spotlight OV1In our Spotlight we'll feature important radio or television personalitiesand their stations. One by one this will become a book of the top mediapeople in Europe.

STUDIO 105 - MILAN - ALEX PERONI (with Miguel Bosi)

Alex Peroni, an ex Economy student in Milan. started off his pioneer radiostation STUDIO 105 back in February 1976. He and 6 other people builtthe station up with their own hands and only 3 years later they were No.1in Milan and growing fast, Now the station has moved onto network andthe 7 people that started it have become 50 and _Incredible but true, everyone brings home his money at the end of the day".Alex is one of those people who continue to be enthusiastic on his work, his records and the people surrounding it. Months ago when we told himabout our plans, of setting up a paper especially for the European mediapeople, he was immediately into the idea, "Oh yesl You can call me everywednesday after 4 o' clock and I will tell you my favourite records". Andthat's what we did and what we still do every wednesday 16:15 pm.Talking to Alex does not mean a strict telephone call about new entries, additions to the playlist and so on. No, it means chatting about records, the industry, holidays and hang-overs. One only has to take a look atsome of the previous Eurotipsheets and you know exactly what wemean. The way Studio 105 started is perhaps symbolic for Alex's personality.Listen to what this dynamic personality says:"...The place where Studio 105 put his first cautious steps into the airwas a tiny dusty garage in the suburbs of Milan where the sewer wasgiving back the rain when it was too much. In other words, every time itrained we had to pull on fishing boats, which is not really a hot dee-jaylook, you know. Two days before we moved to our second site, it was thesixth day of a very intense rainy springtime week and the water was risingto my knees, the storm broke loose: it seemed that every piece oflightning wanted to have its way with the tiny garage. At last a particularynasty one decided to finish its trip on our so -very -tired mixer and burnedit just one second after I took my hands off it.When we moved to our second site we found out that the owner of theplace was a madman. The mysterious hand which was keeping oncutting the aerial every night was his; the reason being our supposedoverdue rentlll"Well, after all they managed to get on and are now regarded as one of themajor stations in Italy. Although the record business in Italy is not toogood compared to a few years ago, Alex is definitely not pessimisticabout the future. "There is an Italian wave going on at the moment withartists like Gianna Nannini, Matia Bazar and Novecente. Our relation shipwith the record companies is very positive. We collaborate with them ifthey want us to wait with a certain record or work more on it. But if webelieve in something we will keep on playing it, we make the choice of ourmusic and in that sense they have no influence. We get every supportfrom them and if we want to have an artist in our show they are of greathelp in getting the artist to our studios. In this way we have had DuranDuran and Rod Stewart recently. And thanks to them we were veryproud to have had the European primeur of the new Bruce Springsteenand Rod Stewart singles at the beginning of May this year."Needless to say Alex and his collegues are more than willing to tip theirown made record 'Rio', sung in what they call a 'gramelop language', alanguage containing meaningless words ('Rio' is the only word thatmakes sense). They found out they were good singers and three weeksago the record was released and according to Paolo Grandolini, producer of Studio 105, 'Rio' moves faster than any other record on the105 charts. How peculiar...

ABOUT GLAMOUROUS GIRLS AND OVERKILL

VIOLENTFEMMESHallowed Einninti

Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground- Slash/LondonApparently as a reaction on the explosion ofsynth bands the last few years, there is abreeding ground for country (billy)/folk acts likeThe Alarm, R.E.M. and recently The DreamSyndicate, Rank & File and The ViolentFemmes. Quite astonishing this is,"ibutintriguing I must say. We hear them good oldbanjo's and fiddles back on the map. Goodstorybook patterns in the typical Dylan tradition(Death Country Songs) and the echo's of MikeScott, Tom Verlaine and occasionally LouReed (Never Tel are the characteristics of thisremarkable album. "A brilliant solution to theproblems of overkill", as one of the ads says.Indeed,

The Gun Club - The Las Vegas Story -AnimaV ChrysalisGun Club's frontman Jeffrey Lee Pierce firstgained notoriety as president of the DebbieHarry fanclub. In 1980 he formed the band inL.A. together with Kid Congo who soon afterwent to the psychobilly band The Crammps. He's back on this one again and gee.. what adistinctive guitar sound this man has!Produced by Jeff Eyrich the band moves fromtheir earlier voodoo -swamp to the moreaccessible 'essentials of rock 'n' roll. From awonderful rendition of the George Gershwin'scomposition My Man's Gone, to the obsessedBad America, resulting in the devilishMoonlight Hotel. I'm in for this gamble!

