Throughout the continued economic uncertainty last year, the Westminster Canterbury Richmond community responded with expressions of compassion and caring, showing resilience and generosity of spirit.

Donors enable Westminster Canterbury Foundation to fulfill Westminster Canterbury’s lifetime commitment to help residents with true financial need. Last year, 114 residents received Fellowship support, but all who live here benefit from the security provided by Fellowship.

Despite the trend toward decreased giving experienced by many non-profits, the $1,241,000 contributed to the Annual Fellowship Fund exceeded the 2010 goal, testament to donors’ faith in Westminster Canterbury’s stewardship and service.

Many cultural and creative amenities unique to the Westminster Canterbury lifestyle are funded by Westminster Canterbury Foundation. Residents enjoyed exceptional performing arts programs in the Sara Belle November Theater and were inspired by fine arts workshops, classes, lectures and exhibitions in the H. Scott November

Gallery. The new Dakim brain fitness software program promoted cognitive stimulation.

The three-year, $22.5 million renovation and expansion of Mary Morton Parsons Health Center and Pavilion, completed in June, enhance residents’ high-quality lifestyle with bright new accommodations and a household model of care.

Outstanding customer service, known as TWCW, “The Westminster Canterbury Way,” is a defining characteristic of Westminster Canterbury. A task force identified and made recommendations that will yield a new training curriculum for all staff.

Westminster Canterbury earned two national awards, unprecedented dual honors for a Virginia retirement community: the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) 2010 Excellence in the Workplace Award and the 2011 NuStep Pinnacle Award for senior adult whole-person wellness in spirit, mind and body.

Westminster Canterbury celebrated a thirty-fifth anniversary with nearly 900 residents at year end, financially among the strongest continuing care retirement communities. The long tradition of sustainability and stewardship provides reassurance that residents Live Life Well.

Fiscal 2010 was another successful year for Westminster Canterbury. Due to the strong 2010 operating results, the bond covenant was exceeded. The waiting list remains strong for all areas of independent and assisted living. Westminster Canterbury was able to maintain its BBB- bond rating. Standard & Poor’s reported a positive outlook due to Westminster Canterbury’s favorable market position, improving operating performance and overall balance sheet strength.

Westminster Canterbury Foundation continues to be a vital element of our mission to provide financial support for those whose resources do not fully cover their housing and health care expenses. By the end of fiscal 2010, a total of 114 residents were able to live at Westminster Canterbury because of the financial assistance they received from the Foundation’s Fellowship Program. The 2010 actuarial valuation indicated that Westminster Canterbury’s obligation to provide future services to residents did not result in a liability as of September 30, 2010.

OCCUPANCY RATES As of September 30, 2010, the community includes 533 independent living apartments and houses, 97 assisted living apartments, 72 memory support apartments and 158 health center apartments for a total of 860. Occupancy at September 30, 2010, for independent living residences was 92.7% and for the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center was 87.8%. Occupancy at September 30, 2010, for assisted living residences was 89.9%. Assisted living consists of Avalon, Pavilion, Monticello and The Gables. In June 2010, renovations of the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center were completed.

REVENUES Total revenue from resident services, including other income, increased by 2% driven by rate increases of 2.5% as well as by higher revenues from ancillary services.

EXPENSESExpenses increased 2.2% over the prior year. This increase was due to higher resident care expenses and general and administrative costs. Westminster Canterbury continues to diligently manage resources by focusing on careful stewardship.

WESTMINSTER CANTERBURY MANAGEMENT CORPORATION ! SUBSIDIARIES Financial Summary

Mary Morton Parsons Challenge Grant The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation has awarded Westminster Canterbury a challenge grant commitment of $100,000. To receive the grant funding, Westminster Canterbury Foundation has until November 2011 to raise $200,000 in gift commitments for needed technology and renovations to the Rice Assembly “Town Hall” gathering areas adjacent to the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center.

