2011 SEASON SCHEDULE

TO NOTE...FINAL REGULAR SEASON ROAD TRIP

Coming off a win at Louisville and a victory over Mississippi State at home this past week, the Lady Vols hit the road one last time during the regular season, as the team travels to Oxford, Miss., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for matches against Ole Miss and Alabama.

Tennessee has been on a roll, winning seven-straight matches, including a victory over 13th-ranked Florida in four sets on Oct. 28. After this weeekend, UT will be at home for its fi nal three Southeastern Conference matches.

Last year, Tennessee won all but two home SEC matches in the friendly confi nes of Thompson-Boling Arena.

IN CASE YOU MISSED ITThe No. 15 University of Tennessee Lady Vol

volleyball team notched a pair of victories this past week over Louisville and Mississippi State to improve to 22-3 overall and 14-1 in conference play.

Against the Cardinals, UT had six players hit .286 or better, as juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie

Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and freshmen Tiff any Baker, Shelayn Kolosky and Mary Pollmiller

accounted for all of UT’s 52 kills. As a team, the Big Orange hit .374 against U of L and tied a season-high of 49 assists in a four set match.

Four days later, the Lady Vols had four players reach double digits in kills and four players have 10 or more digs versus MSU. Robinson and Cikra each tallied 15 kills to lead the way, while Baker blasted 11 kills and Harrison recorded 10. The only other time this season that four players reached double digits in kills came on Sept. 25 at Florida.

Baker and Pollmiller each had double-doubles againts State, as Baker dug up 10, while Pollmiller tallied 45 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Ellen

Mullins and freshman Nikki Brice limited the Bulldog off ense, as they had 15 and 11 digs, respectively.

OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCEFriday’s opponent, Ole Miss, is the only SEC team

this season to take the Lady Vols to a fi fth set at Thompson-Boling Arena. Ole Miss has won four of its last fi ve matches, two of which came on the road.

The Tide have dropped three in a row entering Friday’s match against Kentucky. Alabama has been much better at home this year (7-5), as the squad has four sweeps at Foster Auditorium.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING)Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each

of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, fi nishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009.

Rob Patrick is 158-91 in his career in the SEC. In 13 of his 15 seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee stormed through the league with a 15-1 record, tying for fi rst in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.

Those wishing to attend a match are asked to call the Media Relations Offi ce to be placed on the pass list. Photo credentials will be issued only to accredited photographers or those individuals on special assignment. Because there are specifi cally designated areas for photographers, we ask that anyone shooting a Lady Vol volleyball match at Thompson-Boling Arena check with Todd prior to the start of the contest.

RADIO Thompson-Boling Arena is available for radio broadcasts through UT Telephone Services. In order to access these lines, those interested in broadcasting a particular match need to inform the UT Athletics Media Relations Offi ce in writing at their earliest convenience and no later than three weeks prior to the contest. Radio stations also will need to contact UT Telephone Services at (865) 974-3121 to order a telephone line for use at the contest(s).

STATISTICAL SERVICES Services provided include statistics generated from the StatCrew computer program. Match statistics will be handed to all attending members of the media and sports information personnel after every game. Following the conclusion of the match, fi nal statistics will be faxed/emailed to the visiting sports information director’s fax/email list. Results will also be emailed to the sports information contact of visiting teams at the conclusion of the match in lieu of a sports information representative traveling with his or her team. Arrangements should be made in advance for any additional services.

INTERVIEWS Interviews will be available following the match after a 10-minute cooling-off period. Media wishing to interview the coaches or any players other than on game days are required to set up interviews with 24 hours notice through Todd Mounce in the UT Media Relations Offi ce.

ALAN EDWARDS /// ASSISTANT COACHIn July, former Iona College head coach Alan Ed-

wards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff ,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and as-sistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.”

Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past fi ve seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards men-tored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fi fth highest all-time total in the NCAA.

Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC De-fensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point aver-age.

RACHEL COOPER /// ASSISTANT COACHAfter a standout career at Mississippi State as a

player and coaching the past three seasons as an as-sistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tennees-see staff in May.

Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buc-caneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordi-nated team travel and community service.

“The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff . She has experi-ence in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program.

“Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personal-ity is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.”

A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year let-ter winner and starting outside hitter for the Missis-sippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the fi rst Bull-dog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She fi nished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

COACHING STAFF

Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since com-ing to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior

to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988.

Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an as-sistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA champion-ships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively.

During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

WHO’S BACK?Tennessee is returning three starters and a libero

from last year’s roster: juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and sophomore libero Ellen Mullins.

