How did Kan Eang @pier Restaurant start? The restaurant found its beginnings as a grocery store opened by Mr. Chamnan Pachantabutr, affectionately known as Khun Daeng, approximately 40 years ago. He was and still is close to the local fishermen who are based at Chalong Pier. During those early days they began to have regular friendly gatherings near his store, grilling the fish they caught and cooking other original recipes. Once sold commercially, these

unique dishes quickly grew in popularity and are still mainstays on the restaurant’s menu today.

In 2007, major renovations were initiated to meet increasing demand as well as prepare for the next generation within the Pachantabutr family. Prior to this, the restaurant was officially known as Kan Eang, but the name was altered to favor the modern and stylish look you see there today.

What was the incentive behind opening the VSET Restaurant?Feeling that they were ready to expand into other areas of the restaurant market, the Pachantabutrs decided their first step would be to open a small but intimate venue serving the best western cuisine Phuket has to offer. To help them achieve this, they were joined by Chef Ronnie Macuja, a culinary expert Khun Wallee has known for over ten years. Together they conceived VSET, a beautiful restaurant found attached to Kan Eang @pier.

How did you start Patak Villa? It is common knownledge that real estate is one of Phuket’s most prosperous business sectors, and having an established history and local contacts is very useful. With this in mind, the family started small and elected to build in the Chalong area, which is growing as a Phuket hotspot. Since 2003, Patak Vil la has grown into a three phase housing complex with over 300 units in total, serving both residential and commercial purposes. Their highest priorities have always been to offer a great location alongside value in each product.

What roles do Mon, May, Mann & Best, who are the next generation within the family, have in the businesses?Mon manages the daily operations of Patak Villa. His parents have allowed him to tackle problems and new tasks on his own as it is the best way to learn. However, when he seeks advice, they do not hesitate in assisting him and passing on their own experience. With his youthful approach, Mon has done a remarkable job, introducing new housing designs for the Premium Patak Villa Townhomes that have been accepted and appreciated by new residents.

May has been involved in accounting for both Kan Eang @pier and Patak Villa for some time. Her husband, Best, is the newest addition to the family and also plays an integral role in the management of the restaurants’

Mann has his sights set firmly on taking Kan Eang @pier into the future. He is currently in his third and final year of studying International Restaurant Management in Australia. There is no doubt he enjoys the dining industry very much and upon his return he will explore every aspect of the business with the aim of eventually guiding one of Phuket’s most loved dining establishments to new heights.

Could you please introduce yourself?Hi, I’m Larry Cunningham, the owner, developer and GM of The Chava Resort, Surin Beach, Phuket. I am also the Australian Honorary Consul for Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi and owner of Phuket One Real Estate. I have lived in Phuket for nine years.

The resort opened during a bad economic time, how did you manage to get through this time?Yes we opened at the time of the airport blockade in Bangkok and at this time we had a lot of bookings for Japanese and Korean guests. Unfortunately, these people don’t like anything in the slightest bit risky so everybody cancelled their trips. This was not a great start for the opening. Since then we have had other political issues which have kept people away from Thailand. This has made it very difficult for us. Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do about any of these problems. You will get extremely stressed if you sit and try to sort out what you can do about it. So you just have to be strong minded and say to yourself, there really is nothing you can do. So what you try to do is look at your strengths. Luckily one of our strengths is repeat business. We actually have people coming

back this year and it will be their sixth time staying here. When you think that we have only been open for two and a half years and we have people coming back for their sixth time that is pretty good!

How successful has the resort been since opening? We have been very successful really. We’ve had a lot of VIP’s, movie stars and Australian media. Miss Universe has been here. We receive a lot of free publicity from these people and it is all free advertising. We are also lucky with our resort location and with our staff. We have 80% of the staff still here from when we opened. It’s good for them here. We are relaxed and not too serious all the time.

In what way does your resort differ from those in the Surin beach area?I think the main difference we have is that we are not very big, we are a boutique resort. We also offer apartments which the other resorts don’t have. We are very popular with families. Our typical guests are mum, dad and the two kids. This is because they can all stay within one of our self contained apartments. If they were to stay in a hotel, they would usually have to rent two rooms. Here they are in two rooms but behind one door. It’s a lot safer for them.

What facilities do you have to offer here at The Chava? Our smallest rooms are 2 bed apartments. During the low season we do offer these as one bedrooms and just close off one of the bedrooms. We also have 3 & 4 bedrooms apartments and 4 bedroom penthouses. The smallest apartments are 160sqm and the penthouses are 350sqm. Some of the apartments have actually been sold and you can still buy them if you want to. We have a range of facilities here. The focal point of the resort is probably our lovely pool. We are so lucky with our location; this is probably the key to our success. We are within walking distance of the best beach on the island. I would class the beach as an Australian beach, it’s very deep, and it has nice clear water and fine sand. There are no rocks here like at the other beaches. It is also very clean. I would say that it has become the most high society beach in Phuket. We offer massage here both by the pool and in room and we have a great restaurant. We have a tour desk and laundry service. So really we have full facilities to offer our guests.

