Alpine National Park :- General Situated north east of Melbourne, encompassing most of the State's highest mountains and alps This massive and scattered National Park, composed of a number of a pre-existing parks, is subdivided for convenience, to reflect common terminology and for brevity:

Alpine National Park (Bogong): includes Hotham-Feathertop & Bogong High Plains, east to the Omeo Highway

Alpine National Park (Cobberas): includes The Cobberas & Tingaringy

Alpine National Park (Lake Dartmouth): includes Lake Dartmouth and Omeo areas

Alpine National Park (Licola): includes the Wonangetta-Moroka area, north to Mt Howitt and Mt Speculation

Alpine National Park (Wabonga): includes the area accessible from Whitfield, north of Mt Sterling. Bush camping is permitted in many areas of the Park, provided it is over 200m from main roads. However, there are few uncontrolled tracks off main roads.

Situated on an alpine plain, north of Licola, by the headwater of the Caledonia Rv. Access from Licola (58k N of Hayfield [C486], 77k N of Rosedale [C488]): north east 46k up Tamboritha Rd (29k gravel) to Arbuckle Junction, continue north 30.5k on the Howitt Rd, short access track on left (signed). Privacy Reasonable: 50m off low use tourist road

Site description Located in a stand of stand of Snow Gums by an old hut near an extensive snow plain. Horse yards nearby - popular with horse trail riders and flies. Reasonable shade provided by Snow Gums over short alpine grass. The site slopes gently and is a bit rough but there are a few level sites. Wildflowers are prolific in spring.

Privacy Reasonable: off (but overlooked by) a low use tourist road Site description Located in a gully by a small mountain creek near an extensive grassy snow plain, surrounded by Snow Gum ridges. Shade provided by Snow Gums over short alpine grass and wild flowers. Site slopes but there are reasonably level terraces. Pleasant alpine valley outlook. Popular with horse trail riders and flies. Warnings Roads closed in winter. Blizzards at any time. Potentially cold nights

Site description A large, level, gravelled car park separated from the road by snow gums and bush, adjacent to a small snow plain (wildflowers prolific in spring). One of the few areas suitable for caravans and large rigs on this section of the high plains.

4. Alpine NP (Licola) - Thomastown Type National Park, Bush camp

Situated in an alpine valley, north east of Licola Access from Licola (58k N of Hayfield [C486], 77k N of Rosedale [C488]): north east 40k up Tamboritha Rd (29k gravel) (3.6k past Arbuckle Saddle), turn left (west) 400m on Kelly's Lane (narrow, gravel) to Shaws Creek. Privacy Good: Well off low use tourist road Site description Very pleasant, quiet bush camping in a small alpine valley. Sites well dispersed either side of the bridge. Before the bridge are low ridge sites. Across the bridge creek-side flats. Sites are both open and shaded from Snow Gums over thick, short grass and wildflowers. Shaws Creek cascades between pools. Warnings Access closed by winter snow, seasonal gate at bridge. Blizzards at any time. Potentially cold nights

6. Alpine NP (Licola) - Moroka Bridge Type National Park, Informal/unofficial Situated in an alpine gully by the Moroka River nor-east of Licola. Access from Licola (58k N of Heyfield, 77k N of Rosedale [A1]): North east 46k (27k gravel) on the Tamboritha Rd to Arbuckle Junction, right (east) 25.5k on the Moroka Rd, left just before the bridge, 50m on a rough track to river flats. Privacy Reasonable: able to get well off low use tourist road

Site description A pleasant alpine bush camp on an extended, level, well drained river flat along the rushing Moroka Rv. Open woodland of Snow and Mountain Gums over short alpine grass (and wildflowers) with an understory of saplings and tea tree along the river. Wombats and wandering cattle are common. Short access track into the site is rocky and twisty. There is a small level site on the right just over the bridge, 100m off the road but access track is rough.

