TORONTO CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD February 2016
Principal’s Message
Keep Your Hands to Yourself! Something that is often said at
school and likely in many of
your homes as well. All the
students have heard me regularly
speak to the importance of
keeping their hands off one
another. For children who are
able to control their emotions, it
is sometimes overwhelming
when other students do not. As
parents, you may struggle with
this with your own children as
they fight over the toys, your
attention etc. There are things
that can help you, and in turn
help our children deal with their
emotions that can sometimes
lead to a physical reaction.
A child who understands that it is
okay to feel mad but not okay to
hit, can see that they have choices
about how to deal with their
feelings without reacting
impulsively. Children can benefit
from learning feeling words such
as frustrated, disappointed, and
nervous.
A great way to help kids learn
about feelings is to discuss how
various characters in books or TV
shows may feel.
Pause to ask, “How do you think
he feels right now?” Then
discuss the various feelings the
character may be experiencing
and the reasons why.
This also teaches kids empathy.
Young children and pre-
teens/teens can often think the
world revolves around them so it
can be an eye opening experience
for them to learn that

Act of Love
O My God, I love you above all things,
with my whole heart and soul,
because you are all-good and worthy of all
love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of
you. I forgive all who have
injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

other people have feelings too. If
your child knows that pushing
their friend to the ground may
make their friend mad and sad, he
or she may be less likely to do it.
Or if your teen understands that
their coming home late worries
you, then maybe they she will
have more consideration.
Teach kids appropriate ways to
deal with uncomfortable
emotions. Kids need to learn that
just because they feel angry
doesn’t mean they can hit
someone. Instead, they need to
learn the skills to use so they can
resolve conflict peacefully. One
way to deal with feelings is to talk
about it. Encourage kids to use
their words to express how they
feel. This can help them speak up
to a friend who has ripped a toy
out of their hand and can prevent
them from lashing out and
retaliating.
Teach kids how to take a self-time
out. To walk away for five
minutes, to go to another room or
to ask to go for a walk. This will
help them learn to calm down and
perhaps think about some
possible strategies to solve the
problems which leads to my last
point. Problem Solving has been
ranked as one of six of the most
important social skills for
children and adults. Teach your
child to brainstorm several
solutions to a problem. Then,
show them how to consider the
pros and cons of each potential
solution. This will help your child
learn to think before he/she acts.
For younger children, role
playing situations can be
effective and of course, how you
yourself solve problems can be
the most effective of all. Use
examples from your own life. I
appreciate your support because
as much as it is part of my job, no
parents like to receive a phone
explaining that their child has hit
or been hit.

given to children in kindergarten

PLACEMENT STUDENTS
You may recognize a few new
faces around the school the last
few weeks. We have a few
partnerships happening with
Ryerson and Humber College. We
have students who are training to
be Child and Youth Workers and
we also have a student studying to
be a nurse. It is
something that we
have been
welcoming over the
last few years
because both
institutes have a
quality program
with dedicated
students. More
hands helping
around the school
the better and the
students
continually show
respect and warmth toward
these students. I feel that
these partnerships bring so
much value to the school
community.
Dental Screening
