Grade 1 Weekly Newsletter April 12 Wow! What a fantastic week with the Love and Kindness Celebration, Person of the Week, Science Fair, and the NED program. We are the best school in Manchester (spread the word). It was thrilling on Monday as we all got to see the fabulous tri-folders as the children brought them in. No pictures for you to see because I don’t want to spoil the surprise when you come in on Friday and get to see the presentations. Another cute story for reading, it about a dog who ate the birthday cake. The sentences in the story repeated and built upon each other. The story has a great rhythm. Then we learned the parts of a recipe and how to read a recipe. We are still working on graphing and geometry in Math. We enjoyed designing with the 3-demensional shapes and figuring out how to complete pictures with these shapes.

Wow!

We enjoyed designing with the 3-demensional shapes and figuring out how to complete pictures with these shapes.

studying the circulatory system and now we know the real sound the heart makes. See if your child remembers what it sounds like. Our heart beats between 60 and 80 beats per minute. Ask your

child which animal’s heart beats between 800 and 1000 times per minute. We also had some play stereoscopes in the classroom. Some children swear they hear their heart beat.

For most of the week, we have been working on our Science Fair presentations. Many children had it already memorized and some children were very close. Now, all of us know it by heart. We are working on speaking loudly and slowly and looking at the audience. We are so excited and just can’t wait for Friday.

On Tuesday, we found out who our surprise guest were for the Love and Kindness Program, CHAOS AND KINDNESS. They orginially came from Goffstown High School and now perform in Las Vegas and they have a television show. Well. . . they did create chaos when they came to our school and then gave us a fabulous show with their drums. They had Mrs. Tionna and Miss Abbey compete against each other with their drumming skills. It was too funny. The teachers were great sports about it. Next, they had all the teachers dance and finally some of the children. Last but not least, they talked about giving and helping others. They were wonderful.

We had Nola’s Person of the Week. Her mom and her grandmother were able to come. She brought us in a cupcake treat to eat during her presentation and we had extra for Thursday’s snack time. Cool.

Friday was our long waited Science Fair. The children did a fantastic job of presenting to the school. By the end, they were exhausted. We relaxed in the classroom for half an hour and we were recharged and ready to go for the parents.

Thank you for all your help with the whole science project. Your children gained a lot from doing it with you. They acquired knowledge of their subjects but more importantly how to break up a large project into small pieces. The also learned all about the format of research, bibliographies, reports, models, and how to prepare for a presentation. They learn how neatness counts.

After our Science Fair, we saw the fantastic NED Show. A women called Megan did amazing tricks with the yo-yo while telling us a funny story. The story taught us about “NED” which means Never Give Up, Encourage others, and Do your best. Our own Demetri won a yo-yo by having an excellent answer to one of Megan’s questions.
