1 The first half of this year has just flown by, and now it’s time to focus our attention on the OCWA booth at the OC Fair espe- cially since we won’t be having a July general meeting as it falls on the fourth. This means that we will be pushing for signing up to participate in the festivities at the June general meeting, and at the woodturners meeting respectively. We are going to need docents, information officers, turners, and general wood- workers to provide a diverse woodworking experience for our visitors there. Please try to find the time to be a part of this year’s fair, because you will have a great time, and you can eat all the deep fried food you could possibly endure. Orientation At both June meetings we will be having Barbara Thompson of the OC Fair staff visiting us, and she will be giving us a short orientation on the fair. If you can’t make it to one of these meetings, and you are par- ticipating in our activities at the fair, we will try to have some handouts for you. Fair Woodworking Project In lieu of our Show and Tell portion of our meeting we will be having our fabulous Newslet- ter Editor, Mr. David Tilson show us what he has planned for our special booth project at the fair. He will be showing us plans, and techniques for achieving a wonderful finished project. He will also be looking for volunteers to help in the fabrication of pre-cut parts for this project prior to the fair. If you do happen to bring some show and tell pieces to the meeting, we will find the time for you to show your creation. Christmas Toy Program The elves up at Santa’s workshop have been getting a little testy what with Santa’s tight schedule, and all, so Mr. Bill Rogers, and his crew of toy makers have been asked to pick up the slack, and they are doing a fine job, but they can always use some help. If you get the chance to get by one of the toy workshops you’ll have a great time, and be doing something special for those less fortunate children of Orange County. Maloof Tour As of this writing we still have openings for our tour of the Sam, and Freda Maloof Foun- dation in Alta Loma on June 29th. We will have a signup sheet at both June meetings as well as an online signup at our ocwood- worker.com web site. You don’t want to miss this tour. It’s Never Easy to Lose a Friend I have been the President of the OCWA three times, and have spent a lot of years writing this col-umn, but it hasn’t got any easier to write about the loss of a friend, and fellow member of our as-sociation.

We lost our friend Jim Koukl this last May after a long hard fought battle with lung cancer. Jim was a tall good looking man who was a quiet, unassuming fellow, and a consummate craftsman who made beautiful furniture.

Although Jim may have been quiet, and unassuming, as I mentioned before, he was also a very principled man who wasn’t afraid to be heard from if he felt something wasn’t right. He kept me on my toes over the years, and his presence will be greatly missed.

Our condolences go out to his wife Kathy, and his family. Please be comforted by the fact that his was a life well lived, and that he brought joy to others through his art.

Hi all! We had a really neat treat at the last meeting where Steffanie Dotson ripped a few pages out of her Furniture design curriculum where she teaches at Palomar College. It was a new twist on how we, as woodworkers, approach design. Many members complimented her and the new angle on design, she showed us. She also talked about the upcoming Furniture Symposium and enlightened us on the plethora of Symposium happenings around LA this summer. It is a rare chance to see this as the symposium moves around the country each year.

Looking forward to June, we have our own Bill Bruins who will be talking on the finer points of using hand tools. I, for one, thought hand tools were antiquated and old school when I first started wood-working. However, I have come to realize that they may be the “power tools” of our forefathers, but they are as relevant today as ever. If your plane, chisels, or spokeshaves don’t currently make nice shavings, maybe it’s not the tool’s fault. Come to the June OCWA regular meeting to learn why I say this (and this isn’t only about sharpening). As always, if you have an idea for a speaker, I’d love to hear about it. Please talk to me at the next meeting.

Best Regards,

- Greg

Toy StoryToy Story Bill RogersBill Rogers

The May toy workshop was attended by 30 people on a beautiful sunny day. We had a great group of very energetic workers who were ready to work. Ed Smet had his usual 40 or so parts for the keepsake boxes with the nice veneered tops to assemble. The sanding group was busy sanding legs and paws for the pull toys made by Allen, Harvey and others. The finishing group was busy spraying the keepsake boxes,

legs, arms and the duck bodies and wheels. We also had Debbie Scott, Mag Musgrave and Ra-chel Kalman making handkerchief dolls for the baby cradles. If your wife or significant other is interested in making some dolls for the cradles please feel free to attend the workshop. We will have material and supplies and the expertise to teach you how to make them. We have about 200 cradles and dolls so far and we hope to have many more by year’s end.

