Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

This week sees the confirmation that US competitionauthorities have started a preliminary investigation intoPressplay and MusicNet, while the European Commis-sion is said to be keeping an interested eye on these ven-tures.

Vivendi Universal vice-chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr.is fuming. How can these services be investigated whenthey haven't made a cent yet and that nobody knows whattheir business model is going to be?

He's got a point, but regulators are also doing their jobby looking at what looks like a potential duopoly domi-nating the music online market. Imagine if car manufac-turers joined forces so that car retailers would only haveaccess to two distribution platforms-this would not gounnoticed from competition authorities.

Both Pressplay and MusicNet claim that they are openplatforms and that they will cross -license their respectiverepertoire and also license repertoire from indie labels.

Yes, but it's not enough to clear them of suspicion.Being an open platform does not mean that the business

conditions they offer are acceptable. Several indie labelsor indie label's organisations have been trying toapproach the two platforms with a view to license theirrepertoire and have been less than impressed by the con-ditions they were proposed.

Meanwhile, news has come this week that Napsterwill now not be launching its legitimate paid -for serviceuntil next year, claiming that difficulties in accessinglegitimate content are responsible for the delay. Napster'sproblems just augment delays in the launching of bothPressplay and MusicNet, the two music online platformsbacked by the majors.

This week's developments come as the latest JupiterMMXI figures show that online music consumption is notdiminishing, but that consuminghabits are changing. Once dominatedby Napster, the market is now theplayground of dozens of systems, although none have re -captured theground that Napster covered at itspeak.

The online music world is clearlygoing through a transitional process.

The thirst for online music is stillstrong-but where are the legitimateplatforms?

NRK Petre boss ups local shareby Siri Stavenes Dove

OsLo - Norwegian publicbroadcaster NRK's youth sta-tion Petre is to increase itsshare of domestic product.

In Marius Lillelien'sfirst move as new stationmanager (M&M November3) he announced that thecurrent 16%-17% share ofNorwegian music playedon the station will beupped by 10%.

'We should be able toplay 25% minimum," saysLillelien. "It's a cultural -political aimfor me. If we increase our Norwegianmusic share we will contribute moreto promoting Norwegian culture. Wecan contribute to a larger diversity

and more Norwegian music will beheard, and perhaps also sold."

Since its launch in 1993,one of Petre's stated aimshas been to find and pro-mote new talent. Lilleliensays the 10% will be usedto chart their progress.

"We've played unsignedacts, and sometimes theyhave got contracts becausewe have played them. Butwe have been criticised fornot following up theartists," he says. "To me it'simportant that Norwegian

artists who are within our formatshould feel that they have a homehere."

A&R Domestic at Warner MusicNorway, Terje Pedersen, welcomes

    Lillelien

the change. "Marius Lillelien hasdone the right thing," he says. "Ibelieve it's very important that thenew Petre boss is signalling that hewants to give Norwegian music moreself-confidence."

Lillelien says that the aim of 25%Norwegian music is an achievableone. "Our A -list has contained about50% Norwegian material over the lastfew weeks," he says. "There isbreadth in Norwegian pop music nowand it's absolutely possible to come upto 25%."

Lillelien says that as there are, forexample, very few Norwegian R&Bacts, specialist shows' local share willbe compensated for in other pro-grammes. "This is not mathematics,it's about the output over a period ofsix months," he says.

Radiomafia triumphs at Finnish awardsby Jonathan Mander

HELSINKI - Public CHR stationRadiomafia won three FinnishIndustry Awards at the annual Musi-ikki & Media gathering held for the12th time in Tampere on October 25.

The station won awards for thebest music media, best radio stationand best radio journalist at theannual four -day trade conferencewhich was deemed a success byorganisers.

"We had 540 people attending thisyear, which is more than everbefore," says Jussi Santalahti, man-aging director of the organisersMusiikki & Media Tapahtumat."Also more people outside the musicindustry, from telecoms and newmedia companies, attended."

The award for the bestlocal radio station went toRadio Helsinki, whichaunched on the internet ayear ago and won an FMlicence last spring. Thestation, which is mainlydevoted to music, does notadhere to a format or havea playlist.

Organiser Jussi Santa-lahti said he believed one

of the main attractions of the confer-ence is to give music business profes-sionals a chance to meet other peoplein the industry and to network.Organisers also announced that Lev-itation, the export seminar will nothappen next year.

WebCast files for insolvencyby Michael Lawton

BERLIN - In the latest caseof high hopes and lowturnover, the company thatwas once Germany's lead-ing Internet radio providerhas filed for insolvency.