The Child Development Center is approved to serve 144 children from ages six weeks to twelve years old. The center offers infant, toddler, preschool and school-age programs. The Center is licensed by Virginia Department of Social Services and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

CREATIVE CURRICULUM The Child Development Center utilizes the Creative Curriculum© for early childhood instruction and the Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum as its assessment tool. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEThe Child Development Center receives additional funding from Westminster Canterbury Foundation. Endowments provide financial assistance for children’s participation in various programs such as music class and summer camp.

Westminster Canterbury employees receive a 45% tuition discount for their children. Staff members with demonstrated financial need receive an additional 20% discount for each child enrolled, made possible by contributions to the Westminster Canterbury Foundation Child Development Financial Aid Endowment. In 2010, 17 children of staff members qualified to receive financial assistance for tuition through Foundation funding. INCLUSION PROGRAMThe Child Development Center serves 15 children with special needs. Westminster Canterbury’s model inclusion program is funded entirely by charitable gifts. The Center was the first private preschool invited to join IPOP (Inclusive Placement Opportunities for Preschoolers) through a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University. Westminster Canterbury’s Child Development Center is among the few in the Richmond area to mainstream children with special needs with their typically developing peers. As children with special needs transition from the Center to school, Child Development Center staff may assist in the creation of an Individualized Education Plan or participate in the transition education planning team. As a result of the Center’s involvement in the transition process, families of children with special needs benefit from the continuation of established relationships with professionals, including local therapists, specialty private schools and VCU.

INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMIntergenerational activities between Westminster Canterbury residents and children at the Center provide regular, beneficial interactions. Intergenerational programming sets standards and outlines weekly appropriate interactive

activities that appeal to both generations: events and projects such as the annual Fall Festival, Harvest Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, the popular “puppy therapy” and informal play time where residents and children work puzzles, string beads, create crafts or read stories to each other. Participation in these intergenerational programs fosters active learning and socialization for both children and residents.

RECREATIONAL PROGRAMSFamilies of children enrolled at the Center enjoy a variety of events and activities throughout the program year including Summer Camp, Field Day, Sweetheart Dance, Mother’s Day Tea, Father’s Day Breakfast and Annual Holiday Program. Children also have opportunities to participate in the many extracurricular activities offered at the Child Development Center such as art lessons, ballet and tap dance lessons, water play and music lessons.

Community Support and OutreachIn 2010, Westminster Canterbury supported many community non-profit organizations and participated in numerous activities that benefited the Greater Richmond Community. Additionally, we opened our doors, serving as an internship site for students.

Westminster Canterbury’s contributions included in-kind donations and staff volunteer time as well as event sponsorship funds.

It has been an honor to serve you as president of the Association this past year and I have really enjoyed it. Your friendly greetings and encouragement whenever I have met you, in the hall or elsewhere, have been quite an inspiration. I tried to list all of the people and groups whom I would like to acknowledge individually for their work. I gave up! So many did so much! The annual reports from each of the 22 resident committees reflect the hard work done by more than 400 committee volunteers. Many more residents work outside of the committees.

As I came into office, the “Buddy System” was first offered. This initiative had been developed and spearheaded by a resident and approved for our use. It can be of great emergency help to any of us in making a variety of personal plans, including being out of town. The plan is now in use by more than 150 residents.

An objective of this administration was to continue earlier studies of potential improvements in Dining. One visible and pleasing result for residents and employees is the change of dress by our waitstaff from drab black and blue to an attractive black and white. Other ideas will continue to be introduced as we move along with our new executive chef.

Perhaps the most significant change brought about during this administration involved the simplification of what was the Healthcare Visitation Committee, a group that began service in 1976. Many hundreds of residents have visited friends and family over the years. Changes and simplification were quite successful. All residents are encouraged to continue visiting as we do now. Volunteer Resource Development can furnish training and assistance to those who may wish to get information.

Great credit for the changes goes to all current visitors, especially the folks who have been visiting for many years. Mary Morton Parsons Health Center staff consider the changes all a “win-win” operation.

