These high performers have shown outstanding academic potential. From approximately 1.5 million program entrants (Junior PSAT test takers), each of these students is among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants.

From these 50,000 high scorers nationwide, about 16,000 will be named National Merit Program Semifinalists representing the top scorers in each state, while the other 34,000 will be commended for their performance. Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program will learn of their standing in September. Congratulations once again and good luck!

Art teacher Keith Martin’s piece, Installation #64, was recently featured in “White/Black/Monochrome”, a national juried exhibition, at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA. FALL ACT/SAT TESTING

Each year the greater GHS community recognizes and celebrates our seniors by awarding scholarships at our annual Scholarship Night. This year we will be recognizing members of the Class of 2017 on June 8th at 7 pm in the Hieber Auditorium. Over 50 scholarships will be awarded through the generosity of local fam-ilies, organizations, and businesses. On behalf of our students, we would like to express our gratitude for being part of such a generous community.

SCHEDULING

SCHOLARSHIPS

The master schedule for 2017-18 is being created. We anticipate distributing schedules to juniors, sophomores, and freshmen prior to exam week. Students can meet with their counselor between June 13th and the close of the academic year in order to make any necessary schedule changes. Schedule changes will be made in sit-uations where students received a course they have already taken, failed to receive a requested course that is required for graduation, etc. Counselors will be in their offices through June 23rd and are expected to return from summer break on August 24th. The School Counseling Office will be open on a reduced schedule with limited staff throughout the summer.

Schedules will be distributed to current 8th graders during the week of June 12th.

CREDIT RECOVERYStudents who have failed classes (or who are in danger of doing so) should see their counselors NOW in order to explore the options available over the summer. In our experience, the sooner a student is able to make up required credit, the greater the chance for success moving forward. If students don’t address credit recovery needs as they occur, they often become discouraged and fall farther behind.

Courses will be offered at the high school this summer through the Goffstown Adult Program (GAP). Classes will be offered Monday-Thursday beginning July 5th. Sessions are from 8:30-10:00 or 10:15-11:45. Registration forms are available in both the School Counseling Office and the Main Office. Classes are approved to run based on registration numbers, so consider signing up early.

Fall ACT and SAT dates are early this year. The ACT will be administered on September 9th with a registration deadline of August 4th. The SAT test date is August 28th with a registration deadline of July 28th.

FBLA Reflects on an Amazing Year!FBLA officers decided to end the school year by offering some parting thoughts and sharing them with our school community. Below are some reflective pieces of writing from our hard working, dedicated and enthusiastic FBLA officers:

From Allison Lavallee – President I joined the GHS FBLA chapter my sophomore year on a whim, and it turned out to be one of my best decisions I have made. I have been a part of the club for three years now, being elected president both my junior and senior years. I have had the opportunity to attend business conferences around the state, as well as collaborating on various different projects and meetings with other members of our club. Every skill

earned is incredibly valuable to our futures, whether it be in public speaking, running for a state office position, or even starting a business of your own. I believe being president and being able to lead such a successful group of my peers has been one of my biggest accomplishments in my high school career. I have gained so many more leadership skills and made so many new amazing connec-tions with those that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I also believe this has been a huge factor in what has lead to my passion to pursue a career in business in the future. I can never thank our dedicated members enough, as well as our advisor, Mrs. Scarlett. They have all impacted my life in the best way possible and have helped in making this club special, not only for me, but for our community. Leea Sarvella – GHS School Store ManagerThis year FBLA has been very memorable. This was my second year in FBLA and my first being an officer and it was probably the best choice I made this year. I have met so many amazing people who share the same interests as I do, who are hardworking, intel-ligent in the business world, and some of the nicest people. I am sad to see the seniors go and wish them the best of luck, but I am looking forward to meeting new people and spending another 2 years with people who share the same interests as I do.