At its height, the Web -Cast Media Group employed23 staff and had enoughserver capacity on its mainproduct, dasWebradio.de, toallow for 100,000 people totune in simultaneously.

"We were doing well,"says the group's founderStefan Schwenk, "fully ontarget, and turning overmore money than any otherGerman Internet station."

Schwenk, who has expe-rience in building up con-ventional radio stations, founded the group about 18

months ago in the beliefthat most existing onlineoutlets lacked basic radiobusiness skills.

    DasWebradio.de launchedas a live, 24 -hour mass

withconventional programmingfeatures such as hourly newsbulletins. The company wonclients such as yahoo.de, forwhom it developed yahoo.fm,and even set up an advertis-ing sales house to representother online stations.

Then came the first, high -

    appeal radio station

profile new economy failuresand, says Schwenk, "sinceSeptember 11, advertisinghas simply collapsed." Nowwith a staff of three, dasWe-bradio.de is mainly automat-ed, and server capacity hasbeen drastically reduced.

With the companyhoused in one of Berlin'smost fashionable areas on afive-year lease, Schwenksays the only option is toapply for insolvency.

Yet, despite the financialconcerns, Schwenk says hewants to continue to rundasWebradio.de. "I want torun it at a low-level. Thestation has had a lot ofmoney put into it and it'svery well known," he says."And then I hope it'll bepossible to build it up againin two or three years' time."

Morandini succeeds Sabot at LV & Coby Joanna Shore

PARIS - ChristopheSabot (pictured) hasbeen replaced asmanaging directorof LV & Co by Jean -Marc Morandini, until now the radiogroup's news, sched-uling and marketing direc-tor.

Sabot, previously pro-gramme director of theNRJ Group, joined LV & Coin August last year on amission to revive thegroup's two ailing radio sta-tions, gold network MFMand Paris CHR stationRadio Voltage. According toa statement from LV & Co,Sabot accomplished his

    brief "successfully".Morandini, who will also

retain his currentresponsibilities forthe time being, sayshe will continue toconcentrate effortson the two stationsand that there willbe no need to change

strategy, since "both MFMand Voltage have nearlydoubled their audiences inthe past year."

MFM has alreadyapplied to France's broad-cast authority the CSA toincrease its current rosterof 70 or so frequencies.Morandini says the factthat MFM lacks frequen-cies in places such asToulouse and Lille is of

"great concern". Addingmore frequencies he says,"now remains the only waywe will be able to develop."

Radio Voltage, on theother hand, is set to developits local news program-ming, while continuing 'totarget 15-35 year olds withhit music.

As to the reasons forSabot's departure, Moran-dini speculates that the for-mer NRJ programmer wasready for "new challenges"after having successfullyachieved what he had setout to do at LV & Co.

A new scheduling man-ager and deputy generalmanager is expected to beappointed shortly to helpease Morandini's workload.

According to Survey IVof 2001 from ratings bodyRUAB-broadly coveringthe third quarter of theyear-the dailyreach for com-mercial sta-tions stands at29.7%, downfrom 32.3% lastquarter. Publicbroadcaster SR's share, meanwhile, has nudged upto 52.5% from 52.4% lastquarter. The communityradio sector also increasedreach, from 2.4% to 2.9%.

While commercial radiohas traditionally lost audi-ence in the third quarter, amajor factor in the larger -than -usual downturn maybe a change in listening

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the big winner in the purveywas public radio SR'snews/talk station P1, whichincreased its daily reach from10.4% to 11.4%, quarter -on -quarter. SR's full -service localnetwork P4 also increased itsreach, from 35.3% to 35.8%,while CHR network NRJcrashed a whole percentagepoint to 7.2%. At 9.1%, HotAC broadcaster Rix FMretains its status as the mostpopular commercial network, despite losing 0.5% of itsdaily reach.

ATHENS - Amid the cur-rent gloom surrounding theGreek record industry, anew label is launching intothe Greek/world musicmarket.

Distributed locallythrough Universal, indie E -terra launched in Octoberwith the release of threeCDs: the acid jazz -orientedLiberte by Kad Achouri; neo-flamenco Turquoise Dreamwith Mario Reyes (of GipsyKings' fame); and the newage -oriented Kosmon by localband Avaton.

Despite making itsdebut with foreign artists,E -terra claims it is primar-

    ily interested in promotinglocal acts.

