GATEWAYS Support Services have launched the inaugural Gateways Film Festival of Amazing Shorts ‘GAFFAS’ to highlight the positive contributions that people with disabilities make to their families and the community.

Geelong’s most famous film star, Guy Pearce, has generously thrown his support behind the initiative, encouraging local film makers to enter the GAFFAS short film contest.

“I’m very excited about the launch of GAFFAS - Gateways Film Festival of Amazing Shorts! This is a real chance for budding film makers to express their talents through a short film, showing us the many facets of life for people with disabilities. It’s an opportunity to celebrate diversity as well as perhaps highlight some of the hurdles faced in everyday life. Films can be fun, moody, educational, inspirational…Anything you want really…So get your camera’s rolling and let’s see what you’ve got,” Guy Pearce said.

Gateways Support Services CEO, Rosemary Malone said the GAFFAS are an opportunity for film makers and even people who have never

made a film before, to share their untold stories.

“Over the years we have met many amazing people with stories of courage, humour, determination, self-belief, joy and friendship. This is a chance for their stories to be told and I can’t wait to see them up on the big screen,” Rosemary Malone said.

Gateways Support Services is based in Geelong West and empowers and supports children and adults who have a disability/additional need and their families.

Entries for the GAFFAS close on November 6. Details at gateways.com.au.

Coffee. A lot us drink it, but how many actually stop to think about what it is and where it comes from?Melbourne is regarded as one of the premier cities in the world for good coffee. The city is obsessed with it and it’s filtering through to the rest of the state, including our pocket of the world here in the Geelong region. I’ve just completed an intensive five-week barista course at Gordon Tafe in Geelong under the expert tutorial of Rowan Sapwell, where I not only learned how to make a mean cup of coffee and perform a basic love-heart on the surface of a sumptuous latte, I also learned about coffee beans, how to adjust the grinder, how

to perform basic maintenance and so much more. Which leads me back to my question. How many of us really think about the coffee we drink each morning?Coffee beans can only be grown in tropical climates. Brazil is the biggest coffee producer in the world and coffee is the second-largest tradeable commodity on the planet (behind oil) and the second-most popular drink (behind water).Coffee is much like wine. You can taste a variety of different flavours in a single espresso shot – citrus, chocolate, toffee etc. Professional tasters do so in much the same way as a wine taster – smell, taste, texture, body, different regions

9

and countries. It’s a serious business.Next time you buy a coffee from a café, ask the barista where the beans come from. Ask how that bean in particular tastes in a milk-based coffee drink as opposed to a black coffee. The barista should know the answers and should be happy to provide the information. I find Ethiopian coffee to be the best tasting - strong, bold and flavoursome. Coffee Cartel in Breakwater (and in the city) does a superb Ethiopian single origin that tastes exquisite with milk. Some of the best coffees are blends of more than one bean. You can enjoy a taste of Yemen, Costa Rica and El Salvador in the one cup (much

the same as a shiraz grenache mourvedre!).Geelong is catching up to Melbourne in a big way. There are several world-class local venues that serve superb coffee, take their beans very seriously and have invested in state-of-the-art coffee machines that cost the same as a new car.So as you can see, coffee is so much more than just your morning caffeine hit. Each sip is like a lesson in geography and horticulture. Even just the basic knowledge of beans and the way the coffee makes its way from tree to cup, can heighten the experience that most of us tend to take for granted.

THE journey to Pako's Nurse Practioner Clinic adds to the knowledge Rina Glucina brings to the area. Rina has spent the last decade solely managing medical clinics for indigenous communities in the most remote places in the outback.

Her last outback medical clinic was a six hour drive on a dirt road from Kalgoorlie. There she dealt with everything, from the simple everyday issues of children and family health, to emergencies such as car roĺl overs.

Now, after over 40 years experience spanning every aspect of nursing, from army hospitals, children's wards to aged care, Rina has finally realised her dream and has opened up her own fully equipped medical clinic in Pakington Street. She welcomes all new patients for medical consultations from Monday to Friday.

For those who prefer a holistic approach to their

health and well being, the clinic is open on Saturday for Holistic Health Therapy and Hot Stone massage. Rina offers Therapeutic Touch, which is a holistic approach to nursing, that she studied during her Masters at Flinders University.

