President’s Message

With our sailing seasonrapidly winding down, Ifound myself strugglingaloud for a topic of interest

for my next president’s letter when mydaughter, Emily, said, “Why don’t youwrite about what sailors do in the win-ter?” At first I was doubtful about howinteresting that would be. For most of us,the late fall and winter represent the “off-season”– a time to rest up and catch up.It is usually a time for other activitiesaway from sailing or a time just to hiber-nate and recharge our batteries. Thesequieter winter months also provideample opportunity for us to maintain ourboats and improve our sailing skills.There is a lot of new “go-fast” equipmentto consider. There are boat shows andseminars to attend, along with countlesssailing books and magazines to read. Butthen I thought about how the late fall andwinter “off-season” provides us with thegreatest opportunity to maintain andbuild our fleets. There is much that wecan do, and should do, during the wintermonths to cultivate the growth and devel-opment of our fleets for the coming sail-ing season.

I recently heard a story about a handi-capped child named Kyle, who was aboutto run in the race of his life at the SpecialOlympics. As the runners gathered onthe track, they were quite nervous andfidgety. Kyle stood at the starting line try-ing to relax with his head tilted back forseveral minutes, staring blankly into thesky. The other competitors on the trackand spectators in the stands eventuallytook notice of Kyle, and they, too, lookedup into the sky searching for what Kylesaw. Kyle was the first to look down,and he immediately made eye contactwith the starter, who simultaneouslypulled the trigger of his gun to start therace. Kyle sprang forward in his unevengait, concentrating only on breathing andmaking his legs move faster. But just

should have more social functions. Afleet party with good food and drinkduring the winter months will do muchto bring the members of the fleet andtheir families together, particularlynew or prospective members. Don’tforget to invite your crew.

• Personal contact is key. New fleetmembers do not just appear; you haveto invite them to become part of yourfleet, often several times.

• Fall and winter frostbiting. On somebeautiful cooler days, lots of short-course races and warm soup afterwardsadd much to the sailing season for cur-rent and prospective fleet members.Tell your absent fleet members aboutwhat they are missing.

• Take care of fleet business. Hold elec-tions, assign duties, discuss the upcom-ing season, collect dues, communicateand publish a schedule well inadvance. Establish a plan to maintainand build fleet membership. Utilizethe FSSA Web site to promote events.Stay in regular contact with your dis-trict governor.

• Update and distribute your fleet roster.Keep track of all of the boats in yourarea.

• Get together as a fleet to attend a boatshow, a racing seminar, or a rules sem-inar. Sponsor a rigging and tuning dayat the beginning of the sailing season.Try to include lunch or dinner together.

• Consider traveling together to regattasin warmer locations.

None of these are new or original ideas,but why wait until next June or July tothink about building your fleet. Now isthe time to ramp up, not to slow down! O

before reaching the finish line, Kyle real-ized that he was way out in front, allalone. He hit the brakes and turned backtowards the other runners, who were nowin full stride. “Come on, you guys,” Kyle

yelled, waving to his friends and cheer-ing them on as each one passed him andthen crossed the finish line. After a spec-tacular start, Kyle finally jumped overthe finish line dead last but more excit-ed than ever. For Kyle, it was not win-ning but just being in the race andrunning with friends that mattered.

What would Flying Scot sailing bewithout our fleets of friends, family, andcompetitors? It probably wouldn’t exist.We need each other, and we count oneach other, to sustain the enjoyment andfulfillment that we derive from sailing.So what are some of the things we can doduring the “off-season” to build anddevelop our fleets?

The Life JacketThe life jacket is designed to save your

life. With 22 years of service in the Navyand Air Force as a pilot, I am very famil-iar with the life jacket. It was a requireditem in all aircraft, and pilots wore itunder the parachute. When a Navy piloton an aircraft carrier bailed out, as his feethit the water he slipped out of his para-chute harness and inflated his life jacket.A helicopter then picked him up. He waseasy to find in the water because of the

color of the life jacket. It was alwaysbright yellow.

