The theme for this biennium is Toward Greater Horizons. During this bienni-um, we will work to build the future of

Alpha Delta State by moving Toward Greater Horizons.

One way to move Toward Greater Horizons is by increasing membership. One membership source is young teach-ers seeking a professional organizationto join. All members, including retirees, can search for prospective members.

New members can be sought in your grandchildrens schools, a school whereyou volunteer, or in your church. Per-haps, life circumstances have changedand a former member would like to be

reinstated. Chances are, she will not callyou. You will need to call her. To move the State organization

forward, chapters must be strengthened. Various methods may be tried to strengthenyour chapter. These methods may include but are not limited to the following:

Hold well planned, quick -moving business meetings four - six times per year; Meet at varied times, days, and places convenient for working members; Meet for approximately one and one -half hours in length, excluding meals; Focus on meeting members social as well as professional needs; Plan high -quality, interesting programs and speakers, including programs thathighlight community initiatives and those that use members talents/expertise; Support a variety of one -time and ongoing projects that actively engage members;Support projects in the areas of mentoring/supporting new educators, grants to

student teachers, community initiativesespecially for women and children, andliteracy. Another way for us to move our Society Toward Greater Horizons, is to accept a

leadership position in your chapter. Soon, chapter nominations committees will bemeeting to prepare a slate of officers to lead your chapter during the next biennium.Rather than waiting for someone else to take the responsibility of being an officer, why not decide to become a leader in your chapter and work to move your chapter forward. Remember: Delta Kappa Gamma never gives you a job you are not qualifiedto handle. Nor, does it give you a job that has not been done by others. These mem-

bers are always willing to help you. Chapters are the lifeblood of the Society. I look forward to working with all mem-

bers as we move Alpha Delta State Toward Greater Horizons.

The Membership Committee is one of the most important committees in your chapter.During this biennium check this column for information and ideas about membershipand how to increase chapter membership.

There are three classifications and eligibility to become a member of DKG.Active An active member is a woman, who at the time of her election, is employedas a professional educator or has retired from an educational position. Revised ADS Bylaws Available

The Alpha Delta State Bylaws, revisedand approved at the General SessionApril 13, 2013, are available on the

state website. Each chapter presidentwill receive a copy at the ExecutiveBoard meeting on October 12, 2013.

The Alpha Delta State Leadership Teammet together on August 10 to begin work-ing Toward Greater Horizons , the themeof President Emily Williams biennium. All of the elected officers and committee

chairmen as well as most of the commit-tee members, coordinators, and liaisonscame together to receive an overview of their responsibilities and to begin their

planning. The Worthington ChristianChurch was buzzing with friends meetingone another, new relationships beingformed and tasks being discussed.

As you, the members throughoutOhio, have questions, concerns, or sug-gestions, do not hesitate to contact theofficers and/or appropriate committeechairmen and members. Each is commit-

The Personal Growth and Services Com-mittee is looking for members in Ohiowho are involved in a sustained effort toteach, or who engage in mission work overseas. The Committee would also liketo hear from members who teach in theU.S. somewhere beyond their usual work assignment. There are members who de-sign, organize and execute educationalexperiences abroad. Others are involvedwith mission groups that divide the work and include instructional services. Mem-

bers who engage in these educational ser-vices a few days or weeks a year areasked to contact Jane Meese at

Two immediate goals face the Bylaws/Policies and Procedures Committee. The first is

to obtain updated chapter standing rules from all chapters, evaluate these, and return tochapters with approval or suggestions for revision. Twenty -five chapters have submit-ted standing rules during the past three years. Due to the recently approved bylaws, allchapters will be asked to align their chapter rules to the new bylaws and to submitthese to the committee electronically or through mail. A check sheet supplied by Inter-national will be placed on our committees web page for chapters to use as a guide. Please note the committee graciously appreciates the 25 chapters who submitted their chapter rules earlier.

The committees second goal is to update the 2006 edition of the Manual of Poli-cies and Procedures of Alpha Delta State Ohio. Our suggested procedure is to placethe 2006 document and a worksheet on our committees web page, and to direct AlphaDelta State Committees to review the specific sections that deal with those commit-tees. After reviewing the policies and procedures, committee members will make nec-

essary revisions and provide rationale for these suggested changes. Once that infor-mation is received and analyzed, our committee will seek clarification and make rec-ommendations to the executive board.

    Deadline dates, as well as procedures and directions will be forthcoming. The Bylaws/Policies and Procedures Committee: Edna Hansen, Alpha Zeta;

Shirley Harper, Delta Tau; Diana Kirkpatrick, Alpha Delta; Annie Roegner, Beta Lambda; and Dr. Lois Harkins, Alpha Lambda, Chairman.