Abigial Bono – Vice PresidentI joined FBLA during my junior year of high school. I was drawn to the club because I knew I wanted to major in Business in col-lege. I was surprised by how quickly the club became so import-ant to me. I loved meeting and working with other students that had the same passion as I did. It made all the work we had super fun and easier. As an officer, I learned more about being a leader, an inherent skill of mine. It was cool to see kids looking up to me for guidance and I knew that I could always rely on them if there was something I needed help with or was unsure about. I am re-ally going to miss the great group of Future Business Leaders we have here at GHS as well as our dedicated advisor Mrs. Scarlett who has been a mentor to me throughout high school as well.

Julianna Trost – Director of Public Relations/New FBLA State OfficerBy far, this has been the most successful year for me and I owe

it all to FBLA. Not only did I help make a difference in my community by actively participating in community service projects, but I also acquired more leadership skills that’ll benefit me today and in the future. I am excited to announce that I’ve been elected as the next NH FBLA State Officer for this upcoming year and I am looking forward to sharing everything Mrs. Scarlett has taught me through FBLA and influencing my own leadership skills with the rest of New Hampshire! I want everyone to know that FBLA isn’t just for those interested in pursuing a career in business, but for individuals passionate about helping the community, acquiring leadership skills, developing worthwhile connections and sharing their own passion with others.

Congratulations to senior Gabe Lescatre, who won the State Grand Cash Prize of $1500.00 at the New Hampshire Art Ed-ucators’ Association Youth Art Month exhibition held at Plymouth State Univer-

sity. Gabe entered his acrylic painting “Sapphire Surge” into the Sargent Arts sponsored event. Pieces that echoed the theme “Re-flections on Wa-ter” were eligible to be entered into the competition. Among the oth-er awards there were winners from K-3, 4-6, Middle and High School who each received $100 in art supplies. Along with Gabe’s prize, Mrs. Nichols was awarded $2000.00 worth of art supplies for being his art mentor.

The four Art Honors students will present their senior year work in an exhibi-tion to be held in the GHS arts lobby on Tuesday, May 23 from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Refreshments will be pro-vided and the public is invited to see the results of their efforts.

VISUAL ARTS ART CLUBTie Dye was the focus of our first meeting after we returned from spring break. T-shirts, scarves and other items were given beautiful color de-signs with dye. Everyone ended up with something really nice.

On March 23, we will help serve refreshments at the Art Honors Exhibit and also enjoy all of their amazing work.

Plans are underway for an ice cream sundae buffet to close out the year and to say goodbye to our seniors. We wish the best to our senior members and especially our senior officers as they prepare for graduation and life beyond GHS.

We invite members of the incoming freshmen class along with upper classmen to join this diverse, active, and social group in September. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 19 at 2:50pm in art room A-01.

International French Travel, April 2017 and 2018!In April of 2017 fourteen students from Goffstown High School traveled to Quebec for a three day weekend – they spoke some French (always ordering meals en français) expe-rienced lots of French culture, walked many miles, took lots of pictures and ate very well. We’re hoping to travel to France next year – 2017 April vacation in Paris and the Loire valley.

There will be an introductory informational meeting on Tues-day, June 6 at 6pm in Room 100. We’ll discuss an itinerary, see some photos from our last Paris and the Loire trip, and hopefully start the registration process for next year’s group! For more info feel free to check out the Students Love Trav-el website or contact Ms. Andrew at [email protected].

S T U D E N T C O U N C I LAlthough we are nearing the end of yet another year at Goffstown High, the GHS Student Council is working harder than ever at ful-filling their duties as a Student Government. For example, the GHS StuCo just hosted the annual Spring District Meeting, a meeting in which Student Councils from the Central District visit Goffstown High for a workshop put on by our Council. Our Spring District Committee did a great job again this year, incorporating the important theme of safety into the workshop. Captain Kerry P. Steckow-ych Esq. and School Resource Officer Jackie Pelletier graciously joined us to share their experience with us, showing presentations on various aspects of safety, including drug abuse and drunk driving. The Spring District Committee also organized a great dinner for the Central District Student Councils, including a favorite: the Puritan’s Chicken Tenders. Another purpose of the Spring District Meeting is to conduct the Central District Executive Board elections, and this year’s Exec. Board is shown below, including two Goffstown High Students: Ethan Danielson and Danielle Vermette. Thank you to all that helped with our Spring District Meeting, including the committee, the custodial staff, and our advisors, Señora McKinnon and Señor Fitzpatrick!