7. Alpine NP (Licola) - Horseyard Flat Type National Park, Camp Ground

Situated in an alpine valley on the Moroka River nor-east of Licola. Access from Licola (58k N of Heyfield, 77k N of Rosedale [A1]): North east 46k (27k gravel) on the Tamboritha Rd to Arbuckle Junction, right (east) 30k on the Moroka Rd, left 300m down a rough twisty, gravel track to the river flats. Privacy Very Good: Well off a very low use tourist road, near it's end. Site description A large pleasant area with dispersed sites. Gentle sloping open woodlands extend down to grassed alpine river flats and wooded areas in a broad valley. Reasonable shade provided by Snow Gums over short alpine grass. Features a tin hut and disintegrating horse yards. Some tracks damaged by 4 wheel drivers and wombats.

Activities Bush walking (Moroka Gorge, 12k return, hard, overnight recommended). Drive to the Pinnacles (12k), a rocky crag offering one of the most spectacular alpine views: overlooking the Wonnangatta Valley and, on a clear day, Mt Hotham and the Gippsland Lakes. Warnings Roads closed by snow in winter. Blizzards at any time. Potentially cold nights

25. Baw Baw Village - Car Parks (2) Type Reserve, Car Park Located 42k east of Noojee at the end of the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Rd. Access from Robin Hood [M1]: North 80k on route C426 via Neerim, Noojee and Tanjil Bren. The last 35k is well sealed but with continuous curves through lush mountain forest. The last 6k is steep. Privacy Good: Screened from the tourist road by thick bush.

Site description Two winter skiers car parks are usually open over summer.

1. Neulynes is located on the right 1.5k from the Reserve's entry gate. There are two sloping grass clearings surrounded by dense Alpine Ash. May be used as roadwork stock piles over summer.

2. The bus park is located adjacent to Baw Baw Village, 6k (steep) from the Reserve's entry gate. This is a gravelled level area partially exposed to the road, surrounded by Snow Gums and with a stunning view south across Gippsland but not suited to camp fires or tent camping.

26. Tanjil State Forest - Tanjil Junction Type State Forest, Informal/unofficial

Situated near the junction of the Tanjil River East & West Branches, north of Trafalgar. Access from the Willogrove Road about 2k south of Hill End, right (north-east) 3.7k on the Russell Creek Rd (gravel), right (north-east) 5.6k down the Rowley Ridge Rd (unmaintained gravel) to the river, 100m beyond the bridge, on the right. Site description An old forestry camp and gravel pit near the junction of the East and West branches of the Tanjil Rivers. A rather disappointing site in lush, attractive forest - little shade from saplings over level gravel. Surrounded by Messmate and white trunked Mountain Grey Gum forest with dense undergrowth on steep hillsides. There are good riverside camps with 4-wheel drive access about 500m each side of the bridge, popular for fishing. Warnings Rowley Ridge Rd is unmaintained - becoming overgrown and washed out Privacy Good: remote forest, off a very low use road

Situated by the Tyers River (West Branch), north of Moe, west of Rawson, at the base of Mt Baw Baw. Access from Moe [A1]: North 27.5k up the Moe-Rawson Rd [C466] (3.5k S of Erica), left (west) 6k on Talbit Rd (gravel) almost to Tyers Junction, left (west) 4k on Morgans Mill (Western Tyers) Rd (unmaintained gravel) to a locked gate (500m from site), left (south-west) 5k up Beynon Cr Rd, right (north-west) 2.2k on the Tanjil Bren Rd, right (north) 3.4k down Palmer Track, right (west) on Western Tyres Rd, cross river to camp site. Surrounded by dense State Forest. Noisy if Scouts in camp, excellent out of season

Site description Attractive, green, grassed (slashed) river flats near the junction of the two arms of the Tyres River in a forested valley. Well shaded by tall Mountain Ash. Semi-dispersed sites separated by tea tree and wattle in tall forest. Could be dusty and noisy if Scouts are in the nearby camp.

Site description Scattered, forested sites around a picturesque mining ghost town near a large mountain river surrounded by steep forest slopes. Most sites slope a little, are well shaded (some by oaks). Tree ferns abound. Popular canoe landing/camping point. On original coach road to Walhalla.

valley. There are three informal camps at the southern end of the „town‟:

One is opposite the railway station, on the left just before Walhalla Rd first crosses Stringer Creek, is small, secluded and very well shaded, with wood BBQ & bin.