Sheila E. - In The Glamourous Life- WarnerApart from doing session work for artists likePrince, George Duke, Herbie Hancock andDiana Ross, percussion player Sheila E. isfurther known through the two latin- rockalbums she cut with her father Santana's PeteEscovedo. Now she's part of the Prince clan(the Starr Company, producing artists as TheTime and Appolonia 6) and looking at thecover this will surprise nobody. Swinging andlean arrangements, punchy percussion andPrince like keyboards (Oliver's House, The BellOf St Mark) coupled with two almost classicalorchestral themes evoking a fairy-tale likeatmosphere (Next Time Wipe The LtOstiok OffYour Collar, Noon Rendezvous),

Looking forward to it! *AZTEC CAMERA are still in the studio with MARK KNOPFLER finishingtheir album. After that they'll be going on an extensive European tour inAugust and September as support to NEIL YOUNG. This will be followedby their own tour, throughout the UK, mid September until mid October* HIGHWAY CHILE has finished recording their single entitled BrokenPromisses, drawn off their new album, untitled of yet, which will bereleased 28th of August. Their single will be available by the time thisIssue is on your desks. All was produced by SHELL SCHELLEKENS,who is known for his work with GOLDEN EARRING. Apparently thealbum has very few overdubs which creates a live atmosphere and it'swell worth listening too. Let's hope they score a hit this time, as the bandcertainly deserve it! *THE DANSE SOCIETY just returned from playing two dates in Madrid, and are recording 2 songs for Tocata & Angel Cases Show. Apparentlythe band was very impressed by the Cathedral in Barcelona (the work ofSalvador Gaudi) and it could be just possible that their new album will begothic influenced for that reason. Before going to the States for amonthlong tour (incl. a gig at the New Music Seminar), the band is inIsrael for 3 dates in Tel Aviv * Talking about Israel, the members ofMINIMAL COMPACT (they are Israelians, based in Holland) took off for amini holiday in the promised land, but it seems they are on a long holidaynow, as they all were arrested by the military police shortly after theirarrival: The boys forgot to fullfil their military service. Things obviously canslip your mind. Anyway they are now on an extensive 3 year vacation inan army camp!! Maybe the DANSE SOCIETY can visit our boys to cheerthem up? * SEE PAGE 7

HERE SHE IS AGAIN

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL has proven to be a big success. Theirsingle Each And Everyone drawn off the album Eden (produced byROBIN MILLER, known from his previous works for WEEKEND & PALEFOUNTAINS), is starting to break all over Europe. Their new singleentitled Mine was released in the UK 13th of July (a video accompaniesit), will surely do the same. * ROBIN MILLER has also produced thebrand new SADE album Diamond Life * HOWARD JONES will bereleasing a new single called Like To Get To Know You Well and BounceRight Back. These two singles have proven to be very successful duringhis recent UK and European tour, a video accompanies the releasewhich is scheduled for early August. COCKTAILS AFTER MIDNIGHT

Everything But The Girl - Eden -Blanco Y NegroNo style is sacred these days. Now this.Everything But The Girl return to soft cocktailjazz, as (each and) everyone was problablyaware of after their debut single Each AndEveryone, one of the most refreshing singlessince long. But unfortunately a whole album isa bit too much as the material tends tocomplete anonymity in the long run. Oddlyenough, a lot of the arrangements remind meof the early America and I am not quite sure ifthey like that comparison. It's hard to keepawake amongst such a collection of sleepyafter midnight songs but I did found somelovely tunes in Another Bridge and I MustConfess.

David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees- VirginAfter a long period of silence, David Sylvian, former frontman of Japan, launches his 1stsolo album. Backed with all the ex -Japanmembers (except for Mick Kam), Davidpresents us an excellent album with theemphasis on sober melancholic songs such asNostalgia, Weathered Wall and Brilliant Trees.Highlight on the album is Pulling Punches, afunky song with strong bass lines and thecharacteristic drumstyle of Steve Jansen.Although the album may for some people betoo introvert it definately deserves wider publicacceptance.