Consider the following situations: 1. You have capsized and are in the

water, or 2. You have fallen overboard and are

in the water. A powerboat is approach-ing you. Will the person operating thepowerboat see youmore easily ifyou are wearing abright yellow,orange, or red lifejacket, or will hesee you betterin a dark-col-ored life jack-et that blendsin with thecolor of thewater? Also, if you have capsized andare in the water with a storm blowingand a search boat is looking for you,which color jacket would be seen more

easily? During four years in the AirRescue Service, I have searched forpeople in the water in both life jacketsand life rafts. Flying at 500 feet, it isdifficult to see a yellow life jacket, butit would be impossible to see a dark-colored life jacket. If you care about your life and the lives

of your family, please do not buy a dark-colored life jacket.

I would like to leave you with an oldIrish blessing: “As you slide down thebanister of life, may all the splinters be inthe right direction!”

National Championship Committee

Do you know what the NationalChampionship Committeedoes? Do they just surface atthe NAC each year, only to fade

away until the next NAC? Well, here’ssome insight into what we do to makeyour sailing experience more enjoyable atFSSA-sanctioned events.

Under the constitution and bylaws, theNational Championship Committee (NCC)has jurisdiction over all sanctioned eventsin FSSA. That includes the NAC, Wife-Husband, Junior Championship, Women’sChampionship, Seniors Championship,Atlantic Coast Championship, and soon-to-be Masters Championship. It overseesthe maintenance and updating of FSSAstandard sailing instructions and the stan-dard notice of race. It recommends toregatta organizers potential judges andrace officers who are certified by US SAIL-ING. It requires that at least one judgeand the principal race officer (PRO) becertified, and it reviews resumes from eachprior to confirming an appointment.

Your committee is made up of knowl-edgeable people who have taken an inter-est in helping regatta organizers plan anevent that will be successful and withinthe bounds of the rules. It pays particularattention to sailing instructions and racenotices, and it sets the stage for eligibilityand ground rules of competition. Itattempts to keep the rules of competitionfrom conflicting with the Racing Rules ofSailing.

The committee has brought a number ofissues before the board of governors that itthinks will make the FSSA events betterand safer for the sailors. Recently the NCCput forth a motion to the board of gover-nors to adopt a set of “ConditionGuidelines” for race committees. It wasunanimously adopted by the executivecommittee and provides guidelines, notrules, that will guide race committee deci-sions as to whether to start or abandon arace. Because we are involving peoplewho may not be familiar with the class,many have asked if we have a document

once again that conducting regattas inareas where there are overhead powerlines that pose a threat is unacceptable.The executive committee and board havereaffirmed the existing policy of not run-ning events in those areas where this couldbe a problem. This policy will be insert-ed into our bylaws where it won’t be for-gotten in the future.

It is the committee’s commitment thathas brought much-improved racing andrace administration to the FSSA. Thosewho have participated are to be congratu-lated and thanked for their interest, time,and hard work to make your sailing/racingexperience a positive one. The membersof your National ChampionshipCommittee are Barbara Griffin, DanGoldberg, Larry Taggart, Tom Lawton,Randy Williams, and Hans Noordanus.Among them are two certified regionalrace officers, two certified judges, and oneretired judge. All of these people are ful-ly engaged in our effort to bring quality rac-ing to the FSSA. O

that provides this guidance. The NCC,upon searching other class policies, foundthat many classes do have such a guidelinein place. We do now. It can be read on the FSSA Web site in the race manage-ment section.

The NCC has another proposal beforethe measurement committee for refine-ment and endorsement. This proposalcomes about as a result of rescue difficul-ties people have in retrieving capsizedboats. We are proposing that all boats berequired to have bow flotation and drainports in order to compete in sanctionedevents. This policy will be phased in overa few years until all boats racing in anyFlying Scot event are so equipped. It willfirst have to be voted upon by your board.The first event in which this will bemandatory will be the Midwinters in 2007,followed by the NAC next summer. Itmakes sense.