"Reyes or Kad may not beGreek," E -terra's head of PRVangelis Perakis tells M&M,"but Greece is definitelythere in the contribution oflocal musicians playing onthat same album."

The company-thebrainchild of Greek entre-preneur Yiannis Karikas-plans to tackle foreign mar-kets by initiating distribu-tion deals with producersand DJs worldwide, withEurope its initial target.

Perakis believes worldmusic festivals may be E -terra's ticket to those markets.

"Festivals secure mediaexposure," he says. "Once

audiences hear whatGreece has to offer, they'llwant more."

Locally, the label plansto market its productthrough a two-day festival(November 30 -December 1)featuring the label's Greekand foreign artists.

"This event is just a way ofbringing people closer togeth-er through music and show-ing them who we are andwhat E -terra is all about,"says Perakis.

Perakis-also a radioproducer at national ACstation Melodia FM-willbe hosting two, four-hourradio shows highlightingworld music as part of thefestival.

  • RADIO ACTIVE

Introducing life -stage demographicsTraditionally, most radio stations have defined their tar-get audiences primarily by age demographic. But USradio consultant Valerie Geller (pictured) argues thatthis approach is outdated, and that instead of makingdecisions based around age, stations should instead befocusing on the audience's lifestyles and lifestages.

The time has come to re -thinkthe way we've looked at radioaudiences. The concept of"Life -Stage Demographics"challenges radio stations to

rethink the way they programmeand market their stations. Thisresearch was developed through acombination of audience researchand focus groups.

The pivotal moment for me camewhen, watching a focus group thatconsisted of women between theages of 23 and 54, a 23 -year old anda 51 -year old bonded before the ses-sion began and enthusiasticallystarted talking about how young istoo young for baby swimminglessons, what people -carrier to buyand where to stay at Disney World. Here were two women, 28 yearsapart, nearly three generationsapart, yet they had similar lifestylesand the exact same interests!

That was the moment a lightbulb went off in my head. We beganexamining research and focusgroup results, and developed a sys-tem that could effectively tap intothe listener's lifestyle and life -stages. Armed with this informa-tion, stations could then make pro-gramming and marketing deci-sions based on what was importantto their listeners.

In the radio industry we've pro-grammed and sold in terms of target-ed demographics for so long thatwe've missed out on an importantfact: our culture is changing. I workwith hugely successful radio stationsall around the world, and one secretthat they all have in common is thatthey cross demographic lines. Key ele-ments to all successful stations?Their on -air personalities speak thetruth, have a good sense of humour, provide new and useful information, have fun and, most importantly, theyrelate to the listeners. These stationsare not boring. They cross demo-graphic lines because good entertain-ment attracts listeners of all ages. And based on our new research, it isthe lifestyle and life -stage of each per-son that dictates what appeals to dif-ferent groups of listeners.

Here are some of today's reali-ties: age doesn't determine thelifestyle or life -stage of a listener.

55 years old today is not what 55years old has been in the past.Consider the fact that Cher, OliverStone and Sylvester Stallone allblew out 55 candles on their birth-day cake this year. People are livinglonger because of advanced medicalbreakthroughs and an emphasis onleading a healthier lifestyle. Inaddition, 55-plusers have more dis-

posable income to spend on leisureactivities, vitamins and exerciseequipment, travel, clothing, cars, gadgets and more.

A 44 -year -old single female pro-fessional might be living the samelifestyle as a 23 -year -old singlewoman working in the big city(both comfortable with TV showSex In The City). In sharp contrast,a 44 -year -old mother of three mightlead a similar lifestyle to that of a23-yearold with a couple of kids inthe suburbs. The "real" chronologi-cal age of the listener doesn't reallymatter as much as the "lifestyle" ofthe listener.

A recently divorced 51 -year -oldman might spend his cash ondesigner clothing, a sports car, meals at expensive restaurants andthe best seats at sporting events. His radio listening habits mightinclude rock, talk, sports or person-ality radio, and his lifestyle couldmirror that of a 26 -year old singleexecutive who spends his time andmoney in roughly the same way.

Every station appeals to a vari-ety of listeners who are experienc-ing different life -stages. However, there are always one or two life -stage categories that represent themajority of your listeners.

To help you identify your own sta-tions' life -stage audience, I've brokenout the categories in the following way:

KidsThere are as many kinds of kids, teenagers and young people asthere are people. This group can bedivided into four groups:Academic fast track-"I want to be adoctor so I study all the time."Sports/Athletic-Spends a lot of timeplaying football or other sports.Fun, not serious-"I spend all myfree time at the shopping mallhanging out with my friends. I'llworry about my future later on."The "Perennial Kid"-This type ofperson can be 18 to 35 years old, oreven older! Although this personmight be attending college or isstill living at home, they are mak-ing important independent spend-ing decisions. One 36 -year -old manin a focus group admitted he stillbrought his laundry home for hismum to wash!