Therapeutic Touch is a non invasive technique, based on the belief that human beings

when healthy have a balanced and free flowing energy field which becomes imbalanced and blocked with illness and disease. Therapeutic Touch clears negative energy, enabling it to flow and rebalance.

For further information about the clinic visit the website www.npfamilyclinic.com.

Long way from the outback to Pako

Rina Glucina is now running a clinic on Pakington Street, a far cry from working in the outback.

Arthur Bannon / BeastsWe are delighted to again

exhibit the work of Arthur Bannon (aka James Price).

After a decade based in New York overseeing a highly successful advertising company Bannon has returned home to Victoria, changed his name, and decided to focus on his true

passion – making art.Beasts is a group of

painterly images of animals, exploring ideas around existence, survival and liberty. A survival that hinges on the balance of freedom and fear.

This idea parallels itself in Bannon’s work, with finding the balance between abstraction and representation.

“The desire to be free,

but to convey. This is never more evident than in my image making process. Each image begins as an extensively planned sketch. I then translate the sketch to a painting, applying the paint as freely as I can. During the translation process I put the plans away and paint purely from what I feel the painting needs. It's at this point I feel most conflicted - liberated by the

possibilities, constrained by the form.”

Ren Inei / Above the Heave, Below the Blanket

Above the Heave Below the Blanket is a new body of paintings by Ren Inei. The work continues his exploration of the skyscape as subject matter. He depicts through oil paint not how the sky looks but rather how it makes him feel and

how he intends to make others feel. Each work is an abstraction and painted from memory not from observation nor developed from photographs.

"The focus of my artwork is the sky above the heave of everyday life. A world above the mundane, above the repetition of living and the toll of ageing. Above the heave exists a dreamlike place .... one of constant change and movement but also of certainty and endurance. Below the blanket is where the viewer looks up but is never able to see in full but rather just hold onto one moment of sky at a time."

Ren Inei is a painter, he is also one half of the team behind Boom Gallery, curating and hanging the exhibitions and liaising with the many artists who show at Boom.

Ren completed studies at Deakin University in

the early 1990’s and has sustained a consistent art practice since, participating in many exhibitions (both group and solo).

His work is rich with texture and tonal depth, achieved through techniques of layering and exploration of differing materials. Natalie Anderson / Meetings with the Southern Ocean

Nat Anderson is a Geelong artist whose current subject is drawn from her constant, almost obsessive rambling walks along the southern ocean coastline. Painted with a limited palette reminiscent of the old masters, Natalie’s strong sense of colour and use of light and dark explores traditional genres reinterpreted in a contemporary context. Landscape takes on a sort of “other worldliness” as she examines just exactly why sea and sky changes her. Paint

becomes a vehicle through which she can relive her experiences of being in these places. The aim is simply to create honest work that means something to her but that also stirs the viewer to look at the beauty of our coastline in new ways.

“Meetings with the Southern Ocean is a frank celebration of the surging beauty of the Southern ocean - but it also contemplative and questions how we can open ourselves to a greater understanding of what the natural environment has to tell us. It urges us to suspend judgment, to abstain from interpretation and just participate in ‘seeing’ what is all around us and yet so often overlooked. You will see no trace of human intervention in this work. Our job is to simply to view, watch and breathe it in.”

Guenter Sahr has lived in Geelong West for 43 years. He and his wife love the place. Guenter even served in the old Geelong West council. “Geelong West's heart is its people and its aorta is Pakington Street,” he said. He’s tried to capture this in the following poem - On Pakington Street.

And I’m caught one more timedown on Pakington Street.Caught one more time, on Pako Street.I’m caught by the sunlight zig-zagging through the Yunans’ canopiesall dappling green and gold and sweet.

And I’m in thrall of Boccioni-sculpted calves erupting from ultra high-heeled shoes.Way on down, way on down, way on down Pako Street.

Sitting at a table on the side-walk, drinking my coffee long and neat,I’m catching conversations’ snippetsrainbowing between the people walking

up and down the street.

There go the girls. There go five girls dressed up andall shining for each other. One says, “He says, ‘well, will ya?’ andI say, ‘as if!’ –and it’s all over”.And there’s a trio of white-bearded bikersthump, thumpety, thumpingto a stop for the redat Albert and Candover.

