arBoretum guiDe SpotligHtTexas live Oak Quercus fusiformisThe Texas live oak is the most well known tree in the Hill Country for its massive spreading limbs and unique structure. It has incredibly strong wood, still used today for many wood products. Historically, its uses included food, tannin, ink and lumber for building ships. Live oaks were the first nationally protected tree as they were threatened during the late 1700’s by the wooden ship building industry. Live oaks can grow 30’- 50’ in height and spread 50’ or greater. Live oaks are a drought-tolerant tree; preferring part shade to full sun and are a good species for wildlife. the Founders’ Oak in Landa Park is a texas Live Oak.The live oak tree is susceptible to oak wilt disease; prune only in the hottest and coldest months avoiding February through June; paint all wounds immediately. Visit www.texasoakwilt.org for more information.

An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. in 2007, the arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.
