KING’S news

Summarising a King’s year can seem perilously hubristic – there seem to be so many triumphs to tell everyone about. However, these achievements really belong to the boys and girls, and their teachers, and it is good for this newsletter to celebrate all that they have done.

In November, the Sunday Times placed King’s sixth best school of any type in its table based on A level, IB and GCSE results: only two other schools teaching boys (MCS and Westminster) feature in the top ten. This year, another fi fty-four upper sixth formers have won Oxford and Cambridge offers, with over 90% of pupils gaining offers from their fi rst choice universities.

The 1st XV fi nished sixth in the Daily Mail trophy, and our rugby players this term reached the fi nals of the Rosslyn Park 7s. Max Mondelli proved himself one of the fastest young sprinters in the UK, while the King’s girls have been on form in both hockey and netball, able to fi eld A, B, C and even D teams from just eighty girls.

Drama, music, outdoor pursuits and our partnership work all remain central to the ethos of King’s, as we hope to show here. And the school has been warmly praised for placing pastoral care on the national agenda. Our True Grit conference on pastoral support gained national press and TV coverage.

YOUNG DRIVER EDUCATION AT KING’SKing’s fourth form took part in a hands-on programme run by Goodyear in October to raise awareness of road safety. The boys met Josie Pearson MBE, who won gold in the discus in the 2012 Paralympic Games with a world record distance. Josie was paralysed in a car accident when she was just 19.

Each pupil got to sit behind the wheel of a car with a trained instructor who taught them the basics of driving in a controlled zone on the hard play area.

KING’S INSPIRATIONAL WOMAN TAKES ON A CHALLENGE King’s geography and games teacher, Clarissa Goodwin, decided in 2012 she would take on a new and different challenge every month over the course of a year to honour her late father and also to help raise funds for charity. It was no surprise that Miss Goodwin was nominated for the Daily Mail Inspirational Women of the Year award. Clarissa has now created the website www.takeonachallenge.co.uk. Miss Goodwin’s aim is to ‘pay it forward’ and help inspire young girls and women to get active.

Languages, English, Classics and Oriental Studies at both universities. In the last three years, King’s sixth formers have gained over 150 Oxford and Cambridge offers and over 93% have gained their fi rst choice university place.

SCHOOLS IN HARMONYThe King’s partnerships programme has continued to attract the attention of government and politicians. We were delighted to welcome Zac Goldsmith MP, whose constituency includes several of the academies and maintained schools we support. The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Krystal Miller, also visited King’s to see our work with schools in her borough.

Over 120 students attended the annual launch of our aspirations project in February, enjoying a range of subjects

that included Maths, Chinese, Philosophy and Ancient Greek. 48 students in Year 8 benefi ted from our six-week gifted and talented science course, and over 150 GCSE students from our partner schools attended top-up classes taught by our staff every Thursday afternoon in the spring term.

Our annual showcase for joint art, music and drama projects, the open doors evening, took place on the last day of the spring term. In January, the Coombe Girls’ School/King’s partnerships choir was invited to sing at the opening of the Department for Education conference on independent-state school partnerships at Church House, Westminster.

Both teams then went on to defeat Wimbledon College at the renowned Allianz arena in November and the 1st XV fi nished off 2013 in 6th place in the Daily Mail trophy.

TIMON OF ATHENSIn March the lower fi fth Drama students performed a lucid and pacy abridgement of Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens.

A WIDER STAGEHenry Calcutt (4F) was part of the recently released blockbuster Thor: The Dark World. He fi lmed for three days, on location in Surrey, playing the role of one of Vostagg’s children. Henry said, “My favourite part of Thor was being involved in the making of a fi lm. It was amazing to see the camera crew and all the other people that come together to create a Hollywood blockbuster. I was there for 3 nights and got to hang out with Chris Hemsworth and Ray Stevenson, which was amazing!”

Slightly closer to home, Hal Henderson has enjoyed success in the National Theatre’s Emil and the Detectives.

IB LITERATURE AND PERFORMANCEThe upper sixth IB Literature and Performance pupils presented their examination performances in February: four dramatic responses to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Entirely devised, directed and acted by the pupils themselves, the pieces were characterised by dizzying levels of energy and invention.

FOURTH FORM MONOLOGUE COMPETITIONThe fi nal of the fourth form monologue competition took place in November. The runner-up was Edward Nicolle for his moving piece about a father who lost his family on 9/11, and the winner was Ralph Covill for his rendition of Knock, Knock, a poem by Daniel Beaty. Our adjudicator was actress and theatre practitioner Kate Maravan, who gave an excellent speech herself, telling those commendable boys who had not won: “welcome to the world of acting…”

KING’S HOUSE PLAY FESTIVALThe fi fth King’s house play festival involved more than 150 pupils. This year, the task of adjudication fell to actor, communication trainer and King’s parent Charlie Simpson, who praised the impressive levels of creativity and intelligence on display in each of the six pieces.

DEVELOPING EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE IN SCHOOLSThe King’s ‘True Grit’ conference brought together some of the UK’s top researchers and practitioners in the fi elds of pedagogy, neuroscience and adolescent psychology to discuss ways in which emotional resilience could be better taught in schools. Over 200 delegates from many prominent independent HMC schools attended.

The conference was featured in most broadsheet papers and BBC News London ran a special report. Andrew Halls was also live on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour to discuss the stresses put upon teenagers in the 21st century.

Highlights of the day included a demand from Professor Byron (pictured right) that the ISI insists on ‘outstanding’ pastoral care in all independent schools and that children are encouraged to take risks; Professor Russell Foster’s conclusions on the value of sleep in emotional development; and Professor Blakemore’s neurological insights on the ‘mysteries of the teenage brain.’

THE NEW CLASSROOM BLOCKWith building work starting in July 2014, the new classroom block will include a multi-purpose hall for 150 people plus six classrooms, a conference room, lift, and circulation space to resolve the access issues in the old science building.

Below is a CGI of what it should look like from the 1st XV rugby fi eld.

HARD PLAY AND QUAD A design team led by Landscape Perspective is working on this project, which has a planned start date of July this year and will be completed by January 2015. Our plans are for a major re-landscaping of the area to the south of the Great Hall which will include the Quad, the small courtyards around this central space and extend to the playing fi elds. The area will undergo a major tree planting programme involving distinctive varieties with striking colours and shapes to complement the purpose of each area.

MUSIC SCHOOL Hopkins, the architects of Glyndebourne Opera House and the Olympic Velodrome, are working on designs for the Music School which aims include a concert hall for 200 people, seventeen music practice rooms, four music classrooms, associated offi ces and a reception foyer.

MUSIC SCHOOLHopkins, the architects of Glyndebourne Opera House and the Olympic Velodrome, are working on designs for the Music School which aims include a concert hall for 200 people, seventeen music practice rooms, four music classrooms, associated offi ces and a reception foyer.