PeopleFocus

www.phuketindex.com 21

Page 26: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.11

What is your return rate for your guests and what do you think makes them return? This peak season we are probably looking at a 70% return rate. We have been very fortunate because from very early on people have been writing reviews on Tripadvisor.com and are giving us a 4½ or 5 star rating. This was always one of the things that we were hoping for when we opened the resort. We are not a big resort and our maximum occupancy is only 140 guests. A lot of the guests come the same time each year so they get to know one another and we also like to get to know the guests more personally, so this really helps.

Is there anything you feel you would like to change or improve about the resort? There are always things you want to improve or change. It’s more to do with whether you can actually do it or not. I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t put a Spa in here. But then there are many other nice spas nearby for guests to go to. There’s not really anything I would change.

Many resorts promote their restaurants to non resident guests, do you follow this example?Yes we are finding now that our restaurant is developing a great reputation for its burgers.

Especially for The Chava burger! We are having a lot more people come back for that. Recently we had a lawyer who brought his father to us to try the Chava burger because he had heard so much about it. We have a guest who owns 20 restaurants in Hong Kong and the first thing he does when he comes to Phuket is have his Chava burger. So yes we are getting a lot more people coming from outside particularly in the peak season.

What is your goal for The Chava Resort in 2011? Our goal is to maintain the business that we have and keep the repeat business coming back. Also we still want the free exposure from our VIP guests, both Thai and International. We are happy with the way things are going. All we can hope is that there are no more political problems, because this can have such a great impact on us. The only problem we envisage is the strength of the Thai baht. We really need it to be weaker. We have seen a big change in where the visitors are coming from. The Australian dollar is so strong compared to European currencies, so we are seeing a lot more visitors from Australia. But anyone that reads this, please come and have a look around and see what we have to offer here. Maybe even come and try a Chava Burger!

Chef Lumineau earned a distinction as Maitre Cuisinier de France, an elite group of the most famous chefs in the world with about 300 members worldwide, more than 14 years ago. The role of Maitre Cuisinier de France is to maintain and promote the quality and prestige of French cuisine with the added goal of training and nurturing young culinary professionals. He is the only chef with this title in Thailand.

Asked about his thought on French Cuisine Chef Lumineau says “French cuisine is very important for me; it is very much about the produce and the taste of the produce. If I cook fish, I want it to have a fish taste. It is served in a very simple way with a little sauce and some vegetables. There are very little ingredients which go into French food.”

GINJA COOK DAY PROGRAM BY SASITHORNRAT

Sasithornrat

I t was an early start for all enthused chefs on Thursday 6th January 2011 and I had to whip into gear to make sure I arrived at JW Marriott, Resort and Spa Phuket,

by 8 am to meet my fellow students for the Thai cooking course at Ginja Cook. The course starts early because the introduction is a trip to the local Khokkloy market. Here the instructor gave tips and tricks in the use of Thai fruits and vegetables and explained in great detail about the use of the multicoloured spices!

Once back at JW Marriott we were taken to the Ginja cook building. This building was designed by the award-winning Bensley Design Studios in Bangkok. It celebrates southern architecture and is built in the style of a typical Thai Sala using

and serve our concoctions. Lunch is provided for you in the form of your own three dishes along with a good drinks selection. I am happy to say I came away with no food poisoning or sickness and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

At the end of the course everyone is presented with a Thai cookbook with local herbs and spices, a Ginja Cook Souvenir apron and Ginja Cook Master Certificate.

teakwood as its main material. Floor to ceiling glass sliding doors provide natural light and showcase stunning views of the resort’s fragrant gardens and the Andaman Sea. The instructor began by discussing the three dishes we were about to attempt to make. Luckily for me, prior to us being thrown into the fire, the instructor presented a cookery demonstration of the dishes that we would have to prepare! To make life even easier, each student also received a leaflet for each individual recipes of the day.

The task ahead of me was to prepare and cook the following three dishes.

1. Gai Yang Krueng Gaeng (Grilled chicken with curry sauce)2. Pla Nueng Manao (Steamed seabass with spicy lime sauce)3. Goong Som (Poached prawn in coconut, shallots, chilli and lime broth)

So it was time to make our way to our allocated cooking stations. There are four cooking stations; each is for two students and a spacious station for the instructing Chef. Each station has dramatically designed overhead exhaust fans adding to the overall ambiance of the Sala.

Traditional cooking utensils from made of brass and wood were there ready for meal preparations. So weapons were at the ready, ingredients were at the ready and for the next two and a half hours there was plenty of chopping, grinding, roasting, and pounding, mixing, boiling and tasting to be done. When our time was nearly up, it was time to garnish

improve the ‘real you’. Surgery cannot make you into somebody you are not. Professional performers may seek cosmetic surgery to make them look like a famous person who they are intending to imitate on a stage. However, the performer understands that he or she is not the person they will imitate.

Makeover programmes may encourage you to investigate the value of hair restoration. You can also be encouraged by the success of hair restoration in a friend or relative to seek hair restoration for your self. Your best approach to achieving successful hair restoration is to make certain that the procedure is individualised to your characteristics. What worked well for your friend or relative may not work well for you. You and the physician hair restoration specialist must work together to achieve the outcome which best suits your needs.

M ore and more reality TV programmes are using cosmetics surgery as their theme. A typical storyline is to present a person whose real or self perceived cosmetic

imperfections are corrected using cosmetic surgery.

