2011 UTSA VOLLEYBALL ROSTER

HEAD COACH LAURA NEUGEBAUER-GROFFA highly-respected coach and player who is legendary locally, Laura Neugebauer-Groff begins her 10th season at the helm of UTSA’s volleyball program this fall.

A member of the 17th induction class of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in February 2011, she has tutored 31 All-Southland Con-ference players (10 first-team selections) and 19 all-academic honorees, including 2005 Southland Student-Athlete of the Year Meagan Daniel. Under her guidance, UTSA also has advanced to eight consecutive conference tournaments and the program was honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award in Spring 2008.

Neugebauer-Groff is the program’s winningest head coach with 152 wins. In her 18th season, she has compiled a head coaching record of 408-212 (.658).

Last season was a banner year for the Roadrunners as Neugebauer-Groff led the team to 22 wins, the most during her tenure. She earned her 400th career victory in the Southland Tournament opener against McNeese State on Nov. 19 before guiding UTSA to the program’s

second tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Birds posted a 13-3 mark in league play and won the West Division title. Kelsey Jewasko earned her second Southland Libero of the Year award and Kendra Rowland and Kelsey Schwirtlich joined her by collecting first-team All-Southland honors. Meanwhile, Briana Mason and Whitney Walls each garnered honorable mention laurels. A trio of players received more awards after UTSA defeated top-seed Central Arkansas in five sets in the tournament championship game. Rowland was named the event’s Most Valuable Player, while Walls and Schwirtlich made the All-Tournament Team. Neugebauer-Groff took her team to Gregory Gymnasium in Austin, where she faced her alma mater, and the Roadrunners fell to sixth-ranked Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

A former All-American at the University of Texas, Neugebauer-Groff captained the Longhorns to four Southwest Conference Championships from 1982-85. In 1992, she was named to the league’s All-Decade team, and in 2002, the San Antonio Express-News named her one of its most-influential people in women’s sports.

Neugebauer-Groff was a member of the National Sports Festival squad in 1983 and also participated at the 1995 World University Games in Japan. From 1986-87, she played professionally for the West German Volleyball League before joining the Chicago Breeze a year later. Neugebauer-Groff has been an annual participant in the United States Volleyball Association National Tournament since 1987.

Her playing days behind her, Neugebauer-Groff was not done with the game and certainly was not done with winning. After brief stints at Hondo High School (1988-90) and as an assistant coach at Texas A&M (1990-92), she accepted the head coaching position locally at St. Mary’s University. It was there that she put together a sparkling 256-62 (.805) record and three national tournament appearances during her eight-year tenure. Neugebauer-Groff finished her stay with a 35-5 mark, the 2000 Heartland Conference Championship and league Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time.

When she began her tenure at St. Mary’s, Neugebauer-Groff signed on as the Director of the Alamo Volleyball Club. She held that position from 1993-2006 and continues to be an active participant in developing volleyball in South Texas. Her local contributions have not gone unnoticed, as she was one of five recipients of the 2006 Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award (presented annually to USA Volleyball members who make outstanding contributions in the area of regional operations). Neugebauer-Groff also was a part of Jefferson High School’s inaugural Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni Class in May 2007 and a member of the UIL’s All-Century third team in 2009.

“I feel like I’ve come full circle,” Neugebauer-Groff said when she was hired in 2002. “As a former Texas player to be back in the University of Texas system and also in San Antonio is like a dream come true.”

She graduated from Texas in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and received her master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Mary’s in 1996. Neugebauer-Groff and her husband, Dwayne, have two children, Jacob and Madison.

Assist and rally: Redshirt junior Kelsey Schwirtlich has recorded the second-most assists in UTSA’s history under the 25-point rally scor-ing era (2008-present). The Corpus Christi native has handed out 1,797 assists in a little under a year and a half as a setter for the Roadrunners. The program record for assists in the current rally scoring era is 1,915 by Amber Brooks (2008-09).

Limiting opponents: This season, UTSA has held three opponents below a .100 hitting per-centage. In all three matches, the Roadrunners have recorded sweeps (Sept. 4 vs. West Virginia/Sept. 6 vs. Prairie View A&M/Sept. 10 vs. Drake).

Welcome to the block party: Sophomore McK-enzie Adams made huge impact in her first start for the Roadrunners on Sept. 9 against Missouri. Adams recorded 10 total blocks (3 solos/7 as-sists) in UTSA’s five-set loss to the Tigers, which tied her for the third most in the program’s 29-year history.

Double dose: Senior outside hitter Elise Huskey has recorded eight double-doubles to lead the team this season, including a pair at last week-end’s Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational.

UTSA captures No. 500: With a sweep of Drake on Sept. 10, UTSA picked up the program’s 500th win. The Roadrunners had accumulated 495 vic-tories in the previous 28 seasons. UTSA now has completed two milestones under head coach Lau-ra Neugebauer-Groff after previously earning win No. 400 on Oct. 8, 2005 against Louisiana-Monroe.

Jewasko named a Lowe’s candidate: Senior libero Kelsey Jewasko has been named a candi-date for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Jewasko, who is a two-time Southland Confer-ence Libero of the Year, is one of 30 NCAA vol-leyball student-athletes to be nominated for this year’s award. In order to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, class-room, character and competition.

Roadrunners sweep weekly SLC awards on Sept. 5: Senior libero Kelsey Jewasko and ju-nior outside hitter Whitney Walls helped UTSA sweep the weekly conference awards after being named the Southland Conference Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week on Sept. 5. Jew-asko, who picked up her sixth career weekly SLC honor, was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Rice Invitational II and recorded a career-high 36 digs at Houston Baptist (Sept. 1). Walls had a breakout week for the Runners by posting 55 kills (3.67 kps). The Arlington native started the week with a career-high 22 kills at Houston Baptist.

Roster addition: UTSA recently added another player to its 2011 roster as sophomore McKenzie Adams transferred in from Virginia. The Schertz native had an outstanding freshman season for the Cavaliers, ranking second on the team in kills (264) and kills per set (3.03) while adding 172 digs and 67 total blocks after appearing in 25 matches. Adams, a 6-3 outside hitter, finished 2010 by being tabbed the NCAA East Region, At-lantic Coast Conference and Virginia Sports In-formation Directors Freshman of the Year. During her prep career at Steele HS, she was ranked No. 24 on PrepVolleyball.com’s Senior Ace list and earned first-team all-state honors.

Southland SIDs select UTSA as preseason fa-vorite: UTSA was selected to win the Southland Conference crown by the league’s sports informa-tion directors in the preseason poll. The Roadrun-ners were picked to finish in a second-place tie by the conference’s coaches. A year ago, UTSA won the West Division and the Southland Tournament Championship before making the program’s sec-ond appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Trio named preseason All-Southland: Senior libero Kelsey Jewasko and redshirt-junior setter Kelsey Schwirtlich were named preseason first-team All-Southland after a vote by the league coaches. Junior outside hitter Whitney Walls rounded out the Roadrunners’ selections by be-ing tabbed second-team.