Another is on the right, just past the railway station, reasonably large, level and shaded with bin.

Situated on the northern edge of Walhalla by Stringer Creek, north of Moe, east of Rawson. Access from Moe [A1]: North 48k on the Moe-Rawson Rd [C466] to Rawson, south 2k on Tyers-Thomson Valley Rd [C481], left (east) 11k on Walhalla Rd [C461] to Walhalla. Continue north 1k to the "town" edge and signposted camping ground on the left across Stringer Creek. Privacy Reasonable: Open to a low use tourist/forest mountain road Site description An attractive, well maintained park on the edge of a picturesque historic gold mining ghost town, in a narrow, forested mountain valley. Car park is large and level, but best for tent camping on extended lawns. Free gas BBQ as well as wood fire pits. Little shade until late afternoon. North Gardens was the terminus for timber tramways supplying the mines. There is an informal bush camp 4k north of Walhalla, a level gravel clearing off the Walhalla Rd (about 2k gravel) on the nose of a ridge (Britannia Spur) surrounded by dense montane forest.

Site description A small ridge top picnic ground hemmed in by a few pines and dense montane forest - regenerated Alpine Ash with a thick scrub understory. Located near the overgrown site of a large timber town on a remote, sub-alpine forested plateau above the headwaters of the Yarra, Thomson and Latrobe Rivers. Almost hidden from a low use forestry road, the site is rarely used; one toilet has collapsed, the other stores a good stock of firewood. A larger, more open, bush camp site is available on the left 1.5k south down the Link Rd, not far past the Mt Toorongo Track junction.

Site description A small, level clearing on a low ridge above the Avon River. Situated in a dry sclerophyll forest just off the little used Wombat Road this is a quiet but rather scruffy, dusty site in a reasonably attractive, forested area. Good shade from Red Box and Gippsland Red Gum with an understory of scattered wattle, heath scrub and large patches of Everlasting flowers. The Avon River, about 50m down through the scrub, is broad and gravelled, just emerging from the narrows of "The Channel" gorge.

45. Valencia Creek State Forest - Paddy Lee's Crossing Type State Forest, Picnic Ground

Situated by the Valencia Creek, north of Maffra, north-west of Stratford. Access from Maffra [C150]: North 13k on the Maffra-Briagolong Rd [C493], left (north) 6k on the Valencia Creek-Bushy Park Rd to the Valencia Creek-Briagolong Rd, continue north on the Moroka Rd 17k (13k gravel, narrow sections), on the left immediately after crossing the cement ford. Privacy Reasonable: open to a very low use road (unmaintained 4 wheel drive shortly after the crossing) Site description A very small well grassed (long) level site immediately above and overlooking the Valencia Creek. This is the start of the 96 Walking Track - 60k to Granite Creek on the Dargo Road and facilities are new. The designated camping area is grassed and well shaded but designed for tent camping - the fenced car park slopes and is open to Freestone Rd. Just beyond the start of the gravel is a second car park which is level, although the short access track may be eroded and it is still close to Freestone Rd. Surrounded by a dry sclerophyll forest of Red Box, Messmate Stringybark, Ironbark and a few Gippsland Red Gums with an understory of wattle, casuarina and Tea-tree. Backed by dry sclerophyll forest on the surrounding steep slopes. Wombats, possums, Magpies, Whip birds and Kookaburras are common. Peregrine Falcon and Lyrebird may be seen. There is a walking track 0.5k back to Blue Pool, part of the 96 Walking Track. The bubbly Freestone Creek runs through a rocky gorge with long pebbly pools.

