Su Conjunto Histórico Artístico destaca por su belleza y su excelente estadode conservación. Debido a su carácter defensivo, la villa de Vejer se configuracomo un recinto amurallado, cuyo trazado irregular se adapta a losdesniveles del terreno. Sus murallas cuentan con cuatro puertas (el Arco dela Segur, el de Sancho IV, el de la Villa y el de Puerta Cerrada) y tres torres (ladel Mayorazgo, la de San Juan y la de Corredera). Destaca también la IglesiaParroquial del Divino Salvador, construida sobre una antigua mezquita. Sucastillo, fechado entre los siglos X y XI, es de construcción árabe,sobresaliendo su espléndida puerta de acceso con arco de herradura. Fuedeclarado Monumento Nacional en 1931.
The Historic Ar tistic Heritage is one of the most beautiful and bestpreser ved. Due to its defensive nature, Vejer town is a walled enclo-sure with an irregular layout following the uneven lay of the land. Thewalls have four gates (the Segur, Sancho IV, Villa and Puer ta Cerra-da Arches) and three towers (Mayorazgo, San Juan and Corredera).The Divino Salvador Parish Church is also a highlight, being builtover a former mosque. The 10th and 11th centur y Arabic castle hasa splendid access gate with a horseshoe arch and was declared aNational Monument in 1931.
A tres kilómetros de la ciudad se encuentra el singular paraje natural deSanta Lucía. El acueducto, de origen árabe, o los cinco molinos de agua,conocidos ya en el siglo XVI, le confieren un valor patrimonialdestacado. Vejer cuenta con 82 hectáreas de marismas incluidas en elParque Natural de la Breña y Marismas del Barbate. En ellas nosencontramos una rica vegetación de lirios y sauces, entre otras muchasespecies, sirviendo de hábitat a una gran variedad de aves. Por último,la preciosa playa virgen de El Palmar, a 9 kilómetros del centro urbano,de aguas transparentes y fina arena, es ideal para el baño y para lapráctica de deportes náuticos.
The unique natural spot of Santa Lucía is located three kilometres fromthe town. The Arabic aqueduct or the five water mills - already well-known in the 16th century - make for outstanding heritage. Vejer has 82hectares of marshland falling within the Breña and Marismas del Barba-te and Barbate Marshands Nature Park with their rich plant life of irisesand willows, amongst many other species, providing a habitat for a gre-at many birds. Lastly, the spectacular unspoilt El Palmar beach, located9 kilometres from the town centre, enjoys clear waters and fine sands -ideal for bathing and water sports.
Vejer de la Frontera sigue manteniendo una importante tradición artesanalcentrada en la producción de objetos hechos con palma, mimbre o barro.Actualmente, la artesanía vejeriega es muy peculiar. Se realizan de formaartesanal objetos decorativos que van desde tallas en madera, vajillas decerámica, cestas de mimbre, cerones, espuertas, capachos y reores hasta lareproducción de figuras representativas del municipio utilizando materialesproducidos en el entorno. Paseando por el Conjunto Histórico Artístico de lalocalidad, el turista podrá encontrar diversos talleres y tiendas de artesanía enlos que adquirir souvenirs típicos de nuestra ciudad, al tiempo que recrearsecon el buen hacer de nuestros artesanos.
Vejer de la Frontera continues to uphold an important handcraft traditionbased on the manufacture of products made with palm leaf, wicker and clay.At present, Vejer handcrafts are rather unusual with decorative products ran-ging from woodwork, ceramic crockery, wicker baskets, adornments, pan-niers, hampers and covers to reproduction of figures representative of thearea using locally-produced material. In strolling around the area's HistoricArtistic Heritage visitors may come across different workshops and hand-craft shops where typical souvenirs from the town can be purchased, as wellas enjoying our artisans' fine work.
La gastronomía es otro elemento que no pasa desapercibido. A suvariedad y carácter popular se une lo mejor de la tradicional cocinaandalusí. Contamos con una amplia gama de productos del campo y delmar. La excelente calidad de las verduras, del ganado de retinto quepasta en sus tierras, de los pescados de la costa y la exquisitez de lasrecetas tradicionales permiten al viajero disfrutar de una buena mesa:guisos de berza, espárragos y tagarninas, repostería, vinos del país,…Destacan las chacinas y embutidos típicos de la tierra, como pueden serel lomo en manteca, las morcillas o los morcones, elaboradosartesanalmente por los carniceros.

