    October 15

    Hello Everyone.

If May is my very favourite month, than October is a close second. The riotous

colours and freshness of Spring are gradually, over the summer months, replaced by

resplendent colours of a more subtle palette. Leaves, once soft and vibrant green, turn slowly darker and crispier, before the last colourful Hurrah of Autumn. The

smell, sound and colours of October are so invigorating. Who can resist kicking up

autumn leaves, or cracking open a Horse chestnut to reveal that glossy, brown

conker, or collecting pine cones for the winter fires (alas, ours in electric now). And

then there are the fruits and berries of the hedgerow and orchard, all still colourful,

but not quite so 'in your face' . Don't you think the seasons reflect our own lives? May

your Autumn be long and colourful! and not too crispy! Gina

    Does singing make YOU happy?

Many 'experts' tell us that all types of singing have positive psychological effects.

Apparently the act of singing releases endorphins, the brain's "feel good" chemicalsand studies have shown that singing decreases both anxiety and depression. So evenif you only sing in the shower carry on - it's good for you!

Groups of people are also re-discovering the positives of singing together, and choirshave become popular again. It has been said that choral singers tend to be happierthan the rest of us! Maybe that's because there is an added social dimension which isalso beneficial to our wellbeing.

Those of us who attend church services tend to sing a great deal! So hopefully it

follows that we are a 'happy bunch of people.'Every Sunday morning in church finds us singing our hearts out and I can personallytestify that for me Sunday's are generally joyful and happy days!

However there is more to singing in church than making us happy. God wants us tosing. It's not an option it's a command!Colossians 1:16 let the word of Christ dwell in you singing psalms and hymns andspiritual songs to God.

Why is it so important to God? Does he simply desire our praise and adoration? No,

it's more than that. When we sing we dig deep roots into the teachings of God, we buildeach other up, and importantly, when we sing we are strengthened spiritually.

We often think of singing only when we're happy and times are good:Psalm 98.1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things.

But what about when we are not feeling so good? Singing can actually strengthen usand help us to cope and to persevere in the face of hard times and difficultiesPsalm 59.:16 I will sing of your might; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in themorning. For you have been a fortress for me and a refuge in the day of my distress.

Singing is good for us, physically, mentally and spiritually. And to cap it all it makes ushappy! So whether you are joyful or whether you struggle for joy - SING! Get thoseendorphins going!

Even better, join us 'happy bunch of people' on Sundays, so together we can singGod's glory and spiritual songs. And if you like your songs to be a bit more modern, then come along to THE GAP held every second Sunday at 4pm. at Roydon Church.

    With Love.Revd. Jane

    GAYTONNEWS

    GAYTON W.I.

Twenty two members of Gayton WI met at the Jubilee Hall for their Septembermeeting.

Our speaker for the evening was Charlotte Philcox, The Common Gardener. Someof you may know Charlotte from her gardening column in Lets Talk magazine. Hertalk was entitled 'Hedgerow Harvest' and she shared a multitude of information withus. There are sloes, nettles, horseradish, elderberries samphire etc. to eat anddrink and various plants to use for medicating oneself.

Did you know that holly used to be used to sweep chimneys and that bluebells weremade into starch to be used in the weekly wash? It seems that nettles can also beused to make yarn and then woven into cloth. There is no end to what thecountryside can give us, if we know where to look!! Andrea Lorriman gave the voteof thanks.

Our competition which was for a Hedgerow arrangements was won by MargaretMcKay.

To accompany our tea or coffee, we enjoyed some ofour Centenary Celebration cake, which was deliciousand for which we thank our member, Hilda Bond, formaking for us.

Following the minutes and details of forthcoming events, the raffle was drawn, the winners being: MargaretRippon, Margaret McKay and Beryl Clark.

Beryl Clark, Florence Newton, Penny Andrews,Margaret McKay and Maureen Howman all received a

pretty pot plant as their birthday gift this month.

thOur next meeting is Tuesday 6 October '15.

We have been asked to clarify a funeral notice in September's magazine:

6th August should have read 'Gordon Hammond' and not Maurice.

    GAYTON'S VERY OWN CONCERT.

    The Late Summer Singersth

    Sunday 4 October.

    St Nicholas Church, Gayton.3.30 pm

Since 2001 a group of singers

have met to perform a concert to

raise money for the Gayton Group

of Churches. When we started, the

audience was small, but as time

has gone by, more and more

people have come to listen. This

year, the concert is in the autumn

so we have renamed the group

The Late Summer Singers. Wecover a wide range of musical

styles which ensures that there will

be something for everyone in the

    programme.

A number of the singers are

    professional musicians and the

singing is of a very high quality. We

only get together to perform once a year as the choir includes members

from Luxemburg, France, London and other, far flung places. So the

event is a really special occasion.

If you have not come before, why not give it a try this year? It is for a good

cause and admission is free with a voluntary donation at the end

Gina's PageAn irregular page for fun things

The Herring is a lucky fish, From all disease inured.

Should he be ill when caught at sea; Immediately he's cured!

    The late Spike Milligan.

I have been reprimanded for not doing recipes in imperial as well as metric, so I will

    try harder this month!

This is my favourite relish as it is easy to spread and is a gorgeous colour.

    Sweet Tomato and Chilli Relish

    1Kg (2.2lbs) vine tomatoes; 1 tsp sea salt;

    200g (7ozs) jam sugar with pectin;

    1 tbsp finely chopped medium-hot chilli;

    3 garlic cloves peeled and finely chopped;

100mls (3.7 fl ozs) white wine vinegar or cider vinegar.