And here comes the man, here comes the man. Here comes the manwith his brindle boxer bitch. He slows down, nods to my nod, andlet’s his Cleo nuzzle my thigh.“G’day fer it”, he says, conferring his gift. And, gently rubbing Cleo’s head,I lean back, shut my eyes, soaking up the springtime sun climbing on high.

Here come the kids. Here come the kids. Here come the kidsfrom the local school. They’re a centipede of frissonmoving along the sidewalk in theirchattering, laughing two-by-twos.There’s a teacher up the front witha little kid on either hand,a placid mother’s in the middle of the file, and trailing at the rear is a teacher making sure no straggler’s left behind.

And here come the twins. Here come the twins,oh so, oh so petite, petite.Impeccably coutured they are, they are,in their Perri Cutten plaid skirts, grey stockinged legs and black brogue feet.

And, there, squatting against a wallon the sunny side of the street –acting as a human weather-vane –is our homeless guy, whom everyone knows by name.

A peloton of cyclists gathers at Michael’s turreted caféordering espressos and pretty little bottles of aranciata rossafor to quench their thirsts.Squeezed into spandex shorts and

macho Italian tees it’s a riot of color as theyhobble back and forth in clip-ons, going tee-ta,tee-ta, teet.

And here they come. Here they come, here they come. Here come the yummy mums.Done dropping off their kids at school, they’ve come from power aerobicsor breaking lap-times at the swimming pool.O.Olympians all, emerging from the viridian-golden haze of heat, they stride in three-quarter leggingsdown upondown upondown upon the sidewalk of Pako Street.Sweeping full-force into Rushies, the mums stake out their table by the window in the glory of their sun,and call for skinny lattes –SKINNY latte, skinny LATTE –with side orders of sticky, sticky buns.

WALKING through 4 Margaret Street for the first time is like a breath of fresh air. This is a fine display of a timeless fusion between old world charm and contemporary excellence.

This heritage listed house has all of its period charm dating back to 1929, however, even surveyors have missed that the western part is actually an extension seamlessly added in 2008. The current owners have been meticulous in their choice of luxury finishes, chic style and presentation but above all their eye for detail and exquisite design.

Margaret Street is a quiet tree-lined street located in the heart of Newtown and only moments away from some of the best and reputable schools in the region such as The Geelong College, Sacred Heart and St. Josephs College. You are also walking distance to all major amenities including shops and cafes and a short drive to the CBD and Geelong Waterfront.

Upon entry you will be greeted with a private manicured front garden and stunning original leadlight double doors with refined Grey Box Timber

hardwood floors that run throughout the home. The soaring ceilings, open plan living and neutral décor combine with a plethora of natural light sets a calm and pure environment. Comprising four well sized bedrooms all with built in robes.

There is more than meets the eye with the master bedroom. The ensuite is remarkable with floor- to- ceiling tiles, stone bench tops as well as concealed storage and cabinets hidden behind mirrors and beneath the vanity as handle free drawers. This is repeated in the main bathroom which also retains the homes original leadlight

windows. The master bedroom opens onto an enclosed outdoor entertainment space and has been finished with custom light fittings.

The expansive lounge area has been built around a stunning original leadlight bay window which really sets the old world charm about this home. The result of adding a bay window in this area is a glass expanse that floods natural light across the timber floors. The open plan dining/kitchen area sports custom light fittings and chic box set windows. The chef ’s kitchen is the central hub of the home and has been finished tastefully

with German-made stainless steel appliances, including intergrated dishwasher, stone 40mm bench tops, gas cooking, built in wine rack and designer pendant lights.

The kitchen conveniently looks over the temperature controlled outdoor kitchen/entertainment area which includes a top of the range, brand new, plumbed in Beefeater barbeque, 20mm solid blue stone tiles and a wet bar –perfect for family breakfasts. Vertical sliding blinds wall the space off from the courtyard-style rear yard.

This home comes with an abundance of features some of

which I have mentioned above; here are a few more which complete this simply amazing home. Features include, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, 21m frontage, 180 –degree hinges that are currently used to conceal a TV when the 4th bedroom isn’t being used, roman blinds and an oversized single lock up garage with plenty of room for additional cars down the side of the house.

This home is a one of a kind located in Geelong’s most desirable location; take the tour today to really understand what this Newtown home is really all about.

