TENNESSEE /// LADY VOLUNTEERS VOLLEYBALL 2011 MATCH NOTES 2011 SEASON SCHEDULE TO NOTE... WE MEET AGAIN The No. 20 Lady Vols will conclude its second four-match Southeastern Conference road trip this weekend, as the squad travels to Auburn, Ala., and Athens Ga., to take on Auburn on Friday and Georgia on Sunday. Friday also marks the start of the second- half of the SEC season, as schools will now play each other for the second time. Tennessee is currently tied for Florida with the best record in the SEC, as both teams have a record of 9-1 against the league. Following this weekend, six of UT’s last eight conference matches will be home at Thompson-Boling Arena. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT The #20 University of Tennessee volleyball team split its two matches last week, as it rebounded to down Mississippi State in straight sets after dropping a five-set thriller on the road to #25 Kentucky. The Lady Vols and Wildcats battled to the end, in what would be an exciting top 25 showdown. After the two teams split four incredibly close frames to open the match, it became a race to 15 in the fifth and final set. Down 12-9 to UK, sophomore Kelsey Robinson scored the next three points, all kills, to even the match at 12. It would not be enough, as Kentucky scored three of the next four, winning the match 15- 13. The tough loss ended UT’s winning streak at 11 and gave the Big Orange its first conference defeat. Robinson led the team offensively, tallying 19 kills and 15 digs to record double-double number 13. Sophomore libero Ellen Mullins had a career day, digging up 31, which was a personal-best and the most digs by any SEC player in a conference match this season. Four days later, the Lady Vols traveled to Starkville, Miss., and swept the Bulldogs. The defense was instrumental in the win, limiting the MSU offense to a mere .025 hitting percentage. Against Mississippi State, freshmen Tiffany Baker and Stephanie Stoll each had five blocks, while Mullins had a team-best 15 digs. Robinson registered fourth straight and 14th overall double-double (13 kills, 12 digs). OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCE This weekends opponents in Auburn and Georgia have identical records heading into Friday, as both teams stand at 9-11 overall. In conference play, Georgia is .500 with a 5-5 record, while Auburn has an SEC mark of 3-7. The Tigers and Bulldogs were the first SEC opponent for the Lady Vols in the 2011 season, as the teams traveled to Knoxville on Sept. 16 and 18. ALAN EDWARDS /// ASSISTANT COACHIn July, former Iona College head coach Alan Ed-

wards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff ,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and as-sistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.”

Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past fi ve seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards men-tored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fi fth highest all-time total in the NCAA.

Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC De-fensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point aver-age.

RACHEL COOPER /// ASSISTANT COACHAfter a standout career at Mississippi State as a

player and coaching the past three seasons as an as-sistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tennees-see staff in May.

Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buc-caneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordi-nated team travel and community service.

“The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff . She has experi-ence in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program.

“Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personal-ity is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.”

A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year let-ter winner and starting outside hitter for the Missis-sippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the fi rst Bull-dog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She fi nished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

A LOOK AT THE 2011

COACHING STAFF

Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since com-ing to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior

to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988.

Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an as-sistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA champion-ships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively.

During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS AUBURNThe Auburn Tigers (9-11, 3-7 SEC) wrapped up

a four-game SEC road trip over the weekend with a pair of 3-1 losses at Arkansas on Friday and at LSU on Sunday. In Friday’s match, Sarah Bullock recorded her fourth straight double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs, and three other players hit double digits in kills, led by Kelly Fidero’s 13. Fidero would once again lead the way in Sunday’s loss at LSU, falling one short of a career-high with 18 kills and a .326 hitting percentage, while Bullock would post yet another double-double – her sixth in SEC play – with 14 kills and 14 digs. Through the fi rst half of SEC play, Fidero leads the Tigers with 219 kills (3.13/set) in all matches and 133 kills (3.80/set) in conference matches, which ranks fi fth in the league. The senior now has 863 career kills; with an average of 13.7 kills/match throughout the remainder of the season, she could become the 13th member of the 1,000-kill club at Auburn. Sophomore Camila Jersonsky ranks second in the SEC with a .357 hitting percentage on the year.

GEORGIAThe Georgia Bulldogs moved to 9-11 on the

year and remained at an even .500 in SEC action at 5-5 after going 1-1 this past week. Georgia opened the weekend at LSU falling 3-1, but the Bulldogs bounced back to take a match at Arkansas, 3-2. It was just the second fi ve-set match of the year for Georgia and the Bulldogs earned the victory behind a career-best 22 kills and six blocks from redshirt sophomore Kathleen Luft, a season-best 15.5 team blocks and by matching a seasonbest with 75 digs. Senior Carla Tietz contributed 19 digs in that win and 28 on the weekend to raise her career total to 1,390, which climbs her to third all-time at UGA. The win over the Razorbacks was the Bulldogs’ fi fth SEC win of the season putting them just one win away from matching last year’s six league victories and conference play is only half way over. Georgia will now face each SEC school once more, which gives the Bulldogs 10 matches remaining in the regular season.