‘Makeover’ programmes, as these have now become known, have a positive effect when they reinforce the idea that no one has to l ive with cosmetic imperfections that surgical or medical treatment can correct. Hair loss, as an example, is one of the easiest imperfections to correct by using either surgical or medical hair restoration. Correction of hair loss has high public acceptance, it is not regarded as a ‘vanity’ procedure but rather as a procedure that improves self -confidence as well as the way in which is perceived by others.

T he first step towards healthier food choices is understanding the ingredients, reading the ingredients labels, and making informed decisions by identifying the toxins and

unhealthy substances.

As a general rule processed foods should be avoided as much as possible. Thailand is abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables. Even if you are lazy you can go out and find a fruit seller who will actually peel and cut a whole mango, watermelon, pineapple or papaya for you!

Sadly it is often more temping to go into one of the many convenience stores and buy something in a pre-packed plastic wrap. If it comes in a sealed plastic bag more often then not, it is processed and with no nutritional value.

So what are some seemingly harmless ingredients that can pose health hazards and make us fat too?

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP (HFCS) this is derived from corn and is one of the main ingredients in many processed foods. Next time you are shopping just pick up a bottle of ketchup, sweet cakes, pie, frozen dinner, soda, juices etc. HFCS is naturally sweet and helps maintain the self life of food for long periods. It is also known to be responsible in contributing to significant weight gain. MSG - MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE Monosodium Glutamate is a flavour enhancer cleverly hidden in many foods. It can be called natural or artificial flavouring instead of being listed as MSG. Without thinking about it we just accept an “artificial” flavour in our food, but now

we know better to question it when we see it. If it is something savoury then the chances are it means MSG. And what is wrong with MSG? It is a neurotoxin, a nerve poison that assaults your nerve synapses and attacks the brain cells. A few side effects are headaches, rashes, bloating, feeling dizzy or thirsty, insomnia, numbness and many more.

HYDROGENATED OIL There are some oils that are good for us, and it is now being discovered that eating fat does not necessarily make you fat. Organic oils such as those found in flaxseed, sunflower and sesame have necessary Omega-3 and Omega 6 oils. But these are natural cold-pressed oils.

WHITE FLOURWhite flour is the main ingredients in many foods we love, breads, pastas, pastries and a staple of many diets.

Flour is derived from wheat and wheat is not white, so to get it white it must be bleached by chemicals which stay in the bread. Also because of the removal of the bran (the outside layer) and the embryo there is no fibre and no nutritional value in the flour. Companies will then enrich the bread, adding nutrients after but this is not a natural way to get vitamins and minerals. Enriched white bread is terribly unnatural. Also some breads marked “whole grain” have added molasses or other colouring agent to bread to give it a darker brown colour so it appears more healthy.

T he clearer and more meaningful your purpose the greater will be your direction and feelings of inspiration for life. People who are inspired and committed to fulfilling

their dreams grow, while those who do not, tend to decay mentally, emotionally, and physically. In other words, if you’re not fulfilling your life’s mission and doing what you love and loving what you do, then you are not really planning to live an inspired life. You are simply living a quiet life of desperation. The first step towards discovering your purpose is making the decision of what you would love to be, do and have in all areas of your life. If you knew you couldn’t fail, listened to your heart and soul, and wrote down what you would love to

DESIGNING THE LIFE YOU WOULD LOVE!

be, do and have in all areas of your life, what would they be? Take the time to write it all down. A short pencil is greater than a long memory. Any detail you leave out is a detail that others may determine. Assume you are the captain of your ship and the master architect of your destiny.

Everything we do is another piece to the puzzle of life!No matter what we decide to be, do and have in our lives, if it comes from a place of inspiration, it does in some way make a difference. Whether it is in business, the arts, at home or a spiritual quest, everything we do is another piece to the puzzle of life and if there are any pieces missing we do not have the whole picture. The second step is the questions we ask ourselves on a daily basis. To live an inspired rather than a despired life there are skills to be mastered, and one such skill is the ability to ask yourself inspiring, quality questions. The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you

ask, so don’t say to yourself, I’d like to do that, but do I have enough money? Because this creates a mindset that assumes you can’t. Ask yourself, “How can I do what I love and be magnificently paid for it?” Don’t stop looking until you find the answer, and get an entirely different outcome. Just reframing the statements you make to yourself offers tremendous power. This allows your vacation to become your vocation.

Be grateful for everything in life! Finally the third step is being grateful for everything in life. Those who count their blessings, who are grateful, have more blessings and fulfilment in life than those who do not. This is a simple principle. Yet it has the power to change your life. Gratitude is the key to growth and fulfilment.

Imagine if you dedicated your life to your dream and let nothing stop you, and I mean nothing. If you let no person on the planet, any challenge, obstacles, fears or emotions stop you from being exactly what you dream about, how could it not come true? There’s nothing more inspiring in my life than to speak to people who are willing and receptive to discovering their magnificent potential. The pain of regret far outweighs the pain of discipline, so don’t spend your l i fe on l itt le dreams when you have something magnificent inside that is just waiting for expression. Start today to create your master plan for 2011 and beyond so you can live a purposeful and inspired life.

Tips

Using a computer keyboard or mouse for long periods of time often causes wrist pain, which is often referred to as repetitive strain injury (RSI). This is due to the nerves of the wrist being pressed together. This can also cause pain to the fi ngertips. If symptoms are severe hand muscles can often be weakened.