As I look around our beautiful campus, I think of how much has transpired since Holt Souder and Ed Givens gave birth to the Westminster Canterbury idea. Management people since have taken up this idea, nurtured it, and made it grow. Many thanks go to Don Lecky and his staff who continue the process. This is truly a home of which we can be proud.

WESTMINSTER CANTERBURY FOUNDATION Statement of Activities

Summarized information from 2010 Audit.

In July 1975, Westminster Canterbury opened its doors on Westbrook Avenue. Since that time many donors have given faithfully to Foundation causes, demonstrating their commitment to our vision: “Improving the lives of those we serve every day.”

TWCW Hall of FameWestminster Canterbury’s highest sta0 honor is awarded to full-time employees who exemplify “The Westminster Canterbury Way.” The Brendan Hayes Appreciation Award recognizes part-time employees for service excellence. 2010 honorees, from top left: Brendan Hayes Appreciation Award: Maxine McDu1e, Housekeeping Aide A. TWCW Hall of Fame Award: Giselle Janiszewski, Administrative Assistant, Resident Services; Sandra Carter, C.N.A., Mary Morton Parsons Health Center; Vanessa Perry, Administrative Assistant, Pastoral Care and Annette Branch, Buyer, Materials Management.

Excellence In The Workplace AwardWestminster Canterbury earned the American Association of Homes for the Aging 2010 Excellence in the Workplace Award in recognition of a workplace culture and environment that promotes recruitment, retention and development of sta0. This is the first time that AAHSA (now LeadingAge) has recognized a Virginia retirement community.

Sensational Staff Celebration was given by J. Harwood Cochrane in appreciation of the excellent care he received during a stay in the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center. The three-day celebration also recognized the successful completion of the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center and Pavilion construction projects.

In 2010, 114 residents received financial aid through Westminster Canterbury Foundation’s Fellowship Program. Last fiscal year, Westminster Canterbury Fellowship recipients received $3.3 million in aid.

Fellowship can provide financial assistance with entrance fees, housing and meals, as well as supplemental insurance or medical expenses not covered by insurance. As with all residents, Fellowship recipients have access to a team of qualified specialists who assist in the areas of physical and mental health and wellness.

Approximately 50% of Fellowship recipients reside in assisted living or in the Mary Morton Parsons Health Center. These are residents who would not be able to live independently in the external community. Westminster Canterbury provides them a safe, active environment and the security of knowing that they will not have to choose between paying vital housing, food or medication expenses.

No part of any resident fees supports Fellowship. The Fellowship Program is funded entirely through gifts to the Annual Fellowship Fund and income from Fellowship endowments. Since the program’s inception in 1975, generous donors have helped give $47 million to provide assistance to 462 residents with documented financial need. Contributions to the 2010 Annual Fellowship Fund totaled $1,241,921, all of which went directly to fund resident aid.

Because of the Fellowship Program, Westminster Canterbury can fulfill its pledge of lifetime security to all residents—no resident will ever be asked to leave due to an inability to pay.

35th AnniversaryResidents and sta0 celebrated “A Knight to Remember,” a fairy tale themed costume party throughout campus. The storybook cake reads:

“In the beautiful fields of Henrico, there arose the enchanted kingdom of Westminster Canterbury. Word of all the kingdom had to o0er spread far and wide. Many gracious ladies and gallant gentlemen ventured forth to begin life anew in its grand halls. Some had been wise scholars and cultured artists of great acclaim. Others had been noble princes and princesses of law and medicine. However, all were learned professors of life who told of incredible adventures which eager ears yearned to hear. For thirty-five summers, our fair ladies and valiant men of Westminster Canterbury have shared many tales. Now is but one for all to hear.”

A couple of paid-up insurance policies no longer seemed essential to a loyal resident donor. So he dusted those documents off and gave them to Westminster Canterbury Foundation. Within six weeks his gift made a difference in:

HELPING NEIGHBORS IN NEED2FELLOWSHIP. Part of this gift provided vital funds in a challenging economy for the Annual Fellowship Fund. Fellowship helps provide grants for housing, supplemental insurance and uncovered medical–related expenses to residents with significant financial need.

