On behalf of the administration and faculty at Michigan City High School, I want to extend a very Happy New Year to all of our MCHS students, parents, and community members. Counselors’ Corner

Hard to believe we’re in the second semester already. For counse-lors that means we are looking ahead to the next school year. Counselors met with current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, to go over next year course selections. Students have until Fri-day, January 17th to finalize their selections through google forms. Students have been encouraged to work with parents/guardians regarding their course selections. It is important that students are working hard and staying on track to meet graduation requirements. Parent Access is a great tool for parent/guardians to keep track of their students’ progress. To our seniors, don’t slow down. You’re almost there!!!

Student Council News

Student Council would like to thank all of those who participated in and helped with our Canned Food Drive. Together the students at MC High School collected 1,755 food items for the food bank! At the Sadie Hawkins Dance, students contributed 337 items. The top 3 classes who collected the most and won donut parties for their classes are as follows: Mr. Tsugawa's students donated 372 non-perishables, Mr. Jasicki's class collected 270 items, and Ms. Koza's class contributed 249 food items. A special shout out to Betsy Kohn for coordinating everything, as well as our Student Council volunteers, the workers on the collection bus and Danielle Siebt's class members for helping to count and load items so quickly and efficiently. We are all so grateful to you for your assistance. This semester will be a busy one for Student Council. We will be planning our Winterfest activities, Class Olympics, Pep Session, Spirit Week Dress up Days and hallway decorations. We are also looking forward to the Talent Show which will be scheduled for sometime this spring. Audition dates will soon be an-nounced. Please bring us your talents! We are looking to show-case the best and the brightest that Michigan City has to of-fer! Stay tuned for more information and Happy New Year!

Physical Education

and

Health Department

Greetings from the Physical Education and Health Department! Happy New Year! We are excited to start another semester of learning and developing in our Health and PE classes. In the gym students who are new and/or returning will be going through swimming rotations again. Students will swim 15 - 19 days every nine weeks. When students are not swimming, they are starting units in the gym portion of the class. This grading pe-riod we will be starting basic basketball, team handball, and floor hockey. Students should be excited for a great semester of units and activities. In the weight room, students are learning valuable fitness experi-ence. Students are participating in circuits maintaining cardio, and strengthening upper and lower body. Some students are working off those Christmas calories which is a lesson we should all learn from our students in weight training. Good work guys! In health class, students are beginning the first few chapters of health as well as learning the expectations of their new class. There is a lot in store for our students this semester as they take the journey of evaluating their own healthy lifestyle. Go Wolves!

Nutrition and Wellness The students worked on cookie demonstrations. They had to prepare a batch of cookies in front of the class. There was your standard chocolate chip cookie to a German sugar cookie. A unique cookie was a monster cookie; it was delicious! Monster Cookies PREP: 15 MINUTES COOK: 20 MINUTES YIELD: 24 COOKIES Ingredients 1 cup sugar 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 3 large eggs 1 1/2 cups peanut butter (smooth or chunky) 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 1/2 cups oats (Old Fashioned or Quick) 1 cup mini M&Ms 1 cup mini chocolate chips Instructions Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or Silpat bak-ing mats. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream togeth-er the sugar, brown sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and then beat in the peanut butter, vanilla, baking soda, and salt until well com-bined. Add the oats and mix until combined, then add the mini M&Ms and mini-chocolate chips. Scoop 2-to 3-tablespoon mounds of the dough onto the prepared bak-ing sheets, spacing the mounds at least 2 inches apart. Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes, then remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheets before transferring them to a rack to cool completely.

Advance Nutrition and Wellness The student completed their international projects A few of the country they studied were France, Italy, Poland, and China We learned about the country's history: traditions, beliefs, and cultural rituals. Why they use certain foods, equipment, and if their traditions, beliefs, and rituals af-fected the foods they eat. Finally, they had to prepare a dish from their country of choice. Two of our students prepared Jerk Chicken, which origins from Jamaica. It was flavor-ful! Jerk Chicken Servings: 10 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 50 minutes Marinating Time: 3 hours Ingredients 10 bone-in skin-on chicken pieces, thighs and legs (about 3 lbs), trim excess fat and skin 6 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces* 4 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed 2 habanero peppers (or scotch bonnet), stem removed** 1 1/2 -inch piece ginger, peeled and sliced 1/3 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 cup soy sauce 1 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar

Page 15 January 2020

1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp ground allspice 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg Instructions Place chicken pieces in a gallon-size resealable bag. Add remaining ingredients to a food processor and several times to chop (it should be somewhat coarse). Pour mix-ture over chicken in bag, seal bag while pressing out excess air, then rub marinade over chicken. Let rest in the refrigerator for 3 - 24 hours. Oven instructions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line an 18 by 13-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Remove chicken from marinade. Arrange piec-es on the baking sheet, leaving space between them. Bake in the preheated oven until cooked through, about 45 - 50 minutes, while broiling during the last few minutes for better browning. Or grill instructions: preheat a gas grill to medium-high heat (about 400 degrees.) Clean grill grates and rub lightly with oil using tongs and an oiled paper towel. Grill until chicken is cooked through, turning occasional-ly (and reducing burning temperature slightly if it's browning too quickly) about 30 minutes.