Decision pending"I have no idea what I want to dowith my life." At this stage, usuallyin a person's late teens or 20s, theyare still trying to figure out whothey are, what career path theywant to take and how they want tolive their life. Because they haven't

decided on a career path, this per-son might be working in a low -pay-ing job or in an entry-level position.

Career commitmentGetting serious about one's futureand dedicating a lot of time andenergy into making it work. Thistype of person might be attendingcollege, entering the businessworld or starting a new career.

Before you buy a houseRenters live a vastly differentlifestyle than homeowners. In addi-tion, people who live alone live adramatically different lifestylethan couples or roommates.

After you buy a houseThe lifestyle here changes drasti-cally. Homeowners begin to watchhome improvement shows. Theyhang out at DIY stores. They buyexpensive items for their houseinstead of spending money on spon-taneous trips. They've cut down onrestaurant spending and they stayat home more.

Living single: the lonerlifestyleThey spend, spend, and spend onthemselves.

Living as a couple: commit-ed relationship or marriageThey want to do activities together. They consult with each other onmajor decisions and expenditures.

People with kidsThis group crosses many demo-graphics. If you were to attend aUS "Mommy and Me" class, themothers might range in age from17 to 51. Amazingly, they might allhave similar interests.

People without kidsAgain, age doesn't particularly mat-ter here. In our research, the"Without Kids" couples demonstrat-ed many notable specific differ-ences from the "With Kids" group("Without Kids" lifestagers rarelycarried life insurance, for example). They went to bed at various hours, and did not particularly keep to apredictable, set routine. In thislifestage, there is much more spon-taneous travel, evenings out, andoften a stronger work (more hoursto give) commitment.

Good HealthPeople in good health enjoy sports, take trips and tend to be cultural-ly rich and adventurous.

People in ill healthThis can hit a person at any life -stage. In addition, many childrenin their 30s, 40s and 50s are nowfaced with becoming their parent'scarer and making decisions abouttheir health. Health issues and dis-ease prevention are hot topics forpeople in most life -stages.

Special interest groupsThis category is growing each day. We've already seen religious, gay andsports radio stations taking to the airin Europe, as well as successful TVprogramming such as ChangingRooms, The Naked Chef and TheAntiques Road Show in the UK, forexample. People who are passionateabout specific areas of interest crossover every demographic. Specialinterest groups are a demographic,no matter what their ages!

Class and educationWe've also been foolish in the past fordefining listeners by race or incomelevels. In reality, it's much moredefined by education and "class" thanincome. A listener may be dirt poor, but educated, listening to the samestation as the guy in the next car whois a multi -millionaire. In the US, anupper class or middle class AfricanAmerican, Hispanic or Asian personhas similar concerns to that of anupper or middle class Anglo-Saxon.Programmers worry too much about"targeting" a racial demographicrather than a life -stage or lifestyle. Asubset of yet another group includespeople with very little education orthose who are making below -averagesalaries than those in their demo-graphic, regardless of age or race.

So, how does all this affect radio? With all the talk of consolidation, niche programming and otherbroadcast trends in the new millen-nium, it might make sense to broad-en traditional broadcast demo-graphic thinking and start focusingon programming and advertisingthat appeals directly to listeners attheir various life -stages, instead ofworrying about how many yearsthey've lived their life.

The best of times for Laura Pausiniby Mark Worden

To enter your domestic album chart at number oneand M&M's European Top 100 Albums at number12 is some achievement. To do so with a Best Ofpackage when you are still in your twenties isremarkable.

The Best Of Laura Pausini (CGD EastWest/Warner Music Italy) was released worldwideon October 12 and had first week sales in Italyalone of 150,000 units, something Warner MusicItaly's managing director, Massimo Giuliano, describes as " a most satisfying result in what is adifficult time for the music industry". Giuliano addsthat, "Laura's last album, Tra Te E Il Mare, did amillion copies worldwide and this time we're aim-ing for 1.5 million, with at least 400,000 for Italy."

The new album, which chronicles a steady flowof hits since the artist made her debut as a school-girl at the 1993 Sanremo Festival, is available inboth Italian and Spanish.