MEETING A HEALTH SERVICES CHALLENGE. Some of the gift is helping to meet the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation Challenge Match. Westminster Canterbury has until November 2011 to raise $200,000 to receive a $100,000 match for health services technology and renovations of the Rice Assembly Room.

MAKING THE POOL FRIENDLIER TO RESIDENTS ! THE ENVIRONMENT. This gift, among others, supported the transformation of the pool purification system from chemical chlorine to an environmentally friendly, extremely healthy salt water system.

At one time, life insurance was a priority for this resident to protect his young family. Decades later, since his wife had died and his children are grown and independent, the policies’ usefulness had waned.

Now, the resident has the pleasure of seeing his gift benefit his community and neighbors. Also, after a qualified insurance appraisal, he received a 2010 charitable income tax

deduction on his donated policies. We are grateful that he thought of a fresh, charitable use for those old insurance policies!

If you are interested in making a current or planned gift of insurance, please call Kelly Merricks at 804.264.6702

or Ginny Purcell at 804.264.6202.

FOR FELLOWSHIP CREATED BY

Gifts to endowments are a way for donors to perpetuate their charitable support of Westminster Canterbury. Some endowments are created by planned gifts, such as bequests in a will. Others have been created by living donors to support specific programs or the general charitable needs of Westminster Canterbury.

With each endowment gift, Westminster Canterbury Foundation invests the principal. As careful stewards of endowments, the Trustees of the Foundation establish a conservative percentage of

the endowment’s value to be made available for use each year.

Named endowments are established by donors or the board who want to honor or remember loved ones. Every named endowment totals $100,000 or more. Some have been built over time through continued donations; others were established with a single gift.

The Foundation establishes endowments to support programs in perpetuity and gratefully receives gifts of any size toward these.

Rededication In celebration of the 35th anniversary year in 2010, Westminster Canterbury was rededicated to its mission with a Festival Service of Rededication.

“In reality, this will be an empty house unless there exists love and concern which cause those who reside and labor here to dedicate themselve to providing fellowship, enlightenment, activity, motivation, recreation, physical care and, above all, spiritual enrichment and Christian compassion.”

A Lenten JourneyThe annual collection of devotions contains personal stories of

faith written by Westminster Canterbury residents and sta0. More than 5,500 of the free booklets are distributed each year and serve as a familiar resource for local Episcopal and Presbyterian churches.

Remarks by J. Edwin Givens, Westminster Canterbury’s first board chair, at the dedication of the foundation stone on May 5, 1974.

The First Presbyterian Church Men’s Supper Group has been involved at Westminster Canterbury since 1986 when the members were just young men in a church group looking for a service activity. They began having suppers with men in assisted living. They discovered Westminster Canterbury Richmond was the best fit. With the fellowship and male camaraderie, the volunteers had the most fun here, felt most appreciated here and felt they received “higher returns.” The group has met here every month for 25 years.

The group focuses on history and memories. From residents’ World War II experiences to current events, the group constantly shares stories. Residents reminisce about their lives, careers, hobbies, sports and families. “The guys are great and funny. They look after each other and have good attitudes.” Once someone asked a particular resident “if he thought he was a rocket scientist.” Turned out, the resident actually had been a rocket scientist! They enjoy jokes and often say wisdom comes with old age, sometimes old age comes by itself.

Over the years, the number of residents in the group has fluctuated anywhere from six to fifteen and their ages have ranged from 70’s to 90’s. The group toasts those who have passed on, sometimes with cranberry juice, sometimes with wine. They laugh when they can’t tell the difference between the two.

The First Presbyterian Church volunteers agree, “It’s a joy to be among the residents” and “It simply gives me a lift.” The group “clearly gives one perspective on life in general.” The volunteers feel they are the primary beneficiaries of their past 25 years of visits.