1. Rules: The regatta will be governed by the current rules as defined inThe Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

2. Eligibility: The regatta is open to Active, Life, Junior, Club, and FamilyMembers. The FSSA Constitution defines each category. Entrants mayselect either the Championship or Challenger Division, except that anypast North American or Midwinter Championship Division or ChallengerDivision winner shall sail in the Championship Division.

3. Registration: Eligible boats may enter by mail using the form availableon www.spyc.org, or at the regatta site beginning Sunday, March 4 at1600. Registration, including selecting either the Championship orChallenger Division, must be completed by Monday, March 5 at 1200.Sailing Instructions will be available at registration.

4. Measurement: Sails may be selectively measured and all boats may bechecked for required safety equipment. Other measurements may bemade at the discretion of the Measurement Committee.

5. Bow Bags and Transom Ports: The FSSA and the SPYC strongly rec-ommend that boats participating in this event be equipped with bowbags and transom ports. At the midwinter meeting of the FSSA Boardof Governors, an amendment to the Class Rules will be proposed tomake this equipment mandatory (for future events).

6. VHF Policy: The FSSA rules permit carrying a VHF radio aboard at alltimes. Competitors may monitor the Race Committee working channel.However, VHF radios shall not be used while racing.

7. Fees: The entry fee is $225 per boat. This includes: the Sunday“Cheeseburgers in Paradise” party (hosted by FSSA), dinners for twopeople on Tuesday and Thursday, all racing, trophies and the Floridasales tax. Current US SAILING members may deduct $25 from the entryfee (include your US SAILING membership number on the entry form).Entries received and paid by February 16 may deduct $25 from theentry fee. Thus the early entry fee for a US SAILING member is $175.

Additional dinner tickets and regatta shirts may be ordered on theentry form, and will also be available for purchase at registration (athigher cost). Shirts ordered on site will be shipped to the purchaser afterthe event.

8. Schedule: The SPYC is closed on Monday. "SPSC" is the St.Petersburg Sailing Center.

Michigan-Ontario District

This year’s edition of the MichiganHot Scot, the last event for theseason in the Michigan-OntarioDistrict, saw 17 skippers and

their crews give it one more try beforeputting their boats away for the winter.Things got started on Friday afternoon,thanks to the persistence (actually nagging)of Forest Rogers, who was able to convinceToledo native and former Devils Yacht Clubmember Bill Draheim of Gus Sails to comeup from Dallas and the Corinthian YachtClub to put on a tuning seminar. Bill’s first-ever off-lake regatta was a Sears Cup eventat our club when he was a youngster. Hewas genuinely excited to be back up northand at our club.

The seminar was quite enlightening to allwho participated. About 40 minutes werespent on shore going over the rigging; theremainder of the time, about two hours,was spent on the water in our boats withBill riding up and coaching each of us whilewe ran through a series of practice races.Everyone was able to take away very valu-able advice and apply it right away. Having time to reflect about all the infor-mation that was presented, I think we couldeasily have called this seminar “Dispellingthe Myth of the Boom Vang and Cross-Sheeting.” What we learned was this: layoff both. As you can imagine, this wasquite shocking to a vangaholic like myselfwho loves to strap her on at the first sniff ofwind. The vang on the Scot is different fromother boats in that it does not run to the bot-tom of the mast. Instead, as we all know, itruns to the tabernacle, which makes it func-tion more in a backstay capacity and havemore of an effect on the jib luff and forestay.Bill emphasized that the mainsail will nat-urally twist in most conditions, so little tono vang is needed when sailing on a beatunless the wind conditions get very unruly.He pointed out that downwind is the timeto use more vang to keep the top batten

In a huge upset, Team USA beatTeam Canada in the traditional“Paddle a Scot” race at the bienni-al Canadian Championship heldAugust 19–20, 2006, at Stony Lake,

Ontario. Each crew consisted of eightpaddlers, one coxswain, and one personon the tiller on a Flying Scot. This racehas been held every year since the incep-tion of the Canadian Championship regat-ta in 1986, and Team Canada had won

almost every previous race by exhibitingsuperior skill, experience, and teamwork.