You do not have to wait for a cure for symptoms of this illness, as you can simply apply ginger water to the af-fected areas. Ginger water will help relieve symptoms of RSI due to ginger having a warming herbal effect; it stimulates blood circulation around the nerves, helping to relieve the pain.

How to prepare:

Add grated ginger to boiling water and simmer for 30 min-utes, remove from the heat and set aside. Allow the water to cool but not to get cold.

the mixture to the underarm area. Once you have applied to both armpits, allow for the mask to dry, using a fan may make this quicker for you. Then rinse off the mask using warm water. Try to do this about 3 times a week, for 3 consecutive months. Due to pineapple containing natural AHA, Plai powder helping skin irritation, Borneol reducing body odour and egg white helping strengthen the skin, the dark traces in the underarm area will slowly be reduced and will leave the skin smoother.

Some skincare products may cause irritation and splitting of the skin, when used underarm, if the skin has blackened. Also if the area has been shaved or plucked violently. Some people turn to laser technology, for permanent hair removal, or pay for expensive creams to assist with underarm whitening, to eliminate this problem. However, the original problem soon reappears. We have an option that will not only save you time but also money.

All you need is the following ingredients:2 tablespoons crushed pineapple1 tablespoon Plai powder1 teaspoon Borneol1 egg white

How to do:1. Mix and stir all the ingredients together.2. Clean thoroughly under the arm and wipe dry.3. Using cotton or soft tissue, apply

the mixture to the underarm area. Once

How to use: Soak a small towel in the ginger water. Twist the towel to remove some of the water and place on the affected area. Place a dry towel over the wet towel to keep in the warmth. Leave until the towel is cold. Do this 2-3 times a day and the pain will be reduced.

TIPS FOR PERFORMING A GOOD FOOT MASSAGE WHY TO TREAT YOUR PARTNER TO SOME RELAX TIME

Health& BeautyTips

Foot massage raises levels of oxytocin, the hormone that makes you feel warm and dizzy (oxytocin is the hormone a mother’s brain generates when she’s breastfeeding).

It causes arousal; due to the fact the foot contains its own of sexual nerves.

It raises levels of lymphatic drainage. Massage helps release waste material from your system.

HOW TO DO IT:

1. PREPARATION. Make your partner comfortable; soak his or her feet in warm water and clean with a warm fl annel.

2. USE GOOD MASSAGE OIL, Perhaps one scented with lavender, as this is often seen as an aphrodisiac by both men and women.

3. MAKE SURE YOU MASSAGE THE WHOLE FOOT. Different areas of the foot refl ect on different parts of the body. The big toe refl ects the top of the head, and the sensitive area at the base of the toes

represents the neck. The inner sole of the foot refl ects the belly, while the outer sole refl ects the spine. If one specifi c area is giving your partner a problem, spend some time there to help ease the problem

4. WORK FROM THE TOES UPWARDS. A lot of tension is held in the ankles, so move the foot around to help relax the ankle joint. Start with the heel and push up toward the leg; pull the heel down and work it side to side. Use slow, deep pressure, and work the whole foot, including between the toes. Pull each toe for 10 seconds. Rub the calves from the ankle toward the knee. Since the calves and feet are furthest from the heart and fighting gravity, it is challenging for them to move lymphatic waste along.

Now let your partner try on you.

ARTHRITIS & CHINESE MEDICINE

ABOUT ARTHRITISArthritis refers to the inflammation of the joints. It is an illness a sufferer may have to deal with for the rest of his or her life. The usual soft padding between the joints slowly deteriorates, allowing the bones to rub together causing sharp, persistent pain.

There are two basic forms of arthritis that occur frequently: rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is characterised by autoimmune attacks that usually come and go, and may be influenced by numerous factors that alter the immune functions, including dietary components, infections and stress.

Osteoarthritis also involves some autoimmune responses, but is characterized by a gradual loss of tissue in the

joints as a person gets older. Inflammation of the joints with constant pain is an ongoing condition.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINEArthritis has been a recognised medical condition since ancient times. The Chinese believe the cause is due to poor chi and blood circulation that leads to symptoms of pain, numbness, swelling and stiffness.

Therefore they developed treatments to nourish and improve the circulation: Acupuncture, Herbal Formulas, and Tai Chi. CHINESE HERBAL FORMULASThe ability of the Chinese medical community to document herbal formula treatments has allowed

the medical community to gather 31 different formulas.

The formulas reveal eight commonly used herbs: Cinnamon, Liquorice, Dong Quai, Peony, Siler, Chiang-Huo, Atractylodes, and Cnidium.

These herbs improve chi and blood circulation, as well as tonify the l iver, kidneys and spleen. In general, they are warming, a bit spicy yet gentle in nature, without any toxic side-effects. From various Chinese studies, providing the formulas are suited to the individual, pain relief and possible remission in the case of rheumatoid arthritis may occur from one month to several months after treatment begins.

HOW TAI CHI HELPS ARTHRITISTai Chi has been practiced as a Chinese health-promoting martial art that focuses on slow, gentle movement, providing a smooth, continuous and low intensity exercise.