STARTING A NEW ONEComing off a heartbreaking loss at No. 25

Kentucky in a fi ve-set thriller on Oct. 12, the Wildcats ended the Lady Vols 11-match winning streak.

With wins over Alabama and Ole Miss on Oct. 7 and 9, Tennessee was closing in on it’s longest winning streak since 2004, when that team rattled off 14 straight victories.

The loss also ended UT’s streak of 11 straight SEC wins, which dated back to last season. This season, the 8-0 start by the Big Orange in league play tied for the best conference start in UT history.

SHE CAN DIG IT!Sophomore libero Ellen Mullins continues to be

a force in the back row for the Lady Vols. Against UK, she dug a career-high 31 balls, which is the most in an SEC match this season. On the season, she ranks fi fth in the conference with an average of 3.84digs per set.

Mullins bettered her previous career high by 11, as she notched 20 digs against Dayton on Sept. 3. Her 31 digs is the third most digs by an SEC player this year, and just the 4th time this year an SEC player has reached the 30 dig mark and the 10th most by a Lady Vol in program history.

MR. 300With a sweep over Georgia in the Southeastern

Conference opener on Sept. 16, Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 300th career win, all of which have come at UT.

Patrick now has the highest winning percentage of any UT volleybal coach (.668), along with the most victories (308).

THE ORIGINAL ORANGE PANTSWhen UT head football coach Derek Dooley

headed out of the Neyland Stadium tunnel in orange pants for the season-opener against Montana, he created a buzz around Knoxville, and even nationally.

However, what some may not know is that Lady Vol head volleyball coach Rob Patrick had already donned the orange pants a year ago against Kentucky on Sept. 30, 2010. The match was televised on ESPNU .

The Lady Vols swept the Wildcats in that match and Patrick’s orange pants record now stands at 1-1.

AUBURN/GEORGIA TIDBITS-The Lady Vols have dominated the recent series’

with against both Auburn and Georgia. Tennessee’s set records since 2001 are 51-15 vs Auburn and 59-21 vs Georgia.

- Over half the matches played between Auburn and Tennessee since 1994 have been sweeps by one team or the other.

- It’s been 11 years since a Tennessee/Georgia match was decided in 4 sets.

- Tennessee’s last 3 losses to Georgia were all fi ve set matches.

- Since 2009, Tennessee has only lost to an unranked SEC team 3 times, all of which were on the road

The Lady Vols have recorded

eight 3-0 victories this season.

Four have come at home, while

the other four were at the Virginia

Tech Invite and at Arkansas and

Mississippi State.

AN OPPONENTS NIGHTMARESophomore Kelsey Robinson has been

tremendous through 19 matches, producing 10 performances of at least 20 kills so far this season. In nine of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of double-doubles is in the box on the right.)

No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team.

Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had fi ve matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs.

Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader off ensively. She leads the conference and ranks 10th nationally in kills per set (4.61). She also ranks eighth in Division I in points per set (5.36).

NIFTY 50Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s fi rst year in Orange

and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. Her average of 11.63 assists per set is the best in the SEC and also ranks 10th nationally.

She has 10 matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in the Lady Vol sweep over Mississippi State. This season she has also produced four double-doubles, registering 50 or more assists in three of those performances.

RECOGNIZING THE HELPFor the second time in less than a month, Mary

Pollmiller was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 for her eff orts at LSU and Arkansas. Against the Tigers and Razorbacks, Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills, tallying 92 of Tennessee’s 102 assists and added fi ve kills of her own.

She fi rst earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, as she leads the league in assists, averaging 11.72 assists per set.

TAMING THE TIGERS AND GATORSBy topping LSU on Sept. 30 and downing Florida

Sept. 25, it is the fi rst time in school history that Tennessee has beaten both the Gators and Tigers on the road in the same season. The Lady Vols had not won in Baton Rouge since 2000, while the last UT victory in Gainesville came in 2004.

MULLINS’ FIRST HONORAfter setting a career-high in digs and being a

consistent presence in the Lady Vol back row, the Southeastern Conference announced Monday that Tennessee sophomore libero Ellen Mullins has been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

It was the fi rst time the Nashville native has been recognized by the SEC, as she averaged a team-best 5.75 digs per set this weekend on the road against Kentucky and Mississippi State.

Against UK, the Nashville, native set a career-high in digs with 31, which ranks second all time in UT history during the 25-point rally scoring era, and is the most digs by any SEC player in a conference match this season.