Team USA captain Dan Gelman fromPittsburgh, PA, an experienced DragonBoat paddler, was determined to turn thetide this year. He recruited a team of eagerpaddlers and coached them on propertechnique and team unity. After an evenstart, Team USA gradually inched aheadand won the race in a thrilling finish to astanding ovation. Team Canada, althoughsurprised at the outcome, showed greatsportsmanship and congratulated thewinners.

There was no upset in the actual sail-ing regatta. Previous winner TamMatthews took first place in the 22-boat

Proving again thatthe Flying Scot is a family boat, ChrisDanilek, sailing with his wife, Linda, andtheir two young sons, finished second.Rounding out the top five were RobinCollins, Dan Goldberg, and DaveJacobsen. Incidentally, Dave is the onlyAmerican who has sailed in everyCanadian Championship. Bill Ross (withwife, Diane) came all the way from NorthCarolina to serve as principal race officerand provided excellent race managementthroughout the five-race series. He wasassisted by Forest Rogers, Diane Ross,Mike Cork, Kevin Smith, and Ron Hauth.

For many years, the CanadianChampionship has been organized bySusie Hauth, brother Doug Smith, andmother, Sherrill Smith. Organizing thisregatta is more difficult than most,because of the need to arrange for hous-ing billets for all visiting sailors and crew,and to tow boats from the marina to theyacht club through rock-infested waters.

FSSA Regatta Update

Anewly sanctioned nationalregatta! This regatta was offi-cially established by the FSSAexecutive committee at its

meeting at the Midwinter Championshipin St. Petersburg in March, 2006.

The North American MastersChampionship will incorporate the best of two very successful regattas, theSilver Piper Regatta and the SeniorsChampionship formerly held in con-junction with the North AmericanChampionship. This new championshipis geared toward mature Scot sailors at alllevels of experience!

After an extensive survey of seniorsailors (those participating in the SilverPiper and the NACs) by Hans Noordanus,

Championship will be conducted like allother sanctioned events. Because of thesmaller, select size of the group, howev-er, more venues should open up. In addi-tion to continuing the camaraderie andgood competition of the Silver Piper, thisnew format will avoid the last-minuteconfusion at the NACs when splitting thecompetitors into two divisions.

FSSA is fortunate to have so manyhighly competitive, experienced, and tal-ented sailors eligible for this regatta. Welook forward to the opportunity for all tocompete with each other! O

The SilverPiper Regatta, first conceived of and runby Bill Ewing and being held for the fifthtime this year, has been a fun, challeng-ing, and well-run regatta. Eligibility hasbeen for skippers 60 years of age and over,with no age limit for the crew. TheSeniors Championship required that theskipper be 60 years of age and that thecombined ages of skipper and one crewequal 120 years. To be eligible for thenew Masters Championship, the skippermust be 60 and the combined ages of theskipper and one crew must equal 120.

On the last weekend in July,with almost perfect weather--almost, in that it was 90°F – theMichigan-Ontario District

Championship returned to beautiful GullLake outside of Richland, Michigan, afteran absence of 12 years (or maybe 20 years,depending on whom you talked to).Hosted by Fleet 15 based at the Gull LakeYacht Club, a turnout of 19 Flying Scotswere treated with the best wind Gull Lakehas seen – the “old timers” said “ever”–during a regatta!

This District Championship was sixyears in the making. Forest Rogers, thepast district governor, began his quest tohave Fleet 15 host the Districts onceagain. I resisted! Finally, Michael Ehnis,the current governor, asked once again inNovember of 2005. I brought it to theattention of the board of the Gull LakeYacht Club and they said, “Do it!! We’llhelp!!” Letters went out to the fleet mem-bers and I threw our hat into the ring,“We’ll do it!”