Outside the town centre thereare also a series of spots ofpar ticular tourist and culturalinterest, which can be visitedon organised trips. Going onthe Rut a de los Molinos(Windmill Trai l ) or any trai lthrough the Breña and Maris-mas del Barbate Nature Parkis highly recommended. El Palmar beach is located ni-ne kilometres from the towncentre and is another great Ve-jer attraction. Unspoilt f inesands and cr ystalline watersmake for one of Andalusia'sbest beaches. Without being
overcrowded, El Palmar ishighly valued by the people ofVejer and visitors of fering afull range of nearby ser vices.
Vejer cuisine is also highly ap-preciated by visitors for its va-riety, popular character andthe use of agricultural pro-ducts. The most typical dishesare chestnut stew, hot gazpa-cho and sweets such as theHoly Week pastries. Fish andseafood also play a role in Ve-jer cuisine which also has animpor t ant ar tisan traditionthat is presently, and almostexclusively, aimed at visitors.

Construido sobre unos terrenos ha-bitados desde la Edad de Bronce,Vejer era conocida como la ciudadde Besaro durante la dominación ro-mana, periodo del cual se conservan
algunos restos arqueológicos comola Villa de Libreros y el Horno delChorrillo. Tras la famosa batalla dela Janda, que tuvo lugar en el año711, la ciudad pasó a formar partedel imperio musulmán, conociendoa partir de entonces un espectaculardesarrollo económico y cultural. Deaquella época data el entramado ur-bano de la ciudad y algunos monu-mentos como la Puerta del Castillo.
Considerado uno de los pueblosmás bellos de España, Vejer de laFrontera cuenta con un importantePatrimonio Histórico y Cultural,motivo por el cual fue declaradoConjunto Histórico Artístico en1976 y galardonado con el I Pre-mio Nacional de Embellecimientode Pueblos en 1978. Entre los mo-numentos más emblemáticos des-taca la muralla que rodea parte dela ciudad, construida a lo largo dela Edad Media con un perímetro dedos kilómetros aproximadamente.Pasear por las estrechas y blancascalles y contemplar los patios de-corados con multitud de macetasque forman el Casco Antiguo veje-riego es una de las experienciasmás atractivas que los turistaspueden vivir.
La muralla está flanqueada porcuatro puertas -Arco de la Segur,Arco de Sancho IV, Arco de la Villay Arco de Puerta Cerrada- y tres to-rres -Torre del Mayorazgo, Torre deSan Juan y Torre de la Corredera-,que componen una de las rutas
más interesantes para el turista.Dentro del casco antiguo se levan-tan otros importantes monumen-tos como el Castillo de Vejer, cons-truido entre los siglos X y XI y de-clarado Monumento Nacional en1931; la Iglesia Parroquial del Di-vino Salvador, construida sobreuna antigua mezquita; el Conventode las Monjas Concepcionistas,situado junto a el Arco de las Mon-jas, la calle más emblemática dela ciudad; la Casa Palacio del Mar-qués de Tamarón, en la actualidadsede de la Casa de Cultura; o laCasa del Mayorazgo, edificio ba-rroco del siglo XVIII.
Fuera del centro urbano existen,asimismo, una serie de lugaresde gran interés turístico y culturalque pueden conocerse a travésde rutas organizadas. Entre otras,es muy recomendable realizar laRuta de los Molinos o alguna delas rutas a través del Parque Na-tural de la Breña y Marismas delBarbate. Un total de 82 hectáreasdel municipio de Vejer, en su ma-yoría marismas, forman parte deeste paraje de gran belleza y ri-queza ecológica.
La Playa de El Palmar, a 9 kilóme-tros del centro urbano, es otro delos grandes atractivos de Vejer.De aspecto virgen, arena fina yaguas cristalinas, está considera-da una de las mejores playas deAndalucía. Sin llegar a la masifi-cación, El Palmar es muy aprecia-do entre vejeriegos y turistas, que
pueden disfrutar además de unacompleta gama de servicios enlas inmediaciones.
La gastronomía tradicional esotro de los grandes atractivos deVejer y destaca por su variedad,su carácter popular y el uso deproductos de la tierra. Los platosmás típicos son el potaje de cas-tañas, el gazpacho caliente, y dul-ces como las rosquillas de Sema-na Santa. El pescado y el mariscotambién tienen cabida en la coci-na de Vejer, que cuenta asimismocon una importante tradición ar-tesana, en la actualidad destina-da casi exclusivamente al turismo.
