The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters
Vol 32, Issue 9, September 2015
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hi Ladies,
It is hot, hot, hot as I write this which makes me wish for cool-
er fall days. Maybe if we paint fall motifs, it will become fall
sooner? We have Bobbie T’s seminar elf and owl, Onya’s
Christmas tree candle holder, and Karen’s pumpkin project
coming up, so there’s a start.
Bobbie’s seminar is filling up but you can snag some of the
last seats by calling Sue pronto. Don’t miss out on this oppor-
tunity to paint with one of our local artist treasures.
Speaking of fun, our mini-seminar with Lori Hillstead was
awesome. Everyone loved the multi-media approach using
decoupage, stamping, painting, and embellishments to create
a room full of beautiful watering cans. Lori is always so low
key and encouraging that we just enjoy painting with her.
Thank you so much, Lori for a wonderful class!
There are a few chapter things that I need to bring up (before
I forget). We have our project vote ahead of us on our calen-
dar as well as nominations and voting for next years officers.
If you have an interest in volunteering for a position or any
questions about helping out with chapter, please let me
know. This year in lieu of a Christmas party we will have a
potluck meal and “open paint” for ornaments, UFO’s, or any
thing else you might want to work on. Please sign up in the
project binder, so we know how many people will be at-
tending and so we can contact you regarding what to
bring for the potluck meal.
Whew. That’s it. I think I’m going to pull out the halloween
pumpkins that I bought the other day to make my house look
like fall. After that, maybe I’ll work on my
stack of UFO’s (unfinished objects). Stay
cool ladies, and happy painting.
Your President, Charlotte

SDP Readership Survey
The SDP is conducting an online survey on the Decora-
tive Painter magazine during September. You may have
received an e-mail with a link. Information about the
survey is also on page 9 of the latest issue. It is really
important to voice our opinions about the content, quali-
ty, & frequency of this publication, as it is the last of the
print periodicals focusing on decorative painting. So,
please take time to complete this survey. Here’s the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2015dpreadershipsurvey

1st Vice (Programs) News What can I say I just loved the class with Lori Hillstead. I love the piece so much and she really is a good teach-er. We will see her again in January 2016…. I have the piece for that class with me and will bring it to the Bob-bie T seminar. So, even if you aren't coming to Bobbie's class , come and see pieces for the upcoming classes. I should also have the pre-ordered pieces for the Rogaland Christmas Tree with Onya at the September classes.
Please don't forget to sign-up for Onya's class in October. It is a wonderful piece. It is a Jo Sonja design and it would be a beautiful addition to your Christmas decorations and an heirloom piece. I am so looking forward to this class. I love doing Rosemaling of any kind.
Karen Ortman is teaching the highest voted project — Pumpkins in Mini on a 6" canvas. This class in in No-vember.
September is the Bobbie Takashima seminar. Sept 12 and 13, Sat and Sun.. It is not too late to sign up for Bobbie's class. And you really should take a class with Bobbie T as she is known throughout the world. She teaches all over the world and she is our very own PHP member. We are very lucky to have her not only as a member of ours but she doesn't have a lot of open dates for classes. We had to schedule this class over a year ago. You will get a chance to do some sculpting using quik wood on the Woodland Elf on Saturday and then value painting on either Fabric or Wood with the Night Owl on Sunday. Just let me know if you want to come … we would love to have you.
Here are the people already signed up for the class with Bobbie. Jeanne Robert, Sheila Elliot, Neva Ander-son, Cynthia Megill, Linda Silvasy, Mary Mitchell, Cheryl Powell, Marilyn Dixon, Ramona Jacobs, Mindy Rupp, Alex Doyle, Charlotte Hicks, Leslie Pilcher, Anita Lane, Carol Voyles, Pam My-ers, Renee Molloy, Kenna Perrin, Linda Howard, Donna Johnson, Elinor Tenney, Dee Bristol, Karen Krause, Karen Sheppard, Laurie Stewart.

Our own Cynthia Megill was featured in an article in the U-T San Diego
this past month. Cynthia is a volunteer who provides free housing to visit-
ing actors who perform in Moonlight Stage Productions each May through
September. Cynthia and her husband & daughters have been associated
with the Moonlight since its beginning. Cynthia herself has performed in
five of their productions. Don’t you think she should treat us to a concert
next paint-in??

Ways & Means 2015
It’s that time of year again for our annual Ways & Means Raffle Fundraiser. As a member of Palomar Heritage Painters , you are aware this is our primary fundraiser of the year; therefore members are expected to participate in purchasing tickets to ensure our organization continues to be supported. Our drawing will be during the October paint-in. In the past this drawing has been held during the Christmas party but so much was going on last year, we decided to move it. Tickets will be available in July during the Paint-In day. If someone is not there and you can deliver their tickets to them, that would be helpful. Colored pictures will not be available with the exception of members who do not receive the monthly newsletter via e-mail. Please check out the pictures below. In addition, the pieces will be displayed at all remaining Paint-Ins until the drawing. Each member will be given 20 tickets at $1 per ticket and more may be purchased. If you mail me the tickets back, please indicate how you would like me to divide them. If there aren’t any instructions, I will divide them among the 3 pieces. I will take tickets any time before the raffle. If you have questions, please feel free to call or e-mail me. Linda Silvasy 13826 Little Pond Rd. Sharing is Good............ Have you painted something you just love? Do you have a new surface or pattern packet you just bought? Please bring your
treasurers to paint-ins to share with all of us. Many of us don't see everything on line or paint with groups of gals during the
week. All of us can help spread " the word" about great painting items and where to get them. Add a note on each item with
information and where to get them and put them on the back program table.
Also:
Get your "red hot" pallet decals at the paint-ins. Only $2.00 ea.
They are just the right size to tuck into a card for a friend. Not many left !