NATIONALLY KNOWNKelsey Robinson has been an off ensive force

through 15 matches this season. Her play has caught the attention of both the Southeastern Conference and on the national level. On Oct. 10 she was named the SEC Off ensive Player of the Week, while a day later she grabbed Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week Honors for her eff orts against Alabama and Ole Miss.

Robinson notched double-doubles in both matches versus the Rebels and Crimson Tide and now leads the SEC with 14 double-doubles. Versus the Rebels, Robinson recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, as she blasted 20 kills and had 20 digs. In a three-set sweep of Alabama on Friday, she registered 15 kills, 13 digs and three assists.

She also received the SEC Off ensive POW accolde on Sept. 5 after her performance at the Illinois State Farm Classic. She has also earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic.

Page 7: Tennessee Volleyball Match Notes, Auburn and Georgia

ONE WIN TO GUARANTEE .500By winning nine of its fi rst 10 conference matches

this year, one more win would assure Tennessee of at least a .500 mark in SEC play. Rob Patrick has lead the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record in 12 of his 14 full seasons at Rocky Top.

A MONUMENTAL WINBy downing the No. 6 Gators on Sept. 25,

Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also against Tennessee.

It’s been seven years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on its home court, as the 2004 squad topped Florida in the regular season fi nale, then returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOMEFlorida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat

at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history.

By being unoffi cially ranked No. 26 on Sunday, Tennessee is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the fi rst in 17 years.

Now with 3 victories in Gainesville, no other team has more wins over the Gators at home under Coach Wise than the Lady Vols.

Below is a list to show just how rare it is for the Gators to suff er a defeat in Gainesville.

LADY VOL DUO GETS REWARDEDFor the fi rst time since Oct. 20, 2008, a pair of Lady

Vols in junior DeeDee Harrison and sophomore Carly

Sahagian were bestowed conference honors. On Sept. 26. Carly Sahagian was named the SEC

Off ensive Player of the Week, while Harrison earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Sahagian was terrifi c against South Carolina and Florida, tallying 31 kills, 26 digs, three blocks and two services aces. She recorded double-doubles in both of those matches, and blasted a career-high 19 kills at UF.

Against USC and UF, Harrison was a standout all-around performer. She blocked a total of 12 attacks, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set and set career-highs in blocks assists and total blocks against the Gamecocks. Off ensively, she notched double-digits in kills in both matches.

TO NOTE...

RECORD WATCHThrough just 19 matches this season of the 2011

season, two Tennnessee records during the 25-point rally scoring era, which dates back to 2008, have been broken.

Freshman Mary Pollmiller shattered the total assists record, as the Littleton, Colo., native currently has 872 assists on the year. Current Lady Vol Kelsey

Mahoney previously held the record, as she tallied 842 helpers in 2009.

Outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is not only dominate in registering kills, but the sophomore is a weapon at the service line. On the season, Robinson has 32 service aces, which is a Lady Vol best. Mahoney owned the previous record with 28 in 2009. Last year Robinson recorded 21 aces.

In the digs category, sophomore Ellen Mullins has dug up 288 balls this season, which ranks eighth on the UT list since 2008. Robinson’s 247 digs on the season is good for 10th, as Chloe Goldman holds the record with 568 in 2009.

Junior DeeDee Harrison is the team leader in blocks, as she has 72 putbacks on the year. She is just four shy of cracking the top 10. Two years ago, Leah Hinkey set the record after tallying 134 blocks.

DOMINATING ‘D’The Tennessee defense was terrific Against

Mississippi State last Sunday, as the team held the Bulldogs to a .025 team hitting percentage. In the match, the MSU hit in any set was at .056, which came in the second frame. MSU hitting percentage of .025 is the 12th lowest average the Big Orange has held a team to since 2001.

OFF TO A FAST STARTThe Lady Vols fi nished off the fi rst half of their

SEC double round-robin schedule in fi rst place with a 9-1 mark, which is their best record at the half way point since the conference went to the format in 2006.

The next best start came in 2009, as that team went 8-2 in its fi rst 10 against conference opponents. The team went 7-3 last season and in 2006.

GOOD TO BE HOMEAfter spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics

Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River.

Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 43-7 in home matches, including a perfect 7-0 this season. Record at Thompson-Boling Since 2008

NEW COURTTo the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks

very much the same as always with the checker-board orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new.

The court was assembled for the fi rst time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly el-evated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.

The Lady Vols had 10 of their top 25 highest crowds during the 2010 season, including a season-high 1,431 against Florida on Sept. 19.

Twenty-one of Tennessee’s top 25 highest crowds have come in the four years since Thomp-son-Boling Arena became the team’s primary venue.
