spotlight onIn our Spotlight we'll feature important radio or television personalitiesand their stations. One by one this will become a book of the top mediapeople in Europe.
TOP®ITALIA
RADIOThis week we want to put the spotlight on Top Italia Radio (TIR), very loyalcorrespondents to Eurotipsheet. At the moment there are more than 2,500 private radio stations in Italy. Most of the stations have an American way of programming with theirprograms filled with music games and news. Heavy discussions havebeen going on in the media the last few months to reduce the number ofprivate stations, but until now there is still no legislation controlling them.Top Italia Radio is the first radio circuit in Italy which ties together 100radio's on a national level and the influence of TIR on the Italian radioworld has grown substantially, The national production is divided into 4daily sections: BUONGIORNO TIR (7:00 - 8:30); GRAN MATTINO (10:30- 12:00); TUTTI INSIEME RADIOFONICAMENTE (14:30 - 16:00) andGRAN SERATA (17:30 - 19:00). This hour division leaves space for eachlocal radio to program its own airplay. The cast of professional animatorsorganize various programs on music, shows, news and holidays. Theseanimators are more than DJ's. Their interest is the direct contact with thelistener and with the vast selection of programs, to satisfy every type ofperson.Gianni de Berardinis Program Director, divides his time between radioTIR and the private TV network Canals 5. Antonio De Via is the animatorfor Gran Mattino. He used to be part of the cast of Radio and TVMontecarlo and further to that, he is a highly quoted journalist, speakerand dubber. Mauro Micheloni is one of the most known announcers forthe national TV RAI (Discoring). For the section Buongiomo there is thesparkling Nicoletta Zema and the Italian Parade is under the thumb ofSimona Ruggeri. Then there is Dido, Technical Director for TIR andMaurizio Palmeri with his particular musical verve. Last but not least thep.r. man Guido Robustelli, who takes care of the contacts withEUROTIPSHEET and is on the air every afternoon.

Having heard the album I must say, there's a lot more to them than only a couple ofgood ballads and good looks. Actually alltracks are equally good; they're powerful, subtle, well played and well produced. Sinkyour teeth in it and let it grow on you.

Nomo- The Great Unknown - AtcoDavid Batteau fronts this new American bandwho make their debut with a collection ofstrong pop songs. Batteau has worked forartists like Donna Summer, Chaka Khan andMichael Sembello and he sure knows how towrite catchy melodies. We recommend titleslike Facts Of Uve, Red Lipstick, Slave For Loveand the title track.
Uriah Heep- Equator- Portrait/EpicAfter a bit of absence, Heep are back. Differentthan before, less banging, more sophisticated, with an album well worth all the attention itgets. The tracks are excellent, if only listen toPoor Little Rich Girl and Lost One Love. Butalso worth mentioning are the bit roughersongs, such as Fools Burning and Parlytime.Produced by Tony Platt.

First of ail, congratulations should go out to theBobbysocks' La Oat Swinge, the Norwegianwinner for this years's 30th Eurovision SongContest held in Gothenburg. This cheerfulpoppy tune even defeated this year'sfavourites Germany, (Wind- Fuer Alle) andSweden (Kikki Danielsson- Bravi Prationer).Spanish, German and English (Let It Swing)versions have already been made and theoriginal, very small record company (BahamaRecords) suddenly sees itself in the middle ofall attention. This year's contest was finallyagain a festival in which quality prevailed: of the19 competing songs, no less than 14 got themaximum of 12 points from one of the votingcountries.Apart from Norway, the other Scandinaviancountries Sweden and Finland both recievedhigh ratings of the jury (Sweden was 3rd andFinland 9th).Let's see how international singles are doing inScandinavia. The USA For Africa single isobviously the most popular single in theScandinavian countries, charted high in 3 ofthe 4 countries. Although it is not charted inFinland yet, this is mainly due to the fact thatFinland only publishes a monthly hitparade andwe have no doubt this single will enter highnext month. It is surprising to see that only twointernational singles are doing well in all 4
Scandinavian countries at the same time! BillyOcean's Loverboyis popular in Sweden,Denmark and Finland, as is Foreigner's) WantTo Know What Love Is.
GOSPEL -TINGED DISCOThis week's hottest additions to the EuropeanAirplay Top 50 are Paul Hardcastle (who'ssingle /9was our Sure Hit last week) andSteve Arrington. Fee! So Real is the first singleof the ex -Slave member that breaks in Europe.First only available through import until Atlanticpicked it up. The single is already a hit in theUK and is now spreading to the Benelux andItaly as well. This gospel -tinged disco song hasa very danceable beat and was already forweeks at the top of our Maxi Route. Werecommend you to check out his albumDancin' In The Key Of Life (thank you StevieWonder?), with other favourites such asGasoline, and the titletrack, Other Hot RadioAdds are Bailey's new single, Modern Talkinglatest You Can Win If You Want and ourfavourite record, Marcia Balla by Rita Mitsouko(No, we will not stop talking about them!).A View To A Kill is Duran Duran's latest single, the theme song to the forthcoming JamesBond movie of the same name. Thiscommercial medium -tempo song has a verymemorable chorus and was composed by thegroup together with long- time Bondmusicmaster John Barry, who also producedthe instrumental B -Side. The group now joinother renowned international talents, includingShirley Bassey, Torn Jones, Paul McCartney &The Wings, Sheena Easton, Rita Coolidge andCarly Simon, who have all contributed to 007
Soundtracks over the past 23 years.Supertramp have a new single out entitledCannonball, a slow rocky tune, not quite liketheir earlier works and France was the firstcountry to report on this one. Go West's latestCall Me has all the chances of becoming thesecond European hit for them, a superb single!
YEARNING TO FALL IN LOVEThe song writing team of Status Quo, FrancisRossi and Bernard Frost, have teamed up torecord their own single called ModemRomance and although they are the world'soldest 12 bar rockers, they're still yearning tofall in love. Jules Shear (ex -leader of thedefunct formation The Polar Bears) goes'Steady' with Cyndi Duper, who co -wrote thisbeautiful single.Other Sure Hits for Re -Flex (another militantand powerful single following last year's hit ThePolitics Of Dancing), Joe Walsh (the ex -Eagle ina very raw and old fashioned beat), DavidCassidy (another good and solid love songwith Jane Birkin-like vocals on the end) andDepeche Mode's latest Shake The Disease. Our Maxi Route has some new good 12inches, the most significant one by NileRodgers, his single Let's Go Out Tonight iscatchy, very danceable and contains someinteresting rhythmic vocal dubs.

