Welcome to the New Year of 2021. Let us hope that we have learned our lessons from the trials that we have endured over the past year and can now move forward into this new year ready to take on whatever it throws our way. 2020 may have been the year that we were forced to learn adaptability, but 2021 is all about resilience. Let’s start the New Year with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and positivity, and a determination to remain resilient no matter what happens. On a happier note, our entertainment committee put on a great Christmas celebration. Many residents have commented on it. The colorful houses and carts also brought a bit of cheer. I would like to thank the many volunteers who assisted in making this a special event. I would also like to thank Sun for the pizza, and I am looking forward to many more joint efforts in the future. Hopefully in 2021 we can resume our celebrations on a grander scale. Our bean bag baseball season will be kicking off on the 9 th of January, 2021. Other outdoor activities that are still available are bocce ball, horseshoes and shuffle board. These can be played with minimal interaction with others for safety. Of course, there is always golfing, swimming, bicycling, walking, etc… We have all had to make some very difficult choices about our activities and family life. As the pandemic swarms around us, let us continue to do what is needed to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Finally, a special shout out to all the residents who have donated time and items to the various food drives. A really great response from all of you.

Catherine “Cathy” Lucille (Lapp) Guthrie, age 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Macungie on December 14, 2020.  She was a devoted wife to Gary L. Guthrie, her husband of 56 years.  She was also the daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Stauffer) Lapp, sister to Carol Beehrle, the late Linda Laczo, Robert A. Lapp , and Daryl Lapp.  Cathy is survived by her sons, Tyrone Guthrie with wife Cindy of Macungie and Gary H. Guthrie with wife Debra of Emmaus, as well as her grandchildren,  Taylor Guthrie with wife Becky of Fairfield, CT, Alyssa Guthrie of Cincinnati, OH, and Adeline Guthrie of Emmaus.

Cathy and Gary cherished their time in Florida by enjoying the warm weather and playing golf.  She also enjoyed playing bocce and spending time with her fellow retirees.  Cathy was a member of Eastern Star and very charitable in her giving.  Cathy loved her family and loved her time spent with her grandchildren.  Her direct manner will be missed by her loved ones and those who knew her.  Cathy loved her cat and spent many hours doting over her Bubba.

At the request of Catherine, no services will be held.  The family will be planning a memorial in the future.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Luke’s Hospice or Lehigh County Humane Society.

Bean Bag Baseball 2021

It is getting close to starting the 2021 Bean Bag Baseball Season. We have only 10 teams this season. We will be starting play in the regular spot behind the club house on the 9th of January @ 1PM. A schedule will be published very soon. Team Captains will be briefing players on the rules of play and the COVID-19 safety procedures.

I GET QUESTIONS….

One of my design clients recently asked me, WHAT can I plant under my oak tree? It’s so

full, the shade won’t let anything live there. I asked her without seeing it yet, was she sure the

shade was the problem? There are many native plants that grow in shade down here—

remember, Florida originally was almost all overgrown, thick, swampland! It was my guess that

the tree roots were the real problem.

Here at BHP most of us with Oak Trees—or other shade trees—have “lollipop” cuts, and the

roots are trimmed so they don’t rip up all concrete work in the vicinity.

But even by trimming the roots of a shade tree, the roots near the trunk are often near the

surface, preventing a healthy undergrowth. I suggested the client think of ground covering

plants, as their root system needn’t be deep, and the plants will spread over the surface ground.

Another idea is to “plant” pots in the ground, digging out a space for them, and putting plants in

the pots. Then you can water and nourish the pots without the tree roots taking it all.

If you decide to use some of the various types of ferns down here that spread, these plants in

sunken pots will easily take over your bare spot. There are tall, mid-sized, and low ferns in

differing varieties and speeds of spread. Other examples to plant would be Algerian Ivy that

only gets about 1’ high. (“Snow- cap is variegated), and Cast Iron Plant, about 12-18” high.

HOA MEETINGS The HOA Board meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month and the HOA Membership Meetings are on the 1st Tuesday of each month during the month of October through April beginning at 7:00 PM. The February Membership meeting is the Annual meeting at which Board Member elections are held. The meeting agenda is posted on the bulletin board 48 hours prior to the meeting. All HOA members are encouraged to attend the Board meetings. If you have an issue or concern, please contact a Board member prior to the meeting to have that item added to the agenda or sign in before the meeting. You will have 3 minutes to speak about that item during the meeting. (This is the “Sunshine Law” as defined under Florida Statute 723.078.) In addition, at the end of each meeting there will be an opportunity to ask questions or present items for discussion

HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION (HOA) Membership in the Home Owners Association is not mandatory, however, the Board represents the home owners of Blue Heron Pines as a group and provides a united voice for the home owners. They work as a liaison between BHP Owners/Management and the residents. The cost is $20 per year (Jan 1-Dec 31). This entitles the home owner to one vote per household for election of Board Members and any issues that need to be voted on. This money also pays for holiday events, kitchen supplies for Saturday Coffee and various activities, Legal fund, decorations for the Clubhouse, copying costs, reduced price on tickets for HOA events and more. Renters are also encouraged to join the HOA. Although they cannot vote, they are welcome to participate in all of the Blue Heron Pines activities and events as a member. You can purchase your Membership at monthly meetings or from Jae-Ann Carder #528

WILDLIFE: It is very important that you DO NOT feed any of the wildlife in and around our park. From the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website: “In Florida, it is ILLEGAL to feed manatees, sandhill cranes, bears, raccoons, foxes, and alligators.” We need to do our part by making sure we are not providing any food for any animals (including birds and ducks). If you have a fruit tree, make sure you pick up fallen fruit. Above all, if you see an alligator, just leave it alone! The same is true of the coyotes people have seen out and about at night. If you leave them alone, they will do the same.

HEALTH & WELFARE Sunshine COMMITTEE: Cathy Richardson #555 502-321-5229 [email protected] volunteered for this committee. She will gather information from other residents about who is ill or hospitalized, has a family member with a serious illness, or has passed away. If you have any news about a neighbor, please let Cathy know.