In spite of the "Best of" title, there are two newtracks, including the single Ritorno Da Te , whichwent into the top five in Italy's Top NationalSellers. Carlo Antonucci, head of music at the CHRnetwork Radio Dimensione Suono, is "giving it highrotation, about 30 plays a week, as it's perfect forour format. It's also backed by a strong video."

The Italian version is targeted at all Europeanterritories except Spain. The artist is already busypromoting the Spanish version, Lo Mejor De Laura

Pausini, having kicked off a Latin America tour witha sell-out show in Miami. In her career Pausini hasproved to be phenomenally effective in the LatinAmerican market and she was actually in LosAngeles to hear the result of her four Latin Grammynominations on the day of the World Trade Centerattacks. She tells M&M, "singing in Spanish provedto be easy for me because, even if I didn't speak thelanguage at first, the cadence was similar to that ofthe dialect spoken in my native Bologna area."

An ability to sing in Spanish is, however, onlypart of her export success story, which began inItaly, Holland and Belgium. She admits, with dis-arming modesty, "this happened at a time whenthere was greater interest in Italian music, so Iguess I was a bit lucky." Lucky or not, Pausini hassold 16 million albums in the course of her careerand in April 2002 is due to release an originalEnglish language album in North America on theAtlantic label. For RDS' Antonucci her internation-al success can be explained by the fact "she's adown-to-earth girl who sings about everyday thingsand most people can identify with that. The differ-ence is she happens to have an amazing voice, which also works perfectly in Spanish."

Warner's Giuliano considers that Pausini's inter-national success is also due to the fact that "shesings the kind of melodic pop music that peopleexpect from Italy. I don't think it's a coincidencethat both she and Eros Ramazzotti do so wellabroad."

Hanah goes to Hollywoodby Siri Stavenes Dove

When she attended this year'sMidem with Lou Pearlman, managerof Britney Spears, Backstreet Boysand 'N Sync, 16 year -old Norwegiansinger songwriter Hanah wasunknown. Ten months on and hersingle Hollywood Lie not only topsNorwegian airplay charts, but alsoentered the Norwegian Top NationalSellers at number four.

"A lot of things have happenedvery quickly," admits the artist, realname Linn Christel Hanah Johnsen.Working with producer Terry Adams(Craig David, Al) in the UK, theEMG-signed Hanahhas followed an alterna-tive route to most of theteen stars. Instead ofbeing "dressed up as aBarbie doll", as shesays, Hanah could beconsidered the anti-Britney, with dread-locks, piercings andbags of attitude.

Hanah has a goodpedigree, being thedaughter of JonJohnsen who was, until recently, managing director of Scandinavianmusic group EMG.

Inspired by Alanis Morrissetteand Sheryl Crow, Hanah has written70% of the songs on debut albumMyself, which will be released inNorway on November 12.

In spite of her tender years,Hanah's debut single Summer IsComing came out on the DaWorkslabel in summer 2000, followed by acover of Neil Young's Heart Of Gold, but neither came close to the success

of Hollywood Lie. "They were not verywell thoughtabout the singles. What has helpedthe chart position of Hollywood Lie-which pokes fun at the likes ofBritney and the Spice Girls-was awell -received performance at thisyear's Norwegian commercial musicHitawards on September 15. "Itseems that Hitawards was thespringboard," acknowledges EMGA&R executive and former A -ha man-ager Erling Johannessen. "She wentstraight to people's hearts."

Head of music at hot AC stationEgil Houeland has playlistedHollywood Lie. "It's catchy enough

    and I am not surprisedit's become a hit. But ifit's because it's Hanahor because it's anti-Britney I don't know."

EMG's plan is towork the album inNorway, and then startwith Sweden andDenmark in Januaryprior to a full Europeanrollout. Next up is therelease of another sin-gle, There Will Never Be

Another You, "coming out whenHollywood Lie is dying out, probablymid -November," says Johannessen.

In the New Year, Hanah is off toFlorida to be groomed at LouPearlman's management companyTrans Continental's "star factory".She will be trained in dealing withthe media, choreography and every-thing an aspiring popstar needs toknow. But Johannessen will not lether be turned into a regular teenstar. "We don't want her polished,"he says.

    DANCE GROOVESby Gary Smith

STUCK IN A TRANCEIn DJ Garry's world it is forever1998. The grooves on DreamUniverse (Xtravagan7a/UK) are asstraight as an autobahn while everychord soars towards heaven and themelodies tinkle and tease agreeably.Trance by any other name, alsoknown as the form that refused todie. Dream Universe is well paced, tasteful in its use of pizzicatostrings on the bridge and has aHUGE sound. Already charted inBelgium (top 10) and now pickingup plays in the UK from JudgeJules on national CHR BBC Radio 1and Graham Gold and Steve Smarton London dance station KISS FM.

