President, Village of Barrington

Village of Barrington Works With Barrington Park District on Land Swap to Improve Flooding At Miller Park

WE’RE HIRING!Village Seeks Seasonal Support StaffThe Village is seeking seasonal support staff

for a variety of snow and ice control activities,

including snow plowing, salting, hand shovel-

ing, and other duties as assigned. Because

this is a seasonal support position, the typical

work week will vary, depending on weather

conditions. Applications are available on the

Village’s website at www.barrington-il.gov or

at Village Hall. For more information, contact

Human Resources at (847) 304-3415.

I’m very pleased to announce that the Village of Barrington is in the process of finalizing a partnership agreement for a land exchange with the Barrington Park District that will assist the Village in reducing flooding in the Miller Park area (Summit and Lincoln Avenue).

Under a joint intergovernmental agreement, the Village of Barrington would transfer ownership of Meinhard Park (at the corner of Bristol Drive and Concord Lane) to the Barrington Park District and, in exchange, Barrington Park District would transfer owner-ship of the open space area of Miller Park to the Village of Barrington (except for the Roy Wilmering Scout Cabin and its immediate surroundings, which would remain owned by the Barrington Park District).

The Village then plans to redevelop Miller Park as a combination of open space and a new storm water retention pond aimed at lowering the risk of neighborhood flooding – a much-needed improvement to this flood-prone area. Meanwhile, the Barrington Park District would improve Meinhard Park with playground and other equipment appropriate for a neighborhood park.

I am particularly excited about this partnership with the Park District because it exempli-fies the benefits of governmental bodies working together to achieve a better outcome for our community.

Because our community is served by a wide variety of completely separate governmental entities, including the Village, the Barrington 220 School District, the Barrington Park Dis-trict, the Barrington Library District, and so on, it is often easy to be confused about which governmental entity has which responsibilities.

The Village of Barrington is a general-purpose local government charged with providing for the public's safety and doing the many things traditionally associated with govern-ment. The Park District is a special-purpose unit of government with a single purpose – to provide the community with parks and recreation. So while the Park District would not establish a fire or police department and the Village would not create a dog park, in the case of the Miller/Meinhard Park swap, each of our respective jobs is made better by our cooperative effort.

Through this land swap, the Village will enhance storm water management, and the Park District will have a great new recreation space for the neighborhood. We both look forward to fulfilling this greater purpose for our community through this important partnership.

101 West Luxury Apartments Are on the Rise at South Hough StreetYou've probably noticed that the steel has been laid and the walls are going vertical at 101 West, the new luxury apartment community at the corner of Liberty and Hough Streets (north of McGrath’s Volvo dealership).

The late delivery of steel might have slowed summer progress some-what, but it’s now full speed ahead. The developers, Monroe Residential Partners, have projected an completion date of April 2018.

This modern, loft-style building will consist of 64 units, with a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom-plus-den options. The community will feature amenities such as a rooftop terrace with fire pit and outdoor grilling stations, underground heated parking, community lounge, and fitness center.

The 101 West showroom and leasing office is now open by appointment in the courtyard just beyond Francesca’s. Pre-leasing opportunities are available, with 10% of the building already reserved. For more infor-mation or to schedule a private tour of the showroom, contact Michael Kurowski at Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty; [email protected].

VILLAGE UPDATES

Looking for Architectural Review Commission Members Are you interested in getting more involved with the Village? We can use your help! The Village of Barrington is seeking citizens who would be interested in serving their community through the Archi-tectural Review Commission.

Those with expertise or interest in landscape architecture, historic preservation, architectural design, zoning or land use issues are encouraged to send a resume to [email protected].

This is a volunteer position serving as a member of the Village Board-appointed Architectural Review Commission (ARC).

At its regular meeting on September 11, the Village of Barrington Board of Trustees unani-mously approved a new townhome subdivi-sion at Grove Avenue and Dundee Road, fol-lowing numerous public hearings and review by the Village of Barrington Plan Commission and Architectural Review Commission.

The development by M/I Homes, called “Brent-wood,“ will include 61 townhomes on 11.33 acres. It features park-like open space with a connection to a new bike path to be developed on Dundee Road from Barrington Road to Prairie Middle School.

The development lies in a mixed-use area of office and residential properties along Grove Avenue. Its 5.38 units-per-acre density is con-sistent with multi-family projects in the Village that have been approved in recent years in

Village Board Approves Brentwood Townhomes at Grove Ave. & Dundee Rd.order to bring more diverse housing options for younger families, young professionals, and empty nesters. These include both the 101 W. Liberty Street apartment complex currently under construction and the Roslyn Meadows townhome development coming next year.

The subdivision’s location is desirable due to its proximity to the middle school, the District 220 Early Learning Center, and Ron Beese Park.

It’s Leaf Season Again Autumn is a time of year when those beautiful leaves begin to fall to the ground and need to be disposed of. In order to be more environmentally friendly, we are asking that you consider mulch-ing or composting your leaves.

