RE- VOLT -ING ??DIRTY CHEAP ? NO ! BUT CRAZY DC YESAlthough Hard Rock does not get heavy airplay on the radio, besides special features from time totime, it usually sells in big amounts, standing in an oneven relationship to the extent of media attention.Hard Rock concerts are mostly very well attended by a very loyal following of headbangers whichproves there is a good market for this sort of music. Ofcourse there are exceptions, bands like IronMaiden who hit the top of the European Top 100 with their album Powerslave (their single TwoMinutes To Midnight even went to no. 1 in the UK) or Van Helen's Jump. The hard rock scene ishowever more flourishing in the USA where many of these groups get lots and lots of airplay and donot find the same trouble as in Europe making the charts. A group like Def Leppard are far morepopular in the US than in their home country and even sold 4 million copies of their Pyromania album inthe US alone. But remember, even the real Heroes like Bruce Springsteen started their career in aHeavy Metal Band. Unlikely? But true. Hard Rock can't be denied and has been around for ages andit'll stay as long as there is music!

MAKES YOUR TEETH CURLSome may ask, what's the difference? Well, alot we dare say. Hardrock is in fact only oneaspect of the headbangers scene, whereas itcan be defied in Black Metal, Heavy Metal,Trash Metal (which quite likely makes yourteeth curl), or the more melodic Hardrock,Rock or whatever the name may be.The real heavy boys are bands such as Dio,Helix, Accept, Iron Maiden, Kiss, AC/DC,Scorpions, Michael Schenker etc. TrashMetal like Motorhead, Slayer, Venom,Metallica, Twisted Sister. Heavy Rock likeDef Leppard, Lionheart, Nightranger,Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Giuffria, Shy, RobinGeorge, Survivor, Foreigner, and manyothers. Too many to name them all. But all withtheir own charms and attractions. Of courselisting all these names is not enough to explaindifferences.Metal versus Hardrock do differ in somerespects. At first in tempo, secondly in melody.Metal usually has no synthesizers underliningthe melody and drives mainly on speed, doublebassdrums (fast & loud), hammeringguitars upfront. But best would be if one listensto records just to notice the difference clearly.Motorhead versus Bon Jovi, that shouldexplain it surely!Another fact is, up until not so long ago, HeavyMetal seemed to be the sort of music, that wasa typical macho mans scene, but recently girlsseemed to have entered the scene too. Takefor example Girlschool, Lita Ford,Rockgodess, Lee Aaron, Joan Jett,Headpins, Warlock etc.

IN A STATE OF UNDRESSEvery week, singles and albums are released, with accompanying video clips, usuallyfeaturing the band in their well known leathergear, or ripped up T shirts, spike braceletts, and pretty girls who seem to be little slavesand more in a state of undress than dressed. But it all is part of the music. There's not onecountry around the world who hasn't got theirown Metal heroes, even the Japanese have avery flourishing Metal scene (Earthshaker,Loudness etc.).All in all it'll go on as long as there are guys orgirls who like to use the guitar for what it'smade for. Hit the strings hard, enjoy yourself onstage, and give the punters what they camefor: METAL -ROCK.From time to time we will pay attention tosome of the major bands. And what betteropportunity is there to start with AC/DC whowill have their new album (their 10thll) releasedthis month? An album that undoubtedly willresult in massive sales all around the world.

NON-STOP DELIRIUMThe history of AC/DC stretches over a periodof more than 10 years and brought them manysilver, golden and platinum awards.Without any doubt, they are the world'sNumber One Hardrock Band and are famousfor their exciting live act. Against tons ofdecibels, lead guitarist Angus Young springs

10

back and forth across the stage decked in aschool uniform (even carrying a satchel), jumpsup onto the speakers, or ends up playing hissolo on the back of vocalist Brian Johnsson.Their show is "non-stop delirium withoutabsolutely no holds barred", they never take astep back and deliver full power and relentlessenergy.Their new album for Atlantic has just beenreleased, entitled A Fly On The Wall. The firstsingle drawn from it will be Dangerand seesthe band in a more restrained tempo thanwe're used to, although the basic "No Frills"attitude remains the same. But let us first takea few steps back into the history of this (re-VOLT-ing ?) heavy metal outfit and follow thetraces from the very beginning. And after? ... Play their new album at highvoltage and there will be rock !!!

HYSTERIA -GENERATINGPROPORTIONS1974: AC/DC formed in Australia by Scottish-bom brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, withthe subsequent recruitment of vocalist BonScott, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist MarkEvans.1975: Their first Australian album HighVoltage is released in February. Production isby the famed team of Vanda and Young(Angus and Malcolm's older brother, GeorgeYoung, and his partner Harry Vanda). Theirsecond release Down Under T.N.T., appearsin December. Both albums earn Australianplatinum, gold and silver awards. Meanwhile,AC/DC's live following has reached hysteria -generating proportions.1976 AC/DC sign to a worldwide contract

with Atlantic Records. Their first release for the

label, High Voltage, a compilation of the firsttwo Australian albums, is unleashed. In thespring AC/DC arrive in the UK and takes thecountry by storm, with a similar reactionprovoked across Europe. Before the end of theyear, AC/DC have built up fervent Americaninterest and release a second album, DirtyDeeds Done Dirt Cheap.