MCHS MCJROTC EARNS AWARDS AT PORTAGE MILITARY DRILL MEET

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) earned awards at the Portage High School mili-tary drill competition on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Cadets Captain Thomas Mizer and 2nd Lieutenant Jessica Wilhelm commanded their units to first place finishes in the Armed and Unarmed Regulation categories respec-tively. Cadet 1st Lieutenant Bohdan Walker commanded the Armed Exhibition Platoon to a 2nd place finish.

Page 16: Volume 12, Number 5 From the Desk of the Principal

Page 16 January 2020

“Our cadets per-formed well, despite some cadets missing practice due to the flu bug that has been going around,” said Marine Instructor Master Sergeant Jeff Benak. Senior Marine In-structor Major Tom McGrath said that this meet was a good indication of where the Wolves need to improve. “This meet was a good barome-ter of where we stand right now. Our focus is now on the Sec-tional Meet at the Purdue University Armory in West Lafa-yette on February 22nd. We will have to be at the top of our game to win that meet against 21 oth-

er schools and earn a spot at the Marine National Championship meet in April.” Michigan City has qualified the last two years for that meet. This year it is in Daytona Beach, Florida. The trip would be fully funded by the Marine Corps. In addition to the Drill Team preparing for the Sectional Meet, the cadets will be supporting the school and community during De-cember. Among their activities will be helping with the set-up and clean-up for the One City One Sound concert, providing Color Guards for the home basketball games, and providing bell-ringers for the Salvation Army. ****************************************************

MCHS MCJROTC PARTICIPATES IN

STATE STEM COMPETITION

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Re-serve Officer Training Corps competed in the state round of Cyber Patriot, the national cyber security game that requires students to apply skills from science, technology, engineering and mathemat-ics (STEM). This was the third round of the competition. MCHS was the only Marine JROTC in Indiana to compete in Cyber Patri-ot, as well as only one of five out of the 32 JROTC programs from all services in the state to field a team. “Although we did not advance to the semi-final, our cadets com-peted well in our division,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath. “This was a great starting point for the members of our team to pursue cyber security as a career, either in or out of the military.”

Page 17: Volume 12, Number 5 From the Desk of the Principal

Page 17 January 2020

Marine Instructor Master Sergeant Jeff Benak commented on the endurance of the cadets “They are also on the drill team, which starts practice at 5:45 am. Cyber Patriot practice is after school. So these cadets are put-ting in at least 10 hours at the school on most days.”

Faculty Advisor Ralph Gee, who is also the Technology and Engineering In-structor at MCHS, had high praise for the efforts of the cadets. “For these high school students, who have had little or no exposure to cyber security, they really made great strides in un-derstanding and applying the concepts of preventing an information system from being hacked.”

Although the Cyber Patriot season is over for MCHS, the MCJROTC will have a busy second semester. The Drill Team is preparing for the Sectional Meet at Purdue University in West Lafayette on February 22nd. If they win that meet, they would qualify for the third consecutive year for the Na-tional Marine Drill Meet being held at Daytona Beach, Florida. All costs for that trip would be covered by the Ma-rine Corps. The cadets will continue to support the school and community, to include providing Color Guards for all home basketball games. The pro-gram will also be preparing for the numerous summer camps that the cadets attend, one of which may be a

Cyber Security Camp. The Marine Corps also covers the costs for all of these camps.

MCHS MCJROTC SUPPORTS SCHOOL, COMMUNITY The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Re-serve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) continued to support MCHS, Michigan City Area Schools (MCAS) and the Michigan City-LaPorte area during December. Cadets assisted in the set-up and clean-up of the One City One Sound holiday concert which featured students from all nine schools in MCAS. Cadets also participated in com-munity service events which included decorating at the Barker Mansion and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Ad-ditionally, cadets provided Color Guards for the home basketball games. “The holidays are a busy time for every-one, including our cadets,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath.

Page 18: Volume 12, Number 5 From the Desk of the Principal

Page 18 January 2020

“Yet, our cadets find time to help others. That is the true spirit of Christmas.”

Master Sergeant Jeff Benak, the Marine Instructor, also commented on the ca-det’s willingness to support school and community events. “Many of the cadets who do our community service are at the school daily at 5:45 am for Drill Team practice. They could easily use the excuse of being too tired, yet they are the first ones to volunteer to help at events.”

The Drill Team’s next meet is February 22nd at Purdue University in West Lafa-yette for the MCJROTC Sectional Cham-pionship. If the Wolves win, they would

qualify for the third consecutive year to compete at the MCJROTC National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida. Only 12 schools out of the 250 MCJROTC schools nationwide can qualify. The cost of both trips is completely funded by the Marine Corps, with no charge to either the school or the cadets. The cadets will also continue to provide Color Guards for all home basketball games.
