1 Happy New Year everybody! I hope all of you had a wonderful Holiday season, and that you got your two front teeth for Christmas. We here at the OCWA are looking forward to a new year full of opportunities for meeting new friends, learning new things, and just having a great time in our wood- working fellowship. 2014 Christmas Party The 2014 version of the OCWA Christmas Party was another success due in large part to Mr. Len Musgrave, and his bastion of merry helpers. A lot of people were involved in preparing this event, and our thanks go out to all of you. We had a special presentation by Mr. Mike Yukihiro, and Mr. Guy Willacker of Rockler of Orange to Mr. Bill Rogers, and Mr. John Marshall for their involvement in our Christmas Toy Program, and our Military Pen Pro- gram respectively. Mike, and Guy also presented the OCWA with a new lathe stand for our newly acquired Jet Mini Lathe, which included a carved OCWA logo on the front. Bill Rogers, and John Marshall gave out certificates, and plaques for the Christmas Toy Program, and the Military Pen Program to so many people that I'm not sure who the Toymaker of the Year is, or the Pen maker of the Year is, so you will have to refer to their respective articles in the Newsletter for an answer on that topic. I do know, however, who the Woodworker of the Year is. This is not an easy award to pick, be- cause there are many people in our organization that go above, and beyond the call of duty, but I think this year's recipient is the embodiment of what the OCWA stands for, so it was a great pleasure for me to present the Joe Lomax memo- rial Woodworker of the Year trophy to Mr. Larry Marley. Happy New Year everybody! I hope all of you had a wonderful Holiday season, and that you got your two front teeth for Christmas.

We here at the OCWA are looking forward to a new year full of opportunities for meeting new friends, learning new things, and just having a great time in our wood-working fellowship.

John Marshall for their involvement in our Christmas Toy Program, and our Military Pen Pro-gram respectively.

This is not an easy award to pick, be-cause there are many people in our organization that go above, and beyond the call of duty, but I

think this year's recipient is the embodiment of what the OCWA stands for, so it was a great pleasure for me to present the Joe Lomax memo-rial Woodworker of the Year trophy to Mr. Larry Marley. Congratula-tions Larry, it was well deserved.

Three New Board Members I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Chester Maharaj (Vice President), and Mr. Frank Andrews (Secretary), and Richard Hodgin (Turners President) to the Board of Directors of the OCWA for 2015.

I would also like to thank our outgoing Board Members Mr. Greg Madrigal, Mr. Jerry Nininger, and Mr. Robin Hoff for their exemplary service to the OCWA. It has been an honor to serve with these men. Thanks again.

Show and Tell Our January presentation will be our new Vice President, Mr. Chester Maharaj showing us how to photo-graph our pieces for maximum effect, so I was thinking, which can be dangerous at times, that we could pick a couple of pieces off the Show and Tell table for Chester to photograph, so this should be an incen-tive to bring in some of your work with the possibility of having professional quality photos of your work to take home.

Refreshment Chairman Our friend, and refreshment chairman, Mr. Jim Steinmetz has stepped down from that position to become a Vagabond in his new RV, so we are in dire need of a Refreshment Chairman to handle refreshing our membership at both of our meetings.

I haven't seen anyone leaping forward to volunteer for this position, so please be advised that if the posi-tion isn't filled you will have to brown bag it to our meetings. Just saying.

Safety In the United States someone has some form of dismemberment, or damage to their hands on the table saw every ten minutes. This is a startling statistic, and should be a reminder that no matter how much ex-perience you have machines don't think, and it is up to you to prevent accidents from occurring by taking the proper precautions, and staying focused on doing the job safely.

The New Year is upon us. This brings new and exciting events, which we can all look for-ward to. New resolutions to make and break, new tools, equipment, and designs to add the excitement of turning wood. Can one ask for anything more; well you get the point.

As the new woodturning president, I look forward to working with one of the most talented groups of turners with which I have had the pleasure to be associated.

Many years ago I owned two furniture manufacturing companies: case goods and unfinished furniture, however now, as many of you already know, my first passion is making and playing Native American Style Flutes. Of course, spindles, bowls, and segmented works are also on the top of my list.

A much deserving THANK YOU goes out to Robin for the last three years of his dedication and service, also to all of the people who have made the Wood Turners group what it is today.

Harry Williams gave a very spirited, insightful presenta-tion on scrapers. What a collection of tools!

Everyone now has a new challenge to try something new to start off the New Year. As Harrys favorite goes “If you ask ten turners how to do something, you will get twelve answers.” Now it’s your turn to add to that list.

At January’s meeting, Ralph Alder, all-time favorite, will enlighten us with his talent and expertise. Be prepared for a great show.

Until then, BE SAFE AND KEEP YOUR TOOLS SHARP.

Richard Hodgin [email protected] 714-820-9933

Hi everyone and welcome to the New Year. I am Chester Maharaj, and I will be serving as your new vice president for 2015. I had served as vice president a few years ago and am now back.

We will start off the new year meeting on January, 7th with a demonstration by myself. Yes, I have worked all my life as a professional photographer and now teach high school seniors photography. We will demonstrate and discuss how to take photos of your projects that will sell. I will have a mini studio set up and if any one of you have an item to photograph, this will be a great time.

We will be having a variety of speakers throughout the year and will make these meetings interesting and enjoyable. If you have an idea or a person that you feel our members will like to see please give me a call. My cell phone is 949-422-4522.

