Page 2 Sept. 19, 2017 SIERRA VISTA NEWS OF INTEREST

Hi folks,

You probably know by now, but Tina and I are the proud parents of a bouncing baby dog. Well, he is

more like an eleven-month-old, German Shorthaired Pointer puppy, named Dawson. We received him

from a friend of one of our sons, whose family could not keep him.

In all honesty, I had no idea what I was saying “yes” to when Tina and I agreed that it would be nice for

that dog to come and be a part of our simple, quiet, empty-nesting, home. I had never owned a dog like

that before, and even today after

having him around for the last few

months, I am still amazed (and driv-

en crazy) at the amount of attention

and energy is needed to corral and

take care of that dog.

Before Dawson, “ours” was a quiet

house; we rarely had to get up too

early; and our activity and exercise

fit my mid-life, “well, maybe not

today,” lifestyle. After Dawson, we

are up by 5:00, running by 5:15, and

the whole process starts again just

before we head to bed.

It is crazy and frustrating… and

many times I find myself question-

ing as to “why” we have this dog,

but in all reality, Dawson has

brought a needed interruption to our

household. His presence has caused

us to focus on some areas that we

have been neglecting, and Tina and

I actually feel better and are healthi-

er for it.

It makes me wonder as to what oth-

er areas of our lives (possibly our

personal relationships or spiritual

disciplines) might we be neglecting?

Or, not fully neglecting, but spend-

ing less time and energy than we

could to feel more alive and fully

healthy?

It’s something to think about…

In Christ,

Dear Sierra Vista,

The unexpected passing of husband & father

Bob Nowlin left his family numb with grief. Step-

ping in to fill the void with help, support, comfort

and prayers were Ann Dodgen, Stan Whites &

Tamara Strehli. We thank Pastor Stan for officiat-

ing at Bob’s service and providing such an uplift-

ing message to all. We also thank all the Sierra

Vista “Angels” who provided lunch after the ser-

vice for family and out-of-town guests. The food

was delicious, and the lunch gave time for all to

remember Bob and just hug each other. We’re so

fortunate to be a part of the Sierra Vista family.

Advent by Candlelight

This year Sierra Vista will host its 2nd

“Advent by Candlelight for Women”. It will

be an opportunity for women of all ages to set

aside the hustle and bustle of the Christmas

and holiday season and focus their minds and

hearts on the birth of Christ. The date will be

Monday, December 4th at 6 pm. We will

have light appetizers and desserts provided by

table hostesses. Sierra Vista will provide wa-

ter, decaf coffee and or tea. After a time of

fellowship we will go to the Sanctuary for a

worship service. The Worship service will

consist of 4 speakers: Hope given by Jordan

Burch, Peace given by Sue Van Hoozer, Joy

given by Jenny Love and Love given by Jessi-

ca Glass. After each speaker there will be a

song or music that will complement the speak-

ers subject. And, of course, all of this by can-

dlelight! We hope you will plan to join us by

hosting a table, helping set up or just enjoying

the time together. Last year’s event was amaz-

ing! Table space is limited, so please let me

know if you would like to host a table as soon

as you can! If you are interested in helping,

attending or hosting a table please call Tina

Glass at 325-944-4041 or 325-450-1231.

Thank you for your love and support of this

Senior Scholarships

Sierra Vista gave out 4 - $500 dollar scholarships

to graduating seniors this year. This money is not

in our budget, it comes from you! If you are look-

ing for a place to donate some money, we hope

you will consider donating to this fund. You can

make it in honor or memory of a loved one and it

will be a great way to support four deserving sen-

iors from this church. This year’s recipients are

Tucker Young, Bailey Muehlstein, Morgan

Ditmore and Hailey Cassell.

Soda Can Pulls

Remember to continue saving your soda can

pull tops. 24 pounds of pulls will help a

family of 4 spend a night in the Ronald

McDonald House. Thank you for all your support!

2017 Youth Mission Trips

We are in the BLACK! Woohoo! Thank you SO

much for your support of these trips! It is the only

way we can go out into the world and make a dif-

ference.

Grace & Grub

Grace and Grub… “Free lunch” for the youth from

Central High School, TLC and Cornerstone Chris-

tian school starts back on September 28th. We will

need wonderful volunteers, such as yourself, to

cook hamburger meat, bake cakes, buy chips, salad,

cheese, ranch dressing and salsa, or you can donate

money to help with this fantastic ministry. Call Ti-

na with questions and to say YES when she or Will

calls or texts!

Sunday School Teacher Wanted!

We need one more Sunday school teacher to trade

out with the Senior High teacher. If you have ever

thought about hanging out with some great youth…

please consider filling this need. We have the cur-

riculum, you just have to say yes! Contact Tina for

more information.

The Pumpkin Patch Needs YOU!

The Pumpkin Patch is our biggest fund raiser and

we need YOU to help us make it successful. We

need readers, sales people, money takers, decora-

tors, pumpkin inspectors and crowd controllers…

But most importantly we need unloaders! Unload-

ing the pumpkins from the truck is the BIGGEST

and most important job of all! We could not have a

“pumpkin” patch without pumpkins! Last year we

had a big crowd on the first load but really strug-

gled on the second load. It generally only takes a