Pre heat the oven to 200c/180c fan, gas mark6. Have ready a large roasting tin or

dish 25cm(10) X 35cms(14)Skin the tomatoes by plunging them into boiling water for 10mins and then into cold

water. Take out the cores and roughly chop the tomatoes. Combine the chopped

tomatoes with the remaining ingredients in the roasting tin and place in the oven

uncovered for 65 to 75 mins, stirring towards the end, until reduced considerably,

with the tomatoes sitting in a small amount of syrupy juices.

Spoon into hot, sterilised jar and leave to cool. Store in the 'fridge.

    And finally:

Notice in a farmer's field. The farmer allows walkers to cross the field for free, but

    the bull charges.

Notice in an office. After tea break, staff should empty the teapot and stand upside

    down on the draining board.

    www.ggmbenefice.uk

These days everyone says Check out the web site andwhether we are ordering salmon from Sainsburys or fixing aflight to France, that is where we look.

Our group of Churches, all ten of them, have now got adedicated web site that shows all the different things that go on in all our Churcheslocally.

There is a Whos Who and details of all the services, of course, and information ifyou are thinking of a Church wedding or baptism and if you need to plan a funeral.

And all the events too - from coffee mornings to Bingo and Harvest suppers -butthere is also a great deal of detail about our villages & their histories.

What you should really look at is the wonder of our Church buildings. They are allhundreds of years old and still have the most incredible medieval, and sometimesquite modern, touches.

See if you can answer these questions: (Just for fun)

Which Church has an underground tunnel leading to the Rectory?

Which Church features a pair of wrestlers?

Which Church helped educate the first Prime Minister of this country?

Which Church maybe has a connection to the designer, William Morris?

Which Church has one of the great medieval treasures of Norfolk ?

Which Church has a mermaid (or merman)?

Which Church has a font carved in India?

Which Church has a squirrel sitting on a pew?

Which Church has a Green Man ? ( actually 2 Churches do).

Which Church has a chalice that goes back all the way to 1681?

But please do have a quick look at the site. Every time someone logs on, we will goup the google lists ( or Bing or Yahoo etc.) and we all want to be first.

Fingers crossed, the site will be live by the time you receive this magazine, whichwill also be on-line and in full colour.

All Saints' NewsThe big west window has been cleaned, re-leaded, and looksbeautifully glossy, but is obscured by scaffolding in the tower. The west tower doorshave been taken off, but are still in church, propped up forlornly against the vestry.Inside, the church is filthy, with lots of bat activity. There is more to be done on thegutters, while the clock face is also going to be repainted and gilded.

Bible StudyBible Study has started again on Wednesdays at 7 for 7.30. It takesplace at the houses of people in Blackborough End, East Winch, Gayton andGrimston, and there's room for more variety! We are going to consider the times,Biblical and otherwise, when contact with God seemed particularly close. If you'dlike to come along, please get in touch with Nell Steele, 01553 840814.

Make your village better - not worse!1. The amount of dog poo left round TownClose and Gayton Rd seems to be increasing. Why? This is where there are moredog bins than anywhere else! Please respect the enjoyment of others and clear upyour dog's mess.2. A resident noticed recently that, in an hour round about midday,

of the 70 cars going out of the village towards Gayton, nearly half were going at wellover 30mph and seven were going at over 40mph. At this speed accidents can anddo happen. Please keep to the speed limit.

    Congratulations to you all

PENTNEY & WEST BILNEY VILLAGE HALL

The Chairman and the treasurer have moved home and therefore resigned their

positions at the Village Hall as at the end of December. This means the

Management Committee are down to 3 members and need a minimum of 5,

including a new chairman and new treasurer.

The village hall is clearly at a critical moment in its long history. If no one steps

A little of your time could make a big difference...

Age UK Norfolk is a local charity, helping local people. Each year we provide support

to thousands of older people in Norfolk and have been doing so for 68 years.

people and carers on a wide range of

issues that impact upon their lives, such

    as benefits and entitlements, money

matters, housing and care options, social

    opportunities, practical support after

bereavement and much more! These services would not exist without our volunteers and we are currently in urgent

need of new volunteers! We are looking volunteer advisers and advocates and have vacancies that need

    filling throughout Norfolk.

No experience necessary our volunteers are fully trained and supported in their

roles.Could you help?Volunteering for Age UK Norfolk is an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new

people and work within a friendly, professional organisation and have the satisfaction

of knowing that you are making a real difference to people's lives.Since volunteering for Age UK Norfolk, I have gained a tremendous amount. I have

a personal feeling of being able to help, if only in a small way, and giving somethingback to the community of which I feel a part. So to anyone who is considering

becoming a volunteer for Age UK Norfolk, I would say "go for it, you won't regret it!"

guidance for older peopleliving in West Norfolk

QEH MATTERSSince October 2014, a 'Contingency Planning Team' has been working withorganisations and people across West Norfolk to find a way to fix the money andquality challenges faced by the QEH and to find solutions across the widercommunity that ensure health services can be maintained locally into the future, byorganising the resources they have, to best provide the health services that meetchanging needs. Locally West Norfolk services are particularly affected because:-

We have a high proportion of elderly people.

Our population is spread across a wide, rural area with poor transport links.

The QEH is struggling with money.

We have a high proportion of people with chronic conditions such as

    diabetes, lung disease and obesity.

It's difficult to recruit health and social care staff in West Norfolk.

If nothing were to change, patients who could be treated at home would continue to

be admitted to hospital. The CCG is planning some intermediate care beds to

support patient discharge from hospital this winter and ensure community capacity

    for rehabilitation and return home.th

The next Governors' Council meeting will be on 6 October at 4pm in the conferenceroom at QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please phone 01553613142 if you wish to attend. Pat Watts
