One of New Plymouth’s oldest residents and daughter of a Taranaki pioneering family, Mrs Ethel Mary Honeyfield died recently. She was 99.
Born on Brixton, London, in 1857, Mrs Honeyfield came to New Zealand with her parents Mr & Mrs F.J Morris on the ship “Taranaki” in 1880. They built their home at Tapuae, Oakura.
She married William Honeyfield, a farmer of Tataramaika and grandson of Richard and Rawhinia Barrett in 1897 at St Peters Church, Tataramaika. They were the second couple married there.
With her husband, Mrs Honeyfield had a continuing interest in St Peters. She was organist and a member of the Mother’s Union for many years.
She was a member of the Oakura W.D.F.F in its early years, and a long time member of the Victoria League. She spent the latter part of her life in New Plymouth.

A well known personality in Taranaki farming and land agent circles, Mr James Frederick Honeyfield, died suddenly in New Plymouth last night. He was 54.
The son of Mrs E.M. Honeyfield, St Aubyns Street New Plymouth and the late William Honeyfield, Tataramaika, Mr Honeyfield was born at Tataramaika. After his father’s death, he farmed at Tataramaika for 18 years up to 1950.
He joined Newton King Limited, as a stick agent and three years later went into business as a storekeeper at Okato.
In 1954, he re-joined Newton King Limited and was employed in then land department at the time f his death.
A keen sportsman, Mr Honeyfield was a senior member of the Paritutu Bowling Club and the New Plymouth Golf Club. He was also a member of the Ngamotu Masonic Lodge and the New Plymouth Benedicts Club.
He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters and a son, Mrs T Dixon, New Plymouth, Pauline and Bernard.
