This month’s Newsletter will educate our customers about - Why ELCB SWITCHES AT OUR PROJECTS and Recent updates on Home Loans

Now let we know what is what ELCB SWITCHES is: An Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) is a safety device used in electrical installations with high earth impedance to prevent shock. It detects small stray volt-ages on the metal enclosures of electrical equipment, and interrupts the circuit if a dangerous voltage is detected. Once widely used, more recent installations instead use residual current circuit breakers which instead detect leakage current directly.

Current- Sensing protection

Residual-current devices (RCD) is protect against earth leakage using a different method of detection. Both circuit conductors (supply and return) are run through a sensing coil; any imbalance of the currents means the magnetic field does not perfectly cancel. The device detects the imbalance and trips the contact.

When the term ELCB is used it usually means a voltage-operated device. Similar devices that are current oper-ated are called residual-current devices. However, some companies use the term ELCB to distinguish high sensitivity current operated 3 phase devices that trip in the milliamp range from traditional 3 phase ground fault devices that operate at much higher currents (traditional earth fault devices are insensitive due to the error inherently associated with the summation of currents from multiple current transformers).

Operation

An ELCB is a specialized type of latching relay that has a building's incoming mains power connected through its switching contacts so that the ELCB disconnects the power in an earth leakage (unsafe) condition.

The ELCB detects fault currents from live to the earth (ground) wire within the installation it protects. If suffi-cient voltage appears across the ELCB's sense coil, it will switch off the power, and remain off until manually reset. A voltage-sensing ELCB does not sense fault currents from live to any other earthed body.

How ELCB WORKS WHEN Earth faults occur :

Advantages

ELCBs have one advantage over RCDs: they are less sensitive to fault conditions, and therefore have fewer nuisance trips. (This does not mean they always do, as practical performance depends on installation details and the discrimination enhancing filtering in the ELCB.) Therefore by electrically separating cable armour from the cable circuit protective conductor, an ELCB can be arranged to protect against cable damage only, and not trip on faults in down line installations.

Disadvantages

ELCBs have some disadvantages:

• They do not detect faults that don't pass current through the CPC to the earth rod. • They do not allow a single building system to be easily split into multiple sections with independent fault protection, because earthing systems are usually bonded to pipe work. • They may be tripped by external voltages from something connected to the earthing system such as metal pipes, a TN-S earth or a TN-C-S combined neutral and earth. • As with RCDs, electrically leaky appliances such as some water heaters, washing machines and cookers may cause the ELCB to trip. • ELCBs introduce additional resistance and an additional point of failure into the earthing system.

How an MCB works

A fuse you can reset

A mechanical (or "miniature") circuit breaker is like a resettable fuse. It protects a circuit from currents that are too high.

Circuit breaker, electric device that, like a fuse, interrupts an electric current in a circuit when the current becomes too high. The advantage of a circuit breaker is that it can be reset after it has been tripped; a fuse must be replaced after it has been used once. When a current supplies enough energy to operate a trigger device in a breaker, pair of contacts conducting the current is separated by preloaded springs or some similar mechanism. Generally, a circuit breaker registers the current either by the current's heating effect or by the magnetism it creates in passing through a small coil. Because it is usual for an electric arc to form between the contacts when a breaker opens, some means must be provided for preventing rapid erosion of the contacts. Normally this is done by opening the contacts fast enough to make the arc of short duration. A protective device that opens a circuit upon sensing a current overload. Unlike a fuse, it can be reset. a device that under abnormal conditions, such as a short circuit, interrupts the flow of current in an electrical circuit An electro-magnetic device that opens a circuit automatically when the current exceeds a predetermined value.

These have innovative design providing a superior service life and highly effective quick electric breaking mechanism. The salient attributes which make this stand out are follows
