Reflection - prepared by Fr James Lyons

When you were baptised you were buried with Christ. St Paul affirms this in his letter to the Colossians [2:12-14]. It seems a harsh statement but one we dare not overlook.

Burial presupposes death and there is a real “dying” in being baptised. We die to a life without Christ. We die to all the negatives that threaten happiness, that tempt us away from gifting ourselves, that appeal to selfishness: don’t bother about anyone else; don’t feel sorry for anyone; don’t get side-tracked from your own pursuit of riches, success.

Traditionally, the baptismal font is shaped to represent a tomb, and the water into which we plunge, a symbolic drowning. We die, as Jesus did, to whatever is incompatible to his way of life. But, the font also represents a womb, and the waters carry the baptised person into life – into life, and to live, with Jesus.

Appreciating this two-fold imagery is an important step to grasping the full reality of what it means to be baptised a Christian. We die and we come to life in the same celebration, opting for life with Jesus and all that option implies.

Congratulations to: Emersyn, Vaeagi and Mia

Father Michael’s 60th Celebration Last weekend on Sunday 21st July, six of our amazing intermediate students welcomed Father Michael into the Our Lady of the Rosary Church with a special karanga. Victoria, Brooke, Azrah, Rebecca, Kenny and Jessica practised the karanga last term and all felt very honoured to call Father Michael into his 60th year as a Priest. How lucky we all are to have him.

Student Voice

Tumanako: Children’s Art Works for a Peaceful World Tumanako is a special exhibition put together by the Hutt City Council to commemorate Hiroshima Day. Our Intermediate students have been busy thinking critically and creating an artwork that best shows the hope they have for Tumanako in our world today and in the future.Twenty students have been selected (by student vote) to have their art work displayed at Walter Nash Stadium.

Congratulations to Caylen, Victoria, Isabella, Hunter, Mae, Rebecca, Japji, Jessica, Taylor, Vaeagi, Mac, Kelly, Isaiah, Reeney, Emery, Niamh, Jasneet, Elsie, Kayan and Grace. The artwork of these students will be at Walter Nash Stadium for the general public to view.

The opening day for the exhibition viewing is Sunday 4th August at 3pm. We would love to see you all pop in at some stage in between 5th - 31st August to view the amazing artist talent in the Wellington region.

Here are some of the blurbs that the students wrote to accompany their artwork.

Don’t Judge Others by Grace My arts message is that you should have an inclusive culture where the colour of our skin does not matter. I believe we can do better with our judgements of others.

People Can Change by Niamh My art symbolises that while the world may be black and white, we can be the colour! I think we can make the world a bit more colourful just by being kind, or even rescuing a ladybug. Unfortunately a lot of us don’t choose to. We should all try, even if it’s just a flower in the garden.

Light Hope by Mae I would like to see that the world is filled with peace and we are united as one. My artwork shows that we should let the flowers flourish in the toxic waste lands.

World Peace by Mac My artwork shows the peace that we need between all countries and governments and love that all people should show to the world and others around them.

We All Belong by Caylen This piece of art represents us all as a community showing that we all belong in this society. We all need to put the pieces together and save this beautiful place we call home.
