Fun at the 2021 Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade

Grand Marshall Miriam Gaskins with Dennis Permenter

This year’s golf cart parade had 60 golf carts and 15 bicycles all decorated in a patriotic theme. It was a beautiful site to see all the red, white and blue. Miriam Gaskins, our Oceanside Village Property Manager, was our Grand Marshall. This year we had a golf cart as the lead and it was all decorated in red, white and blue and driven by Rick Power accompanied by Carol Botkins.

The weather was perfect and a one-time special of buy one sheet get one free brought out a great turnout. Everyone had a great time trying to make a winning poker hand and visiting with fellow villagers. We hope to have other events in the comingmonths. -

Memorial ServiceOn Saturday, August 28th, a memorial service was held on the Oceanside Village ball field. While candles were distributed and illuminated, music was provided by Gary McCormick.

The Reverend Jeff Wood read the names of 36 friends, relatives, and loved ones with ties to Oceanside Village, while a bell was tolled to note each of their passings by Milt Cutway. These are people who we had lost during the pandemic.

The evening ended with those in attendance singing a beautiful, moving rendition of “Amazing Grace”.

The Oceanside Village Golf Group

The OSV Golf Group enjoyed their annual picnic for players and their spouses on September 8th in the Activities Center. The menu included burgers, dogs and brats with delicious sides prepared by the spouses (or in some cases, by the golfers!).

Miriam Gaskins was a special guest who was awarded a plaque of appreciation for the long time support by Miriam and OSV. The late Carl Blake initiated the picnic tradition several years ago.

by Josie HarperJune Folluo: One Remarkable Life

Get ready to have your preconceived notions about 90-year-olds shattered when you meet June Folluo. Unlike many in her age category, she’s attractive, has the tall stature and figure of a teenager, and is sharp as a tack. She greets us with a smile as we sit down in her home on Kingfisher, ready to hear her life story. And what a story it is.

It begins when she met Chuck Folluo in 1963. At first, she says, she had trouble pronouncing his name. So when they went out to dinner, he would write it down on a napkin and slowly pronounce it. At that time Chuck was an Army Captain. June didn’t know anything about the various Army ranks, but she quickly learned as Chuck rose from Captain to Major to Lt. Colonel and finally to full Colonel. For June, it’s her life as the wife of a career Army officer that’s most significant. In the ten years Chuck was on short assignments, the couple lived all over the globe, traveling throughout Europe and Asia. They were in Germany, Austria, Budapest,Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Egypt (Cairo), Korea, Morocco (Casablanca), and Japan. “We took boat rides on the Danube and a wagon ride drawn by gypsies in Budapest. All moves were good,” she says—a comment that reflects her smiling, positive attitude. Chuck also served in Viet Nam. June even

was a need. She is proudest of her volunteer work with the Arlington Ladies. It’s a group of women who attend funerals of Army men being buried in Arlington National Cemetery to ensure that not a one will be buried without someone in attendance. When Chuck died in March of 2016, he was buried there with full military honors.

has a picture of the couple taken with President Truman when they attended a White House dinner.

But one of June’s favorite memories was a trip the couple later took to Paris to celebrate their 50thwedding anniversary.

When Chuck and his fellow officers moved up in rank, the custom was to have a celebratory dinner. Conceding that she was not noted for her culinary skills, June called on her mother to provide the meal. After her mother died, June turned to a close friend for help. She admitted that long cocktail hours made the dinners taste a lot better.

As an Army wife, June volunteered wherever there

Page 11: Volume 4 October 2021 Fun for Fall - oceansidevillage.com

11

After their children were in school, June also worked full time as a receptionist in the office of USA To-day and part time as a ticket agent for US Air.

When the couple was home in Fairfax, Virginia, they often took off on a Thursday and flew to New York for a long weekend of fun. There they saw plays (like Cats), took carriage rides through Cen-tral Park, and ate at the Tavern on the Green, one of June’s favorite restaurants.

Both June and Chuck were only children, so their immediate family is small. But they have three daughters: Candy Watts, Connie Luptak, and Cin-dy Folluo. Connie and Cindy have no children, but Candy has a son and daughter. Candy’s daughter has a daughter whose son hopes to follow in his great granddad’s military footsteps by becoming a Marine. Connie lives in Shelby, NC; Candy lives inVirginia; and Cindy lives in Virginia with her moth-er. All three girls keep close tabs on their mother.

June’s time is now spent between Fairfax, Virgin-ia, and Oceanside Village. Her Fairfax home is a five bedroom house large enough for a baby grand piano, plus it has an outdoor swimming pool. In the garage you’ll find a 1915 Model-T Ford and a

vintage Miata. Cindy looks after things when her mother is away.

So how did June and Chuck find Oceanside Vil-lage? It was because they were friends with four families who vacationed here. On one trip in 2004 they met Laura Bunts, an OSV real estate agent, and before they knew it they had bought a home. Chuck chose the one on Kingfisher because it was near the beach. Some of those first friends are still June’s good friends and neighbors. She mentions Rick and Joyce Whitehead and Fred and Diane Thompson, in particular. When June flies down from Virginia, one of her neighbors picks her up from the airport and then takes her back when she goes home. They also look after her house while she is away. When June is here in OSV she enjoys walk-ing on the beach. And she rides through the vil-lage on a bright yellow three-wheel bike that Can-dy gave her for Mother’s Day. June’s pleasure in physical activity dates back to her childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, where she often roller skated in an indoor rink and was a high school drum majorette.

