We recently added fall color to our storefront. We installed new awnings in a pumpkin color with blue trim. Over the years, we have had pink, blue and yellow awnings. Change is good. With old buildings, life is a series of interactions with various craftspeople who know how to fix and maintain them.

AwningsWhen I moved into this building, built in 1875, it had all sorts of awful “modern” im-provements from the 1950s, like aluminum awnings, acoustical dropped ceilings and painted limestone. It became my mission to uncover the simple beauty in the plain ver-nacular style of this former late 19th century

grocery store. I have tried to keep my improve-ments within the character of the original building with some necessary accommoda-tions for electricity and plumbing.

In the beginning, I did all the remodeling work myself. It was fun to do. Most guys think there is something manly about sawing wood and hammering nails. I was on a bud-get. As I could afford to hire real craftspeople to do the work, I did. I readily recognized the difference in quality. I have a great apprecia-tion for those with the skill. Like anything, it takes training, practice and most importantly the patience for detail. I have gotten to know my share of carpenters, stonemasons, tile makers, stained glass artists, blacksmiths and painters and I have great respect for their skills. I love competence when I find it. It makes me want to do other projects to take advantage of their skills.

Stapled Clog CollectionWhen Dansko decided to re-design and manufacture their own version of the stapled clog, they wanted to make three key im-provements. They flared the heel out a bit for a more stable walk, they created a bit of a heel cup to cradle your foot better, and finally, they created a roomier and more consistent fit. Great look! petence was too glaring for it to remain; however, one of my first repairs does re-main. I poured a concrete floor in the base-ment. The ceiling height was about 5 feet. The first floor is held in place with a series of hedge tree stumps set on concrete piers with a dirt floor. It was nasty work to be hunched over pouring bags of concrete into the portable mixer in a haze of con-crete dust.

Just as I was about to finish, I stepped into the wet concrete and plunged my feet deep into the concrete. I was wear-ing my first pair of Birkenstock sandals, a pair of brown suede Zurich sandals. When I pulled my feet out barefooted, I thought it was a good idea to leave my first pair of Birkenstocks encased in concrete as sort of a time capsule. Thousands of Birkenstocks have passed through this building over the years but my first pair will remain in place.

pentry shop shares space in our warehouse. We were talking in his shop one afternoon and I asked if he knew anyone who made awnings. The two people who made aw-nings for me years ago are no longer in busi-ness. Most craftspeople get their business by word-of-mouth from one satisfied customer to a potential satisfied customer. We asked around and there were no recommenda-tions. A nearby town had an awning shop, but they didn’t make their own, they merely would come out and measure, give a quote and send the specs off to some distant aw-ning factory and install it later. Not only did I not like their price, I didn’t like the distance between the customer and the worker. I wanted to know who did the work.

We decided that we could make the aw-nings ourselves. We had adequate space in our warehouse. Most importantly we cared enough to do a good job. So we purchased the canvas and a heavy duty sewing ma-chine and started sewing. We did the smaller

second-story awnings first. The learning curve was steep, but after eight awnings we seemed to get the hang of it. We then need-ed graphics on the awnings. I didn’t want a laser-cut, vinyl, iron-on logo. We thought in keeping with the age of the building the graphics should be painted. So our catalog designer created images which we could project onto the awning and Missy our cata-log illustrator painted them on the awning.

I loved the whole process of being able to turn to people you know and trust and people you are happy to give your money to rather than some distant corporate entity. We then pondered, wouldn’t it be great if we could create a series of relationships be-tween craftspeople and people who need craftspeople and an environment where they could comfortably meet?

While studying in Brazil, yoga enthusiast Anne Kalso noticed Bra-zilians with per-

Our thought was something like a coopera-tive, where a group of craftspeople coopera-tively, in various ways, display their skills and talents to those who would need their servic-es in a space which is both gallery space and studio or workshop space along with a web-site providing portfolios of the craftspeople. Most craftspeople are good at their craft but not necessarily at marketing. In a very human way the purpose of the cooperative would al-low people to get to know the each other.The question is, without one person in charge can a group effectively combine their skills and talents to help each other and provide an en-joyable space for customers to discover them?

If you haven’t worn our brands before and don’t know your size, we want you to be able to order with confidence. Our Two-Month Test Walk allows you to wear your new shoes or sandals–gradually break them in, confirm that your purchase will work for you–send them back if they do not. Two months should be an adequate amount of time to make that decision.

Exchanges—Yes, you may return something for an exchange, new or used, within two months of the shipping date of your purchase. You are responsible for the shipping cost of returning your purchase to us. However, we will cover the shipping cost to get your first and even a second exchange to you. If a series of exchanges takes place, all must be completed within five months of the original purchase ship date.

Returns—Yes, you may return something, new or used, for a refund within two months of the shipping date of your purchase. Yes, you may return an exchange for a refund if it is within two months of the exchange ship date but not longer than five months past the original purchase ship date. Shipping charges are not refunded. Please return in original shoebox and packing material.

Exceptions—Yes, you may special order items which we do not stock or feature in our catalog. However, if returned, they need to be returned in new condition within two months. Our test walk does not apply to our in-store customers who have ample opportunity to spend time trying on various styles and sizes to make a more informed choice. For the few who send back an inordinate number of shoes, we reserve the option of disallowing future test walks.

Shoes and sandals which are modified or damaged cannot be re-turned–i.e., taps or lifts added, splattered with paint, dyed, or chewed by a dog. Common sense should let you know if a pair is damaged. Handbags, socks and other non-footwear items are not returnable in used condition.