Being “green” will help to reduce the energy expended for transpor-tation, processing, and disposal. If you have leaves that cannot be mulched or composted, you may utilize your large green yard waste tote or purchase leaf bags at Jewel/ Osco.

Please do not rake or blow your leaves on to the street, as this can create safety issues and clog storm drains and pipes.

Village Manager

Feeling the Impact of Parking and Traffic Woes in the Village? You’re Not AloneSchool’s back in session, and anyone who commutes to work knows what that means – increased traffic and tighter parking in the Village. When school starts again in the fall, most people are back from sum-mer vacations and back at work, making this one of the most difficult times of the year for commuters.

But this fall, a number of unique events have combined to create even more headache-inducing traffic woes in our area, including new school start times and ongoing Village and IDOT construction projects.

The good news? Historically, we have seen that traffic and parking eases somewhat as fall goes on, when commuters adjust and settle into new patterns.

The bad news? The Village’s Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project will continue to have an impact on parking in the North Commuter Lot through March of next year, as additional spaces are being used to house construction equipment and sewer pipe is installed under the railroad tracks beginning in early 2018.

This work requires a large excavation pit and a crane that will push the pipe under the tracks from the North Commuter Lot. Due to the proximity and impact of construction in the North Commuter Lot, a portion of this lot was required by the contractor as a staging area. Additional closures in this lot began in September, and the closures will remain in place until the completion of work on the north side of the tracks in spring 2018.

To accommodate parkers in this lot, the Village has arranged for 100+ additional temporary parking spots on the south side of the tracks through Harris Bank and along various streets. Permits may be pur-chased at Village Hall.

The Village is working hard to complete these critical infrastructure improvements with the least disruption we can achieve given the project's complexities. However, we do understand the inconve-nience that these closures can cause to our residents and commut-ers. We greatly appreciate your understanding during this time.

Fall Chipper ScheduleMonday, October 2 - North of Main StreetMonday, October 9 - South of Main Street

Get ready for the Chipper! Please have all the material out to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your designated Monday morning. Stack branches neatly in a long, low pile on the parkway, with the cut end facing the curb. Please note that Public Works crews cannot pick up material on private property, and the Chipper will make only ONE pass through your neighborhood.

Branches may be up to 10” in diameter and at least 4’ in length. The following items cannot be picked up: root balls and stumps; building materials; anything with nails, wire or bolts; any materials placed in a box or garbage can; grass; leaves; or any materials other than wooded branch materials. Remember to utilize your Groot yard waste tote throughout the season.

Need to Shred? Bring Your Papers to Our Document Destruction Event

October 28, 2017, 9:00 – 12:00 p.m.On Saturday, October 28, the Village of Barrington will host a Document Destruction Event at the North Commuter Lot from 9:00 a.m. – noon. (Enter at Klingenberg Lane and Northwest Highway.) T

The event is sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), and residents from Barrington and other SWANCC com-munities are eligible to participate. However, materials will not be accepted from non-SWANCC residents, businesses, schools, or institutions, and IDs will be checked for verification of residency: www.swancc.org/swancc-member-communities.

Acceptable documents can include medical forms, bank statements, personal files and retired tax forms. There is a limit of six (6) file boxes or paper bags, and all plastic, metal clips or binders must be removed. DO NOT bring paper in plastic bags. Plastic is a contaminant, as are photos, slides, and any non-paper items. Workers will remove the paper docu-ments while residents stay their vehicles. Paper is cross-shredded on site and will be recycled at a mill to make new paper products.

“Every consumer is at risk of identity theft, and criminals have got-ten very astute at going into garbage cans and recycling bins to steal names, addresses and even bank account numbers,” said Mary Allen, SWANCC’s Recycling and Education Director. “Because of this constant threat, SWANCC wants to assist residents with destroying their personal information, making sure that all shredding is done on site at the host location before being recycled.”

For more information on SWANCC’s Document Destruction Events or other programs and resources, please visit SWANCC’s website at swancc.org or call (847) 724-9205.

Trick-or-Treat! Tuesday, October 31, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Safety Tips for a Happy Halloween

Halloween is a cherished tradition, but the excitement of the night can cause children to forget to be careful. Please review the safety tips below and share them with your child to ensure a safe Halloween.

• Use face paint instead of masks to ensure your children can see well, and provide them with lights or reflective tape to ensure that they can be seen by others.

• Instruct your children to approach only those homes that are well-lit and never to enter a stranger’s home.

• Instruct your children to eat nothing until they come home and the treats have been inspected by you.

• Instruct your children to travel only in familiar areas and along an established route.

• Do not light your pumpkin with a candle; instead use a flashlight or cold chemical light-stick.

• Autumn leaves, dry corn stalks, berry branches, similar fall decorations, and even some Halloween costumes can be hazardous. Keep lighted bulbs, open fires, and even adult smoking materials at a safe distance.

Notify the police department of any unusual occurrences or incidents. Call 911 in an emergency.