Robinson was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in her fi rst season with the Lady Vols at outside hitter.

Additional returners include sophomore setter Kylann Scheidt, senior setter Kelsey Mahoney and sophomore outside hitter Carly Sahagian.

WHO’S NEW?For one, most of the coaching staff is new. Patrick

JETER OUT FOR SEASONSenior leader Kayla Jeter will miss the entire 2011

season with a knee injury, associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak reported.

Jeter suff ered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee at team practice Aug. 19. Recovery time is estimated between six and nine months.

Jeter enjoyed her best season as a junior in 2010, earning first-team All-SEC and AVCA All-America honorable mention honors. The Solon, Ohio, native ranked second on the squad with 340 kills (2.98/set) and led UT with 19 solo blocks.

SEC COACHES’ SURVEY SAYSThe Southeastern Conference coaches selected

Tennessee to fi nish second in the Eastern Division, and they picked up two votes to win the SEC regular-season title. Florida got nine votes.

LADY VOLS IN THE RANKINGSComing off wins this past week at Louisville and

at home versus Miss. State, UT moved up one spot to No. 15 in the most recent AVCA coaching poll after receiving 625 points. The squad returned to the top 25 on Sept. 26, as it was ranked 23rd following wins over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida on the road. OLE MISS- 10/1/10 KNOXVILLE: The No. 23 University of Ten-nessee volleyball team made quick work of a confer-ence opponent, sweeping past Ole Miss in straightsets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Big Orange was led by Nikki Fowler, who reg-istered her 45th career double-double with 10 kills on .375 hitting with a team-high 12 digs. Kayla Jeter hit at a .353 clip with a match-high 16 kills, nine digs and two blocks.

CAN’T MISS TELEVISIONTennessee games have aired 8 times on an ESPN

network over the years and the Lady Vols are 5-3 in those matches. Overall, the team has won 12 of their last 15 televised matches.

The Lady Vols are slated to appear on television at least one more time this season, when the team hosts LSU on Nov. 20 in a match that will be broadcasted by CSS.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS OLE MISSOle Miss split a pair of matches on the road last

week, downing South Carolina 3-0 on Friday before falling to the nationally ranked Florida 3-0 on Sunday.

Juniors Allegra Wells and Whitney Craven helped lead the Rebels to the win on the weekend with Wells hitting .533 and putting down nine kills against the Gamecocks to go along with nine kills, 12 digs and a .421 performance from Craven. Senior middle blocker Regina Thomas also came up with solid numbers against the Gamecocks, putting down seven kills and eight blocks in the win. Thomas continues to lead the Southeastern Conference in two statistical categories, with a .378 hitting percentage and 1.12 blocks per set. Ole Miss will return to action this weekend with a pair of matches against top-20 teams with No. 15 Tennessee and No. 18 Kentucky coming to town.

ALABAMAAlabama dropped to 11-16 overall and 4-12 in

Southeastern Conference play, following back-to-back three-set road losses to No. 17 Florida and South Carolina. Alabama averaged 10.83 kills per set, while hitting .124 in the two matches. Kayla Fitterer fi nished the weekend with 21 kills and 17 digs to average 3.50 kills and 2.83 digs per set. Fitterer notched her 13th double-double of the season, 25th of her career, when she had 12 kills and 11 digs against South Carolina. Fitterer leads the team with 355 kills (4.08 kps), to rank third in the SEC and 28th in the country. Her 395.5 points and 4.55 points per set are also third in the conference.

Andrea McQuaid had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs against South Carolina on Sunday, bringing her team-leading total to 15 for the season. McQuaid ranks second in the SEC in double-doubles. She was second on the team with 19 kills in the two matches, averaging 3.17 kills per set with a .192 hitting percentage. She also had a team-best 3.50 digs per set for the weekend. Stephanie Riley played all six rotations on the weekend and totaled 56 of the Tide’s 60 assists. Riley averaged 9.33 assists per set, with 26 assists against Florida and a season-high 30 assists against South Carolina.

NOW WE’RE ROLLINGComing off a heartbreaking loss at No. 25

Kentucky in a fi ve-set thriller on Oct. 12, the Wildcats ended the Lady Vols 11-match winning streak.

However, since that match, the Lady Vols have won seven-straight matches, and are in sole possesion of fi rst place in the SEC standings.

The UK loss ended UT’s streak of 11 straight SEC wins, which dated back to last season. This season, the 8-0 start by the Big Orange in league play tied for the best conference start in UT history.