A GROWING PROGRAMMING
PHENOMENON
The terrific boom in compact discs salesaround the world in 1984 has led to a stronginterest from the European media experts. There is no doubt amongst the leaders of therecord industry that this new carrier will be ofgrowing importance in the next few years. There are already those saying that thetraditional Ip will vanish but we believe this isstill a long way off. Obviously there are a greatnumber of advantages to compact disc andthey are certainly not limited to the bettersound quality alone. During the first years ofCD existence record companies mainlypushed this "quality -sound" factor in all theirmarketing and advertisement campaigns. Butlately more and more emphasis switched tothe many other advantages of CD.The worldwide sales of CD's could have beenalmost double already, if production capacitieswould have been sufficient, but no one couldforesee the immediate impact on the public.Although during the first year of CD, salesmainly came from classical music, this pictureis now drastically changing as the major labelssucceed in releasing albums, cassettes andCD's of their major artist simultaneously. Withthe growing number of Eurostations using CD,we have decided to have a special CD sectionin Eurotipsheet every month. We will informyou about the progress of CD programming onradio and television. We will give youbackground on the technical development ofCD hardware and spotlight good new CDproduct. As you can see we also print arecommendation list for CD's in popularmusic. The choices we make for that list arenot too adventurous. This is because variousEuropean countries will only have their CD's afew weeks later than the major territories dueto the production problems.
START OF A NEW SOUND ON RADIOVarious European radio stations were pioneersin programming CD's. Probably the first chainof stations to have a special CD program everyweek was Italian Radio Montestella, a chainof 80 stations. Alberto Grippe who was thenhead of programming introduced the newsound carrier to the Italian public and sincethen various other Italian stations havefollowed. Another major station which wasconcentrating on CD at a very early stage wasTROS, Holland, still today they present aweekly CD program. There is no doubt thatmany other countries have followed and wewill inform you not only who has jumped on theCD band wagon but also how they use CD's,what special tracks they are playing and whatkind of news they present to the audience ofthis new medium.
SPONSORING DIRE STRAITSPhilips has been the biggest force to push CD,like in the old days they did with cassettes. Notonly have they developed popular hardwareand also developed excellent machines forprofessional use by radio stations (seeseparate story). Due to their direct link withvarious production facilities they have beenable to maximize sales through the availabilityof a wide range of repertoire. While last yearthere was still a very strong publicity speciallyfocused on CD, the Polygram companies arenow incorporating CD in their normal publicityfor product. This also acknowledges the fact
that CD is now an intregal part of sound carrierturnover. However there are still special waysof promoting CD to a new audience and in oneof their biggest campaigns ever, Polygramspending multi million dollars, sponsor theyear -long world tour of Phonogram group DireStraits, an act that already had very healthysales on CD. A special marketing team hasbeen formed to follow the world tour on a day-to-day basis and Philips is planning extensivetelevision advertising campaigns in keymarkets. There is also a Philips' demonstrationteam accompanying the tour and they willarrange player demonstrations at the concerthalls. A special CD including 4 Dire Straits'songs is presented to the retailers backed withan enormous amount of merchandisingmaterial including special stickers, posters, etc.etc. As you all know sponsoring rock tours hasbecome quite fashionable in recent years butsofar they were mainly done by companiesinvolved in jeans, beers, and soft drinks. This isthe first sponsorship involving various sides ofthe music industry. Continued on Page 7