Unfortunately, June recently fell when she was in Virginia and broke two ribs. But that hasn’t seemed to slow her down. She still enjoys riding her bike, participating in chair exercises, playing Bunco, and meeting friends for dinner.

Indeed, June Folluo is a remarkable woman; one who has lived a truly remarkable life.

Oceanside Village Wildlife and Waterfowl UpdateOceanside Village Wildlife and Waterfowl UpdateIt has been a very busy spring and summer season! Lots of new babies arriving, along with lots of happy vacationers. Glad to see everyone out and about, waving, smiling, walking, jogging, biking, playing, and heading to our beautiful beach!!!

It’s always such a tremendous joy watching the nesting process begin, then spotting eggs in a nest from a distance, and, then, watching the hatchlings and their first swims with mom and dad! It’s a miracle to witness every season. I find incredible joy driving around waiting and watching for each little miracle to hatch and take his/her first swim! Yes, to say I am passionate about these creatures, is an understatement. I love, adore, and try to protect each and every one of them.

Hi, my name is Michele Timmons. I am a full time owner here in Oceanside Village. I am proud to be a part of this incredible neighborhood, with so many volunteers, friends, concerned homeowners, neigh-borhood watch, activities, the beach, the pools, and so much more! I rescue wildlife and waterfowl crea-tures here in OSV, and along the eastern side of Horry and Georgetown Counties.

If an animal is in need of care, I will rescue them and deliver them to Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CWRC). Kimberly Cerimele is the Executive Director, and Rehabber of CWRC. Kimberly’s con-tact information is available at the bottom of this letter. I am ONLY a rescue volunteer. I do this because I care about the animals. I receive no money for my time involved in rescue. I do, accept donations of old towels, because they are essential in transport and comfort of animal rescues.

Some of the MANY animals that have been rescued in Oceanside Village just this spring/summer season include the following: multiple, multiple swans, egrets, mallards, anhinga, cormorants, herons, a baby seagull, multiple geese, a mourning dove, infant squirrels, a turtle, a wood stork and a cooper hawk. IF humans were more cautious and careful, NONE of these animals would have required rescue and reha-bilitation (except the cooper hawk who flew into a glass door). Several did not survive. Most did survive and, after extensive AND expensive rehabilitation; most have been released back into Oceanside Village. Typical injuries include, hit by vehicles, (golf carts included), several swans were harmed, harassed and abused by vacationing teens, including large hard rocks thrown at them, and the rest of ALL involved

Page 13: Volume 4 October 2021 Fun for Fall - oceansidevillage.com

13

injuries come from hooks, fishing line and lures. The photos above include a cooper hawk, which flew into a glass door, a cormorant with a treble hook stuck in his foot, and, a swan with a fishing hook entwined in her neck.

Turtles: Turtles: I have found multiple turtles this year covered in paint! First of all, they are not ‘toys’, should not be netted out by children, and should NEVER be ‘painted’ with nail polish or any type of paint. Turtles live, breathe, and feel no different than humans. The paint can be absorbed through their shells, causing them illness. Additionally, their shells help camouflage them, blocks UVB/A rays, and helps them live safely in their natural habitat. Please educate your visitors, and grandchildren, and renters to treat turtles kindly, as they are not toys.

Ways to help reduce algae, protect waterfowl and wildlife:Ways to help reduce algae, protect waterfowl and wildlife:Educate people fishing; ask them to make sure they take a moment to clean up their lines, hooks and lures. Additionally, if you find those items, or plastic, or trash, do the communi-ty a favor, save maintenance’s time, and just pick it up and toss in the many provided trash facilities.DO NOT FEED BREAD!!!! Bread is not good or healthy for the animals or the waters! Should you choose to feed; cracked corn, Mazuri waterfowl food, frozen or canned peas or corn are healthy, safer options. Please understand, if you live on or near water, the animals have just as much a home here as you, and they should not be mistreated, harassed or harmed deliberately.

I can be reached at any hour for a rescue, if you see an injured animal, at 703-297-6070. Or, you may call OSV security, the main office, or my director. I will do all I can to save an injured animal and get him/her into the loving care and the rehabber arms of my director, Kimberly Cerimele, Executive Director/Rehabber, Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. 919-605-6185, Myrtle Beach, SC. www.cwrcwildlife.org FB – Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

Did you know?

South Strand Lions, part of Lions International, serves the local community through service proj-ects and fundraising activities to provide financial support for local agencies as well. South StrandLions recently received the District 32-C Award for Best Hands on Service Projects, made possible by the support of Oceanside Village residents. Con-tinuing service activities include food collection and volunteer hours for Shepherd of the Sea Food Bank, Christmas stockings for nursing home resi-dents, Spring Tide Cleanup in Murrells Inlet, Blue Star Mothers Wreath Campaign for veterans’ grave sites, support for Leader Dogs and much more.

Lions have supported sight/vision services since the founding of Lionism in 1917. South StrandLions conduct vision screenings in local elemen-tary schools (pending COVID protocols) and pur-chase eye exams and glasses for qualified applicants in need.

Planning for 2021-22 has begun with continued emphasis on vision and new challenges from LionsInternational to support pediatric cancer patients and children with diabetes. We are researching ways to support Happy Wheels at MUSC Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Happy Wheels provides a weekly cart tour through the children’s cancer cen-ter to provide toys, games, puzzles for the children to select, enjoy and take home. Camp Air Waves and Seven Seas is a Myrtle Beach camp for diabetic or asthmatic kids to enjoy organized fun and edu-cational activities in a safe environment.

In August, hundreds of school supplies for Help-4Kids were collected in OSV.