This year we made 3500 toys and we all had a great time. At the OCWA Christmas Dinner we presented our awards and certificates to those mem-bers who made significant contributions to our 2014 Toy Program. The Toy Maker of the Year was presented to Rex Bullock. Rex is a retired custom interior cabinet maker for high end yachts. He has incorporated the same precision and creativity in his toys and they are real master pieces. He has also lent a hand to me that whenever I need some extra help making some missing parts or to do some quality adjustments to some toys Rex is always available. He and his well behaved

dog are a pleasant sight at the toy workshops. Congratulations Rex on a well deserved award.

Certificates were also presented to those who participated in the toy program. We handed out the certifi-cates to those in attendance at the Christmas Dinner and they are pictured in the photos. Those who couldn’t make the dinner will be given their certificate at a future meeting. We had so many make toys this year that we had to take two photos at the dinner to get everyone in.

The other photos were taken at the Camp Pendleton Team Dark Horse Christ-mas Dinner. As you can see the little girls were happy to get a toy and she looks like she has a race car and the other one has the dancing monkey.

It has been a pleasure and I thank all of you who have helped with the toy pro-gram this year. You have done a great job and you can be proud and satisfied that you help make it a fun time for us all. We’ll see you all on January 10th of 2015 at 9am sharp at my house to begin the 2015 Toy Program.

We had another great year with the Pen Program. We made over 2500 pens that we gave to our service people both locally and in distant lands. At the OCWA Christmas Dinner this year, we recognized those members who made over 100 pens with an engraved plaque. Eric Thorson received the Pen Turner of the Year Award for turning over 1,000 pens. In the group photo are those who turned more than 100 pens, from the left is Robert Bilevich with 120, Les Rogers with 251, Seldon Warner with 360 John Marshall with 150 and Eric Thor-son with over 1000 pens, Gary Phipps not pictured made 110 pens. In addition to a beauti-ful plaque made by Rockler, they also received a gift certificate to Rockler from the OCWA. We thank Mi-chael Yukihiro and Don Scott for the plaques. The following members turned over 50 pens and received a Certificate of Appreciation: Gary Taylor 85 pens, Ron Krause 56 pens and Brett Stoneking 50 pens.

Those who were instrumental in distributing the pens were: Jim Anderson, John Westberg, Harold Hardy, Joe Kaufman, Les Rogers, John Marshall, Eric Thorson, Jeff Rogers, Bill Rogers, and Gary Morse. OCWA Distributed pens to: VA hospital Long Beach, USO, USMC Color Guard, Miramar Air Show, Quilts of Valor, Irvine, Irvine Valley College Lake Forest Adoption Ceremony, Team Dark Horse of Camp Pendleton, Naval Medical Ctr. San Diego. Photos are from the Team Dark Horse Christmas Party at Camp Pendleton.

We also want to thank all those who contrib-ute money to the helmet and those organizations who also help us purchase the kits for our members to make. Every dime you give goes to buying pen kits and the pens are a small gift to our service people. They are really stunned when you give them something that was hand made by someone who really cares about them. Every time they pick up that pen, they will think about the person who made the pen and thank you again for your efforts. What a gift.

Woodworker of the Year

Here is a photo of the OCWA Woodworker of the year for 2014: Larry Marley. If you have any doubts about Larry's woodworking skill, humor and creativi-ty, see his web site and it will convince you he is our 2014 Woodworker of the Year, and he is a gift-ed webmaster.

OC Register Recognizes Efforts of OCWA’s Toy Program and Volunteers

The December 1 edition of the Orange County Reg-ister featured an article in the Life section which spotlighted the continuing efforts of OCWA’s Toymakers:

“These aren’t the beeping, blinking, battery-sucking electronics, the graphic video games or radio-controlled vehicles, robots or drones that seem to top kids’ wish lists as soon as they shift out of diapers and into digital.

These toys are better.”

That’s how OC Register columnist Marcia C. Smith began in describing the miracles of 19th Century technology turned out by Bill Rogers and OCWA’s volunteer Toymakers to entertain the tots of the 21st Century. In addition to Mr. Rogers, Jeff Bennett, Deft Inc., Jim Anderson, Anderson International Trading, and Ed Smith all received mention in the article. (Who is this Ed Smith, you ask? I’ll bet that Ed Smet could tell you!) A hearty WELL DONE to everyone who has volunteered their time, tools, and all sorts of other goods and services this year in support of the Toy Making program and the children of Orange County!

A Very Special Thank You

The OCWA would like to pay a special thank you to Michael Yukihiro, Manager of Rockler of Orange and Guy Willacker, Assistant Manager for recogniz-ing Bill Rogers, our Toy Program Chairman and John Marshall, our Pen Program Chairman with a special plaque at the Christmas Dinner for their ef-forts during the year. Bill and John have a special love for their programs and they put their hearts and souls into making it fun for all those who partici-pate in both programs. There is a lot of time spent by each of them that goes unnoticed to get ready for each meeting and workshop and even more time to get all the supplies ready and set up. Thank you Don Scott for engineering and making the plaques on one of Rockler’s CNC Milling Machines.

We would also like to thank Mike, Wayne and Don for their efforts in making the beautiful lathe table for our new Jet mini lathe. It is a real masterpiece and the OCWA Logo on the front makes it look even more impressive.

Thanks again from everyone at the Orange County Woodworkers Association