SHE CAN DIG IT!Sophomore libero Ellen Mullins continues to be

a force in the back row for the Lady Vols. Against UK, she dug a career-high 31 balls, which is the second- most in an SEC match this season. On the season, she ranks fi fth in the conference with an average of 3.86 digs per set.

Mullins bettered her previous career high by 11, as she notched 20 digs against Dayton. Her 31 digs is the fi fth most digs by an SEC player this year, and just the 4th SEC player to reach the 30 dig mark and the 10th most by a Lady Vol in program history.

MR. 300With a sweep over Georgia in the Southeastern

Conference opener on Sept. 16, Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 300th career win, all of which have come at UT.

Patrick now has the highest winning percentage of any UT volleybal coach (.672), along with the most victories (314).

THE ORIGINAL ORANGE PANTSWhen UT head football coach Derek Dooley

headed out of the Neyland Stadium tunnel in orange pants for the season-opener against Montana, he created a buzz around Knoxville, and even nationally.

However, what some may not know is that Lady Vol head volleyball coach Rob Patrick had already donned the orange pants a year ago against Kentucky on Sept. 30, 2010. The match was televised on ESPNU .

The Lady Vols swept the Wildcats in that match and Patrick’s orange pants record now stands at 2-1.

WE DON’T MESS AROUNDBy notching their 20th win in just the 23rd match

of the year versus South Carolina on Sunday, the Lady Vols have made it to the 20 win milestone in the third fastest amount of time in Tennessee history. The 1973 team won their fi rst 20 in a row, while the 2004 squad reached 20 wins in 22 matches.

HOME SWEET HOMEThe Lady Vols have had a lot of success this season,

no matter what town or venue they are playing in.However, the Lady Vols have protected their home

court, as the team is a perfect 10-0 in matches played in Thompson-Boling Arena this year. Since the start of SEC play, UT has only dropped four sets in the friendly confi nes of TBA.

AN OPPONENTS NIGHTMARESophomore Kelsey Robinson has been

tremendous through 25 matches, producing 10 performances of at least 20 kills so far this season. In nine of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of double-doubles is in the box on the right.)

No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team.

Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had fi ve matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs.

Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader off ensively. She leads the conference and ranks 19th nationally in kills per set (4.43). She also ranks 15th in Division I in points per set (5.11).

NIFTY 50Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s fi rst year in Orange

and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. Her average of 11.73 assists per set is the second-best in the SEC and also ranks ninth nationally.

She has 11 matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in a 3-1 Lady Vol victory over Georgia. This season she has also produced fi ve double-doubles, registering 50 or more assists in three of those performances.

TAMING THE TIGERS AND GATORSBy topping LSU on Sept. 30 and downing Florida

Sept. 25, it is the fi rst time in school history that Tennessee has beaten both the Gators and Tigers on the road in the same season. The Lady Vols had not won in Baton Rouge since 2000, while the last UT victory in Gainesville came in 2004.

LADY VOL DUOS GET REWARDEDWhen a pair of Lady Vols in junior DeeDee

Harrison and sophomore Carly Sahagian were bestowed conference honors on Sept. 26, it marked the fi rst time since Oct. 20, 2008, that multiple Lady Vols were recognized by the SEC in the same week.

That feat was accomplished again on Oct. 31, as as freshman Tiff any Baker was tabbed the conference’s Off ensive Player of the Week., while classmate Mary

Pollmiller earned Freshman of the Week honors.In Sept, Sahagian was named the SEC Off ensive

Player of the Week, while Harrison earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Sahagian recording double-doubles in both matches versus Florida and South Carolina, including blasting a career-high 19 kills at UF.

Harrison was a standout all-around performer, blocking a total of 12 attacks, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set. She als set career-highs in blocks assists and total blocks at USC. Off ensively, she also notched double-digits in kills in both matches

Baker became the sixth diff erent Lady Vol this season to earn an SEC accolade. By having six diff erent student-athletes be recognized, it is the most in UT history and ties for the most in SEC history (UF also had six players earn honors in 2007).

Baker had double-doubles in each match and increased her season averages in almost every statistical category. Pollmiller had 41 assists in a sweep of South Carolina, aiding UT to a season-high .446 hitting percentage versus the Gamecocks.

NATIONALLY KNOWNKelsey Robinson has been an off ensive force this

season, as her play has caught the attention of both the SEC and on the national level.

On Oct. 10 she was named the SEC Off ensive Player of the Week, while a day later she grabbed Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week Honors for her eff orts against Alabama and Ole Miss.