I formed my committee with BillPfund, Max Doolittle, John Kittredge, andDavid and Gail Thompson, and away wewent! Michael and I went back and forthon dates before settling on the last week-end in July. This would lie between theUS Nationals and the Canadian Nationalsand wouldn’t overwhelm Scot sailorswith back-to-back championships on dif-ferent coasts. It would be a challenge forthe Gull Lake race committee, with thisbeing the first of four championshipsbeing held on the lake on succeedingweekends. The 210 Mid-Westerns, 210Nationals, and the Snipe NorthAmericans all followed the Scot Districts.

Now, it’s Friday night, 7/28. The plan-ning meetings and e-mails are over and“crisis management” takes over. Howwell did we plan? The first boats arriveand with Judy Maier, Gail Thompson,and my wife, Nancy, at the registrationdesk, the process flows pretty well. We

are ready for Saturday! I sleep for the firsttime in three nights!

Saturday morning. Sun is up. Alreadypushing 70° F and not a whole lotta wind!Oh, well, race committee problem now!Now a steady stream of people arrive.Registration is going well. The welcomecommittee is directing traffic in the yard,and the hoist boss is plopping them in thewater without too many problems. Thereis so much going on that it’s hard to know where to be, but it seems to be goingwell…except for the wind and temperature!

My crew, Jim Klein, has the boat at thedock, so it’s time to switch gears and dosome sailing! We have a short skippers’meeting where Alec Borden, the PRO,goes over some details: two fleets, 14 inthe Championship and 5 in theChallenger, grab your lunches and water,we will be doing three races, first start at11 a.m., hope to be done by 6 p.m., go get’em! As the RC boat pulls away from thedock, Alec commands “Let there bewind!”…and the wind fills in!! Course isset and PROMPTLY at 1055 the first warn-ing shot is fired. Wind is 10 to 12

the first race in a “Katrina” boat he had justfinished rebuilding. He said later, with abig smile, “I think it’s a keeper!”

We had planned on two hour races. Firstwas done in 40 minutes for the Champs, 58for Challs; second in 42 minutes; third in1hr 17 min. Wind was still reported at 10mph for the third race, but the temp wasnow in the 90s. So we had completedthree races by 3 p.m. With this wind, I wassaying “keep going,” but with the heat,three was enough!! Time for cold beer andshade!! Going into the locker room thisday, Paul Lee had the lead; Frosty Rogers,Steve Last, and Bill Pfund were tied for sec-ond; Jim Grant and Kent Davis were still inthe hunt.

My daughter, Aimee, had spent the dayas photographer. After the races, we lookedat the pictures. Paul Lee started a discus-sion on spinnaker pole position. We“rewound” the pictures and reviewedthem in light of his comments. We didn’tplan on social activities, so the eveningwas going to be low-keyed… food, drink,sleep, and cool off!

Sunday dawned with indications of

mph….but that temp is now well into the80s…but, oh, that wind! 11am, start!

It’s hard to report on how the races wentfrom the Challenger fleet. Besides, I’m inmy first Scot championship with the pastGull Lake Yacht Club champion as crew;I’ve got my work cut out for me! I wasthrilled when Jim agreed to crew with me!We rigged the spinnaker for the first timeon this boat and spent the previous weekworking out the kinks. My goal is to stayconsistent, good starts, quit going out to therhumb line. Now for the Challenger start…

We sailed the best races ever! We wereconsistent, great starts, only occasionallyout to rhumb, and I learned a bunch aboutthe boat. Jim kept a feel for the boat andmade adjustments. We talked trim, tactics,wind shifts--including the proverbial “Tackon the headers” that kept us in the hunt.We got frustrated with our finishes,although consistent, but we started lookingat the little things. We were the first at thecheck-in boat, first to the windward mark(in the second race, I think), and no onewas doing a “horizon job” on us.