Situated north of the Princes Freeway [M1] between Warragul and Pakenham Access from Pakenham: East 20k on the Princes Freeway [M1] (past Gumbaya Park), left (north) 1k down the Garfield North Road, right into the signposted reserve through pine trees. Privacy Good: Well off roads, although may be crowded by horses at weekends. Site description A large level, grassed area. Although surrounded by scrub there is minimal shade. Many of the stunted Stringybark trees are suffering from die-back. The adjoining small Cannibal Cr is swampy, facilitating dense Swamp Tea-tree. Birds, including Bell-birds, are common. The reserve is a popular pony club facility. Toilets may be locked. The access road (Old Sale Rd) is part of the original Gippsland main road. Conveniently located 76k east of Melbourne for an overnight stop. Formal camp area on right just inside entry gate (1 power outlet). There is a well shaded, grassed, secluded, bush camp site by the eastern end of the Reserve, about 800m from the entry.

Site description Dispersed riverside camping in dry sclerophyll forest well off main roads by an attractive river. Kookaburras and wrens are common as are wombats and goannas. Sites may be dusty, few are grassed. All sites show signs of popularity - they are a little scruffy. Access from Robin Hood [M1]: North 36k on route C426 via Neerim to Noojee, left (north) at the Noojee T junction 500m up the Lock Valley Rd (Bennet Street), past the shop, on the right before the bridge. Privacy Reasonable: Most sites observable from adjacent road, but with limited, local traffic.

Privacy Reasonable: Most sites exposed to day trippers. Site description Situated at the head of an attractive, narrow valley are three grassed clearings by the bubbling Toorongo River and surrounded by lush wet sclerophyll forest:

The first site, by the entry gate, is a small, grassed flat with little shade and no facilities.

The second is a large grassed hillside with few level or shaded sites.

The third, accessed by a road below the toilet block, is a creek flat enclosed by steep slopes with some level, shaded riverside sites and a second toilet.

All sites are exposed to day trippers and show signs of popularity - they are a little scruffy. Shade is provided by steep mountains, mature Mountain Ash and scattered Blackwood wattles. Kookaburras and rosellas are common. The access road continues on a few hundred metres around the hill side to end at the day park, with an information board and tracks to the tumbling falls.

Site description A small, level clearing on river flats by the bubbling Loch Rv, surrounded by forested hills. Good shade provided by tall saplings - Mountain Ash and wattles. Site description A pleasant, forested hillside site extending down to a large, cleared river flat. The hillside area is screened from the forestry road and well shaded by Mountain Ash, has 3 benches and the WC but all sites slope. The level river flat clearing is surrounded by tall Mountain Ash and wattle. The grass is roughly slashed and ruts indicate it is boggy if wet. The access track to the flat is rutted. Access to the small bubbling river may be constrained by blackberry.

Wheel ruts indicate that the lower slopes may be boggy &/or popular with 4-wheel drivers. Access to the river may be constrained by blackberry. 17 Noojee State Forest - The Poplars Type State Forest, Camp Ground Situated in lush forest by the Lock River, north of Warragul, north of Noojee. Access from Robin Hood [M1]: North 36k on route C426 via Neerim to Noojee, left (north) at the Noojee T junction 9.7k up the Lock Valley Rd (6k sealed) (starts as Bennet Street, ends as Lock Valley Extension Rd), on the left 300m past the Toorongo Rd junction. Privacy Reasonable: adjacent to a low use forest road Site description An extended grassy flat along the Lock River, surrounded by forested hills, adjacent to a little used forestry road. All sites are level, most are shaded by poplars, apples and tall Mountain Ash in an open, park-like setting, (an old forestry camp) surrounded by wattles and blackberry. Gravel internal access roads but some grassed areas may be boggy if wet (fenced off in 2004). A very pleasant site, popular with groups. 2 tables, 1 BBQ. Site description Secluded, attractive, extended grassy flat in a horseshoe bend of the small Tyers Rv. Shaded by tea tree and wattle (which separate sites) short green grass (slashed), surrounded by Messmate and Southern Blue Gum covered ridges. Kookaburras and a multitude of small birds are common. A very pleasant, quiet camp but popular at peak periods. Moondarra is an area of botanical, zoological and geological significance. Yertchuck (prickly stringybark) is an uncommon vegetation type, combined with banksia, hakea and a ground layer of spear grass, sedges, orchids and lilies - mainly to the east of the camp.