What is your business and what does it do? Core Boardsports is a dedicated Stand Up Paddle Windsurf, Kitesurf and Electric Skate Board specialist retailer and distributor located at 9 Fernleigh St Newtown. We are the largest store of its kind across the Geelong and Surf Coast region and carry at any time in excess of 50 Boards in stock. We only specialise in the best brands globally (Naish, Fanatic, Goya, Quatro, North and Evolve to name a few).

How long have you done this? Core was established in 2009 so is now in its 6th year of operation and is coming up to two years since we moved the showroom into our dedicated premises at 9 Fernleigh St Newtown. I brought the business in October 2013 and have moved the brand to a more mainstream Retail model.

Who else is involved in the business? How many staff? Our founder and shareholder international yachtsman Nick Moloney who now resides in Hong Kong, myself the new owner and managing director and or two casual summer time staff.

What did you do before this? I spent over 20 years working in the automotive industry in various management roles for Toyota and Consulting firms and most recently Carsales.com.au. I spent four years working and living in Japan and travelling extensively throughout Asia. You could say by giving up all of that and buying a watersports brand I have come back to pursue my passions of being in and on the ocean and moving back to where I grew up.

Why a business in Newtown / Geelong West? Newtown offers us a very central

location and hub to service the greater Geelong and Bellarine and Surf Coast region. We truly have a fantastic customer base from all over the region and

our showroom is very much a destination store where friends and customers come to browse and discuss their paddling windsurfing and kiting locations

in a truly hassle free environment.

How’s your business going? Core is growing significantly as more and more people get into

the healthy sport of stand up paddle (the fastest growing water sport in the world). Our location whilst hidden away physically is certainly very public through

our strength and reach in social media and support sponsorship and organisation of local events which include demo days race days and our very public support

of the Channel 7 Sunrise Map of the Lap tour where we provided Weather girl Edwina Bartholomew with a SUP Board to take on their journey.

In the next few months we have four major events:October 11 – Starboard SUP Demo at Cosy Corner TorquayOctober 25 – Fanatic and North Demo Day at Barwon HeadsNovember 15 – Get Stoked and Eastern Beach SUP race and Naish Demo Day

What other plans do you have?We would like to see Core as the largest stand up paddle retail brand in Victoria and we are confident we are already moving in that direction as we broaden our market coverage into the Melbourne population. At Core we pride ourselves on offering expert advice and support across the sports we represent so that our customers are more than that they become friends and advocates for our brand. In a very short space of time we are one of the most recognised retail brands in the industry not just in our

region but across Australia.

Are you/would you like to be involved in helping/sponsoring the community? In what way?We are always looking for ways to support local events and charities based around the stand up paddle sport in particular. For the last two years we have sponsored the RecLink Paddle event also held at Eastern Beach and will continue that relationship.

What are your passions away from the business? Haha stand up paddle and windsurfing ! I don’t really call it work

TRAVEL on pakoBy Candice Free, Cruiseabout Pakington Street

“SOUTH America, never, no way, there’s huge spiders over there” has been a familiar refrain of mine for the last few years, however when offered the chance to visit thanks to LATAM Airlines and Adventure World, this quickly became “Sure, I’ll just take a large can of Mortein” and wow am I glad I overcame that fear and said yes!

Whilst the flight to Rio was long, it was comfortable on LATAMs 787 Dreamliner which offered plenty of leg room even in economy, tasty meals and a great on demand entertainment system.

A feature of the Dreamliner

is that the windows are around 40 per cent larger than on other aircraft making the plane seem much more spacious.

First impressions of Brazil were that it is a vibrant country with warm, welcoming people and is full of travel experiences for every type of traveler.

Adventure World put together a wonderful itinerary which took in the major tourist attractions of Rio including the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain to check out stunning views of Rio; the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, and Copacabana Beach, a beautiful place for a walk at sunrise before the many

thousands arrive for their day at the beach. A unique Carnival Experience at the headquarters of one of the major Samba schools was a highlight which included samba dancing, strangely enough our Samba skills seemed to increase in direct proportion to the amount of Caipiriniha’s we had drunk. (Traditional rum based drink which are offered EVERYWHERE and at all times)

The Brazilian Amazon should be on everyone’s bucket list, watching the sun rise over the pristine rainforest was a magical experience that I will never forget. A day trip to the Meeting

of the Waters, the spectacular merge of Negro and Solimões Rivers on the MV Desafio, a Portuguese style schooner was an unexpected day of luxury in the wild. A nature hike really bought home to me just how many of our modern medicines have come from this area and the local Indians knowledge of the flora and fauna is incredible.