GRAPHIC DISPLAYThe CD system also makes it possible torecord additional text and graphic informationon the disc which can be shown on a TVscreen during replay, adding an extradimension to the music. This information couldshow the words of a song, or a translation ofthem, for example. Supporting graphics suchas a picture of the performer or animationscould also be included. Information of this typecan be recorded on channels on a CD whichare at present not fully used, so it will have noeffect on the disc's music capacity.
CD COMBINATION UNITSThe new Philips CD Sound Machine (seeseparate photo) brings the benefits of CD toconveniently transportable integrated musicsystems. This attractively priced unit combines a built-inCD player with an auto- reverse Dolby cassettedeck, radio tuner, amplifier and detachable 2 -way loudspeakers.Compact dimensions and a handy carryinghandle make the entire unit easy to carryaround the home, or to any other locationwhere a full -function, high- quality soundcentre is needed. It can also be connected toan existing by means of a lineoutput. No doubt many other companies will followthis popular trend but there are also many inthe music industry fearing an increased home -taping problem as obviously the CD player andhigh -quality cassette deck in one machinemakes good quality recording extremely easy.
PROFESSIONAL CD SYSTEMSFOR BROADCAST
In addition to their successful range of CDplayers for use in the home, various companieshave introduced highly specialisedprofessional reproduction systems for use inmooning and broadcast studios, as well as indiscotheques and other professionalsituations. This system meets the increasingdemands from professional users who wish totake advantage of the CD system'soutstare'-= i:_nd reproduction quality ndconvert =- = operation. The ryc-== = a CD reproduction systemuses re, c2 2 :=--ves' or player units, and acompulensed control system. Commands areentered via a separate low- profile keyboard, which has two identical keypads, one for eachof the CD drives- In addition, the keyboard hasa combined numeric keypad and a quick -
search dial. One of the major requirements of theprofessional CD system is the ability to locateany desired part of a recording precisely andvery quickly. The point to be accessed can bedefined in terms of track number, time fromtrack start or time to track end, and is thenfound to an accuracy of within 13,3.milliseconds.Information is displayed to show the operatorthe exact status of both CD drives, includingabsolute time, absolute time left, the ISRCcode number of the music, the cataloguenumber of the disc and a contents list of thedisc.
Using the search dial on the keyboard, anentire disc can be scanned in either fast orslow modes, both forwards and backwards, toallow any desired cueing points to be selected.Pre-programming of operation is also possible, through which any tracks or parts of trackscan be played in any sequence. To do this, theappropriate commands are simply entered intothe system's memory via the control keyboard. This new professional CD reproduction systemprovides outstanding editing and replayfacilities for broadcast and recording studios,as well as other professional users of the CDsystem. The CD drives and control system canalso be rack -mounted.

LONDON CALLINGby Howard Marks
As mentioned in the last column, the record industry held a party forformer Radio One man Derek Chinnery. The party was at the "gardens"here in London. In attendance were people such as Errol Brown of HotChocolate, and various Radio One jocks Mike Read, Jimmy Savile, BrunoBrooks, Peter Powell, Gary Davis, Janice Long Simon Bates etc. Therewere also some very important people from the record companies too. Ispied Michael Larry/of Magnet Records. Derek Green and Bob Gracefrom China Records/Music were also there. Maurice Oberstein made aspeech, and a presentation to Derek and Mrs. Chinnery. The eveningwas a great success. It was sad to hear the other day of the recent death of D.J. Jerry Floyd.Although he never made it to radio, he has been a well respected jock in