The movements of Tai Chi keep the body alert yet balanced and soft, and allow a freer range of motion in the joints and greater flexibility. The deep, rhythmic Chi Gung breathing exercises expand the lungs; lower the blood pressure and heart rate, thereby improving the body’s immune system. The focused attention to long, slow breathing and smooth, gentle movements gradually decreases emotional anxiety while lowering hypertension. All these factors improve the chi and blood flow throughout the body thereby reducing the arthrit ic inflammation and pain.

With a smoothly flowing energy system, reduced emotional stress levels and calm, steady mind, the door is open to achieve new levels of arthritic pain management.

“I WAS LED TO PHUKET IN A DREAM”

Esmeralda, the Dream Gallery RawaiOriginally from Spain, 42 year old Esmeralda is the proprietor of The Dream Gallery. The Dream Gallery, which opened in September, already houses a vast collection of Chinese antiques and artefacts. There are pieces of hand embroidered dress material, hand painted porcelain, traditional Chinese tea sets, framed antique advertising posters; hand carved wooden furniture and ornate Chinese wooden lanterns. Most of the artefacts were

hand made for wealthy families, with some pieces dating back hundreds of years. However, also on display are items of jewellery which are designed by Esmeralda and hand made by her team based in Beijing China.

Esmeralda’s fascination with Chinese artifacts began about 14 years ago when she moved to Beijing. In 1996 she was in charge of establishing foreign companies within China. She worked for many years as high advisor for the Chinese market and helped foreign companies to enter the market. In 2003 she set up her own company. She then started to be involved in exporting goods from China to various places worldwide. It was during this time in China she collected her vast range of

furniture, paintings, pottery and various ornamental pieces. Nowadays she sti l l works advising foreign companies in China but she is spending more time in the design field.

“He showed me a footprint in a rock”The story of how Esmeralda came to be in Phuket is a very interesting one. She advises us she was led by Buddha to Phuket. “I saw Buddha in a dream back in January 2007. He was dressed in gold and told me I would soon be moving to a new country” she said. “He showed me a footprint in a rock, this rock was underwater. He also showed me an island.”

“I had visited Thailand for holidays previously but never Phuket. However, in May 2007 I booked to come here. When I arrived at my hotel, I was unpacking and a map of Phuket fell out. Strangely, Phuket was the shape of the island from my dream. During my holiday here I asked various people if they knew anything about this mysterious underwater footprint, but nobody could help me. Then close to the end of my holiday, when out, I ran into an old lady. I asked her if she knew of the footprint in the rock.”

“I told her about my dream”“She was shocked and wanted to know how I knew about this because it was located in a small island and only devout Thai Buddhists knew about it. When I told her about my dream, she was happy to show me how to get to this island.”

Esmeralda paid a local fisherman to take her to this island. It is located about 30 minutes away from Cape Promthep.

“The island is inhabited by a group of monks and the head monk took me to the sacred rock. He advised me that Buddha had come to the island 2500 years ago and left his footprint there.”

It seemed natural that Esmeralda should bring her collection here to Phuket and open her Chinese antique shop. Because all of this came to her in an incredible dream, she decided to name the business The Dream. One aim of Esmeralda’s, and The Dream Galleries, is to help the Temple in Kho Kaew Pisadarn Island (Buddha Island) to finish building their pagoda. The pagoda was destroyed by a strong storm just before the Tsunami and the monk that takes care of the island is trying to rebuild it. So she hopes, with the gallery’s help, to finish this project.

Since last year, the island has become very popular with tourists and is now becoming known as Buddha Island. It can be seen from Rawai beach and there are many boats that can take you there.

Esmeralda plans to return to China every 6 weeks or so to purchase new stock for her new business. We wish her every success with her new venture.

The Dream Gallery, Viset Road, Rawai (opposite Vijit Resort) is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10a.m to 7.30p.m.

Whether used as a sofa in the lounge or an extra bed in the den or bedroom, the

unusual design of this sofa bed makes it a striking piece of furniture.

Made from banana leaf but getting its inner strength from a stainless steel frame, it provides comfort

for either function. Popping in for coffee, or unexpectedly staying overnight, your guests will appreciate your taste.

SOFA BED

The lamp bears the classic look of an old wooden tripod for a turn-of-the-century camera crafted in solid wood and accentuated with solid cast aluminum. This well appointed floor lamp features a machine-turned gear mechanism, a telescopic tripod base with adjust-ment so that it can stand on a table or the floor. Comes with a black lamp shade.

WOODEN TRIPOD LAMP

Elegant and stylish this creation is purely artistic. What used to be called a ‘conversation piece’ perhaps, but with a great deal more sophistication. Viewed by day it is a natural element to your home, and spot lit by night, a pleasing form of subdued lighting.

DECORATIVEBRANCH

These small stools are available in a natural finish, and are perfect for living room or garden decor. Hand-carved from sustainably harvested solid wood, the bench has a smooth surface and is well finished for easy cleaning. These versatile accent pieces can be side tables or extra seating.

Again, for the den perhaps, or if used as a functional but somewhat decadent sofa in the lounge, this piece is perfect to give a good night’s sleep to those guests who call in unexpectedly and maybe have a little too much to drink to drive home. Can be split into two separate beds.

DAY BED

Intriguingly out of the ordinary, these wire chairs are eye-catching and definitely different. Nevertheless they are extremely strong, surprisingly comfortable, light and cool without cushions.

