The experience was not the result of diligent study or a convincing argument. No, Nicholas’ conversion experience was the result of simply looking at a tree. As he stood one winter day considering the nakedness of trunk and branch, and the soon to be accomplished budding of new life in spring, Nicholas was struck with wonder at the power and providence of God. It was a moment of grace he would never forget, a vision of Love so powerful that, as he related the experience to a friend forty years later he could not honestly say if anything ever surpassed the intensity of that moment for him. As is so often the case, that initial meeting with God set the keynote for Nicholas’ subsequent approach to living the life of faith. Having encoun- tered God through looking at a tree, he was con- vinced that God could be found in everything. Nicholas set his mind and heart on seeking to live always in the awareness of God’s presence. He believed that no activity or circumstance need divert a person from this awareness. In fact, he claimed to be more united with the Lord when busy about his humble tasks as cook in a Carmelite monastery than when he left them for formal prayer in the chapel. So Nicholas Herman (also known as Brother Lawrence) quietly became a mystic amid pots and pans. He died in France three centuries ago.” (Illustrations today 2005) There are many saints like Nicholas in Christian history- men and women who became holy not by doing religious activities but by doing great with a mind always on God. Jesus points us back, over and over again, to the world of the ordinary as the place where we may learn about God, and encounter God’s wonder- ful presence. May it be so for you during these long and enjoyable days of Summer. May you see God’s glory on walks around town, out in the country. May you see his wonder by the Lake or a pond. "Walk a little slower, Daddy,"

said a child so small. "I'm following

in your footsteps and I don't want to fall. Sometimes your steps

    are very fast, Sometimes they're

hard to see; So walk a little slower,

Daddy, For you are leading me. Someday when I'm all grown up,

You're what I want to be; Then I will have a little child Who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,

And know that I was true; So, walk a little slower,

Daddy, For I must follow you."

During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer: "Look, I'll give you $100 if you'll change the wedding vows. When you get to the part where I'm sup-posed to promise to 'love, honor and obey' and 'be faithful to her forever,' I'd appreciate it if you'd just leave that out." He passed the minis-ter a $100 bill and walked away satisfied. On the day of the wedding, when it came time for the groom's vows, the pastor looked the young man in the eye and said: "Will you promise to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her break-fast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?" The groom gulped and looked around, and said in a tiny voice, "Yes," then leaned toward the pastor and hissed: "I thought we had a deal." The pastor put a $100 bill into the groom's hand and whispered: "She made me a better offer."