STILL WELL ROCKINGA welcome return for Rockwell'spaean to paranoia, Somebody (IsWatching Me), re -jigged by SZ onUniversal France's Sound ofBarclay label. The track, whichsounds just as fresh as it did in the'80s, is undeniably an evergreenthat has also benefited from SZ'sclub touches. Liberal use of the lowfilters and a subtle reinforcement ofthe groove have resulted in an alto-gether tougher version. It remainsvocal heavy enough to be program-mable and is slamming enough tofill dancefloors. A hit all over again?

TIJUANA BASSThe extraordinary bass sound thatappears at the beginning of NortecCollective's Bostich-Polaris from TheTijuana Sessions-Volume 1 EP.

(Palm Pictures/UK) is shocking butno more so than what follows. Madeby a tuba quite possibly, or a whale, the bass sound sets the tone for arecord that takes traditional Mexicanmusic and turns it into somethingwild, chaotic, tuneful, seductive, con-temporary and utterly different. Thegroup describe their sound asMextronica which is as good a nameas any. It marks the beginning of animportant new sub -genre.

PASTORAL ELECTRONICAIn a world awash with electronicmusic that sounds agreeable butthat is often, ultimately, pointlessthe Minotaur Shock debut Chiff-Chaffs & Willow Warblers(Melodic/UK) is a pointed exception. The title says it all; this is downtem-po electronica that bravely attemptsto represent the pastoral life.Thankfully, the album avoids sam-pled animals and gurgling streamsin favour of carefully worked themesand melodies that actually do con-jure up a sense of the natural.Stylistically, in its electro-acoustictrilling and genteel overall charac-ter, the music superficially resem-bles the Penguin Café Orchestra butC -C& WW goes much further.Chance Anthem is a dark and brood-ing tune that precedes the nervy, strangely effective and starkly beau-tiful The Range. Piano is once againthe lead instrument on the playfullytitled, lilting Local Violin Shop whileThree Magpies, with its orientalmelody, harpsichord and multifari-ous background scrabblings, has aJohn Barry-ish feel.

CHERTHE MUSIC'S No GOODWITHOUT YOU(WEA)Release date: November 6Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierr, aka Cher, is back onEuropean radio with anoth-er vocoder-enhanced track,

following the massive success of 1998's Believe. The55 -year old actress/singer has again teamed upwith production team Brian Rawlings and MarkTaylor on The Music's No Good Without You, thefirst single off forthcoming album Living Proof. "Itcould prove to be just a big a radio hit as Believe,"predicts Morten Bach, programme director at CHRstation Radio ABC in Randers, Denmark, althoughhe considers it to be "not as immediate as Believewas." Kasper Hesselfeldt, head of music at Hot ACstation Radio Mega/Hillerd, also in Denmark, lovesthe track. "Fantastic! She successfully repeats thetrick [of] Believe. I find The Music's No Good With-out You simply unavoidable with its catchy retro-feel, modern dance -beat, trance sounds and a killerchorus even though it takes some getting used to.The song should appeal to wide range of formatsand will probably hit our A -list shortly," Hes-selfeldt says. BOMFUNK MC'SSUPER ELECTRIC(Epidrome/Sony)Release Date: October 8(Continental Europe)Finland's Bomfunk MC'sexploded onto the Euro-pean music scene earlylast year with the conti-

nent's biggest -selling single of 2000-Freestyler -which sold in excess of 2.2 millionunits. Fronted by DJ Gismo and rapper cumMC B.O.W. (Brother Of Words), the Bomfunkshave not been resting on their laurels, howev-er, and are currently working on an as -yet -untitled second album, scheduled for releasein February or March 2002. This track is aheady brew of pumping electronic beats and astrong melody, not unlike '80s efforts by TheJozun Crew and Afrika Bambaata. A tour ofnorthern Europe will take place betweenNovember 28 and December 16. Andy Roberts, programme director at London dance stationKiss 100 is one of the few radio programmerswho have bucked the "wait and see" trend andprogrammed the track straight away. "WhenFreestyler came out we went with it straightaway because it was very strong," saysRoberts. "This one has strong, old school hiphop overtones-a genre which is making acomeback of sorts-and also boasts a verystrong chorus which definitely adds to itsradio appeal." RC