What a meaningful piece manifesting a woman face down on her knees. The contemporary design is in beautiful bronze tones, this sophisticated figure would make a stunning feature in a modern home, yet is sure to add something to any space.

Guide

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FENG SHUI FOR THE BEDROOMA re you sleeping badly? Follow one or more

of the Feng Shui bedroom tips below, and get your beauty sleep back, or at least your zenaptitude. Learning how to Feng Shui your

bedroom is not all that hard, if you follow the tips:

1 Feng Shui Bed PlacementAccording to Feng Shui in the bedroom, bed placement is important. The bed should be as far away from the door as possible. The foot of the bed should not be facing the entry way (this is called the dead man’s position), and it is preferable to have the head of the bed against a wall.

2 No Electric WiresIn a Feng Shui bedroom, there should be no electric wires running through the room, or piling up in a corner. A bedroom is a place to rest not an office. Remove TV’s, computers and video games to another room.

3 Colours Are ImportantColour plays a crucial role in a Feng Shui environment; choose cool colors for bedroom walls, like blue, mauve, white or gray. Warm up the cool wall colors with bedding and curtains in soft warm colors

4 Pleasant Aromas Are NiceUse a candle to perfume the room. Santal is particularly

effective, it purifies and protects from bad vibes. A few drops of essential oils on a pillow (such as lavender) will help you relax and sleep better.

5 Use Lights to Your AdvantageLook how the room lighting is affecting your feelings about the room. Feng Shui for bedroom lighting needs to be soft and diffused. Avoid suspended lights above the bed, choose a bedside light. Remove mirrors as they do not really belong in a bedroom.

6 Round Smooth StonesUse a few smooth stones in a plate or a bowl on a nightstand. It is said to promote good sleep.

7 Keep Things in Their PlaceDisorder is not Feng Shui! As your mother kept telling you, “Tidy your room”, i t wil l help your chi circulate. What can I say Mother knows best!

DO’S AND DON’TS OF BEDROOM DECORATING

Consider function when decorating any room of your home, particularly the bedroom. The function is, of course, to provide a relaxing, comfortable environment for sleep.

Allow yourself to watch television in the bedroom, although sleep experts say you should not have a television set in the bedroom, reality says otherwise.

Turn your bedroom into a multi-functional room. Sleep and comfort reign supreme in the bedroom, keep desks and work areas out of the room.

Allow your television to become the focal point of your bedroom. Make it as unobtrusive as possible or have an armoire or cabinet to hide it away.

Keep your mattress and bedsprings for longer than 15 years – they wear out. If you notice your back is sore in the mornings and you’re more tired than usual, consider your bed comfort before scheduling the MRI.

Rely on one overhead light for all your lighting needs.

Put the side of your bed against the wall or on a diagonal in the corner.

Let trends dictate the style of your bedroom.

Home & DécorBedroom

Guide

DoDon’t

Invest in a quality, comfortable bed. You’re spending at least ¼ of your day there, it’s worth it.

Have all types of lighting in the bedroom – ambient, task, and accent and decorative.

Arrange furniture for you to easily enter and exit the bedroom without twists and turns – it’s bad Feng Shui decorating and it means furniture is not properly arranged.

Let your personal style and taste shine through when decorating your bedroom.

L ux’s Manor has launched ‘The Sixth Phuket’ project, the first ‘Lifestyle Shophouse’ in Patong Beach. It will have a distinctive architectural design, with the Sino-Portuguese

style of old Phuket. There are now spaces for rent, suitable for various businesses.

Mrs. Sarawee Bodharojtham – General Manager of Lux’s Manor, the developer of ‘The Sixth Phuket’, said the company recognizes the importance and potential for marketing in today’s consumer-focused climate. ‘The Sixth Phuket’ will be located on 1 Rai of land located on the corner of Soi Bangla, Patong Beach, Kathu, Phuket. The new three-storey shopping arcade occupies 3,150 square metres of utility space, of which 2,350 square metres will be set for rental and 800 square metres as shared space. 42 rental shop units are also available. The Sixth Phuket will open in November 2011.

‘The Sixth Phuket’ has arisen under the concept ‘Lifestyle Shophouse’. The meaning of the phrase is a place that houses various types of shops within the same area. The project will have spaces to rent on all 3 floors. The areas can be adjusted, as required, to the size of the shop that wishes to rent. The businesses which will suit ‘The Sixth Phuket’ include restaurants, financial services, health and beauty shops and service centers. The rental fee for vendors will depend on the size and position and will start at 40,000 baht to 150,000 baht.

The main highlight of ‘The Sixth Phuket’ is the unique design in Sino-Portuguese style. The project has the intention to merge the local cultural identity and trade location. This will become a key selling point to attract tourists, both Thai and foreign and become a source of shopping that anyone can visit. The current business is not just about selling a product or service, but also the sales experience for customers. Therefore, location is very important when opening shops or businesses.

Mrs. Sarawee said: “We are ready with a public relations and marketing plan to attract customers. It is a great chance for entrepreneurs wanting to open shops at ‘The Sixth Phuket’, because the company is prepared to promote the project via various channels. Public radio, print ads, online media and social media are being used to invite customers to contact the rental company to ensure the location is prime. The Patong area is popular with both residents and tourists throughout the year. The number of domestic tourists is more than 1.7 million people per year and foreign tourists are more than 1.2 million people per year. A large amount of people, with high purchasing power! There is no center with the same concept in this area.”