The Championship fleet seemed to bekeeping it close also. Forest Rogers won

Line DiametersWe also measured the diamelines to really see how “big”were. This is noted as the mm... behind the inch/mm graphThe manufacturers do a goodbuilding consistent sizes, but hard to split the sizing hairs odia line. Our goal here is to not do a lineline comparision, but to give yoyou can use for your applicationdon’t get caught up in thinking oof stretch, instead think elastic eltion... i.e. each time you load youline to the poundage of X, it willmove that much.

Shown here is our "Punisher," a120,000lb Steel I beam with a 20,000lb hydraulic cylinder (like the one ona garbage truck) hooked to an electrichydraulic pump and a few digital loadcells. We use this to pull, test andbreak the lines and rigging we sell.

What we came away with was howconsistent the performance of eachline was. Once we pre-and-cycleloaded the lines, the 5 measuremenwere remakably the same.

Permanent Elongation, a concept to bunderstood. In these samples we pre-loaded to 600 then did pulls to 300from zero. Each time to 300 the linestretched to bascally the same overalllength. That is cool, however, if wehad gone to 500 in between two 300efforts the line would have becomelonger, permanently elongating. Thinkabout this and call if you have ques-tions. There are conclusions to be had.

This past fall I had the son of one ofmy long time customers call. He saidhe is sailing his Dad’s 505 and askedme when I was going to do somebench testing on small diameter lines.I said: “It is on my list,.. now, it is atthe top... what are you looking for?”

bit thicker then normal and made the

core a bit thinner then normal. We at

Layline have been seeing for years

that the jacket was the weak link on

Polypro lines but now New England

has addressed the issue by beefing up

the jacket while still offering all the

performance that you could want for

your dinghy and small keel boat lines.

I have been running the Flightline for

spin sheets on Sonar's all last season

and I personally think there is no

equal, Super Light while still offering

fantastic performance.

Michigan-Ontario District

The2006 Crystal Ball was held one month later than usual so that top-notch race manager Steve Rajkovich could onceagain serve in that position. What a difference one month makes! Instead of sweating like there is no tomorrow,

this year we were greeted with cloudy skies, a nice northeast breeze, and cool temperatures. Thankfully the club had the fire-place going to keep everyone warm.

The cooler temperatures didn’t seem to slow down Bill Pfund from Gull Lake Yacht Club as he masterfully won the event,getting four bullets in the five-race series. Second place went to Frank Gerry, who traveled all the way from Wisconsin to par-ticipate. Third place went to Jim Davis from Portage Yacht Club.

A great time was had by all in one of the most popular regattas in the Michigan-Ontario District. O

What does a monkey have to dowith sailing? Keep reading!The Sandy Douglass Regatta

is held every July at Deep Creek Lake,near the home of the Flying Scot. Thisregatta has an unusual tradition: theboat that finishes one place out of theactual trophies wins a special perpetualtrophy, which is an anatomically cor-rect male monkey! Therefore it must begiven to the winner holding out his orher hand in the correct strategic posi-tion. The winner is then required to addsomething (such as an item of clothing)to the monkey and bring it back the fol-lowing year. The monkey first appearedwhen the Sandy Douglass Regatta washeld at the Rudder Club in Jacksonville,Florida, many years ago. He then madehis way to Lake Norman, when the regat-ta was moved to North Carolina, andthen to his final destination at DeepCreek in 1994 because the regatta wasfinally moved to Sandy’s home of manyyears. Many notable sailors have wonthe monkey at Deep Creek, includingJohn Meredith, Pat Glazier, Don Griffin,and Melanie Dunham.

see if there was any traffic to windward.Just about the time we got head to wind,I noticed (to my horror) another boat,about one boatlength to windward andabout one boatlength behind us! I imme-diately tried to un-tack, but the jib hadalready backed so the boat came to a deadstop! By the time we got going again, wewatched helplessly as every boat in con-tention for the monkey went by us. Thenit occurred to me – perhaps our finishwould be so bad that we would end upone position behind the monkey!

Alas, that was not to be. After thestandings were posted, I finally got upthe nerve to see the final outcome. Sureenough, we were solidly in 8th place –the monkey again! So I had to come upwith a new plan to avoid the monkey.

