worth-while seeing. These Tubes millions of yearsago, when small surrounding volcanoeserupted and the lava spread all over thecountryside, finding its way into a riverbedwhere the outside cooled down, leaving acrust and the hot lava inside continuedflowing - leaving a !6 km long tunnel. Thevegetation, below where some of the roof

collapsed, is amazing! We are on our way to Normanton and the

first stop there is at the famous Pink Pub fora beer. We decided to stay the night inKarumba on the GuIf of Carpenteria. Wefeasted on fresh prawns and watched themost spectacular sunset! The trip next tookus to Burketown. On the way we stopped atthe last camp site of Burke and Wills, beforethey turned back and eventually perished.

Escott Lodge was our next stop, a lovelyold homestead with beautiful green grass tocamp on and near the great Nicholson River,as rugged as they come. There was mychance to finally see crocodiles. We hired aboat and spent all morning up and down theriver but only saw a handful of little onessunning themselves. I had to be satisfiedwith the big two metre freshwater crocodilein captivity at the Lodge!

We were now looking forward to LawnHill, a destination not well known. The roadtook us across the Leichhardt River (withlittle water)and interesting little billabongs. You travel along the barren countryside andevery so often you cross river gullies withthe most beautiful tropical vegetation, veryintriguing - they made up for the longstretches of emptiness. At Gregory Downswe turned off towards Lawn Hill - approxi-mately. 100km off the beaten track. To campat Lawn Hill you have to book in advance,so we stayed at Adels Grove, 10km beforeLawn Hill. It is a lovely camping area withits own picturesque billabong to swim in,and good service.

We spent the whole of the next day atLawn Hill, hired a canoe early in themorning and set off into the gorge, which I

could only describe as " heaven". What anoasis in a never-never land! This was thehighlight of our trip. The time we spentexploring the gorge and its interesting siteswas wonderful. We stayed one more nightin Adels Grove and set out towards Mt. Isathrough Riversleigh Station where theyfound, and are still finding, fossils of animalsgoing back millions of years, to the timeswhen the country was covered with tropicalrainforest. You would not believe it, lookingat the dry countryside now. We reached Mt.Isa after driving over a long stretch of rocky, nasty roads. We made time to inspect themines and visited the Irish Club for a nightout.

I said my goodbyes to Peter the next dayto fly back to Melbourne. He took the Beetlestraight down the middle, through Boulia,Bedourie, Birdsville, then via Cordillo Downsto Innamincka, Tibboburra, etc.He covered 10,000 km on the trip,6,000 km on dirt roads, 4,000kmwe shared. It was a holiday we'llnever forget.

MotorsportNews

> Jon Edsell - VWCV Motorsport and Group 5

We have been able to secure a venue for theVWCV Inc. ‘Have a Go” Motorsport day. Itwill be held at the Toyota car Club Grounds,McGrath Rd Werribee, on Sunday, 3rd April2005. It will be for VWCV members only, and we are aiming to keep the cost to aminimum. We will be holding Motorkhanaand Khanacross events on the day. We aimto have as many of the regular VWCVMotorsport competitors available as we canto give the ‘first timers’ as much informationand encouragement as you can absorb. Toenter the event you will require cotton typebased clothing (Jeans, shirt, etc) coveringyour body from neck to wrist to ankles, androbust footwear (runners are OK, but barefeet, thongs and sandals are not). Thevehicle must have a fire extinguishersecurely mounted in the vehicle, if you wantto have a go at the Khanacross type events. Also, you will learn some of the basicofficialling skills, so you might want to helpus out in the future at the VWCV organisedGroup 5 events. More details will be givenin the next magazine, or you could contactme if you require more info.

After this event we will have 2 or 3VWCV only Khanacrosses during the rest ofthe year. I am currently trying to securedates and venues, so I will keep youinformed.

Also, when trying to obtain the Rob RoyHillclimb for an event, I found out that theyhave a ‘Challenge of Clubs’ event. Thisyear it will be on June 19th, and subject tocommittee approval, I will endeavour to getan invite to this event.

The other thing I will be doing is organ-ising a Motorsport Spectator event to a MudTrial, or Observed Section Trial. The TrialsSeries start in May, and go to October, so I

will examine our calender, and find a timewhen there is not much on and we can goalong and have a look. The cars used inthis form of motorsport are unique, with acapacity limit of 1500cc, extremely smallturning circle, and large suspension travel. The VW aircooled engine is fairly popular inthis form of motorsport. So keep and eye outfor this event.