“IT’S NICE TO BUILD A NEW RESORT AND INCLUDE ALL OF THE WESTIN FEATURES”Greg Findlay GM of Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa PhuketWould you like to tell us a little about yourself?I am originally from New Zealand and have been working for Starwood for 17 years with the Westin and Sheraton brands, prior to hotels I gained my experience in the hospitality and airline industry. I started my career in hotels as a front office manager and then moved into the sales & marketing field,

8 years later after joining Sheraton I had my first position as a General Manager and have been in this role for over 10 years working in Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Thailand twice.

Did you train to work in the hospitality business? No actually I have a Bachelor’s degree in Science and majored in Geology. However upon completion of my studies I was involved with managing restaurants and then the airline industry. I only expected to work in the industry a couple of years but I ended up working for much longer. After making the move into the hotel industry I studied a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Studies in Australia. I have always loved the hospitality industry and working with people, so decided to stay and focus on the skills I had already gained. Greg Findlay

The resort is located on a steep hillside, all rooms, suites and villas offer stunning sea views.

How long have you been involved with this project and what has your role been? I have been involved since February 2009 when we started the majority of the pre opening work and implementing brand concepts and working with the architect, interior designer and construction team. To set up a Westin resort we have to ensure that the resort fits within our brand guidelines with facilities, interior design, fittings, fixtures and restaurant concepts. We also have to purchase all the hotel equipment, recruit and train the team and get them ready for an opening, plus develop sales & marketing strategies to open the hotel with.

What obstacles have you had to overcome with the new project like the Westin? The main obstacles with this project have been to do with completing the construction and the physical layout of the resort. The resort is built over 39 rai of land on a steep hillside. In total we have 40 separate buildings on this site that all require their own septic systems, electrical and fire safety and back up power systems which has been technically challenging given our dramatic building site. The fine tuning of details with a new project can also be quite time consuming and even more so when the resort is located on a steep hillside, but the views are well worth it! The recruitment of staff was relatively straight forward as Starwood is so well known and established here in Thailand, so the standard of applicants were high and we received a huge response.

What are the challenges of your hotel location? The East coast of Phuket is still very undeveloped as far as hotels and resorts are concerned. However I think being located so close to Phuket town is a bonus, as it is relatively undiscovered but has so much history and culture which adds to its unique local character. Phuket town is certainly still developing but there great eclectic shops, cafes and restaurants located in original Sino Portuguese shop houses. The East coast has great access to the surrounding islands which is also perfect for day trips and cuts down on the travel time if you compare to travelling from the West Coast. As the resort is located on a steep hillside, all of our rooms, suites and villas offer stunning sea views which I never tire of, so I believe the benefits far outweigh any challenges.

What is your customer base? Phuket has traditionally been popular with the Europeans, Russians and Australians as well as the regional Asian markets which have opened up even more due to direct flight access into Phuket. We are seeing, as is the rest of the world, a lot of growth out of the Chinese and Indian markets. We are lucky as Phuket is such a popular and well established tourist destination, as is Thailand.

How would you compare the opening of The Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa Phuket to The Westin Auckland? First of all The Westin Auckland was a corporate hotel and it was the first Westin hotel in New Zealand so the majority of our staff did not have previous Starwood experience. Starwood has many systems and guest programs which we use, so we had to undertake a comprehensive training program to arm the team with the knowledge they needed to prepare for an opening.

cuisine. We also have the first Heavenly Spa by Westin to open in Thailand which is a Westin branded spa so it gives our guests a cohesive hotel and spa experience, it has eight treatment rooms as well as suites with private spa, Jacuzzi and steam rooms. We also cater for families with children with our Westin Kids Club which put on daily activities to keep them occupied; many of them do not want to leave! The most spectacular thing about the resort is the view, you can see out to Phi Phi Island, Cape Panwa and Big Buddha on the hill, the sunsets are truly amazing.

What is next in terms of marketing for the resort? Phuket town and the East Coast of Phuket has great potential to really broaden tourists travel experience in Phuket which only adds to the variety so we will continue to promote this area of the island. As we are the first Westin resort to open in Thailand we would like to communicate more about our brand and that Westin is truly a lifestyle brand and our goal is to create a feel good wellness experience to all of our guests so they leave feeling better than when they arrived.

Here in Thailand most people are aware of our expectations and that of the brand and challenge has been more on the construction side and getting the project finished ready in time to open.

Can you tell us a bit about The Westin Siray Bay Resort & Spa Phuket?Westin is a lifestyle brand and as such we focus on wellness and ensuring that our guests leave feeling better than when they arrived. 1. Thai Boxing (Muay Thai)I used to be a lazy girl who never participated in sports. One day, one of my best friends persuaded me to try Muay Thai. One Sunday, evening during July last year, I went to Boat Lagoon Fitness with him to try it out and found it really excited me! Muay Thai not only makes me stronger and healthier but also motivates a chubby girl like me to be more active. Since then, I have been doing Muay Thai twice a week, at Boat Lagoon Fitness, with my personal trainer, Khun Pae, who has been doing Muay Thai since he was a little child. I love it!

2. Hosting lunches and making donations for those who need helpMy friends and I often go to host lunches and donate useful items for the residents of Phuket Sunshine Village, Baan Lung Pitak and Paklok Social Welfare Development Center.