At the awards ceremony, I was pre-sented with the monkey by JeannetteDodd, commodore of the Deep CreekYacht Club at Turkey Neck. So I imme-diately stated that winning the monkeywas truly a team effort, and that I couldnot have done it without my great crew,Mark and Maria, and that they richlydeserved the monkey, who would enjoybeing prominently displayed in theirhouse. I then proudly awarded them themonkey! Being the great sports and greatpeople they are, they willingly (I think)accepted the monkey. Hopefully theywill enjoy him as much as I did the firsttime around. At the very least, it willguarantee that they will come back toDeep Creek and sail with me next year,because they have to add something tohim and bring him back!

There is a happy ending to this story.Maria told me that the monkey is verycontent in his new home, sitting on thepiano all day (and night), and that he getsalong just fine with their dog and cats. O

I had the misfortune (excuse me, goodluck) of winning the monkey back in1997. My wife Pam found some little sail-ing socks to add to the monkey. I dutiful-ly returned him the following year,hoping never to have him visit our houseagain. However, after the Saturday racesof the 2006 regatta held July 29-30, I foundmyself in 8th place. Since the first sevenboats would receive trophies, I had a ten-tative lead on the monkey! So I roundedup my crew, my good friends Mark andMaria Benner, and explained to them thatwe could NOT win the monkey. We need-ed to have a really good race on Sunday,as there were three or four boats just aheadof us, all separated by one point.

I was encouraged by Sunday morn-ing’s stiff breeze, ideal for our three-upboat. We had a good start and were nearthe leaders most of the race (except DaveNeff, who did a “horizon job” on thefleet). We were safely ahead of all theboats we had to beat to avoid the monkey.About 100 yards from the finish line, thewind suddenly lightened and we got abig header. So I decided to tack.Unfortunately, I never bothered to look to

pated in the seminar was how simplyeverything was presented, just like theFlying Scot itself. Bill eloquently pointedout that the Scot is not like a car, where youset everything and calibrate the engine to acertain point. Things do change and we doneed to tweak a bit but not to the point ofbeing too “technical” at the expense offocusing on the more important things likeboat handling and catching the right shift.Well, now, isn’t that a reality check?!

As far as the regatta, there were two verydistinctly different days of competition.First there was Saturday with predictedwinds of 12 to 14, but somehow the weath-er prognosticators were way off target; lightair ruled the day. This was especially trueof race 2, where the wind evaporated rightbefore our eyes on the first upwind leg.Those who banged the left corner upwindgot the last of the good stuff for some 20minutes and made out quite well.

To my surprise, in this race I found Billand Forest (5235) floating along with medownwind on the right side (where thewind had been going on leg 1). This could

After dinner at the club and watchingthe Ohio State – Penn State game (to thedelight of Bill Pfund, 5193, OSU grad), mostof the group continued their social time atthe lakeside home of Todd and SuzanneMoore (2397). A bonfire and plenty of liq-uid refreshments made for a very funevening. Dan O’Haver (4529) spent thetime presenting rules quizzes to chief judgeClark Chapin. Another group, includingAndy Ingall (4691), was watching theDetroit Tigers game, while a big contingentof Michigan State fans, including BJ andTina Johnson (4351) and Steve Last andSteve Rajkovich (4979), were glued to asecond TV watching the game against NotreDame. Too bad all of us assumed thatMSU’s 17-point halftime lead was enoughto call it a day, as the Irish amazingly cameback and won, much to our surprise whenwe heard the news the next morning.

Sunday brought a totally different animal

Actually it was the latter, and itwas quite humbling watching everyone elsemake out as the wind went back to the oth-er side as we fell further behind. Our enter-tainment during this float-athon was a planelanding just past the racing area. The raceended mercifully with the club’s own Brianand Suzy Hawkins (3288) winning the race(I’m certain their take on these events wouldbe much different from the author’s).