NEXT NEWS CORNER

THE GUN CLUB (with their fingers firmly on the trigger!) released theirfirst studio album since 1982 on July 29th, entitled The Las Vegas Story, with special guest appearance of MUSTANG DAVE ALVIN from theBLASTERS. The album was produced by JEFF EYRICH, who haspreviously worked with T-BONE-BURNE1T, THE BLASTERS & RANK'N' FILE among others * 22nd of June saw the release of a new singleby MESSENGERS, entitled Great Institutions. It was released on MIDGEURE's Musicfest label Through Chrysalis Records and was alsoproduced by Midge Ure. The Messengers are the first signing to his labeland this is their second single. The band is currently supporting &providing backing vocals for ULTRAVOX on their worldtour *MICK JAGGER is currently in the studio with producer Bill Laswell(Material), working on his first solo album. Release can be expected inautumn * THE TIME BANDITS, a Dutch band who are currentlysuccessful overhere, seem to have made it in other countries as well, asthey achieved a no 1 chart position with their single Shooting Love inNew Zealand! * Another name to add onto the list of Dutch bands doinggreat in other parts of the world besides our own, is THE ARTCOMPANY, to be found in various charts all over the world with Susanna.Their new single Get It Out Of Your Head, is heading for the same! * TheDutch band BRAAK released a mini album, entitled lk Weet Wat Je Lust (IKnow What Your Taste Is). Their new single called Lachen Met DeMeiden (Laughing With The Girls) was produced by WILLEM ENNES(known from his work for SOLUTION). Tourdates are soon to beannounced in Holland - Belgium - Germany. Italy will probably releasetheir new single too. (It will be sung in Italian, which makes things easierto understand. Occasionaly the band is singing in English but they mainlyhandle the Dutch Language!) *RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS released their selftitled album. Their powerrapping vocals have made the band (following a quote from Julie: "Amust to see among Hollywood Hipsters!") *NIGHTRANGER released their second album entitled MidnightMadness. Until now two singles have been drawn of from this album.First, Sister Christian & their current single When You Close Your Eyes, which enjoyes a huge airplay in The States (well deserved by the way!).Brad, their very talented guitarist, helped out OZZY OSBORNE on histour last year. Ozzy tried to recruit him for his band, but Brad wanted tostay on with NIGHTRANGER, as he believed strongly in their success;now proven that he made the right decision. Their first album DawnPatrol was simply stunning (guitarwork like firework!). Thisnew albumshould break them! When You Close Your Eyes has only been released

Special AKA - In The Studio- ChrysalisThis album follows their much respectedtribute to Nelson Mandela, the leader of thebanned South African Liberation movement, who has been imprisoned in South Africa since1962. A lot of the material on side 1 is in linewith the material of the later (More) Specialsand on the whole not that interesting (apartfrom perhaps What I Like Most about You IsYour Girldfriend- a favourite of Costello). Onside 2 though Jerry Dammers seems to havegrip on the material again. Racist Friend, WarCrimes and Alcohol (Ray Davies?) are originalpop songs and contending for a single release.

as a single in the States, in all other countries Sister Christian is thecurrent single. But plans to release it are made and scheduled for end ofAugust *THE SIMPLE MINDS are supporting THE PRETENDERS on their UStour, which is nice for the newly weds. As usually musicans havedifficulties to keep up a relationship; Chrissie & Jim are lucky to be ontour together! * HELIX are playing at the New Reading Festival in Lilfordon August 26th *THE THOMPSON TWINS held a headline making party for over 1,000guests at a big country house (stocks) outside of London. Amongst theguests who enjoyed champagne plus spectacular fireworks were DuranDuran, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones,Andy Summer of the Police, Meatloaf, Marilyn, Imagination, Blancmangeand many others. THOMPSON TWINS' new single Sister Of Mercy iscurrently high in all charts. In August and September an extensive UStour is about to start * Talking about parties, MUSIC BOX had a fewgreat parties going on last week to celebrate their independence. Firstthe launch of a movie channel 'Premiere', next day lunch at theKesington Roof Gardens to demonstrate to the journalists from all overthe world the new independent Music Box and evenings at London'sStringfellows, a direct on the air launch; button was pushed by Midge Ureof ULTRAVOX. Avery successful party, well organized and pleasantlyarranged. Good luck to all of MUSIC BOX!! *