MY TOP 10 THINGS TO DO ON PHUKET ISLAND

WE ASK KHUN PRAEW TO LET US KNOW HER TOP 10 WAYS TO SPEND HER FREE TIME HERE ON PHUKET ISLAND

There are so many homeless children and elderly people in Phuket. We usually visit institutions that support the less fortunate every 2-3 months. Last year I posted on my Facebook page that I wanted to raise money for Baan Lung Pitak, a place that looked after over 50 children during the day time. I felt very bad for the children because they did not receive enough support and care from their parents, due to circumstances such as imprisonment or working far away.

I managed to raise more than 20,000 THB from friends and relatives. The proceeds were used to buy pillows, towels, bed sheets, electric fans, books, toys, baby milk powder and other basic necessities for them. It was exhilarating to learn that people still care for others despite their hectic schedules, which may have had made them nonchalant to what’s going on around them.

Other activities that I enjoy to do in Phuket are usually simple. I do not need anything sophisticated, as long as I get to spend time with the people I love:

just to say Happy Birthday and give me a bouquet of flowers. I couldn’t hold my tears any longer. I cried a lot but it was tears of happiness. It is one of most unforgettable birthday parties I have ever had.

3. Theme Parties My girlfriends and I enjoy coming up with ideas for theme parties for our friend’s birthdays or other special occasions. Just the planning is fun by itself!

For example, we came up with a theme of “Wig and White” for my birthday in 2009. All the girls were required to wear wigs, while the guys had to wear white outfits. We started our night at the Point Bristol. It was very funny as other diners in the restaurant gave us very strange looks!

During the dinner, one of my friends asked me how I felt about my larger-than-life photo. Initially, I didn’t know what she was talking about, as I had not noticed anything unusual in the restaurant. When I turned myself around, OMG, I saw a big billboard photo of myself hanging on the wall. I was so shocked, but the billboard photo was very impressive.

Later, we moved on to Kor Tor Mor to continue with the celebration. My friends had prepared special birthday cup cakes and a crown made from sugar icing with my name on it. It was the most beautiful birthday cake I’ve ever received. Then, the last surprise was that three of my special friends from Bangkok had flown all the way down to Phuket just to say Happy Birthday and to give me a bouquet of flowers. I couldn’t hold my tears as I was overwhelmed with joy. It was one of the most unforgettable birthday parties I’ve ever had, and I was really grateful that I have a group of friends who really care for me.

Some readers may find the content of this interview controversial and some may find some comments offensive. However, the truth often hurts!

1.Could you tell us about yourself, your age (if Ok) where from etc?Would you like me to write a trilogy for you? I’m John Gray, I’m 66 and was born an environmentalist, taught to be humble but quietly understand I can do anything I want. I’ve lived ten lives. My friends are rich and powerful, poor and disadvantaged, but the true value of a person is in their heart - not their wallet. In fact, the more wealth you have, the more difficult it is to be a real person. My resume is attached.

2.How and why did you become involved with environmental issues? From birth, I was given the curse of vision, and I have eyes. We were given a miraculous gift Mother Earth - and we are destroying it.

We live in the most marvelous era in history, and the worst. Like our governments, we live beyond our means, and like any government or person who does so, we will collapse - It’s won’t be pretty, and it won’t matter if you are rich or poor. In fact, the rich will suffer more than the poor.

“DEDICATE YOUR LIFE TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE!”

3.What is the most important thing a person can do to help the environment?A - Be aware of the issues!B - Dedicate your life to making a difference!C - Consider your environmental footprint - your business, your wheels, your family and you!D - Don’t care what others think. Ten years after you upset them, they thank you for what you did.E - Do good just to be good! Don’t worry if anybody notices or not!F - Remember, all life comes from the same source, and all life is precious! G - Be vegan! Killing animals is bad karma, cruel and vicious no matter the justification (even if you didn’t kill what you eat). You eventually pay the price for killing - in heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes. Furthermore, animal husbandry contributes as much to greenhouse gas as cars and airplanes combined.

4.What is your opinion on the environmental state of Phuket?Low! I don’t blame anybody, but until the rich and common Thai people become environmentally aware, we are doomed. Education is the key, but when the rich don’t pay their taxes to support better education, the future is hopeless. In two generations time, it won’t matter if you are rich or poor - life will be miserable for everyone.

5.How can it be improved? We have to educate people to become aware of the

issues, and encourage them to do something about it. Get upset with incompetence and lack of awareness. Consider every action you do. Don’t worry about money.

Government officials must put Phuket and the public before themselves, and forget hierarchy. Set an example - Get down in the mud and plant mangroves with the school kids - on TV, so everybody gets the message. If you can’t do the mud walk, your are insignificant no matter your status and power- you are just a worthless animal, taking up space on Mother Earth.

Everybody must pay their taxes so we can create a strong government and educational system. Remember that corruption costs more than money - it costs all of us the future, even those who take the corruption. Corruption and criminal both start with the same letter.

6.If people would like to get involved with your project how can they do so?Call 076-254-505. That’s all. If you are Thai, be proud of Thailand, be proud to be Thai, and be proud you protect your own country!

If you are a tourist, be proud to help Thailand - and the Planet. We are all one! The rubbish you take from the Bay may have made it to your home country!