Whilst the Brazilians say Rio is the heart of their country, Salvador is said to be the soul, and this city certainly had a lot of soul. Drum bands of 50 plus people making awesome samba rhythms in the town square, traditional food eaten in brightly

colored restaurants overlooking the cobble stone streets plus a place which very quickly became our meeting place for the few days we were there, a travel agency that doubled as a bar (I’m still working on this idea for our office...) made this city my favourite of all we visited.

Anyone looking to head to South America really needs to come and see us to chat about their options and we can help tailor your dream holiday whether it be via land or sea.

Candice, Amber and Dave are located at Cruiseabout Pakington St, 172 Pakington St Geelong West.

Blocks a cut above restIAN Royce has been making butchers blocks in Geelong for over 25 years.

Ian and his business IHR Antiques has the reputation for building nothing but quality products and that is why they were asked to get on board with the MasterChef TV series.

The shows have used their products as gifts for most of the visiting international chefs that appear on the show.

I H Antiques make three different types of products: cutting boards, food preparation tables and grain butchers blocks.

The butchers blocks are the best you can buy and are regularly shipped out to Asia, Europe and America.

I H Antiques custom build but also have standard design styles and colours that they can match with any Dulux colour. They also welcome customers’ own sketches.

The idea came about because Ian, who was in hospitality, wanted a butchers block for his own use but was not happy with those he found. Most were very flimsy and hard to clean and would cross contaminate.

Being a passionate good worker Ian thought he could do better and 25 years later he is recognised as one of the world's greatest butchers block makers.

Prices range from $799-$3,000 for their standard products, although about 50 per cent are custom made.

No One does lights like PeterDID you know that Peter does lighting consultations?

The best lighting is imperative for the ambience of any room. Whether you wanted something classy and understated or a wow piece, it is more than function – a beautiful light is art.

It can be confronting choosing the “right” piece. A piece that represents

you, your family, your home. Some people want to restore their period home authentically. Some people want to give their period home a modern edge whilst others want their modern home to be enhanced with an accent of Old World charm. Whichever way it is important to remain sympathetic to architectural features or the light will look awkward.

Peter has consulted to thousands of people in Geelong across a great variety of projects. With his extensive knowledge of period home architecture

combined with his understanding of lighting and artistic flair.

His beautiful collection of lights spanning all era’s from the time electricity

was first wired into homes (and also some before). All his lights are artfully restored to their original magnificence with new safe wiring. It makes

a happy investment in beautiful craftsmanship. Peter welcomes you to call in at Newtown's Oakwood Restorations and discuss your plans.

Hello foodies, Another month , another café

or restaurant for grub guide to get down to.

This time we headed to Pakington Pantry situated down the river end of pako.

On this particular day we were lucky enough to witness “Pako Pantry” in its prime, beautiful sunshine filled the café and a cool crisp breeze was upon as all the windows and

doors were open.Pako Pantry as the locals call

it seems to be the new favourite between my group of friends, I have been told numerous times that we must head there for a fresh juice and a hearty breakfast or lunch and lunch is what we did.

We ordered the beautiful burger and fresh crisp salad.

The burger was big and what I described to be “epic man

food” layered on a soft bun with lettuce, meat, sauce and topped with onion rings.

The other half of grub guide, a self confessed carnivore, devoured it in a heart beat and said it was up there with one of the best burgers he has had in a while.

I ordered a fresh red quinoa salad with roasted veg, fresh citrus oranges, pomegranate, herbs and yummy goats cheese.

The perfect salad on a spring day, maybe pair it with one of the fresh juices Pako Pantry has on offer.

The atmosphere here is fantastic, the service is consistent and the staff are very attentive to your needs.

I really liked that the menu caters for everyone with all day breakfast, lunch menu, kids menu, juices, hot/cold drinks as well as catering for a lot of

dietary requirements. There are plenty of gluten

free and vegetarian options which I thought was very impressive.

It’s a busy little café and I would recommend booking yourself and your group a table so you don’t miss out.

And by the looks of it they seem to be opening Friday and Saturday evenings for wood fired pizzas. YUM!

Epic 'man food' a winner