2. Moe - Lake Narracan Caravan Park Type LG Reserve, Caravan Park

Situated on the south-western shore of Lake Narracan, 5k north-east of Moe. Access from Moe via the Glengarry Rd [C103] (signposted John Field Rd), left (north) 1k on Sullivans Track to the lake, left 200m. Privacy Good: Well off main roads. Site description A rather scruffy caravan park but it can be quiet - at road end well off main roads - except at peak periods. Not all sites are shaded, although a thick band of gums on the west provides afternoon shade. Physical facilities are well established but a little old and worn. View of the lake, a popular water sports venue, is blocked by the kiosk/caretakers cottage.

creek flat between the low use country road and upper west arm of the small Tarwin River. Recently most of the flats have been fenced and 2 small, fenced parking bays (gravelled) have been installed in the open clearing (no shade), extensive re-vegetation planting undertaken and one BBQ provided 100m away - designed for tent camping. Site description A pleasant, grassed (slashed), gently sloping picnic ground, shaded by Yellow Stringybark and white trunked Mountain Grey Gums by a swampy water hole surrounded by wattle and green bush. The fenced 4 tables & BBQs are across the access road from the parking area - best for tent camping. Rosellas, cockatoos and kookaburras are common. Koalas, kangaroos, wombats can be found through the forest 100m east of the formal picnic area is a semi-secluded level clearing with one table, shaded and surrounded by bush, vehicle accessible.

Accessed off the South Gippsland [B440] Hwy 43k south of Sale (right, east, 8k on Middle Rd, right, south on Jack Smith Beach Rd (narrow, gravel causeway)), OR 47k south of Sale (right, east, on Dewars Rd (gravel) , right, south on Maryland Rd, left east on Stringybark Lane). Tracks lead to lake edge and Ninety Mile Beach. Also accessible from Woodside via Stringybark Lane and from Woodside Beach via Byrnes Rd, to the southern edge of the lake. By the wharf at Port Albert, at the end of the Yarram/Port Albert Rd [C452] (Wharf Street) Privacy Poor: roadside and road end car parking Site description Road-end turning circle car park (sealed, level) near the small wharf, overlooking Shallow Inlet and Corner Inlet towards Wilsons Promontory. Some shade from Norfolk Pines. Small picnic areas well grassed (mown). Open to wind. Street lights. Walk to hotel and 2 fish & chip shops (one has won awards - best fish & chips in Victoria). Camping prohibited in nearby boat trailer park.

Situated in a forested gully by Dingo Creek, north of Welshpool. Access from Welshpool [A440]: north 14.5k up Woorarra Rd (Morwell-Welshpool Rd) [200m past Proctors' phone exchange], left (north west) 1.6k down Dingo Creek Rd (narrow, twisty gravel) [signed 4 wheel but OK until after crossing the Dingo Creek]. Warnings Dingo Cr Rd probably too narrow & twisty for big rigs, although it has a good grade. Check grass areas after rain. Site description A very pleasant green grassed (slashed) creek flat in the steep gully of the bubbling Turtons Creek, below the falls. Shaded by tall Mountain Ash Gums, blackwood and tree ferns. Regeneration plantings will improve shade and privacy. Surrounded by steep forested hills. A smaller, secluded site upstream of the main clearing has a table. Wrens are common. Lyrebirds and platypus may be seen. There is a small green level picnic/camping ground 500m above the waterfall, but completely open to the road.

40. Gunyah - Hotel site

Type State Forest, Bush camp

Situated on the Strzelecki Range ridge top, surrounded by forest. Access from Mirboo North: South east 27k on the Grand Ridge Road (gravel) (3k east of the Gunyah Junction, 100m west of the Hatchery Rd junction), left (north) on a signed, short, gravelled track. Privacy Good: Secluded by bush from the low use tourist road.

Shaded by a row of tall Cyprus pine plus mountain ash, blackwood, and silver wattle. Rosellas, wallaby, wombats and wrens are common. Gunyah hotel was built about 1900, burnt down in 1942
