By Chaplain John

“We remember with Thanksgiving those who have served youhere on earth and now rest from their Labors.” November and thechanging colors of the trees brings to mind the season when weremember those who have labored with us in the years gone by andhave now passed on. As Shrine-Masons we remember those Nobleseach month at our Stated Meetings with the Black Camel report. Some denominations recognize All Saints Sunday, November 5th,as a time to remember all those who have died during the past year.Candles are lit and bells are often rung as their names are read.Special music is sung. The Jewish people have some wonderfultraditions. They remember their loved ones each Sabbath with aspecial prayer of remembrance called the Kaddish. Observant jewsrecite this prayer daily for a full year and a special candle called theYatzeit is lit on the anniversary of the day of death each month. Nomatter how we remember the passing of our loved ones, it isimportant never to forget the many contributions that they havemade to our lives. As Shrine-Masons let us remember all thoseNobles who have gone before us, those who have labored long andhard at Tripoli to make it a great Shrine. Let their warm memoriesencourage us to take our turn and do our share. “It is better to go toa house of Mourning than to go to a house of Feasting, for Death isthe destiny of every man; the Living should take this to heart.”Ecclesiastes 7:2 “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death ofhis Saints.” Psalm 116:15 Let us remember with Thanksgiving!

A Blessed Thanksgiving to you all.

Chaplain John | [email protected]

P.S. Remember to turn your clock back one hour on Saturday,November 4th. “Spring ahead and fall back.” Daylight time ends

Also we will see you at All Faith Night on Wednesday,November 15th.

A Note from the ChiefAlthough fall is here it still seems like summer in Chicago.

Over the course of September, we have continued toincorporate and support our expanded medical staff. Thanks toeveryone’s wonderful support, the process continues smoothly. We have just increased operating room time to helpaccommodate the growth. We continue to work on theimplementation of our Strategic plan and look forward tocontinued growth of our hospital. To promote local outreach, inlate September, we presented at AMITA Health on varioustopics including plastic surgery, scoliosis, spinal cord injury, physical medicine and rehabilitation, sports injuries, osteogenesis imperfecta, common fractures in children, and aworkshop on bracing and splinting. We had great attendanceby the AMITA staff and hope that this will encourage referralsand future collaboration. I would like to thank the physicianswho presented and Cynthia Anderson and the PatientDevelopment team for coordinating this event.

There were a number of notable events in September. First,we celebrated Environmental Services week. I would like tothank the wonderful environmental service staff for providinga clean, safe, and comfortable healthcare environment for ourpatients, families, and staff. They are here 7 days a week andvery responsive to our hospital’s needs. We also celebratedNational Surgical Technologists Week. I would like to thankour outstanding Surgical Technologists who play a critical rolein the OR to help us perform successful surgeries in a safe andefficient manner. Finally, we celebrated NationalRehabilitation Awareness Foundation (NRAF) week, with thegoal of educating people about rehabilitation. I would like tothank our enthusiastic and terrific Rehab department for theircommitment to improving the lives of our patients by helpingthem to become stronger and more independent. During thisweek, they hosted a challenge to encourage and inspire ourstaff to become healthier by exercising on a regular basis.

It is hard to believe, Dr. Larry Vogel has retired after 38years of service at our hospital. He began his career at Shrinersin 1979 and developed the Spinal Cord Injury Program in

1983. Dr. Vogel’s motto is, “Provide the world’s best pediatricspinal cord injury care, education and research through cutting-edge treatments, compassion, and humor.” He has had adistinguished career with many notable academicachievements, honors, and nationally recognized prestigiouspositions. His retirement party at The Carleton was bitter sweetfor all of us. Many board members and staff honored him forbeing an amazing physician, friend, Shriner, researcher andmentor. His service as the Professor and Chief of Pediatrics atShriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago is unprecedented,as he provided state of the art care to our patients in pediatrics, infectious disease and spinal cord injury. We thank him for hisamazing work and contribution to our hospital!

Employee Recognition: Lastly, I would like to give a special thanks to Byrdell

Blakely who works in Environmental services. Byrdell alwaysgoes out of his way to greet and help you with whatever youneed. He is cheerful, hard working, and committed to doing agreat job and compassionate about our patients and theirfamilies. He makes Shriners a brighter place for everyone.Byrdell, please enjoy the parking space adjacent to theemployee entrance to recognize your commitment anddedication. Congratulations Byrdell!