Local Shops Marilyn Dixon has discovered a new shop ………...
Hi everyone........I just visited a shop maybe some of you haven't heard about yet. The name is The Making
Place located in Escondido in a strip mall on Felicita Rd and Escondido Blvd. (Across from the Vons center). Lots
of paper crafting items, great stencils ,embellishments & a little fabric. It is so important to help support any of the
shops we have left in San Diego. Don't forget Donna Carpenter for painting supplies. A few weeks ago I ordered
paint and picked it up at the paint-in. That was so convenient. Paint with Joy! Marilyn D.

Musings on Rosemary West Seminar
I just returned from Hesperia where I took a wonderful 2-day seminar taught by Rosemary West. We painted 2 very different
pieces. I know we all have painted Rosemary’s designs and Sandy Garcia is a wonderful teacher of them, but I picked up a few
tips from Rosemary herself that really helped me …….
Slip-Slap Backgrounds — Instead of slip-slapping by making random X’s, Rosemary paints a few (3-4) streaks in one direction
and then paints a few in the opposite direction over the first streaks. She puts down Retarder first, of course, and then softens with
a mop and goes to the next color. That was pretty revolutionary for me (who panics at mottled backgrounds). I actually liked my
background with the FIRST application.
The dry-brushing: Rosemary’s style of dry-brushing is NOT the same as drybrushing highlights by rubbing out the paint on a
paper towel and then rubbing on the surface (a source of confusion for me — I wish they wouldn’t call both techniques “dry-
brushing”). Rosemary only has two ways of loading a brush. Fully loaded — You put a LOT of paint on a DRY filbert brush
with just a SLIGHT wipeoff of the brush bottom on a paper towel. One loading (with the proper sized brush) should be able to do
a whole flower petal, starting at the lightest value edge and moving to the shadow area. Your touch should be very light. The
strokes should be long and continuous, not choppy (my bad!), releasing gradually as you get nearer the bottom of the stroke,
where the paint will drag on the rough texture and fade out. If you feel like you need to bear down to get more paint out of the
brush… STOP! and get more paint! (her exact words). The second way Rosemary loads a brush is a side load of a dirty brush
with some stroking on a waxy palette to create the final soft highlights where you don’t want hard lines. The brush is always very
dry. After rinsing, any water in the brush is squeezed out thoroughly with a paper towel.
You lightly go over big streaks to blend, but don’t worry too much about streaks or full coverage of the first coat (that was very
hard for me). Pay attention to making a crisp edge at the top of the strokes, especially in the lightest highlight, because you don’t
outline it later. Rosemary kind of slides the tip of the brush at the beginning of each stroke to create the edge before she starts to
press and pull down the stroke.
Use flow medium (and NOT water) to thin metallic paints for lining. Put Kleister Medium into the paint to make dots stand up.
Rosemary makes stripes by dry brushing over a stripe stencil.
If you want to know how Rosemary finishes or varnishes her pieces, don’t look in her books or patterns, as she doesn’t mention it
(I’ve looked). She says she HATES varnishing and many times doesn’t put anything on her finished pieces!! If she does, it is
DecoArt spray sealer (Matte) or JoSonja’s Satin Polyurethane Varnish. —— Leslie Pilcher

Driving Directions to San Marcos Mobile Estates: If you are coming from the 5, you will be traveling East on the 78 Hwy. You
will get off at the Woodland Parkway/ Barham Dr. exit. Continue till the light
and make a left hand turn, you will be on Barham Rd., continue & you will go
through 2 more lights after the second light (La Moree), make sure you are in
the right hand lane, because you will make a right hand turn into my Mobile
Home Park, drive straight ahead, till you have to either turn left or right and
make a right then an immediate left you will see the pool area. Parking is all
along the pool area, the clubhouse is up the brick stairs.
If you are coming from the Hwy 15 take the 78 Hwy West. Take the Wood-
land Pwky/Barham Dr. exit. You will be going on a cloverleaf, stay to your
right and go to the light and make a right, on Woodland Pkwy, go under the
underpass and get in the left hand turn lane to make a left on Barham
Dr. From here follow the same instructions as I wrote for coming from the

HELP!!!!!
Charlene Butler desperately needs to find a home for a starving cat that landed on her doorstep. He is all white with a
grey spot on his head and is extremely friendly and loving. Charlene has fed him, treated him for fleas and taken him
to the vet, where she found that he is fairly old and has kidney failure. But she can’t keep him. If you can take in a cat
and give it some love in its autumn years (or months), it would be greatly appreciated. Contact Charlene by e-mail.