    Immediate Goals Set By Committee

Alpha Delta State chapters are effectively following the Delta Kappa Gamma Society purpose to keep members informed. Through chapter newsletters, members are beinginformed of events that are social and educational, of opportunities for personal and

professional growth and of outreach to others. When newsletters are submitted by email to Peggy Ciolek and Ann Todd, please

include the chapter name in the subject line. The Newsletter Assessment Checklist, which is available on the state website under Documents and More, will be used byour committee to evaluate and give feedback to chapters in the spring.

Please be aware of copyright laws when including poetry, pictures and cartoons or anything that is intellectual property even if you acknowledge the source. When indoubt, leave it out!

The state website has had visitors totaling over 7,500 from around the world. Memberscome seeking information. The goal is to have a well -organized website, which is easyto navigate, and rich in material and information.

The new biennium brings many changes. Names and updated material are replac-ing the old. Sometimes this means things are rearranged on the website.

Fresh ideas are constantly being incorporated. A current project involves AlphaDelta State history. Working with some of the first chapters, old photos and other his-toric documents are being collected, scanned and results posted on the ADS website.

A number of chapters are working to build websites. Using Weebly, it is relativelyeasy to build a website for someone who has a little bit of computer experience. If your chapter would like a free website, the state webmaster is quite willing to come to youto get things started. All you have to do is ask...honest!

Communication is vital in any organization. Many avenues can be used to get in-formation from you or to you. One of the quickest and easiest ways is email. Interna-tional Headquarters maintains a database of every member in the organization. Be-cause they regularly send out printed material, the database has your correct postaladdress. What they do not have is your email address. If someone from each and everychapter would send in the list of chapter email addresses to International Headquarters

it would be a huge help. There are no forms to fill out just send the list with associatednames to Linda Davenport . Her staff will enter the information.

One other item of importance: While you are working on your newsletters and/or websites, please be super cautious that you do not use copyrighted material . Onechapter (not in Ohio) had to pay several thousand dollars royalty because they used acopyrighted poem. Yes, they credited the author, but that was not enough. Remember this: If in doubt, leave it out!

Any questions regarding the website or anything of interest regarding websites, please contact [email protected].

ADS Website Continues to Have Impact

When the Finance Committee met in August, the major discussion centered around theconvention and attracting enough members to meet the hotel minimum budget require-ments. Obviously, there are at least two possibilities:

Raise the cost of registration Have more members in attendance

The Committees suggestion to the membership is a little of both. The Finance Com-mittee suggests the registration be raised to $25.00 AND an incentive be provided for more members to attend. The incentive we suggest is that any chapter sending five or more members will have the registration fee reduced to $20.00 each, provided all reg-istrations are included in one envelope.

What do you think? Discussion, motion and voting must take place at the Exec-utive Board Meeting

Other discussion of the Finance Committee that may lead to action at the Execu-

tive Board Meeting is: The need to add a line item in the budget for Personal Growth and Service Com-mittee of $150.00 (currently not included) Directors and Officers Liability Insurance at a cost of $55.00 per year added to

budget The Finance Committee endorses the recommendation of the CommunicationsCommittee to provide an honorarium of $500 for the webmaster this fiscal year Lastly, we recommend an amendment making two typographical changes of thereimbursement in the section "Biennial Seminar" which would be to add "(s)" tothe word coordinator in two places. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundationwill be added to the list of options for the polish point for chapter donations.)

The A. Margaret Boyd Overseas Foundation was formed to promote interna-tional good will and understanding through study, travel, visits in homes, and observa-tions in schools. Recipients are expected to broaden their knowledge and understand-

ing of other cultures while developing professional and educational skills. Alpha Psi Chapter Impacts CommunityAlphi Psi Members from Zanesville, Ohio, once again sponsored a garage sale to raisescholarship money for students in Muskingum County. The two -day event, held at theMuskingum county fairgrounds, generated $1,784.27, just short of four full $500scholarships! In addition, a Lemonade Shake -Ups booth made $141.51 which will beused to start a benevolent fund to aid members in our organization unable to continuetheir membership due to hardship. Our goal was to generate money for scholarshipsand our organization but most importantly we also made an impact in our community.

Leftover items were donated to the Salvation Army which provides food, clothing, and home goods at no cost. Baskets were donated to a nursing home so they could bedistributed to new residents with toiletries and small necessities tucked inside. Dress - up clothing items for men and women were purchased at a lower price by one of our members working at an alternative school to be used for students who do not have thefunds to dress appropriately for job interviews, court hearings, dances, and gradua-tions. Dress clothes were also given to Eastside Community for their DRESS FOR SUCCESS PROGRAM, providing professional attire for job interviews.

To our surprise, three teachers in our community who only came to shop inquiredabout our organization and are interested in joining. The more active members wehave, the more we can give back to our community. As you can see, the work we dofor Delta Kappa Gamma will have a lasting impact on the people of Zanesville and thesurrounding area.
