1 Every August we like to do a special issue of the OCWA Newsletter featuring the Fine Art Woodworking Show at the Orange County Fair. We will have lots of pictures, and the re- sults from the competition. We might even have some deep-fried Twinkies, or maybe not. I would like to thank all of our OCWA members who participated in this year s festivities as volunteer docents, demonstrators, and information gurus. You did a fabulous job. Secondly, I would like to congratulate everyone who entered pieces into the show. It takes a lot of cour- age to subject your work to the judgment of others, and as far as I am concerned you are all winners. I would also like to thank Barbara Thompson, Dan Stephens, Sarah Breucop of the Orange County Fair staff, and all of their helpers for doing such a fantastic job, and for the hospitality theyve shown all of our OCWA members. This show couldnt happen without them. 20%, WOW! Most people involved with organized groups will tell you that about ten per cent of the members of most groups are the ones who do most of the work, which I have found to be pretty accurate, so when we fig- ured out this years percentages for the participation of the OCWA membership in this year s show we were quite pleased to find that more than twenty per cent of our membership participated. It really is a tes- timony to the dedication of our OCWA members, and I doff my chapeau to you. Every August we like to do a special issue of the OCWA Newsletter featuring the Fine Art Woodworking Show at the Orange County Fair. We will have lots of pictures, and the re-sults from the competition. We might even have some deep-fried Twinkies, or maybe not.

I would like to thank all of our OCWA members who participated in this year’s festivities as volunteer docents, demonstrators, and information gurus. You did a fabulous job.

Secondly, I would like to congratulate everyone who entered pieces into the show. It takes a lot of cour-age to subject your work to the judgment of others, and as far as I am concerned you are all winners.

I would also like to thank Barbara Thompson, Dan Stephens, Sarah Breucop of the Orange County Fair staff, and all of their helpers for doing such a fantastic job, and for the hospitality they’ve shown all of our OCWA members. This show couldn’t happen without them.

20%, WOW!

Most people involved with organized groups will tell you that about ten per cent of the members of most groups are the ones who do most of the work, which I have found to be pretty accurate, so when we fig-ured out this year’s percentages for the participation of the OCWA membership in this year’s show we were quite pleased to find that more than twenty per cent of our membership participated. It really is a tes-timony to the dedication of our OCWA members, and I doff my chapeau to you.

Impact

Sometimes it is hard to tell what impact on people our booth at the Fair has until you hear stories like the one Len Musgrave shared at the Turners meeting about turning some tops for two Autistic boys. Their family was so appreciative of the time Len took in engaging them with his top spiel that after they had left the Grandfather of the boys came back to personally thank Len, and to tell him that was most focused he’d ever seen the boys. Nice job Len.

I was doing my usual goblet demo, and this six year old boy was really fascinated by what I was doing, and stayed for the whole demo, so after I was done I told him that the goblet was his, and he said “this is the best day of my life”. I assured him that he was going to have many better days ahead of him, but it did

bring a tear to the Ol’ Prez’s eye.

There are lots of stories we don’t get to hear, but our members touch so many lives with our Christmas Toy Program, and our Pens for the Military program that it makes me very proud to be your trusted servant. Thank you for all you do for others.

Hello Woodworkers! Though we are not meeting this August of 2014, we still wanted to keep you up to date on what you can expect in the ways of pro-grams and speakers for Sept. 4th. Lon Schleining makes a return to the OCWA and he will have in tow a brand new workbench that he uses daily. This is a debut of this particular bench, not the Fine Woodworking version that he brought to the meeting a few of years ago. In addition to being published over 50 times in Fine Woodworking, Lon has writ-ten the definitive book on workbenches along with books on chests and wood bending. You won’t want to miss this!

On a side note, I have been contacted by a Garden Grove city ad-vocate to help save a Ca. Pepper tree that is older than the city it-self. This HUGE burled pepper tree will be taken down on July 24th. Some of the wood will be placed in the driveway of the advo-cate’s house just down the street on Stanford Ave. He welcomes anyone to come take some of the wood as long as they make one

or more items in return. This item can be turned, or he also specified the need for crosses to be donated to any number of the many surrounding churches. Anything would really be appreciated. Ideally, one or more items will be donated to the Garden Grove Historical Society to go on display at the Historical Socie-ty Ranch in Garden Grove. Please contact Josh McIntosh at 714-240-2472 for more information.

See you in September and enjoy the summer heat.

Regards,

Greg Madrigal

scheduled yearly maintenance of the Tustin Senior Center.

It’s time to brush up on your Jeopardy questions. Remember that your response has to be in the form of a question. For example; there won’t be an OCWA meeting at this place. Answer; what is the Tustin Senior Center?

Now, it’s time to let David Tilson do his magic for the Fair! Bring it on David!