Central District Exec. President: Ariana LoFaroCentral District Exec. Vice President: Ethan DanielsonCentral District Exec. Historian: Danielle Vermette

The Junior Class Student Council is putting the finishing touches to the 2017 GHS Prom! This year’s Prom will be at the Radisson from 6-11 pm on Friday, May 12th, 2018. Students are reminded that in order to attend Prom, they must attend school for the first two periods of the day. The Junior Class StuCo chose a rustic theme this year, opting for classic touches of light neutrals and candlelights. We are very excited to be in charge of running the Prom this year and hope all attendees enjoy it!

On May 26, our very own Harrison Blondeau (NHASC President) and Mitchell (John) Scacchi (President of Central District) will be going to the State House for the annual NHASC Spring Convention. At this convention, leaders of NHASC and the Student Council District leaders discuss how the year has gone. The Honor Councils of the year are also announced, along with the winners of the Advisor of the Year and Administrator of the Year awards.

Finally, with the year coming to a close, we are beginning to form our Senior Send-off Committee. This committee is formed of dear friends of our fellow Senior StuCo members and recognizes members for the work they have contributed to GHS while wishing them luck on their next step in life. Which StuCo member is going to get a gift and give a speech for which StuCo Senior? That‘s a secret! But no matter who is on the Committee, we as the Goffstown Student Council would like to thank our Seniors for the hard work they’ve done in their years at Goffstown High School. Our graduating Seniors are as follows: Hunter Aldenberg, Jacob Borg-es, Jackson Brannen, Pamela Castillo-Diaz, Eric Choquette, Nykola Isaia, Molly MacNeily, Nicholas Mattison, Kayley Noterman, Hannah Thomas, and Emilie Veilleux.

Thank you so much for allowing me to report information from the GHS Student Council to you all this year! I hope you all have a great rest of the year and an even better summer!Danielle Vermette

Radio City Music Hall Jessica Davison works with the Movement & Dance Company

The GHS Movement & Dance Company welcomed Radio City Music Hall Rockette, Jessica Davison, over April vacation. Ms. Davison is a Bedford, NH native and trained locally with the Bedford Youth Performing Company (BYPC) and Southern NH Dance Theater. After high school, she continued her dance training at the prestigious Boston Con-servatory for Dance. You can find Ms. Davi-son front and center in the Rockette’s famous kick lines as well as special appearances in

many Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parades. Thanks to GHS Per-forming Arts collaboration with BYPC, Ms. Davison spent two days over April vacation choreographing a dance piece for the Movement & Dance Company’s Spring Dance Concert on June 9th & 10th. The piece involves 16 of the company’s dancers who walked away from the experience feeling grateful and hap-pily exhausted.

June 9th and 10th 7:30 PM, Hieber Theater

Join the GHS Movement & Dance Company at this year’s annu-al Spring Dance Concert and Gala. This performance celebrates the work of the dance company with over ten dance works that include student choreography, guest artist choreography, and alumni performances. After weeks of hard work, student chore-ography was presented to an adjudication board on May 10th for selection. Seniors Liz Byam, Addie Houle, and Emily Clickner along with juniors MaryCatherine Gill and Catie Verostick each brought a piece to the adjudication board. Find out which pieces were selected at the June 9th and 10th concerts! In addition, the Movement & Dance Company was lucky enough to commission three guest artist pieces including work from Lisa Travis, Dan-ielle Hecker-Zannon, and Radio City Music Hall Rockette Jessi-ca Davison. A special collaboration with the GHS Jazz Ensem-ble and MoDaCo will feature All-State Musicians Lucas Jones, Madeline Short, and Emily Lescarte. At Saturday’s performance, the dance company welcomes back the Summer Theater cast for a special one-time reunion performance! Tickets are $10 for stu-dents and seniors and $12 for adults.