Listed below are some of the toys we received in May.

Al Whitcomb 24 hearts

Allen Dardenelle 60 clacker ducks

Harvey Carr 40 ducks and 40 three-holed ball sticks

John Westberg 50 cars

Len Musgrave 22 seal pull toys.

See you all again on June 1st at 9 am 'til noon.

We still have 13 members turning pens. As of 17 May we have had 1112 finished pens turned in, Eric Thorson is in the lead with 470 pens. We have distributed 636 pens to date 444 to LCDR Kendra Kaufman for active military personnel, 100 to the VA Hospital in Long Beach and 92 to the Wounded Warrior program at Camp Pen-dleton.

Recently Jim Anderson has been in contact with MSGT Yosef Levine, who is in charge of accept-ing donations to the Wounded Warrior Program at Camp Pendleton and also manages donations to the Balboa Hospital in San Diego. We are looking forward to distributing our pens at both fa-cilities. We owe Jim our appreciation for his continued support for the program.

We would like to thank all of you that have donated to the Helmet Fund. The funds allotted by the club do not cover the cost of the pen kits for the entire year, so we appreciate your support. Re-member when you turn in 10 finished pens you get a ticket at the monthly challenge.

Let us all remember long time member Jim Koukl. He was very active in our toy program and at the O.C. Fair. He won many awards at the fair as well as being a docent for our club. He was a fine man and an excellent woodworker.

Our pen count as of 17 May follows:

Jerry Baker 30 Les Rogers 91

Jim Daniels 20 John Rogers 20

Larry Garrett 30 Bret Stoneking 45

Bob Gibbs 150 Eric Thorson 470

John Marshall 106 Seldon Warner 110

Gary Phipps 30 Frank Wilson 10

Stay healthy, keep turning and we will see you at the fair.

Do you have any woodworking-related tips, tricks, news, or comments? Email them to the editor ([email protected]) or write them down and hand them to David at a club meeting. In an Association of woodworkers, every member, even a nov-ice, can contribute something to improve everyone’s knowl-edge and skill in the craft, be it a new trick or technology, a “learning experience,” or a reminder of an old-school tech-nique.

Girl Scouts Birdhouse Project

Len Musgrave (lower right) was the technical advi-sor to a group of Girl Scouts from Troop 1783 from Foothill Ranch who, over two Friday afternoons, cut and assembled 12 bird houses. Each girl laid out her pattern on a cedar fence slat then made one cut with a hand saw, and then used a battery operated skill saw to cut the pieces out and a drill to cut the hole. They sanded the individual pieces then they drilled pilot holes and used stainless steel screws to put them together. It was great fun and the girls were great learners and several of them were really good with tools because they have made things before with their grandfathers. My granddaughter Emily, age 12, is the fourth girl from the left on the top row. The bird house will be given to Starr Ranch Bird Sanctuary in Orange County. Each girl signed her house and we all had a great time. Each Girl Scout will receive the Woodworking Merit Badge from this project.

OCWA Project: Volunteers Needed

For the O.C. Fair this year, we’re changing things up slightly from the usual routine. The Fair staff asked us to try and involve demonstrations from ALL sorts of woodwork over the entire run of the O.C. Fair. (In previous years, we have had more

emphasis on woodturning, with carvers and scroll-sawyers demonstrating during specific weeks.) To fulfill that need, James Santhon asked for ideas for a quick project that could be demonstrated in the OCWA booth, and completed over the course of the Fair. David Tilson came up with an idea to make children’s footstools that could be made using sim-ple techniques involving any combination of hand tools, wood lathe, scrollsaw, and cordless drills. Here’s the rub: David can’t source and prepare the wood by himself in time for the fair, and he can’t supply all of the tools himself either! The plans for the footstools (subject to revision) are posted on the OCWA website. If you think you might be able to help out, please contact David at :

[email protected] (714) 330-4786.

Show Your Colors with OCWA / OCWT Wear

At our June meeting, a representative from Mono-gram Magic will have a table set up with displays of some of our new OCWA and OCWT mono-grammed shirts, hats and jackets. He will be taking orders and will also have some items available for immediate sale.