Several weeks ago I took my visiting Brother in Law and my two granddaughters to the Lyon Air Museum at John Wayne airport. I have visited it on many times to see the various collections of Gen-eral William Lyon. On this visit we had the honor of having Sgt. George Emerson, a World War II B-17 Tail Gunner and POW, as our docent and guide. It was an honor to be in the presence of this brave American hero and have him describe the aircraft and cars in the museum and his last mission. He was only 19 years old and on his 17th mission as a tail gunner in a B-17 when another B-17 was hit and collided with his aircraft and tore his aircraft in half. As the tail was spinning to the ground he was flung out and somehow his parachute opened. The remaining part of the aircraft crashed with the entire rest of the crew of 11 being killed. He was taken prisoner and held until the war ended. I will never forget the two hours we spent with George and my Granddaughters were really impressed when they got to see where the tail gunner is located in a B-17. He sat on a bicycle seat with no seat belt and he could only hold on the handles of the 50 caliber gun in front of him. Check out the web site: Lyonairmuseum.org The Lyon Museum has a flyable collection of a B17,

B25, B26, C47, DC3, 01 Bird dog and a newly acquired AT6. I see them many times on the approach to landing from my house. William Lyon also has a private collection of over 150 classic cars that are rotated in and out from collection. He has one of the larg-est collections of Duisenbergs in the world (16) and many Pack-ard’s, Lincolns and other classics. If you want to go an have George be your docent call ahead a week or so to get his sched-ule to be there. He is 93 and in a wheel chair so don’t delay. Lyon Museum is located at 19300 Ike Jones Road, Santa Ana, 92707. Phone 714-212-4585. Take 55 south, get off at Baker, Turn left at Baker and go towards the airport. When you get to Airway Avenue cross it straight across and this is now Ike Jones Road; it winds around and dead ends at the Museum. Don’t wor-ry about the “Road Closed” sign, it has been there for twenty years. It is $12 for adults, $6 for children, seniors and Vets $9. - Len Musgrave

At the March Toy Workshop we had 38 people there. Ed Smet had his usual 40 or so Keepsake boxes to assemble and prepare for the next step. Allen had many legs, paws and wheels for his pull toy that needed sanding and spray-ing. Again, this month we had five members of the Honors Society from Orange High School helping us to sand and spray. Mag Musgrave, Debbie and Carol were busy mak-ing dolls for the cradles. Mag Musgrave gives Doug Turner 16 doll kits per meeting and Marie Turner completes them at home

each month and turns them in. I have added a new Tuff Shed and I now have an additional 120 square feet to store the larger pieces of toy wood and an enclosed area to keep work in progress. We are also happy that Kathy Koukl has joined in with us and I’m sure her husband Jim is looking over her shoulder from above and is very proud that she is going to continue the family’s woodworking fun. That is Kathy on the drill press drilling holes in some pull toy parts.

The March toy workshop will be April 5th at Bill Rogers’s house from 9 am to noon.

To date we have had 1850 finished pens turned in and 1400 have been distributed to mili-tary personnel. Five members have made our 100 Club (100 pens or more turned in); Rob-ert Bilevich-100, John Marshall-100, Les Rogers 165, Eric Thorson 850, and Selden Warner with 285.

Recently Gary Morse and his wife Susan distributed pens with the Quilts of Valor to the troops at Camp Pendleton. John Westberg and Harold Hardy also distributed pens to the VA Hospital in Long Beach. A thank you letter from the VA is attached. We appreciate all of you that have helped in the distribution.

We encourage all you turners to attend the Pen Turn-A-Thon at the Rockler store in Orange, Saturday, August 23 from 9AM to 2PM. We will be turning pens for Breast Cancer Awareness and all pens will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Bring your turning tools and let us show our support for this event.

We appreciate all the support all of you have given the pen program.

Keep turning and stay healthy.

It was another good year at the Orange County Fair for wood-working, in spite of some difficult circumstances early on with re-gard to the timing of entry and sign-up deadlines.

The featured artist this year was Richard Otsubo, who had been cleaning up in the carving category since at least 2011, which is as far back as I could find records.

Personally, I figured it was high time we got to meet this Ironman of carving, and get a chance to find out what makes him tick. Mr.

Otsubo was working on a magnif-icent diorama of several pheas-ant and discussing all things woodcarving throughout the run of the fair. Unlike many carvers, he prefers to work not in bass-wood, the de facto king of carving woods, but rather in tupelo. He said he finds that good tupelo carves more smoothly than bass-wood does with power carving burrs, and doesn’t fuzz and clog his burrs. Well, just check out these photos: I think you’ll see that the results speak for them-selves!

There were many others demon-strating the art of woodworking as well. The California Carver’s Guild was represented in a booth where they alternated weeks with the O.C. Scrollsaw Association.

All through the fair, the wood-working gallery echoed with the squeal of power carving burrs and the hum of the scrollsaws, punctuated occasionally by the twang of a blade snapping.

Of course, in the big booth across the way, the Orange County Woodworkers Associ-ation and Orange County Woodturners were busy mak-ing some noise of their own. One lathe was used to turn tops for a very appreciative cadre of kids, while the other turned box-es, bowls, goblets, and God-knows-what, to the amusement

of fairgoers of all ages. Addi-tional demon-strations includ-ed hand tool woodworking by a variety of

OCWA members, as well as Ken Cowell’s demonstrations of bevel-cut marquetry, which always drew a crowd of fascinated on-lookers.

Throughout the exhibit gallery could be found the unsung heroes without whom the woodworking display could not have been nearly as great a success as it was this year: the Docents. These dedicat-ed volunteers, augmented by OC Fair staff, kept a watchful eye on the exhibited woodwork and warned off any over-eager fair pa-trons who just couldn’t resist ca-ressing a silky-smooth burled ta-ble, or the intricate fretwork of a wall clock. They also served as interpretive guides, showing the folks that there could be much more to fine craftsmanship than first meets the eye.

Finally, the main purpose of this annual shindig: the woodworking gallery and competition!