Robinson notched double-doubles in both matches versus the Rebels and Crimson Tide and leads the SEC with 17 double-doubles. Versus the Rebels, Robinson recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, as she blasted 20 kills and had 20 digs. In a three-set sweep of Alabama, she registered 15 kills, 13 digs and three assists.

She also received the SEC Off ensive POW accolde on Sept. 5 after her performance at the Illinois State Farm Classic. She has also earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic.

TWO IS BETTER THAN ONEWith Harrison and Sahagian earning conference

honors in the same week, and Baker and Pollmiller repeating that accomplishment, Tennessee is the only team this season to have multiple players earn SEC accolades in the same week. The last time the feat happened came in the fi nal week of 2010, as Alabama’s Mary Catherine Aune and Brianne Vande Griend grabbed Freshman and Defensive POW honors.

24 NO MORE!The number 24 may be just a number to some,

but for the Tennesseee Lady Vol volleyball team, it is a signifi cant number in both matches versus Florida this season.

Most recently, in a 3-1 win over UF at home, the Big Orange snapped Florida’s streak of winning 24 consecutive sets. The Gators had not dropped a set prior to UT traveling to Gainesville earlier this season and beating UF in fi ve.

By downing the No. 6 Gators on Sept. 25, Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also against Tennessee.

It’s been seven years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on its home court, as the 2004 squad topped Florida in the regular season fi nale, then returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOMEFlorida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat

at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history.

By being unoffi cially ranked No. 26 on Sept. 25, UT is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the fi rst in 17 years.

Now with three victories in Gainesville, no other team has more wins over the Gators at home under Coach Wise than the Lady Vols.

RECOGNIZING THE HELPFor her second time in the span of less than a

month, Mary Pollmiller was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 for her efforts at LSU and Arkansas. Against the Tigers and Razorbacks, Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills, tallying 92 of Tennessee’s 102 assists and added fi ve kills of her own.

She fi rst earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, as she ranks second in the league, averaging 11.73 assists per set.

DOMINATING ‘D’ The Tennessee defense has been terrifi c as of late, highlighted by the match at home versus Florida and the road contest versus Mississippi State. Against the Gators, the Big Orange defense limited to UF to a mere .160 hitting percentage, as it marked the fi rst time on the season UF was outhit (.175-.160). At the time, Florida was leading the conference and the nation with a clip of .314. At State on Oct. 16, the team held the Bulldogs to a .025 team hitting percentage. In the match, the highest MSU hit in any set was at .056, which came in the second frame. MSU’s hitting percentage of .025 is the 12th lowest average the Big Orange has held a team to since 2001.

RECORD WATCHThrough 25 matches this season, two Tennnessee

records during the 25-point rally scoring era have been broken, which dates back to 2008.

Freshman Mary Pollmiller shattered the total assists record, as the Littleton, Colo., native currently has 1,138 assists on the year. Current Lady Vol Kelsey

Mahoney previously held the record, as she tallied 842 helpers in 2009.

Outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is just 29 kills short of breaking the kills record held by Nikki Fowler, as she has 430 this year. Her 37 service aces this season is also Lady Vol record.

In digs, sophomore Ellen Mullins has dug up 374 balls this season, which ranks fouth. Junior DeeDee

Harrison is the team leader in blocks, as she has 101 putbacks in 2011, which ranks sixth.

MULLINS’ FIRST HONORAfter setting a career-high in digs and being a

consistent presence in the Lady Vol back row, the Southeastern Conference announced that Tennessee sophomore libero Ellen Mullins has been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24.

It was the fi rst time the Nashville native has been recognized by the SEC, as she averaged a team-best 5.75 digs per set this weekend on the road against Kentucky and Mississippi State.

Against UK, the Nashville, native set a career-high in digs with 31, which ranks second all time in UT history during the 25-point rally scoring era, and is the most digs by any SEC player in a conference match this season.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOMThe Lady Vols volleyball squad was one of just

four teams at Tennessee to earn a perfect 100% on the latest graduation success rate report that was released on Oct. 25.

BAKER SHINES BRIGHTAfter grabbing Southeastern Conference

Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31, freshman Tiffany Baker picked up a national accolade a day later, as CVU.com (College Volleyball Update) named her it’s National Player of the Week.

Baker lead the Lady Vols to a pair of victories against Florida and South Carolina, tallying double-doubles in each match. She averaged 4.00 kills per set, hit at a clip of .429, dug up 3.29 balls per set and had a total of six total blocks.

Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River.

NEW COURTTo the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks

very much the same as always with the checker-board orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new.

The court was assembled for the fi rst time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly el-evated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.