clubs and music festivals for many years. He was up until his death theresident dj at the Marquee Club here in London. While on the subject of the Marquee Club, a man who knows a fair bitabout music, one Billy Gaff esq. is to become a partner in the club, and itwill be completely re -furbished soon. In case you do not know who BillyGaff is, maybe the names Rod Stewart, Limahl and John Cougar maymean something to you.Gwent Radio, one of the U.K.'s smallest commercial radio stationsclosed down recently. This is only the second commercial radio station inthe country to have had this happen, the first being Centre Radio up inthe midlands some months ago. It's sad to see a radio station close it'sdoors for many a reason, but for a country that was so starved ofcommercial radio for so many years, it is even sadder when some areasof the country do not support their own local station.Invicta Radio which serves various areas of Kent, has also had someproblems recently too. There have been some staff changes, and I dobelieve that former Capital Radio producer and dj Kerry Juby has joinedthe station. Former Capital man Ducar _ ::'-inson remains with the stationtoo.Over at Capital Radio, Gary CroW, . -.i played host to somenew bands playing live on his show T -e 3f Passion, Alone AgainOr, Jimmy Jimmyto name but afew. alSO played host recentlyto such names as Paul Weller & Mick _ SN-le Council, and SmileyCulture. ALEXANDRA'S
NEWS CORNER
Hi out there, how's life? Here at this front it's alright. Not really what onecould call a spectacular week but it had its charmes. Mind you, it'll bebetter soon with all these festivals and good gigs coming up. Will tell youall about it plus all my moves, afterwards, if it was worth mentioninganyway. (And that's not necessarily guaranteed!) *Now, let's move to the States, that is with that little finger on the map. This will probably interest some of you, The NEW MUSIC SEMINAR hasbeen re- scheduled, it's all happening now Sep. 26th -29th in the BigApple. Instead of the begining of August, a lot of you guys will welcomethis wise desicion. Me myself, made an unforgivable mistake. I shouldhave been nagging a bit more, louder and longer in my Bosses ear, butbeing such a nice girl, well I'm not going! That's why I'll start the naggingbit for next year RIGHT NOW (Sanny and me really wanted to go to NewYork, anyway the two of us nagging makes this certainly look stronger!).See you next time * On to the artists now. FLESH FOR LULU signed toHybrid Records May 3rd saw the release of a new mini -album, 5 tracks,it's titled Blue Sisters Swing and was produced by the band, whereas 3tracks were re -mixed by CRAIG LEON. They are touring the UK fromMay 5th till May 25th * Oh boy, another beautiful ballad by REOSPEEDWAGON is on the market called One Lonely Night. C'mon let'splay it! * Ways To Be Wicked, (no not another advice for the weekend!) isthe title to the new LONE JUSTICE single, just released *A new albumfrom our OZZY OSBOURNE can be expected in the very near future, called Ultimate Sin And Ozzy knows darn well what he's talking about.Great to see him in Battle again. I watched him being interviewed onSkytrax a couple of weeks ago and he's such a sympathetic bloke *EXPOSURE had their 3rd single via Statik released. This one's called StillThe Wind Blowes Still. The 12" version has a previously unreleased trackcalled Time Is On Our Side. The band just finished a mini UK tour incl. agig in London's Marquee *Another great gig I've missed out on was SIMON F, supporting KING atHammersmith Odeon. It was stunning, the telex said and I quote: Simongave a performance that had the girls in the audience going wild andscreaming for more at the front of the Auditorium, until the bouncersturned them away! This Simon seems to be the Eighties answer to MICKJAGGER. Thanx Carol for the info, but WHY do I always miss out on
things like that? Well, never mind, at least I can listen to his debut albumGun Control, which has just been released on Chrysalis *Who Knows What Love Is that's STRAWBERRY SWITCHBLADE's newsingle. Taken from their selftitled debut album. The track was written bythe girls and produced by PHIL THORNALLEY. Hope you've all got thealbum! * DIZZI HEIGHTS, newely signed to Parlophone, had his firstsingle released entitled The Gospel, which actually was written by PAULWELLER and first appeared on THE STYLE COUNCIL's debut album.Dizzi has now totally reworked the song and used musicians such asPAUL HARDCASTLE, CHAZ JANKEL, STEVE WHITE and the DYNAMICDUO Brass section *Talking about PAUL HARDCASTLE, he's doing marvellous with hiscurrent single, 19. Watch that boy * Yet another Parlophone signing areTHE PET SHOP BOYS. Their first single will be released May 13th in theUK. The single has been given the title Opportunities (Let's Make Lots OfMoney) Yeah, let's just do that. In case you're wondering who they are, here's the answer to all questions: NEIL TENNANT and CRIS LOWE.Production was handled by NICHOLAS FROOME and J.J. JECZALIK.(he's the producer of ART OF NOISE) * GO WEST goes Nassau, soon towork with ROBERT PALMER following a USA promo trip. The boys justreleased their second single, entitled Call Me. I think it's very good, and alot of others agree with me as it looks that this track will become a smashhit *CHAS & DAVE are in the studio recording a new double album for theautumn, but September sees them back in Australia on tour * May 17thsees the release of DEL AMITRI's debut album which was produced byHUGH JONES. The band's on a UK tour from May 1st till 23rd, currentlysupporting LLOYD COLE, THE MONOCHROME SET and one nightheadlining at the Marquee. * And finally it happened, BILLY BRAGG's I p"Lifes A Riot" has hit gold in the UK. This is a first for both BILLY and GO!DISCS. Congratulations *Top MCA act THE OAKRIDGE BOYS are appearing in a one-off concertduring the opening celebrations of the Acropolis, Nice, on May 14th. Thisis their first European appearance for 5 years * I wonder how long it willtake until the new STEVIE WONDER album is released.