ATHLETICS.....................................................continued on page 18

With the spring sports season underway, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our spring sports venues. Both baseball teams will play their home games at Lions Club Field on West Union Street in Goffstown.

Both softball teams will play their games on campus. The varsity and junior varsity lacrosse teams will play their home games behind GHS on the stadium field. Finally, our tennis teams will play their home matches at Barnard Park.

SchedulesWith the crazy weather we are experiencing once again this spring, you can get updated game schedules by checking the GHS Athlet-ics website (www.goffstownathletics.com) and clicking on the team schedule you would like to view in the season dropdown menu. You can also visit the NHIAA website (www.NHIAA.org). To get up to date scores, alerts on game postponements and cancellations, create a “FAN” account online at (www.goffstownathletic.com). *Please note: only select “FAN” as an option to create your account. I hope to see you at one of our many spring sporting events.

GHS Athletics FAQQuestion: I have passing grades and no incompletes in all of my classes for the semester. Will I be eligible to play a sport in the upcoming season?

Answer: Any student must have passed at least FIVE credit courses the previous QUARTER. Eligibility is not assessed on semester grades but previous quarter grades. (This is a common mistake made by individuals seeking athletic eligibility.)

Furthermore, a student ineligible under Goffstown High School rules, but eligible under the NHIAA guidelines, may apply for a waiver hearing to determine, on a case by case basis, if a student should be granted eligibility. This can only happen once during a student-athlete’s high school career and is subject to approval by the Principal.

Parents and SportsmanshipIt takes an ongoing effort to make sure that Goffstown Athletic teams demonstrate their best behavior both on and off the field/courts of play. In the process of doing this, it has been apparent to me that sportsmanship doesn’t end on the fields/courts but extends into the stands, which by and large are populated with parents and family members of our student athletes. In an effort to bring more awareness to sportsmanship, I’m asking each parent of an athlete at Goffstown High School to take a minute to view the following link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZXfxxTLyUE.

Senior Athletic Banquet and Hall of Fame Dinner:Save the date: Friday, June 2nd at 6:30pm in the Main Gymnasium. Come celebrate the culmination of our senior athletes four-year athletic experience, and recognize our newly inducted hall of fame members. The evening includes a meal and awards will be present-ed. Senior athlete parents can expect to receive their invitations in the mail in the next week or so. If you have any questions please contact Bridget Lambert at 660-5319 or [email protected].

Spring Sports AwardsPlease inquire with your team’s coach for information on your student athletes team awards ceremony.

Welcome 8th Grade FamiliesIt is my distinct pleasure to welcome all the new GRIZZLIES to GHS! We are excited to get to know each and every one of our new cubs! Parents and student athletes alike are asked to sign up on the new GHS Athletics website by adding a “FAN ACCOUNT” which will enable you to receive notifications/alerts from the Athletic Department along with any and all teams you desire to receive

Fall SportsIn an effort to allow for more effective summer planning, there are several dates that I would like to highlight for all potential fall ath-letes. The first day of football practice will be Wednesday, August 9th, while the first date of practice for the remaining fall sports will be Monday, August 14th. All tryouts will last no less than three days and practice will pick up right after tryouts. We will be printing the times and sites for the individual sports in the Goffstown News. Information can also be found on the GHS website (www.goffstownathletics.com) throughout the summer. If you have not yet done so, please go to the GHS Athletics website and create a fan account and follow the athletic department, along with any and all other teams you wish you receive notifications from. Please note: only select “FAN” as an option to create your account.

We anticipate the fall sports online registration site to be open by the start of June. Please look for announcements on the GHS Ath-letics website.

Your student athlete will need to have an updated physical on file with the nurse’s or AD’s office. All incoming freshmen and athletes that are new to our school must have proof of an up to date (within 1 year of their sports starting date) physical on file in the nurses or Athletic Directors office, before practice begins. Pleas drop them off at the main office at your earliest convenience throughout the summer.

If you have any questions, or would like information, please call the Athletic office at 660-5313.

“The great thing coming from sports is you understand the concept of a team. It leaves no room for be-ing selfish, and that’s something I picked up from home.”