It was decided to cancel race 3 (sincemirror-like conditions were to no one’s lik-ing) and head for shore and do what every-one in the district likes best: eat and drink.The social hour included a small debriefingby Bill, in which he said to forget about race2. It was also at this time that we had thechanging of the guard as Jim Davis (784)was presented as the new district governor.There also was a lot of discussion about thestandings as the light air turned things top-sy-turvy, with our guest from Dallas in

light wind and 80°. Two races to go andwe will have all five races in! Competitorswere getting their second cup of beverage,wondering. Once again, the RC gods com-manded, “Let there be wind!” It tookanother hour, but the wind didcome…ever so lightly! Fourth race start-ed at 10:10 a.m. with 4 mph of wind.Forty minutes later, the Champs finished.Challengers finished 47 minutes aftertheir start.

The fifth race was started at 11:25 a.m.RC didn’t record the wind speed, butclouds became a factor. Wind was stilllight and the thought of finishing 2 1/2laps – well, it might take a while!However, the RC gods, with the help ofonshore weather radar, wisely shortenedto 1 1/2. Paul Lee, Jim Grant, Steve Last,Keith Wagner, and Frosty Rogers led theChamp fleet to the finish. John Kittredge,Max Doolittle, and Bruce Korstange ledthe Challengers to the fifth finish. I wasbringing up the rear of the Challengerfleet, and the clouds were getting blackand taking on weird straight-line forms.

Thoughts of the recent Nationals disas-ter were still fresh in my mind as the boatsheaded for the recovery area. A few boatswere still waiting for the lift when thefirst wind hit. The lift crew and boat crewsmoved quickly to get those boats on theirtrailers and secured. When the first rainbegan, only a few were still securing theirboats. All headed for the Quarterdeck area

of the country club to escape the rain andto wonder…how bad is this going to be?

Everyone was safe, so now how aboutthe race results and awards. OK, OK, foodand drink first!! Final tally from the com-puter has Paul Lee, Frosty Rogers, andJim Grant as 1-2-3 for the Championshipfleet and John Kittredge, Bruce Korstange,and Max Doolittle as 1-2-3 for theChallengers. Paul Lee and crew took homethe District trophy.

Once again, as if on cue, the stormpassed as the award ceremony finished.The competitors are making plans for thenext event – the Canadian Nationals,Crystal Ball at Crystal Sailing Club in ear-ly September, and/or the Hot Scot atPortage Lake in late September – and say-ing their good-byes. People filter out of theQuarterdeck, boats disappear from theparking area. Soon, I’m left by myself inthe Quarterdeck wondering what the heckjust happened on this last weekend ofJuly at beautiful Gull Lake near Richland,Michigan.

As a final note, I’d like to thank AimeeLechota, Bill English, and Ela Sliwerskafor their photos; Tom VanderMolen forhis organizational mentorship; TomBelco, the “Lift Master”; the GLYC Starfleet for their assistance in clearing therecovery area ahead of the storm; and theGLYC membership volunteers withoutwhom this event couldn’t have happened!Thanks. in terms of the wind. It was time to “strapit on” as the wind continuously built from12 to 14 and puffy to a steady 18 to 20 withgusts of 25 to 28. Of the three races held,the last one proved to be by far the mostentertaining. Three boats opted not to race,and three took mercy right after the start.That left 11 competitors to take on the verychallenging conditions.

The downwind legs provided plenty offireworks, and were both downright exhil-arating and scary, especially if the spinnakerwas utilized. In all my years of sailing aScot, I have never gone faster. My crewcould only let out a loud hoot as the boat gotup on a plane and nearly death-rolled. Idetermined that this was where we were touse all that vang Bill had talked about twodays earlier. If you weren’t doing this, or youwere sailing too deep or on too much of areach, you were very likely to find yourselftaking a late summer swim, like DanO’Haver (4529), Jim Grant (5602), and SkipSchmidt (647). What a way to end the year!

The post-regatta social included hot piz-za and many tales of the last race. Congrat-ulations to Bill Draheim and Forest Rogersfor winning this year’s Hot Scot. O