UNPARELLELED ENERGY1977: The next AC/DC album, Let There BeRock, released in June and is the band's firstsimultaneous worldwide release. In thesummer, joined by British bassist Cliff Williams,AC/DC make their eagerly -anticipated debutUS tour -a marathon journey which finds themcriss-crossing the country, rapidly building truegrass roots support.1978: Two new AC/DC albums release thisyear - Powerage (May) and their first liveouting, If You Want Blood - You've Got It(November). Establishing a clear- cut pattern, each album far outsells its predecessor andthe band's loyal following swells with eachrelease. Credit for this is due to AC/DC'srelentless assault on the global concert circuit, where they ear reputation for live shows ofunparalleled energy and excitement.1979 AC/DC change strategies for their new

album. Moving their recording base to London, the band enlists famed producer Robert John'Mutt' Lange and lays down Highway To Hell.Released in July, it quickly emerges as thebreakthrough album they had long beenworking towards. Their first US platinum seller- its staggering success was repeated aroundthe world.1980 In February the rock world is shockedand saddened by the sudden death of vocalistBon Scott. After a period of reassessment, AC/DC decide to continue and, after extensiveauditions, discover the perfect match for theirinimitable style in Geordie vocalist BrianJohnson. The first album with the new line-upBack In Black is recorded in the Bahamasand New York City. Released in July, itconfirms AC/DC's ever-growing power withastonishing force, selling over eightcopies worldwide. By the end of the year, AC/DC has garnered 27 platinum or gold albumawards in eight countries.

HIGH VAULTAGE1981: Due to industry and consumer demand,

in March Atlantic releases the semi -legendaryDirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap album in theUS, where it had only previously been availableon import. Despite the fact that it wasrecorded five years earlier, AC/DC interest isrunning at such a feverish pitch that itbecomes a multi -platinum, Top Five US album, with heavy 'new Ip' airplay to boot. By themiddle of the year, AC/DC's entire US

Alan Parsons Project (new entry at12), Tears For Fears (13) and PhilCollins and Dire Straits (both 15) all hadhigher album entries. The other new entry this week for Sting(at 29), his album also belongs to the 2ndbest played album in Europe: tracks likeRussians, Love Is In The Seventh Waveand Fortress Around Your Heart areairplay favourites. Some deejay's alsoreport good reactions on the BillyHolliday- like Moon Over Bourbon Street

pageas being very suitable for nighttime play.Other high entries for Mink DeVille (withthe single Italian Shoes failing to makeimpact, it is good to see his album enterat 40) and OMD, their sixth album Crushis new at 65.With the Kayleigh single still growing afterevery play, the Marillion MisplacedChildhood album is this week's fastestmover closely followed by the double liveset of The Scorpions World Wide Life. The husband -and -wife duo Womack &Womack, release the follow-up to lastyear's beautiful Love Wars album.Although Radio M. U.S.C. Man lacks astrong single candidate, we recommendStrange And Funny, Eyes and No Relief.Summer is back (at least in some parts ofEurope) and so are the Beach Boys! Theperfect and distinctive harmonies havenot lost anything of their impact andimpress the most in tracks like GetchaBack, California Calling (a nostalgic surftrip) and the Stevie Wonder penned I DoLove You.

EU RORADIO ALBUM SMASHES This week's most played albums on European Radio.

Important!Important! Please note that Eurotipsheettakes it summerbreak for a fortnight. Therefore there are no issues on July 15and 22. We need your next tips beforeJuly 22 for the issue of July 29. We alsomove to our new exciting premises in theheart of Amsterdam opposite theParadiso (and the local jail!). So any time..feel free to visit...us) Please check ournew address on page 7 and for those ofyou sending tips by mail, send them in thenewly addressed enveloppes.

JAPANESE INDUSTRYA -Ha, we were pleasantly surprised bythe discovery of this Norwegian group onWarner with their synth based featherlightsong Take On Me, produced by AlanTamey. The song was no. 1 in theNorwegian charts last year, and it lookslike becoming Norway's most successfulexport group after Bobbysocks. Andthere are more Euro-chartmakers...Dutch group Art Company release astrong infectious follow-up to their huge

European summer hit of last year,Susanna. This Is Your Life carries thesame live-ish atmosphere, with theaudience even more present now.Japanese industry will be very delightedto hear the new single Yama-ha by the 2German sisters Humpe-Humpe; a funnyvocal succession of Japan's most well-known trade articles set against asparkling electronic backing. You shouldalso check out the Italian singer GianniTogni with his mid- tempo moody songGiulia (CGD), another Italian summerromance hit.A close -look at the European Airplay Top50 learns that Euro talent still takesdominant positions; with renewedinterest from the UK, Live Is Life fromOpus not only continues to be one ofEurope's best played singles, it alsodethroned the USA charity single from itsno 1 position (where it stayed for 10consecutive weeks). This marks the firsttime that a local hit reaches the topslot inEurope in our history. Also from Austriacomes Falco and he 'raps' himself to thetop 10. Dutch pride Mai Tai make historyas well, they have this week's best playedsingle in the UK (!) and move further upthe European Airplay charts to no 18 (29).

And to top it all off, the hottest add forEuro- radio this week is also aContinental production, Axel F byGerman artist Harold Faltermeyer isnew at 25.

LOVING YOUTaylor/Richards (of Queen fame) delivertheir second successful moody andatmospheric production (after JimmyNail) this time for ex -Undertones singerFeargal Sharkey. Loving You is FritsSpits' record of the week and no doubtwill be big in many territories. More downto earth material from Jeff Beck & RodStewart, the two legendary Sixties'artists, who are re -united for theImpressions classic People Get Ready. Two more tips this week deserving yourattention. After the indie success ofUnAmerican Broadcasting theSwamplands' band Win deserve moresuccess with the single You've Got ThePower, a dynamic and lively track wherethe catchy vocals immediately strike.Check your local Virgin company for thesingle Big New Beginning by the Scottishband The Big Dish. Well -craftedacoustic pop cast in the same mould asLloyd Cole.
